Could smells affect your lifespan? Female fruit flies(果蝇) without the ability to smell food live longer than other fruit flies. The sense of smell may be connected to the cellular ageing (细胞老化) process in many other living things—even people. Such connection has recently been found in both worms and flies. For example, scientists found that removing fruit flies’ ability to smell made them live nearly 20 percent longer t han flies with a sense of smell.
They confirmed that food smells were the ones most likely to affect ageing, as nutrition and lifespan are known to be connected in many living things. To test the idea that food smells affect lifespan, they removed flies’ ability to smell carbon dioxide, which is produced by some fly foods. They left the rest of the smelling system intact.
This action had no effect on male flies, but the females lived 30 percent longer than normal. Removing the ability to smell CO2 may stop flies getting information about food availability. This could mean that food is not enough, causing processes that encourage flies to survive. Scientists found that the female flies stored extra fat and that both males and females immune(免疫) to CO2 were stronger against the stress than normal flies. It is suggested that females may simply be easily influenced by the smells of CO2.
Scientists point out that people don’t know whether ageing and smell are connected in
animals and humans. But they clearly experience physical changes after smelling food.
21. From the passage, we learn that what scientists found is to_____________

A. CO2 has few effects on female flies.
B. The sense of smell might have an effect on living things.
C. The sense of smell is necessary to humans’ health.

When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to go to face the music,” It doesn’t mean
he is planning to go to a concert . It is somethin g far less pleasant, like being called
in by your boss to explain why you did this or that , and why you did not do this or that .
Sour (刺耳)music , indeed , but it has to be faced .
The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American , young and old . It is
at least 100 years old . Where did the expression come from ?
The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper . He said
—in 1851—that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go
on stage . After they got their clue(暗示)to go on , they often said , “It’s time to
go to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did —face the orchestra which was
just below the stage .
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience
that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly , especially if he forgot his lines. But he
had to go out .
So, “to face the music” came to mean : having to go through something , no matter how
unpleasant the experience might be , because you knew you had no choice .
The other explanation comes from the army . Men had to face inspection(检阅)by their leader .
The soldiers worried about how well they looked . Was their equipment clean—shiny enough
to pass inspection ? Still , the men had to go out , and face the music of the band , as
well as the inspection . What else could they do ?
25.Th e phrase “to face the music” was first used by .
A.American actors B.the American writer James Fenimore Cooper
C.all the Americans D.the American orchestra
26.An actor might feel frightened or nervous when going on stage .One of the reasons is that .
A.his performance might not satisfy most of the audience
B.he might not remember what he should say on stage
C.he had to face the unfriendly audience
D.the audience might be mostly his friends
27.“To face the music” is also used to mean that soldiers were not willing .
A.to be examined about their equipment B.to be inspected by their leader
C.to show themselves by their leader D.to be found weak
28.This passage is mainly about .
A.how to go through di fficulty B.how to deal with something unpleasant
C.the origin of th e phrase D.the meaning of the phrase “to face the music”

One of my favorite things I like to watch is the bloopers(洋相) and outtakes(花絮) that are shown of mistakes made during the making of a movie. Most DVDs have a section of outtakes, and often they will set me off laughing, especially when you know what was supposed to happen. We all make mistakes, and have many bloopers and outtakes in a lifetime. Some of them may be funny like movie bloopers, a stupid mistake and we are able to laugh at ourselves. Other outtakes in life, however, are not funny. I am referring to the tragic turns of events that happen in life that can turn our life in a moment. Accidents, disaster, the death of a loved one happen unexpectedly, and can greatly affect our lives. These are outtakes we would prefer not to happen or even replayed in our life.
Times of crisis and tragedy can not be prevented, but how you handle these outtakes will affect the rest of your life. There is always a choice in any crisis. We can choose to feel upset, but keep hopes and move forward, or choose to become stuck in the past. We cannot choose our circumstances, but we do have a choice how we respond to them. We can give in or overcome, and our choice will determine our future. When we drive a car our focus is the road ahead; if we spend all our time looking in the rearview mirror(后视镜) failure is more or less inevitable(不可避免的)! The same is true in life. We will fail, or at best remain at a standstill if we keep looking back and focusing on t he events behind us, reliving the past.
29. The author mentions the outtakes of a movie in the first paragraph because .
A. he wants to direct us to his topic in a natural way
B. they are part of a movie
C. most people have the hobby of watching them
D. he just wants to tell us a story
30. The outtakes in our life are different from those of a movie because ___________.
A. they are more funny
B. they can be avoided
C. not all of them are funny
D. they happen more often
31. The purpose of the author is to tell us______________
A. the different kinds of outtakes in real life
B. his funny experience in watching a movie
C. what we should learn from the outtakes in real life
D. to choose the right attitude towards outtakes in life
32. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Outtakes! Give in or overcome?
B. Outtakes will destroy you.
C. There is always a choice in any crisis.
D. Keep hopes whatever happens.

36 When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.
The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 37
The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 38 It included such items as automobile sand new houses.
By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching”level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 39
One this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?
A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. 40 In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.
A.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.
B.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.
C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.
D.There are several le vels of wants in one’s life.
E.Then a third level appeared.
F.Human wants seem endless.
G.Different people have different wants on each level.
