My 7th Grade English Class
English class this year has been a lot of fun! We just started the third unit in our textbooks and I'm really excited about all the new things we're going to learn.
This unit is all about describing people and places. We've already learned a bunch of new adjectives to describe how people look and sound. Words like "tall", "short", "loud", "quiet" and so on. Our teacher had us go around the class and describe our classmates, which was kind of funny. Jimmy described Samantha as "a very loud girl with curly brown hair". Samantha didn't seem too happy about that!
We also learned how to describe personalities and emotions using adjectives like "kind", "mean", "happy", "sad" and so forth. I described my best friend Michael as "a really kind and funny guy". He's always cracking jokes to make everyone laugh.
Describing places is cool too. We learned words like "big", "small", "modern", "old" to talk about buildings, parks, towns and more. I had to describe my hometown for homework last night. I wrote that it's "a small, quiet town with beautiful old buildings and a big park in the center." I really like where I live!
What I'm most excited about in this unit though, is learning how to describe things in more detail using more advanced adjectives. Our teacher said we'll learn words like "enormous", "stunning", "dilapidated" and "pristine". Those are some big words but I can't wait to use them! Imagine calling the new mall "an enormous, pristine shopping complex". That just sounds so much more descriptive and interesting.
We're also going to learn how to string multiple adjectives together properly. Like saying "the tall, ancient, dilapidated castle" instead of just "the old, tall castle". Putting the adjectives in the right order makes the descriptions more vivid.
Another thing I'm looking forward to is reading the stories and doing the activities in this unit. There are some really cool ones coming up! One story is about a boy visiting his aunt in a small fishing village. I'll get to describe the village and the aunt's house using all the new vocabulary. There's also an article about famous landmarks around the world, with pictures to describe.
One of the activities has us working in small groups to describe different objects, like a cell phone or backpack. Each group has to try and make their description as clear and detailed as possible, so the other groups can guess what they're describing. It's like a fun little game of auditory Pictionary!
Overall, I'm super psyched about this new unit. Learning all these descriptive words is going to be amazing. My writing assignments and speaking activities will be so much more interesting and vivid. I can't wait to impress my parents with huge, flowery descriptions like "the colossal, immaculate living room with its sparkling chandelier and plush, burgundy sofa." That's the kind of advanced vocabulary that's really going to make my English skills skyrocket!

My Life as a Middle Schooler
Wow, being in 7th grade is crazy! So much has changed since elementary school. My days are a total whirlwind bouncing between classes, activities, homework, and hanging out with my friends. I hardly have a moment to catch my breath!
The biggest difference is having to change classes every period. In elementary school, I stayed in the same room all day with the same teacher. But now I have lockers lining the hallways and I have to carry my books and supplies from room to room.
At first, I was worried I'd get lost or be late, but I've got the schedule down now. I do miss having just one teacher though - now I have to keep track of six different teachers' expectations and personalities. Some are pretty strict while others are more laid-back.
The academic workload is also a huge step up. The homework assignments are longer, the material is way more advanced, and we have a bunch of big projects and tests. Algebra is kicking my butt this semester! I have to study way harder than I ever did in elementary school. Thank goodness for my study group - we help keep each other motivated and on track. The peer tutoring center has also been a life-saver when I get stuck.
Another big change is having a homeroom period. This is when we get announcements, do activities as a homeroom, and have discussions on different topics. It's a nice break in the day, though the discussions can get pretty heated sometimes! People have such different opinions and perspectives.
Probably the biggest deal for me has been the whole social scene of middle school. Everything revolves around friends, crushes, gossip, trends, and staying popular. There are all these unspoken rules and subtle social dynamics. It's like walking
through a minefield sometimes! I've had some fallouts with friends over silly misunderstandings, and felt totally left out when I didn't get included in something. But I've also made some amazing new friends and have the best memories hanging out, joking around, and being totally silly and carefree.
