By the end of 2008 an estimated 33.4 million people worldwide were living with HIV. That same year, about 2 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses. Globally, less than one person in five at risk of HIV has access to basic HIV prevention services. Only 36% of people who needed HIV treatment had access to it by end-2009, using the WHO 2010 criterion for treatment initiation of a CD4 count of 350 cells/mm3.

Key factors needed include public education, affordable drugs, medical training for healthcare workers in hospitals and the public health system, monitoring and evaluation, care for orphans, measures to stop mother-to-child transmission, a comprehensive care framework and research into vaccines and a cure
What is HIV/AIDS?
AIDS is caused by HIV. HIV causes AIDS by killing the T-cells or by interfering with their normal function and by triggering other events that weaken a person’s immune function. Now the T-cells (a type of white blood cell) are important to your body because they are the killer cells that fight other cells that are trying to destroy the body.

Among women, the numbers are even more shocking--- almost 70 percent of all newly diagnosed HIV-positive women in the United States are black women. Black women are 23 times more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than white women, with heterosexual contact being the overwhelming method of infection in black America.

Last year, a research team at the University of Rochester Medical Center confirmed that such patients, called long-term nonprogressors, maintain higher than normal levels of the enzyme called APOBEC-3G (A3G) in their white blood cells, which function to stave off infections. Now, the same group has teamed up with a structural biologist to provide the first look at the A3G structure.
