The Oxford English Dictionary has just named its Word of the Year. From “Eurogeddon”, to “green-on-blue” and Games Maker” to “Mobot”, many words that have crossed over into real usage had been shortlisted. The winner of the American edition(版本)is GIF-- short for Graphics Interchange Format (图像互换格式). The winning word of the British edition is “omnishambles”- a situation that has been completely mismanaged because of careless mistakes.
Language is as old as humans. In some ways it is surprising that languages change at all. It’s interesting to note that the English language has developed more rapidly in the last few centuries, adding many words to its vocabulary, than just a few centuries ago. As the language develops, it will be interesting to follow the influences of social events, new technologies, industries, products and experiences that bring more richness to our language.
Over the last few years, the influence of the Internet has without exception been the greatest on our society. It has given us many words-maybe even taking over the English language. And this year is no exception. The American edition’s word this year is GIF.
GIF refers to a type of format for pictures that can be used to create simple animations (动画). Have you seen a flip book or perhaps created one? These are books with a little picture up in the right-hand corner of each page and if you flip the pages quickly enough it appears as if the little pictures are moving. Similarly to create a GIF, you can put some pictures together. When you move these pictures rather quickly, your eyes see them as movement.
GIF made its simple beginning in 1987. While it is more usually pronounced with hard g (like [g] in “great”), the programmers who developed the format prefer the use of a soft g (like [dʒ] in “general”). Animated GIFs are now commonly seen on the Internet This year, the animated Gangnam style GIF was extremely popular.

A. the Oxford English Dictionary is worth buying

57. Which of the following words has a soft g?
A. Gog .
B. Sign.
C. Garden.
D. Gentle.
58. What would the author most probably talk about next?
A. something about “omnishambles”.

C. the future of the Internet.
D. The history of languages.

Smoking remains one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK with around 100,000 people dying each year from illnesses connected with the habit. Under-18s in England will not be allowed to buy electronic cigarettes (香烟), the government has announced. Experts say it is not yet known what harm they could cause and that the things inside them could be damaging young people’s heath.
Around 1.3 million people in the UK use e-cigarettes which were designed to help people give up smoking. It will be illegal for adults to buy traditional cigarettes for anyone under 18. The new rule could be in force by the autumn and may mean anyone caught buying cigarettes for a child could be given a fine of 50-2,500 pounds.
“We must do all we can to help children lead a healthy life,”Public Health Minister Jane Ellison said. Some 41% of 15-year-olds who smoke say they usually buy their cigarettes from someone else, rather than from a shop, according to the Department of Health.
But while the number of smokers has fallen to the lowest ever level, experts fear e-cigarettes could be encouraging teenagers to take up the habit. E-cigarettes, popular with teenagers, contain a hit of nicotine (尼古丁)and give off water vapour to make people have the feeling and look of smoking.
“We do not yet know the harm that e-cigarettes can cause to adults, let alone to children, but we do know they are nor risk free,”Prof. Dame Sally Davies, England’s chief medical officer, said. “E-cigarettes can produce toxic chemicals and a small amount of nicotine and other things that could be extremely damaging yo young people’s health,” he added.
Now the UK has few rules on the use of e-cigarettes, even though there are measures in some other countries. New rules have recently been drawn up for discussion in Scotland and Wales. Ash, a charity that is against smoking, welcomed the changes but chief executive Deborah Arnott added, “We hope that cigarettes will only legally be sold in shops, not in car boot sales (跳蚤市场).”

A.clean.
B. harmless.

