Earth’s forests are emptying. Half of their inhabitants (栖息动物) have disappeared in the last 40 years, according to a new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The 6th mass extinction (大灭绝)
A growing body of evidence suggests that the Earth is in the middle of a mass extinction event-the sixth of its kind in the planet’s history. More than 27% of species on the planet are dying out.
The reasons behind
Worldwide, humans have cleared 30% of all forest cover. According to the research, 60% of the threats ( 威胁) of forest animals result from the disappearance of forests. Hunting, too, is a major reason for the falling number of animal populations. More than half of the species that are in danger due to over-hunting, according to the report, are African primates (灵长目动物), since they’re hunted in the bushmeat trade. Climate change becomes another big danger to forest animals. Many forest species are struggling to adapt to rising temperatures and more extreme weather.
The recovery
“In order to change the decrease of forest biodiversity ( 生物多样性), it’s urgent to handle the multiple pressures on forest species,” the reporter wrote. But with the right strategies, he said, “the recovery of forest species’ populations is possible.”
21.Why is the Earth in the middle of a mass extinction event
now?
A.Because 30% of all forest cover has been cleared by
human.
B.Because half of its populations have disappeared in the last 40 years.
C.Because many species on the Earth are in the danger of dying out.
D.Because extreme weather is killing more and more of its inhabitants.
22.What consequences may the disappearance of forests bring according to the passage?
A.The soil of the earth is in the 6th mass extinction.
B.The inhabitants are decreasing both in number and species.
C.African primates are at the risk of extinction.
D.More forest animals are cruelly hunted in the bushmeat trade.
23.How can the future of the forest species be pictured according to the reporter?
A.Where there is smoke, there is fire.
B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.Where there is life, there is a ray of sunshine.
D.Where there is a solution, there is a silver lining.
B
Every September, as summer ends and the first day of school approaches, I spend a lot of time thinking about darkness.
Perhaps other teachers would say the same, jokingly. But I teach a high school course on trauma (创伤) literature, and my students belong to a generation described as the most spoiled ( 宠坏的), stressed and easily hurt in history. So the question of darkness is often on my mind.
In 2016, Collins Dictionary included “snowflake generation” among its Words of the Year, describing young adults of the 2010s as a group “less resilient (适应的) and more likely to feel upset than previous g enerations.”
But after twelve years of teaching this course, which covers some of the most emotionally difficult texts in contemporary literature -narratives ( 讲述) of war, slavery and so on -I’m pretty sure the comment on my young students is wrong. In particular, I don’t buy the narrative that this generation lacks the resilience necessary for difficult literature. For years, I’ve watched my students circle tirelessly around some difficult questions that puzzle us. Instead of hiding from that world, they try to change it in a way that will allow them to control it successfully.
This is why every September, I ask my students to read the most difficult books I can find.
I don’t do this to hurt t hem. Literature is practice. And I want my students, through these difficult books, to practice living. I want them to practice recognizing historical gaps and to bridge them.
“But this too is true: stories can save us,” writes Tim O’Brien in The Things Th ey Carried.
I believe and stick to that idea, year after year, on the first day of school. Not because these stories will save my students. But because I’m hoping my students will grow up and save the rest of us.
24.What are the young adults of the 2010s like according to the Collins
Dictionary?
A. Unsocial and anxious.
B. Stressed but strong-
willed.
C. Sensitive and greedy.
D. Enthusiastic but self-centered.
25.What does the underlined word “buy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Pay.
B. Believe.
C. Obtain.
D. Suspect.
26.Why does the author disagree with what the young adults are called?
A.The author has no knowledge of the young adults.
B.What the author wants is to help the young adults hide.
C.The author doesn’t know the meaning of “snowflake generation”.
D.The author knows a lot about the young adults from teaching them.
27.What is the purpose of this text?
A. To comment on the new generation again.
B. To recommend some trauma literature.
C. To introduce some teaching experiences.
D. To seek some advice from the public.

The moon hasn’t had an easy time over the years. Since the beginning of the solar system
4.5 billion years ago, its gray and lifeless surface has been repeatedly hit by space rocks, leaving behind a landscape full of broken stones. Beneath this surface, however, hide the moon’s most attracting secrets for human explorers, from a large amount of ice for producing drinking water to rocket fuel. More importantly, mapping the moon’s subsurface can show some hidden periods of solar system history. This is confirmed by fresh results from a Chinese rover (月球车).
The latest results come from the Chang’e-4 mission, run by the China National Space Administration. Launched in December 2018 and reaching the moon in early January 2019, the mission became the first to land on the far side of the natural satellite, targeting a region near the lunar south pole called the South Pole-Aitken Basin. The Chang’e-4 rover is still operational today and has been slowly moving across this region, traveling a few hundred meters since it landed.
Using a radar instrument on Chang’e-4, researchers have found that the rover is likely sitting on different layers of ejecta ( 喷出物) and a very clear order of layers can be seen. The rover’s radar instrument was able to enter up to 40 meters below the surface of the moon, more than twice the distance achieved by the former, the Chang’e-3 mission, which landed on the moon near side in December 2013. Data from the latest mission show three different layers beneath the rove r. It is not currently possible to date the layers under Chang’e-4. But they do provide some information about lunar history dating back about four billion years.
The rover is continuing to move across the surface, making regular stops to take measurements and use its instruments.
28.What is the most important purpose of human’s exploration of the moon?
A.To seek fresh drinking water.
B.To find hidden rocket fuel.
C.To study different layers of ejecta.
D.To uncover the hidden history of solar system.
29.What do we know about the the Chang’e-4 mission?
A.It landed on the moon about five years later than Chang’e-3.
B.It is the first to travel around the moon during the exploration.
C.It took over a year from launch to land the far side of the moon.
D.A radar instrument helped it to enter 40 meters below the surface of the moon.
30.In which part of a magazine can this passage be read?

In October last year, an American entrepreneur (企业家) named Eliza Blank raised $5 million for the Sill, a New York brand (品牌) described on its website as “A modern plant

34.What makes for the success of the Sill?

She was a large woman with a large handbag that had everything in it except hammer and nails. It was about eleven o’clock at night, and she was walking alone, when a boy, fourteen or fifteen years old, ran up behind her and tried to snatch (抢夺) her handbag. The strap (带子) broke with the single pull the boy gave it from behind. But the boy’s weight and th e weight of the handbag caused him to lose his balance. As a result, instead of running away as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk, and his legs flew up.
The large woman simply turned around and kicked him right in his worn-out blue-jeaned sitter. Then she reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled ( 嘎嘎作响). After that the woman said, “Pick up my handbag, boy, and give it here.”She still held him, while he picked it up. Then she said, “Now aren’t you ashamed of yourself?” Firmly seized by his shirt front, the boy said, “Yes, madam.” The woman said, “What did you want to do it for?” “…a new pair of shoes…” the boy said, “I didn’t do it on purpose.” She said, “You’re lying!” She did not release (松开) him. “I’m very sorry, lady, I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“Um-hum! And your face is dirty. Aren’t you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face? Then it will get washed this evening,” said the large woman starting up the street, dragging the frightened weak boy behind her. Sweat came out on the boy’s face and he began to struggle. Mrs. Jones continued to drag him up the street. When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside. She turned on the light and left the door open. The woman still had him by the neck in the middle of her room. She said, “Then, you go to that sink and wash your face,” said the woman, then she released him at last.
