第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)He was the man who inspired the Beat Generation, and nearly half a century after his death Jack Kerouac is still receiving grateful letters from his fans.
Most letters are sent in the post to his last home in St Petersburg, Florida, and the mail box in the front yard is full to bursting. But others are delivered by hand, pushed under the front door or left on the doorstep.
They usually thank the author of On the Road for inspiring them to travel and be independent. “You remind me to stay true to who you are and to enco urage a sense of adventure in all of us.” reads one letter, handwritten by “Cindy” on paper covered with pictures of butterflies and flowers. She adds, “I hope you’re writing, liberated and drinking a glass of wine.”
Another, signed “Friend of Jack”, reads, “I prefer to think of myself as a free spirit and a person who follows a path of her own choosing. You have always been my inspiration.”
His home, where he was living with his mother Gabrielle and his wife Stella, has become a destination for hundreds of fans every year.
Kerouac rocketed to fame at the age of 35, with the publication of On the Road in 1957.
But after becoming a symbol and leader of the alternative lifestyle movement, he struggled with that fame and claimed that he only wanted people to read his books.
Kerouac died just 12 years after On the Road was published. He was suffering from liver problem, following years of heavy drinking largely brought on by his love-hate relationship with fame.
Kerouac, the creator of vivid characters such as Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, died at a St Petersburg hospital in 1969, at the age of 47.
1、Why do people still write to Kerouac after his death?
A.His wife and mother still live in his home.
B.They are also suffering from serious illness.
C.People benefiting from his books want to say thanks.
D.People hope to learn how to deal with overnight fame.
2、What is On the Road probably about?
A.How to deal with becoming famous.
B.How vivid characters can be created.
C.Teaching people to appreciate his books.
D.Getting to know oneself better through travel.
3、What can we learn about Kerouac from the text?
A.He had great difficulty dealing with fame.
B.He was depressed because people didn’t read his books.
C.He drank a lot to celebrate his being famous for his works.
D.He was scolded because he promoted an alternative lifestyle.
22.(8分)Regardless of how far we’d like to believe gender(性别)equality in the workplace has come, there’s still a yawning gap between male and female leaders in the professional world. A 2018 statistic shows that women nowadays hold just 5.8 percent of CEOs positions at S&P 500 companies, according to Catalyst.
While it’s not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership positions, what is surprising though, is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area, at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School.
In their research, Professor Oyvind L. Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed (调查) 2,900 managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear: Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories.
While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders — probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women — this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting, openness, sociability and supportiveness, as well as ability to communicate clearly.
There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that women are more sensitive to the effects of
high-pressure or highly emotional situations.
O bviously, it’s important to consider individual (个人的) differences. Anyone, regardless of gender, may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss. But next time you’re hiring for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes (简历) from female candidates a harder look.
1、(小题1)What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?
A.Women are worse than men.
B.Men take almost all high positions.
C.There is a huge gap between genders.
D.Women might behave better in nearly every field.

23.(8分)Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making it possible for c ompanies to monitor workers’ behavior in great detail and in real time. Start to slack off (懈怠), and AI could talk to your boss.
One company offering such services is London-based start-up Status Today. Its AI platform relies on a regular supply of employee data, including everything from the files you access to when you use a key card. From this, it builds a picture of how employees normally function and signals any unusual performance. The idea is to spot when someone might become a security risk by doing something different from their usual behavioral patterns. “All of this gives us fingerprint of a user, so if we think the fingerprint doesn’t match, we raise a warning”, says Mircea Dumitrescu, the company’s chief technology officer.
The system also aims to catch employee actions that could accidentally cause a security breach (漏洞), like opening malware (恶意软件).“We’re not monitoring if your computer has a virus.” says Dumitrescu. “We’re monitoring human behaviors.”
But catching the security breach means monitoring everyone, and the AI can also be used to track employee productivity. “It seems like they are just using the reputation of AI to give an air of lawfulness to old-fashioned workplace surveillance (监视),” says Javier Ruiz Diaz of digital campaigning organization the Open Rights Group. “You have a right to privacy and you shouldn’t be expected to give that up at work.”
Exactly how companies use the system will be up to them, but it’s hard to shake the picture of an AI constantly looking over employees’ shoulders. “It will bother people, and that could be counterproductive if it affects their behavior,” says Paul Bemal at the University of East Anglia.
Phil Legg at the University of the West of England says it will never catch every security risk. “If peo ple know they’re being monitored, they can change their behavior,” he says.
1、According to the text, AI monitors employees by ________.
A.taking pictures of them B.getting access to their data
C.signaling their usual performance D.catching their actions
2、What’s Javier Ruiz Diaz’s attitude towards the system?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive.
C.Uncaring. D.Negative.
3、What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Security breach. B.Employees’ productivity.
C.The right to privacy. D.Workplace surveillance.
4、Phil Legg’s concern about the system suggests that ________.
A.it is too risky to be used at work
B.it will affect employees’ emotions
C.it may not be so effective as expected
D.it will encourage employee, productivity

