If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what's around. It's called Apple Day but in practice it's more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.
Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn't taste of anything special, it's still worth a try, as is the knobbly (多疙瘩的) Cat's Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.
There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you'll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it's a_pipe_dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.
At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with applethemed fun and games.
Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards (果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.
1.What can people do at the apple events?
A.Attend experts' lectures.
B.Visit fruitloving families.
C.Plant fruit trees in an orchard.
D.Taste many kinds of apples.
2.What can we learn about Decio?
A.It is a new variety.
B.It has a strange look.
C.It is rarely seen now.
D.It has a special taste.
3.What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 me an?
A.A practical idea.
B.A vain hope.
C.A brilliant plan.
D.A selfish desire.
4.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To show how to grow apples.
B.To introduce an apple festival.
C.To help people select apples.
D.To promote apple research.

It will be very hard but also very brittle—that is, it will break easily.
Come up with a catchy headline that will grasp someone's attention.
例如:The “Chunnel”, a tunnel(隧道) connecting England and France, is now complete.此句中a tunnel connecting England and France是Chunnel的同位语。
A child’s birthday party doesn’t have to be a hassle; it can be a basket of fun.

I wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that's impossible. For the most part Chinese people are friendly, easygoing and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the hardest working people I have ever met.
In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends. I teach many students a year, talking to them freely.
The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US. The city of Xiang Fan I live in isn't large and I live better. Nonimported(非进口的)foods are very cheap, so are clothing and articles of everyday use. The cost of public transportation is very low, too. Chinese value education. However, it is reported that many children can't afford the expenses of schooling and
are forced to leave school in some poor areas in China. But they organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion, Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education.
When we read news of China in the west, rarely, if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles have not reached many areas of China, but we also have the same problems.
When I am asked which country I consider better, China or the US, my answer has always been the same, “We are not worse or better than each other; we are only different.”
5.What is the author doing in China?
A.He is teaching English in a school.
B.He is visiting the places of interest.
C.He is studying in a college.
D.He is on business.
6.What are NOT cheap in China in the author's opinion?
A.Clothes and shoes made in China.
B.Local foods.
C.Imported foods.
D.Public transportation tickets.
7.We can infer from the passage that the author thinks ________.
A.the westerners have got to know China well
B.the progress of China is seldom reported in the US
C.China's economic miracles have appeared everywhere
D.the education in rural areas is never cared about in China

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who ha d not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others fe lt good about them.”
Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25,31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mentalhealth scores with their boyhoodactivity scores. Points were awarded for parttime jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”
8.What do we know about John?
A.He enjoyed his career and marriage.
B.He had few childhood playmates.
C.He received little love from his family.
D.He was envied by others in his childhood.
9.Vaillant's words in Paragraph 2 serve as ________.
A.a description of personal values and social values
B.an analysis of how work was related to competence
C.an example for parents' expectations of their children
D.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men
10.Vaillant's team obtained their findings by ________.
A.recording the boys' effort in school
B.evaluating the men's mental health
C.comparing different sets of scores
D.measuring the men's problemsolving ability
11.What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Quick to react.
B.Having a thin edge.
C.Clear and definite.
D.Sudden and rapid.

Let's face it.No one drinks diet(饮食)soda(苏打) for the taste.People drink diet soda in the
hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it.Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist(腰) size increases that were six times greater than those of people who didn't drink diet soda.“What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,” said Sharon Fowler.
The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.
While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.
Nutrition(营养) expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched(改变) from regular to diet soda, they don't lose weight at all.“We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,” said Rogers.
So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they d rink diet soda, and so overcompensate (补偿)for the missing calories(卡路里热量单位).
A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice.” Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial(人造的) sweeteners may be risky,” said study researcher Helen P·Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas's school of medicine. They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.
12.People drink diet soda to ________.
A.stay in fashion
B.enjoy its taste
C.gain more energy
D.achieve weight loss
13.The new study suggests that drinking diet soda______.
A.helps people to be healthier
B.causes people to become heavier
C.offers people more calories
D.makes people much thinner
14.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food
B.regular soda makes people lose more weight
C.most blood diseases come from diet soda
D.diet soda does help reduce calories
15.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

如一些表示转折的连词,but,However,yet,though,nevertheless等,另外还有一些表示并列关系的连词如and,also,as well as,neither nor,either or,not only...but also,on one hand....on the other hand等。

Dear William,
Recently, I have heard that you feel stressed about study. I have a good kind to offer you some advice on how to study effectively.
First of all, learn in a relaxing way. This will remove our pressure, making study an easy job. One way to keep up our spirits is to take part in sports. Not only does exercise build up the body, but also it provides us time to relax and fresh our mind. In this way we can memorize things faster and longer. Music, too, is another effective means of refreshing and helping us concentrate better.
Last but not least, we should exchange ideas with our classmates. Through the communication we can find support, which will encourage us to overcome difficulties in our study. Keep trying, and we will make it.
I hope all these can benefit you.
Yours,
Li Hua
