How much rain has fallen on the earth in the past﹖Man has not always kept weather records.Because scientists need a way to learn about past rainfall, they study the tree rings.
A tree's trunk (树干) keeps growing year by year. Under its bark(树皮) , a tree adds a layer(分层)of new wood each year it lives. If you look at a tree stump (树根), you can see the layers. They are called annual rings (年轮).
On some trees, all of the rings are of the same width. But the ponderosa (美国黄松) that grow in the Arican southwest have rings in different width. The soil in the southwest is dry.The pines depend on rainfall for water. In a year of good rainfall, they form wide rings. In a dry year they form narrow ones.Scientists do not have to cut down a pine to study its rings. With a special tool, they remove a narrow piece of wood from the trunk without harming the tree. Then they look at the width of each ring to see how much rain fell in the year it formed.
Some pines are hundreds of years old and have hundreds of rings. These rings form an annual record of past rainfall in the southwest.

Part Four Writing
Section A. (10 marks)
Fill in each blank with no more than Three words .
Millions of people from all over the world use the Internet to communicate, get information and play games. However, using Internet can have both positive and negative effects on young people.
As for positive effects, children can use it for searching useful articles and materials. Also they can do their homework on computer instead of writing down.
The Internet gives children possibilities to learn about new things in life, and discover how people live all over the world. Children can communicate with their friends and relatives who live far away. In addition, they can make friends and talk with people in foreign countries.
However, there is much information that can be dagerous to children and damage their development. When children surf the internet, they can easily be tempted into something that is not proper. When kids start communicate with strangers online, they don’t know that they can be talking to a sick or a harmful
person and may meet the personn later. Another thing is that many children play only games rather than learn online. Too much sitting before the computer can be unhealthy and result in stress injuries, obesity and social isolation.
Parents have a big responsibility to guide and guard their children and set clear boundaries to what kids do. Parents can reduce the risks for their children by setting sensible rules and knowing what their children are interested in.
Title : Internet Effects On Young People
Section B (10 marks)
Directions:Read the following passage, Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
How we look and how we appear to others probably worry us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life. Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion.
Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment.
Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress.A barber today does not cut a boy’s hair in the same way as he used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did.The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull.
What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion. Take hats for example---In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more American men followed his example.
There is also a cyclical pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World War II, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter and the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again.
Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else. With no reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the “untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion of the top fashion houses.

Writing
Good morning, everyone,
I’m Li Yaozu from Xingguang Middle School. The topic of my speech is “Let’s Ride Bicycles”.
As is known to all, with the improvement of peopl e’s living standards, cars have become a popular means of transportation, bringing great convenience to our life. However, they have also caused some problems such as air pollution and traffic jams.
How can we solve the problem then? As far as I’m conce rned, riding bicycles is a good solution. For one thing, bicycles don’t need any petrol and they are energy-saving. For another, bicycles are environmentally friendly because they won’t give off waste gas. What’s more, riding bicycles is a good way to exercise and it is beneficial to our health.
Therefore, let’s take the responsibility to built up a low-carbon city by riding bicycles. Come on and join us.
That’s all! Thank you!。
