13、Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no medicine, either.
Life today brings new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and we become angry more easily.
Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is very thick. People cannot see the sky clearly.
Many countries are making rules to fight against pollution. Factories now must clean their water before they throw it away. And they mustn’t let dirty smoke go into the air.
There are many things we can do to fight against pollution. We should put waste things in dustbins and do not throw them on the ground. We should go to work by bike or on foot instead of taking a car or a bus. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.

16、I have a rule for travel: never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions.
Foreign visitors are often puzzled (迷惑的) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people uselandmarksin their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go pass a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat (平坦的). In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas or lowa, for example, people will say, “Go n orth two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map: the measure (测量) distance by means of time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” you say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because visitors seldom understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happen in this situation? A New Yorker might say, “sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answer, “I don’t know.” They think that it is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get lost in Yucatan.
One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, by maybe you can understan d his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction.

A young man woke up one morning under a bridge and checked his pocket. All he had left was less than ten dollars. He bought food and as he sat down to eat, an old man and two children came along. The old man asked him to help them with food as they had not eaten for almost a week.
The young man looked at the children---they were so weak that they could hardly stand. With the last bit of kindness he had he gave them all the food. The old man and children thanked the young man and then gave him a dirty old coin. The young man said, “You need this coin more than I do--- just keep it.” The old man insisted(坚持) that the young man put it in his pocket---and finally he did.
The old man and children sat down to eat. And with no money, no job and no food, the young man went back under the bridge to lie down. As he was about to fall asleep he saw an old newspaper on the ground. He picked it up and saw an ad inviting people with old coins to come to a store. He decided to go there with the dirty old coin the man gave him.
When he arrived at the store, he gave the keeper the dirty old coin. The keeper cried loudly. It was part of a Spanish treasure ship that had never been found. This same old coin was worth 67,000 dollars. The young man was pleased. He immediately sold the coin for money and then looked for the old man and little children to thank them and share the money. 18、A gift card is a card that is issued(发行) by a store. These cards are big money makers for stores. One reason is that when gift-card holders go to the store, they often see other things to buy,and they spend more money than the gift card is worth.Unused cards are another reason.Stores make millions of dollars because large numbers of people never use their cards. They either lose them, forget about them,or decide that it's not worth the effort.
Gift card are becoming very popular in many countries around the world. In the US,they are one of the most popular
kinds of gifts. Why?People love the convenience—gift cards are easy to buy and easy to use, either in the store or online. The recipient can choose his or her own gift, and the giver does not have to worry about finding just the right thing.
Receiving a gift card, however,is not the same as receiving a gift.A real gift is a better reminder of the person who gave it.The message of a real gift is more likely to be,"I spend some time trying to find the right gift for you because I care about you."Often a gift card does not send the same message as a real gift.It may seem to say,"I was in a hurry.I didn't have time to think about what you would really like."
In today's world, gift cards are certainly convenient. However, they can make us forget the real purpose of giving
gifts, which is to build a closer connection between the gift-giver and the gift-recipient.
1.What does the underline word"recipient"mean in Chinese?
A.商家B.顾客C.发行者D.接受者
2.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Why gift cards are popular in the US. B.Different kinds of gift cards.
C.Where to buy gift cards. D.How to use gift cards.
3.What message does a gift card send according to the writer?
A.I care about you. B.I know you like the gift cards.
C.I couldn’t find the right gift for you.D.I didn’t have time to buy you a real gift.
4.Which of the following is the writer's opinion?
A.It's easy for people to lose gift cards. B.Gift cards are better than real gifts.
C.Gift cards help people save money. D.Real gifts can bring people closer.