25.(10分)During Amsterdam’s chaotic rush hour, nine-year-old Lotta Crok cycles to a very busy junction. “Look,” she says. “There’s traffic coming from everywhere. Four trams from four different directions. For a child on a bike that’s really confusing!”
Lotta is the first junior cycle mayor in the world and her working area is the Dutch capital. You would think this challenge would be superfluous in a city known as the bicycle capital of the world. The number of bicycles in Amsterdam is estimated at 881,000 –more than the city’s 850,000 inhabitants – and 63% of the population cycle daily.
But children who cycle in Amsterdam face challenges, Lotta says: “The three biggest problems for us are cars, cycling tourists and scooters (小型摩托). The cars take up too much space, the tourists are always swinging side to side and stop when you least expect it, and the scooters simply run you over.”
Lotta became junior cycle mayor in June last year when she won a contest in which schoolchildren were asked to come up with plans to make cycling safer and more fun. Her idea was to add children’s bikes to the popular bike share programme.
Since Lotta was appointed junior cycle mayor, she has been busy, giving interviews, opening cycling contests in the city and being a jury(评审员)member during the Amsterdam Light Parade, an event in which Amsterdammers decorate their bikes with lights.
She is now planning a meeting with the city’s mayor to discuss ideas that children have come up with: “One of our proposals is a bicycle park where children can learn how to cycle. Right now, most of us learn it in the street, which can be quite busy. Another idea is to create an app for tourists to teach them the rules of cycling, because most of them really
don’t know.”
Following the success of the Amsterdam scheme, cycle mayors around the world are now planning to appoint junior colleagues. “They see it works really well,” Boerma, the senior major, says. “I talk to the parents, Lotta talks to the children. And if you look at the city through the eyes of a child, you will also make it accessible for others. A city that’s good for an eight-year-old is also good for an 88-year-old.”
1、Why is a junior cycle mayor appointed in Amsterdam?
A.To teach children how to ride.
B.To ensure cycling is safer for children.
C.To give suggestions to the city’s mayor o n how to run the city.
D.To organize the cycling contests in the city.
2、Which word can best replace the underlined word “superfluous” in paragraph 2?
A.Important B.Unnecessary
C.Difficult D.Valuable
3、What has Lotta done since she became the bike mayor?
A.She has solved the three biggest problems for children cycling in Amsterdam.
B.She has won a contest about cycling.
C.She has given interviews and been a jury member during a parade.
D.She has given proposals to the city mayor.
4、What ’s Boerma’s attitude to the junior cycle mayor?
A.Cautious B.Favorable
C.Ambiguous D.Disapproving

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear Sir,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Guangming middle school. I’m writing to express my opinions about the shared bike.
Being convenient and environmentally friendly, shared bikes have already been popular throughout China.
However, with its rapid development, it brings about many problems. In some places shared bikes are left everywhere and sidewalks are occupied. What’s worse, some people even damage them or take them just as their own possessions.
In my opinion, it’s the lack of public awareness and related laws that results in such phenomena. To solve the problems, measures must be taken right away. First, the government should make some strict laws and rules to regulate the operation and management of the shared bikes. Second, the public should raise their awareness of using the bikes correctly and gracefully.
I hope you will take my advice into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
