The unique colouration (自然花纹) of the giant panda that is loved by many people has long been a mystery to scientists. But now a joint research team believes they have solved the mystery, once and for all.
The black and white patches on the giant panda mainly have two functions—camouflage (伪装) and communication, the joint research team from the University of California, Davis and California State University, Long Beach explains.
The giant panda's white face, nape(脖颈), dorsum(背部), belly, and rump (臀部) are adapted for crypsis (隐蔽) against a snowy background, whereas its black shoulders and legs are adapted for crypsis in shade, according to the study that the joint research team published in the journal of Behavioural Ecology on Feb.28.
However, dark markings on the head are not used in crypsis, but in communication: dark ears may be involved with signaling intention about aggressive behaviour while dark eye marks may serve in individual recognition, according to the study.
There is no strong evidence for their fur colour being involved in temperature regulation, disrupting the animal's outline or in reducing eye glare, the study explains.
“Understanding why the giant panda has such striking colouration has been a long-standing problem in biology that has been difficult to tackle because actually no other mammal has this appearance, making analogies difficult,” said Dr Tim Karo, a professor from the University of California and the lead researcher.

Deep in the islands on the Andaman Sea,and along the west coast of Thailand live small tribes called the Moken people, also known as sea-nomads (海上牧民).Their children spend much of their day in the sea, diving for food. They are uniquely adapted to this job—because they can see underwater. And it turns out that with a little practice, their unique vision might be accessible to any young person.
In 1999,Anna Gislen at Lund University in Sweden was delving into different aspects of vision, when a colleague suggested that she might be interested in studying the unique characteristics of the Moken people.
Gislen and her six-year-old daughter travelled to Thailand and lived within the Moken communities, who mostly lived on houses sat upon poles.Gislen set up an experiment to test just how good the children's underwater vision really was.The kids were excited about joining in.
The kids had to dive underwater and place their heads onto a panel(表盘).From there they could see a card displaying quite a few lines.Once they had stared at the card, they came back to the surface to report where the lines travelled. Each time they dived down, the lines would get thinner, making the task harder. It turned out that the Moken children were able to see twice as well as the European children who performed the same experiment.
Gislen figured that in order to see clearly underwater, the Moken children must have either picked up some adaptation that completely changed the way their eyes worked,or they had learned to use their eyes differently underwater.
16.Why are the Moken people known as sea-nomads?
