Capuchin monkeys usually make a lot of noise when they find food. They are letting their families know where the food is.
One day. a scientist named Dr. Marino Di Bitetti saw that a monkey kept quiet when it found food. The monkey d idn’t let the othe r monkeys know about the bananas. Dr. Di Bitetti wondered why. “It looked like she was trying to keep the bananas a secret from the other monkeys,” he said.
Some scientists used to think that animals couldn’t control the sounds coming fr om their mouths. This would mean that monkeys would make noise even if there was not enough food to share. Dr. Di Biictti had a different idea. Dr. Di Bitciti put some bananas on a platform (平台)in the trees where the monkeys lived. Sometimes he put a lot of bananas on the platform so that there would be enough for all of the monkeys to share. Sometimes he put only a few so that there would not be enough bananas for everyone.
Dr. Di Bitetti did this for a whole year. Each time Dr. Di Bitetti put bananas on the platform, he watched carefully.
He wanted to see if the monkeys sometimes kept quiet when they found bananas.
Dr. Di Biictti found three things that made monkeys remain silent. First, when monkeys found only a few bananas, they often didn’t tell the ir families. Second, in seasons when the forest provided only a little bit of food, monkeys kept quiet when they found bananas. Third, monkeys kept quiet when they had many friends nearby and would not have enough food for everyone.
Dr. Di Bitter’s banana, test showed that monkeys can control the sounds coming from their mouths. It seems that they know when to keep quiet and when to call their families.

The old man fished alone in a small boat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now bad luck, and ordered the boy to join another boat, which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man
come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to help him carry in the fishing lines or take down the old, patched sail.
“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they pulled up the boat to the sand. “I could go with you again. I’ve made some money.” the old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. “No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them. You must obey your father.” “We can be lucky again too. Remember when we didn’t catch a fish for 10 days, then caught a big one each day for a month?” said the boy. “Can I offer you a beer on the balcony and then we’ll take the things home,” said the boy. “Why not?” the old man said.
“Santiago,” the boy said as they sat on the balcony, “If I cannot fish with you, I would like to serve in some way.” “You bought me a beer,” the old man said, lifting the bottle to his mouth. “Do you remember the first time I took you out to fish?” the old man asked. “I was five. I remember the tail of a huge fish slapping against the boat, the noise of you clubbing him and the sweet blood smell. I remember everything from when we first went together,” the boy said. But he knew he had got it and he knew it was not disgraceful and it carried no loss of true pride. “Tomorrow is going to be a good day with this wind,” he said. “I will row far out before it is li ght. There is going to be a good day with this wind,” he said. “I will row far out before it is light. There will be a big fish?” asked the boy. “I think so. And I know many tricks.”

Hillary Clinton
“No matter the difficulties you face, work hard and never give up.” These words perfectly describe the life and career of one of the most successful women in the history of the United States, Hillary Clinton.
Hillary was born in 1947 and from an early age it was clear she was both diligent and very clever. She was accepted into one of America’s most famous universities, Yale, where she studied politics and law, something very unusual for a woman at that time. There, many of her male classmates and teachers looked down on her but they changed their minds when Hillary graduated near the top of her class. While studying at university she met and fell in love with a young man called Bill Clinton, whom she married in 1975. Twenty seven years later Bill would become the 42nd President of the United States.
Bill Clinton often said he valued Hillary’s advice more than anyone else’s and that she was in fact even cleverer than him. He put Hillary in charge of improving the hospital system in America, which made some of his opponents very angry.
In 2000, as Bill was leaving the Presidency, Hillary decided that if she wanted things to improve she would have to become a political leader herself. Once more, people doubted
her. They said she would never win but that year she became the first woman to be elected into the US Senate from New York. She had proved her critics wrong again. In 2008 she competed against Barak Obama to become the Democratic Party candidate for US President. Although she lost to Barak it was a very close contest and more than 18 million people supported her. No woman has ever some so close to before.
And who knows, maybe one day she will become President, because Hillary Clinton never gives up.

I wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that's impossible. For the most part Chinese people are friendly, easygoing and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the hardestworking people I have ever met.
In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends. I teach many students a year, talking to them freely.
The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US. The city of Xiang Fan I live in isn't large and I live better. Nonimported foods are very cheap, so are clothing and articles of everyday use. The cost of public transportation is very low, too. Chinese value education. However, it is reported that many children can't afford the expenses of schooling and are forced to leave school in some poor areas in China. But they organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion, Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education.
When we read news of China in the west, rarely, if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles have not reached many areas of China, but we also have the same problems.
When I am asked which country I consider better, China or the US, my answer has always been the same, “We are not worse or better than each other, we are only different.”
36. What does the author think of Chinese people?