I'll never forget the stomach-twisting nerves of having my first crush. Getting up the courage to talk to them felt like climbing Mount Everest! My friend wrote a note asking if they liked me back, and waiting for their response was agonizing. When they said yes, I was over the moon! We "went out" for about two weeks before we broke up, ha! Even though it was short-lived puppy love, I'll always remember that giddy, butterfly-feeling of having a boyfriend for the first time.
Then there's the whole deal of looking cool and keeping up with the latest trends in fashion, music, YouTubers, etc. You do NOT want to be caught un-cool! There's so much pressure to fit in, but also find your own unique style and individuality. I've definitely had some cringey fashion moments, looking back! At least I'm figuring out what I like and establishing my own identity, apart from just going along with whatever is popular.
Outside of school, my life is a juggling act between activities and commitments. I'm on the volleyball team, take art classes,
babysit my little cousins, go to youth group at church, and more. On top of that, I have mountains of homework every night. Time management is an ongoing struggle, but I'm slowly getting better at using a planner and not procrastinating as much. It's hard to have any free time, but when I do, I love cozying up on the couch and binge-watching my favorite shows with some snacks. Self-care is key when you're this busy!
Overall, middle school has been a crazy roller coaster so far. The academic demands, social challenges, and time commitments can be really overwhelming at times. But I've also had incredible growth, made amazing memories, and am figuring out who I am and what I value. Could I go back to the simplicity of elementary school? No way! Despite how nuts middle school is, I'm loving this new phase of independence and maturity. It's a blast being on the brink of high school and the teenage years. Bring it on!

My Life as a 7th Grader
Hi there! My name is Alex, and I'm a 7th grade student at Oakwood Middle School. Being in 7th grade is such a cool experience – it's like being one of the "big kids" on campus, but
not quite a teenager yet. Let me tell you all about my daily life and what it's like being a 12-year-old these days.
I wake up around 6:30 am during the school week. My mom makes me breakfast – usually cereal or toast – and I get ready for school. I have to wear a uniform, which is kind of lame, but at least I don't have to put too much thought into picking out an outfit every morning. I pack up my backpack with my books, notebooks, pencil case, water bottle, and snacks for the day.
The school day starts at 8 am, so I'm out the door by 7:30 to catch the school bus or get a ride from my dad if he's not working early. Once I get to school, I go to my locker to drop off my backpack and grab what I need for my first few classes. The hallways are always so crowded and noisy in the mornings with everyone catching up with their friends.
My classes rotate throughout the day – I have math, science, English, social studies, and electives like art, music, or computer lab. I really like my English and computer classes this year. In English, we're reading some cool books and working on writing skills. In computer lab, we're learning coding and how to build websites, which is fun. Math is probably my least favorite, though – I just find it kind of boring.
We get a short break in the mid-morning for snacks and to run around outside for recess, which is nice to have that break from sitting at desks all day. Then it's back to classes until lunchtime around noon. The cafeteria food isn't amazing, but I can usually find something decent to eat.
After lunch, we have a few more class periods in the afternoon. Finally, the end of the school day comes at 3 pm! Once classes are over, I either go to an afterschool activity like sports practice, club meetings, or just hang out with friends, or I head home. My parents try to make sure I get any homework done before going out to play videogames or watch TV.
One thing I like about being in 7th grade is that we get a bit more freedom and responsibilities than the younger kids. We can go on class field trips, have special dances and events, and take on leadership roles at school. Of course, we also have to take standardized tests and the workload gets harder – but that's life, I guess!
Some of my other favorite things about this age are hanging out with my friends, getting money for doing chores so I can buy games and stuff, going to the movies, and just generally having more independence than when I was little. Don't get me wrong,
though – I still love my parents and like spending time with my family.
I'm excited for the next few years of middle school and looking forward to being a teenager soon (although I'm sure I'll think differently once I'm actually a moody teen!). Being a tween in 7th grade is a pretty awesome phase of life. We get to be kids but also start practicing to be more grown up. There's so much to learn and look forward to still!
