12. Last Saturday morning, Jasmine Harrison became the youngest woman to row (划船) alone across an ocean. It took the 21-year-old swimming teacher just over 70 days to row across the Atlantic Ocean.
Ms. Harrison, who’s from North Yorkshire, England, didn’t have loads of experience in rowing long distances. She’d only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge(TWAC). “I just thought, I want to do this, so I’m going to do it,”she said.
Every year, rowers taking part in the Atlantic Campaign set off from the Canary Islands in December and row roughly 4,828 kilometers across the Atlantic. Every day,
Ms. Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 250-kilogram boat across the ocean. On average, she rowed about 20,000 strokes a day.
Ms. Harrison had a satellite phone that allowed her to talk with family and friends every day. But the journey still left her with much time all by herself, which she says she enjoyed. But things got harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her favorite songs.
Along the way she saw lots of sea life, including several mild whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. For several days, she was followed by a small group of dolphins. “I’m in their environment,” she said. “It’s just amazing.” But there was danger, too. Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. “Everything happened when I was asleep,” she said.
Somehow, Ms. Harrison kept going. On February 20, after 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes, she reached the island of Antigua—the end of the journey. Her trip didn’t just set a record, it also raised over £18,500 for two charities: Blue Marine Foundation, which works to control overfishing, and ShelterBox, which helps people who have suffered from natural disasters.
【小题1】What made Ms. Harrison decide to join in the Atlantic Campaign? A.Her watching TWAC.B.Her participation in the 2017 event.

13. What will the future be like? Will the world be greener and more beautiful? Will people live more happily and more conveniently? Probably people will lead a better life.
The Spring Festival, the most important Chinese holiday when everyone returns home has caused headaches for millions of Chinese. More than 2 billion people travel at the same time, making getting travel tickets and the journey arduous. But in several decades, the Spring Festival travel may not be a problem at all. China plans to build more than 120,000 kilometers of railway and a fast transportation network that will serve 90% of the population.
And because most of China will be cities, people will not have to go to other places to find jobs, so it will no longer be a problem. In the future, new information about timely events will be sent by humans or even robots to personal web tools through the Internet. That means only digital (数字化的) newspapers can be seen. Readers can discuss topics with journalists and editors. Information will move faster.
Oil is running out faster than expected. But scientists have found something else for oil as fuel. Coal, natural gas, solar power, nuclear power and even water can take the place of oil as sources (来源) of energy.
Schools will go electronic. Everything will be in the computer and students will not need to bring books to school. They will find information on the Internet. A computer will be the students’ library, schoolbag and connection to the outside world. There will be robot teachers, who will check homework on computers and communicate with the students’parents through emails. And school buses will be like spaceships, comfortable and safe.
However, what can the future actually become? It remains to be seen.

14. For the general public confused by the heated discussion on human cloning, A Clone of Your Own? does an admirable job in explaining many of the ethical (伦理的) and scientific problems. Drawing from literature, the visual arts, films and her personal experiences, Arlene Judith Klotzko has created an overview of cloning. Klotzko tells us about the early experiments that Aristotle did with chicken embryos (胚胎); about a German scientist, Hans Spemann, who figured out the theory of cloning some sixty years before we actually succeeded in cloning; about Dolly, the first cloned sheep at Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute; and about the current successes and failures in attempts to cloning.
The book paints a picture of human cloning as a worthwhile job. Klotzko lists many potential benefits that cloning could have. She also, following several others, makes clear many of the common misunderstanding concerning cloning, and puts in plain words the limited effect that genes have on shaping the kind of people we become.
A Clone of Your Own? provides clear explanations of both the basic scientific and ethical problems surrounding cloning. Klotzko appears to have drawn on a wide range of published work on the ethics of cloning, and makes a large number of the
arguments in the literature in this short book. However, readers who are unaware of the literature may be left with the impression that Klotzko is the first and the only person to have written on the ethics of cloning, which is far from the case. It is a pity that the author and the publisher have provided so little reference to the ethics literature and given so little sign that they are aware of it. Whether one's interest lies in the science or the ethics of cloning, the short list of further reading provided at the end of the book is unhelpful and misleading.
But this warning aside, the drawings in this book and Klotzko’s words make the book highly approachable. The public who would like to understand what the debate on human cloning is should read this book.
【小题1】What does Klotzko tell us in A Clone of Your Own?
A.Aristotle gave the theory of cloning.B.Dolly is the earliest cloned animal. C.Spemann cloned the first sheep.D.Cloning is a heated topic.

B.Publishers offer reference to ethics literature.
C.The list of further reading provided in the book is helpful.

【小题4】What is the purpose of the text?
A.To recommend a book.B.To explain a problem.

19. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As the graduation ceremony’s class speaker, Verda Tetteh, a senior at Fitchburg High School, had just finished her speech and taken a seat when the school made an exciting announcement that Verda had been awarded Fitchburg High School’s General Excellence Scholarship, valued at $ 40,000. She had a few moments to reflect as the ceremony continued. Ten minutes later, she knew what to do. She returned to the platform and apologized for interrupting. Then she made an announcement that shocked the crowd. She refused the scholarship and requested that the funds instead be awarded to a student who needed it more than she did.
“I am very grateful for this, but I also know that I am not the one who needs this the most,” Verda said.
Her generous gesture shocked the audience, made up of her fellow classmates, their families and faculty (全体教员) members. Her mother, Rosemary, loudly cheered her daughter on from the audience.
Verda is planning on going to Harvard University in the fall as a pre-med (医学院预科的) student. The straight-A honor student has already been awarded a full scholarship for her Ivy League college education. However, she could have used her school’s scholarship to help pay for additional expenses such as books, computers and living expenses.
Verda knew, though, just how important a college scholarship is to a student whose family is financially struggling. Her mother earned her bachelor’s degree from a local community college at age 47, while raising her four children and holding down two
jobs to support her family. Her mother’s determination to get an education despite her financial hardship inspired the young woman’s selfless decision. She wanted the funds to go to a student pursuing a community college degree, just as her mother once had. That day, Rosemary took pride in her daughter. “Now I’m 100% sure she is ready to go into the world on her own,” she said.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