A. make sure of high-quality cigarettes
B. stop children buying cigarettes
C. make car boot sales disappear
D. protect those cigarette shops
62. What would be the best title for the text?
A. What are electronic cigarettes?
B. The rise of e-cigarettes in the UK

In Japan, hikikomori is a word used to describe the young people who hide away. “ They want to go out in the world, they want to make friends, but they can’t,” says Tamaki Saito, a doctor who has been studying the social problem since the early 1990s.
Although it’s hard to tell the exact number of today’s hikikomori, it actually remains very high. A 2010 study for the Japanese Cabinet Office reported it was 700,000. Since suffers are always hidden away, Saito himself places the number higher, at around one million. And the age of hikikomori seems to have risen over the last twenty years. Before it was twenty-one—now it is thirty-two.
What first caused a boy to hide away from society might be slight—poor grades or broken heart, for example—but it can also become a source of suffering. And powerful social forces can strongly keep him staying in his bedroom.
One such force is sekentei, a person’s reputation(声誉)in the neighborhood and the difficulty he or she has in impressing others. The longer hikikomori remain apart from society, the more they realize their social failure. They lose whatever confidence they had and the possibility of leaving home.
Andy Furlong, an expert at the University of Glasgow, connects the increase in the number of hikikomori with the rapid economic growth in the 1980s and the slowdown in the a990s. It was at this point that the conveyor belt (传送带)of good school grades leading to good university places leading jobs-for-life broke down. The Japanese youth at the time were faced with the reality of short-term, part-time work .
And it came with the loss of respect. Those who change their jobs frequently are called “freelance ( 自由职业的)”and the German word for “worker”, arbeiter. In public discussion, freeters are often connected with “neets”—a word made up from the first letters of “not in education, employment or training”. Neets, freeters and hikikomori are often used to describe the good-for-nothing young people.
Needless to say, what matters most is how to get those who hide away to return to society. Tamaki Saito’s approach is to begin with “reorganizing”the relationship between these patients and their parents. .
63. What can we learn about hikikomori?

Figures show an increase in the number of school teachers who are going back to the classroom to get a qualification in TEFL—teaching English as a foreign language.
Teachers are paying for extra evening classes and weekend courses to enable themselves to deal with an increase in the number of children who speak English as a second language, research suggests. The number of classroom teachers gaining qualifications in “teaching English as a foreign language”has increased by as much as 77 percent in just a year. In most cases, teachers are paying for lessons from their own pocket to enable themselves to adequately satisfy students who speak other languages in the home.
The report follows the publication of figures showing that record numbers of children in state schools do not use English as their mother tongue. In the last academic year, more than one million children were officially registered as speaking other languages such as Bengali, Punjabi, Hindi, Arabic, Somali, Portuguese, French and Polish in the home. One in five students in primary education speak English as a second language. In some parts of inner London, native English speakers are now in a minority, with the proportion (比例) as low as a quarter in towns such as Tower Hamlets, Newham and Westminster.
New research by i-to-i, an educational company, shows that rising numbers of classroom teachers are now seeking additional qualifications in TEFL to improve the learning experience of students in their classes.
James Jenkin, the organization’s academic director, said, “we’ve seen an increase in demand over the last year from qualified teachers looking to teach English as a second language in UK classrooms. In
an area heavily populated with students who speak English as a second language, having no training in teaching these students is harmful to their education and potentially to the teachers’ career.”
The company surveyed people on its TEFL courses between May and August last year. It found that 117 of the 361 students were existing classroom teachers. This compared with 66 at the same stage a year earlier. It’s reported that around half of the qualified classroom teachers on this year’s courses live in London, which has the largest number of children speaking other languages. Of those teachers taking courses in TEFL, which typically cost up to £299, and not being funded by schools, 89 percent said they did it to “improve the learning experience of their English as second language students”..
67. The tuition fees for teachers’ courses in TEFL are paid by______.
A. the government
B. public school
C. the teachers themselves
D. parents of their students
68. Why do more and more native English teachers take courses in TEFL?
A. Because schools require them to do so.
B. Because foreign students like experienced teachers.
C. Because teachers’ career depends on continuous training.
D. Because their teaching career may be affected.
69. From the passage we can infer that_________
A. it is rather difficult for teachers to gain qualifications in TEFL
B. more teachers are wanted in England.
C. English is getting more and more popular as a second language
D. the number of foreign students in England is getting larger
70. From which part of a website could this passage most probably be taken?
A. Culture
B. Education
C. Health
D. Fashion
