No one can believe that the over 6,000kilometer Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but 80 percent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize the length is made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site.
The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. It began in the rule of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC—206 BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But
those_sections_far_away_from_the_public_eyes have been almost forgotten.
Few local people know the 3meterhigh walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human. The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with people's names are put away as remembrances. Rubbish is spread over the battlements. The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out entire base.
It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should
know more about the nation's great civilization and learn to love it.

Petra may be the treasure of the world, hidden among mountains. Its most beautiful scenery makes it the greatest ancient site stillstanding nowadays. The rockcarved (雕刻的) rosered town of Petra is filled with mysterious_charm;_it had been “designed to strike wonder into all who entere d it”.
Petra is the most wellknown and beautiful site in Jordan that is about 262 km south of Amman, and 133 km north of Aqaba. The Dead Sea is 80 km north of it. It was the legacy from the Nabataeans, who settled in the southwest of Jordan a lot more than 2,000 years back. Because of its excellent culture, buildings and many water channels, Petra has
become a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World that attracts visitors all over the world.
To get there, you must pass through a kilometer long, cool, dark and narrow gorge (峡谷) whose two high sides keep the sunlight out. Suddenly the gorge opens right into a natural square covered with Petra's most wellknown monuments (遗址), which glow in the bright sun. The old town shows the visitors its beautiful look. It leads people to think about the creativity of the Nabataeans who made Petra as their capital.
Petra flourished for more than 400 years at about the time of Rome until it had been occupied by the Roman legions in 106 AD. Petra has 800 monuments, including buildings, tombs, baths, halls, temples and streets, which were mostly carved in the pretty sandstone.

After the examination, the doctor told my parents my sight would get worse and that I would lose my sight finally. On the way home from hospital, no one said a word. One day, would I only imagine the scenery beyond the glass rather than see it?
That September, I entered middle school. Most nights I had homework that included an armful of books to read. To keep up with other children, I took great trouble to finish the task. With my nose a couple of inches from the page, I was tired easily. What's worse, after I had read several pages on my own, the words slipped off the page into inky pools.
However, then I did not have audio books and electronic devices like kids do now. Instead, Mom volunteered to read out loud. Mom worked parttime, cleaned the house, cooked and spent time with Grandma. In spite of being so busy, she showed up in my room like clockwork. She put on her reading glasses. Mom always thought those glasses made her look old. To me, she looked like a teacher.
In my room, Mom's voice competed with the ticking of the clock. Being forced to focus on listening, I found a way to keep my marks up and compete with the other kids. When the teacher asked a question, I raised my hand with confidence. Teachers praised me for having a good memory. Reading removed my fear for my failing sight, reading also made me curious about other people's challenges and how they managed. Though I could not use my eyes to fix on each passage, my mind lit up with every new book.
True to what the doctor said, the worst came, but thanks to Mom, my sense of hearing now allows me to “see”. T his was the most precious (珍贵的) gift from a mother to her child.

Dear editor ,
A few days ago I visited Daxu Old Town. _________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours , Li Hua 范文
Dear_editor ,
A_few_days_ago_I_visited_Daxu_Old_Town. I become very worried about the cultural relics there after I saw some of them badly damaged. Some people throw waste paper and empty bottles everywhere, and others
draw pictures or write their names on the old walls.
Thousands of tourists visit Daxu Old Town every day. If the visitors
don't pay attention to their behavior, the cultural relics will be
destroyed. So I suggest everyone should raise awareness about protecting
our cultural relics. First of all, we can make a website about it. Then
the government should put some dustbins around the streets.
Let's try our best to keep this Old Town beautiful and welcome our
honorable guests from all over the world.
Yours,
Li_Hua。
