There are dozens of temple fairs in Beijing and the oldest and the most prestigious is the Changdian Temple Fair. Performances include martial arts, acrobatics, Peking Opera, pop music and folk dancing. Vendors from far away come to set up stalls and sell books, magazines, paintings, toys, tasty snacks, and dried and fresh fruit. There are also many colorful traditional Chinese crafts to buy, such as kites and painted masks taken from Peking Opera characters. Acrobats and other performers are on hand to keep the crowds entertained throughout the day.

Temple Fairs Foreigners who visit Beijing during the Spring Festival will be lucky to have the opportunity to attend some of the many temple fairs taking place at this time. “Temple fairs” began when groups of vendors and peddlers gathered to take advantage of potential customers when pilgrims came to pray for happiness, peace and good fortune at the temples, during traditional festivals. The practice grew, gradually turning into a regular event. Now temple fairs have little to do with religious activity and few of them are even held in temples. However, offering a wide variety of commercial and recreational activities, they are important and joyful venues for people during festivals, especially during the Spring Festival.

Nowadays, as people are exposed to more sophisticated forms of entertainment, the temple fair has also changed to cater to people’s changing interests. Apart from traditional temple fairs like the Changdian Temple Fair, where there are decorations and entertainment that are typically Chinese, there are also temple fairs with specific features. For example, the Shijingshan Temple Fair, which started in 2000, has a foreign influence. It is almost like a foreign carnival parade with exotic performances, ice and snow parties, and special programs for children.

A different type of fair is held at the Olympic Park, where instead of merely devouring snacks and watching ethnic performances as at a traditional temple fair, events are more interactive. People can practice yoga or try boxing or rock climbing under the instruction of coaches. Zhongguancun in Haidian District, known as Beijing’s Silicon Valley, hosts an annual Technology Temple Fair, featuring scientific demonstrations, interactive games and environment-friendly products. And temple fairs in southern China often feature flowers especially at Spring Festival. In the warm southern city of Guangzhou, Spring Festival is the time when numerous different flowers are in full bloom, so the temple fairs include many flower arrangements and decorations made from flowers.
