There is a saying in French—“Si vieillesse pouvait, si jeunesse savait〞—which means roughly “if age had the ability, if youth had the knowledge〞.I was reminded of this saying the other day when I saw an interview with a distinguished Asian neurosurgeon (神经外科医生), now retired, about the impact of computer technology on modern surgery.
He was referring to the difficulty people of his age had in using the new techniques, but also to the fact that younger surgeons, who are more comfortable with the technology, lack some of the wisdom of experience.
It struck me that this problem is not just confined (局限于) to specialized fields such as medicine, but is widespread in modern life. There are many areas where the rapid growth of technology has widened the generation gap.
Young people are at ease with modern technology and propose all sorts of ways for using and developing it.But they often lack the experience needed to see further into the future to the possible dangers that a particular development may cause. Older people see all sorts of difficulties and dangers, but are sometimes ignored,
or even accused of being against progress, if they point out potential problems.Equally, they may see potential uses, but not have the technical skills to put them into practice themselves or the trust in the younger generation to do so.
Enthusiasm and inexperience come into conflict with caution and arrogance, usually with unsatisfactory results for both sides.
What is needed is the development of a partnership, based on mutual respect, which can deliver real progress by combining enthusiasm and caution in a constructive way, rather than in conflict with each other. The old need to give the younger generation the time, the resources and, above all, the authority to develop new ideas and use their skills. In exchange, the young need to turn more actively to the older generation to seek their advice and exploit their greater experience of the world in foreseeing and overcoming potential problems.
【语篇解读】本文以新老两代外科医生在一些方面的差异为例,阐述了这样一个观点:由于科技的飞速开展,许多领域中年纪大的人都不擅长学习新技术,而年轻人又缺乏一些经验。

Birds that are halfas leep—with one brain hemisphere(半球) alert and the other sleeping—control which side of the brain remains awake, according to a new study of sleeping ducks.
Earlier studies have documented halfbrain sleep in a wide range of birds. The brain hemispheres take turns sinking into the sleep stage characterized by slow brain waves. The eye controlled by the sleeping hemisphere keeps shut, while the wakeful hemisphere's eye stays open and alert.Birds also can sleep with both hemispheres resting at once.
Decades of studies of bird groups led researchers to predict extra alertness in the endoftherow sleepers which tend to be attacked more easily.Sure enough, the end birds tended to watch carefully on the side away from their companions.Ducks in the inner spots showed no preference for gaze direction.
Also, birds napping at the end of the line depend on singlehemisphere sleep, rather than total relaxation, more often than inner ducks did. Turning 16 birds through the positions in a fourduck row, the researchers found that compared with 12 percent for birds in internal spots, outer birds halfasleep during some 32 percent of napping time.
“We believe this is the first evidence for an animal behaviorally controlling sleep and wakefulness at the same time in different regions of the brain.〞 the researchers say.
The results provide the best evidence for a longstanding assumption that
singlehemisphere sleep evolved as creatures scanned for enemies. The preference for opening an eye on the lookout side could be widespread, he predicts. He's seen it in a pair of birds napping sidebyside in the zoo and in a single pet bird sleeping by a mirror. The mirrorside eye closed as if the reflection were a companion and the other eye stayed open.
Useful as halfsleeping might be, it's only been found in birds and such water animals as dolphins, whales, and seals.Perhaps keeping one side of the brain awake allows a sleeping animal to surface occasionally to avoid drowning.
Studies of birds may offer unique insights into sleep.Jerome M.Siegel of the UCLA says he wonders if birds' halfbrain sleep is “just_the_tip_of_the_iceberg〞.He supposes that more examples may turn up when we take a closer look at other species. 【语篇解读】本文是一篇科普文。

科学家推测这种睡眠还有可能存在于其他物种。
62.According to the passage, birds often half sleep because ________. A.they have to watch out for possible attacks
B.their brain hemispheres take turns to rest
C.the two halves of their brain are differently structured
D.they have to constantly keep an eye on their companions
答案 A [细节理解题。
根据第三段第一句“Decades of studies of bird groups led researchers to predict extra alertness in the endoftherow sleepers which tend to be attacked more easily.〞可知,鸟类半睡半醒是为了防止受到意外攻击。
故答案选A。

63.While sleeping, some water animals tend to keep half awake in order to ________. A.alert themselves to the approaching enemy
B.emerge from water now and then to breathe
C.be sensitive to the everchanging environment
D.avoid being swept away by rapid currents
答案 B [细节理解题。
根据第七段第二句“Perhaps keeping one side of the brain awake allows a sleeping animal to surface occasionally to avoid drowning.〞可知,保持一侧大脑清醒是为了防止在偶尔露出水面时溺水,即需要保证时刻呼吸。
故答案选B。

When I was 13,my bedroom walls were covered with posters of the Monkees and Beatles.I wrote fan letters and daydreamed about meeting the objects of my affections.I begged my parents to attend every rock concert and watch every TV show featuring my favorite celebrities;my friends and I discussed for hours all the things we would say and do when we met our favorite movie stars and pop singers.I drove my mother crazy! But after a few years,my obsession with stars faded as I matured and gained the confidence to socialize with“real〞 boys.
In the 35 years since I was a teenager, celebrity worship(崇拜)has increased among teens due to the explosion of television celebrity gossip shows, and instant access to celebrity news on the Internet. It's no wonder that many teens are obsessed with stars when news programs are often filled with entertainment stories and the lives of celebrities.
Celebrity worship syndrome(综合征)is now considered a personality disorder. While it is normal for teenagers to follow the lives of their favorite stars, parents should try to monitor everything their child finds interesting.Parents should take action if they suspect a teen is too obsessed with celebrities and showing little interest in school or withdrawing from the family. When teens talk a lot about celebrities and view them as just means of entertainment, this is considered normal celebrity worship. However, when a teenager。
