Charles Dickens (1812- 1870),the great nineteenth century English novelist, was born near Portsmouth.. His father ran heavily into debt and when he twelve, he had to go and work in a factory for making boot polish. The only formal education he received was a two-year schooling at a school for poor children. In fact, he had to teach himself all he knew. He worked for a time as junior clerk in a lawyer’s office. Afte r that, he worked as a reporter in the law courts, and later in parliament, for London newspapers. His career as a writer of fiction began in 1833 with short stories and essays in periodicals, and in 1837 his comic novel The Pickwick Papers made him the most popular author at his time in England.
He was a great observer of people and their places because he was attracted by life and conditions in mid-nineteenth century London. He wrote 19 novels all his life and in many of them, Dickens gave a realistic picture of all classes of England society, showing deep sympathy for the poor and unfortunate, exposing the injustice and inhumanity of the bourgeoisie.
Many of his novels like Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, Great Expectations, A tale of Two Cities and so on drew attention to the unsatisfactory social conditions that existed in England over a hundred years ago.
Dickens criticized capitalist society (资本主义社会)from the point of view of bourgeois humanism(资产阶级人文主义). He wished to see improvement in the living conditions of the poor, but failed to find any effective means to achieve that end.
26. Dickens only received a little formal education because ___________.
A. he wanted to teach himself.
B. he wanted to work and made a lot of money.
C. he was too poor to afford any more formal education.
D. he wanted some working experience to be a novelist.

B. poor
C. comfortable
D. unsatisfying
28.Which of the following novels made Dickens the most popular writer at his time in England?

B. The Pickwick Papers

A. He didn’t go to school at all
B. He only wrote about poor people and showed deep sympathy for them.
C. He began to write fictions when he was 21 years old.
D. He found some effective ways to improve the living conditions of the poor.

Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children’s curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions”about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we’re finished with your lists , do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”
This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying “That’s interesting” or “I’d never thought of it that way before” or coming up with more questions or ideas.
Never push a child to “Think”. It doesn’t make sense. Children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target for your disagreement.
Lastly, show; don’t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass(放大镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates(蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.
31. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to do is _______.
A. to let them see the world around
B. to share the children’s curiosity
C. to explain difficult phrases about science
D. to supply the children with lab equipment
32. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word “lists” could best be replaced by ______.
A. any questions
B. any problems
C. questions from textbooks
D. any number of questions
33. According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete and creative way if adults ________.
A. ask them to answer quickly
B. wait for one or two seconds after a question
C. tell them to answer the next day
D. wait at least for three seconds after a question
34. In which of the following paragraph(s) does the author tell us what to say to encourage children in a science discussion? ________.
A. The second and third.
B. The fourth and fifth.
C. The fifth and sixth.
D. The seventh.
35. The author menti ons all of the following techniques for adults to share with their children’s curiosity EXCEPT that adults should ________.
A. tell their children stories instead of reciting facts
B. offer their children chances to see things for themselves
C. be patient enough when their children answer questions
D. encourage their children to ask questions of their own

Did you know that women’s brains are smaller than men’s? The average women’s brain weighs 10% less than men’s.Since research has shown that the bigger the brain, the cleverer the animal, men must be more intelligent than women.Right? Wrong.Men and women always score similarly on intelligence tests, despite the difference in brain size. Why? After years of study, r esearchers have concluded that it’s what’s inside that matters, not just the size of the brain. The brain consists of “grey matter” and “white matter”.While men have more of the latter, the amount of “thinking” brain is almost exactly the same in both sexes.
It has been suggested that smaller brain appears to work faster, perhaps because the two sides of the brain are better connected in women. This means that little girls tend to learn to speak earlier, and that women can understand sorts of information from different sources at the same time. When it comes to talking to the boss on the phone, cooking dinner and keeping an eye on the baby all at the same time, it’s women who come out on top every time.
There are other important differences between two sexes. As white matter is the key to spatial tasks, men know better where things are in relation to other things.“A great footballer always knows where he is in relation to the other players, and he knows where to go,” says one researcher. That may explain one of li fe’s great mysteries: why men refuse to ask for direction and women often need to!
The differences begin when fetuses(胎儿)are about nine weeks old, which can be seen in the action of children as young as one.A boy would try to climb a barrier before him or push it down while a girl would attract help from others. These brain differences also explain the fact that more men take up jobs that require good spatial skills, while more women speech skills. It may all go back to our ancestors, among whom women needed speech skills to take care of their babies
and men needed spatial skills to hunt, according to one research.
If all this disappoints you, it shouldn’t.“The brain changes throughout our lives according to what we do with it.” says a biologist.
36.The passage mainly tells us ________.
A.the difference between men’s and women’s brains B.the changes in brain throughout our lives
C.that men are better at spatial tasks D.that brain differences are related to our ancestors
37.Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph? ________.
A.Women’s brain is 10% less than men’s B.Grey matter plays the same role as white matter.
C.Grey matter controls thinking in the brain.D.Both sexes have the same amount of white matter.
38.What can we infer from the second and third paragraphs? ________.
A.Women prefer doing many things at a time.B.Men do better dealing with one job at a time.
C.Women do not need to tell directions. D.Men have weaker spatial abilities.39.Which of the following do you agree with according to the fourth paragraph? ________.A.Young boys may be stronger than young girls.B.More women take up jobs requiring speech skills
C.Women may have stronger feelings than men.D.Our ancestors needed more spatial skills.40.Wh at is the writer’s attitude in writing this passage? ________.A.Defensive.B.Persuasive.C.Supportive.D.Objective.

Jim suffered heart problems. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was drawing to a close.
When his heart problems led to operation, Jim went through it successfully, and a full recovery was expected. Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly. Jim was rushed back to operation, but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before his 48th birthday.
Dr. Bruce Smoller, a psychologist, had had many conversations with him, and the more he learned, the stranger he realized Jim's case was. When Jim was a child, his father, a teacher, suffered a heart attack and stayed home to recover. One morning Jim asked his father to look over his homework, promising to come home from school at noon to pick it up. His father agreed, but when Jim returned his father had died. Jim's father was 48.
“I think all his life Jim believed he killed his father,” Dr. Smoller says. “He felt that if he had not asked him to look at his homework, his father would have lived. Jim had been troubled by the idea. The operation was the trial he had expected for forty years. “Smoll er believes that Jim willed himself not to live to the age of 48.
Jim's case shows the powerful role that attitude plays in physical health, and that childhood experiences produce far-reaching effect on the health of grown-ups. Although most cases are less direct than Jim's, studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart disease and mental illness.

A. Jim died at a young age.
B. Jim died on the operating table.
C. Both Jim and his father died of the same disease.
D. Jim's death is closely connected with his father's.
43. From Smoller's words, we can infer that ________.
A. Jim's father cared little about his study
B. Smoller agreed that Jim did kill his father
C. Jim thought he would be punished some day
D. Smoller believed Jim wouldn't live to the age of 48
44. Which of the following could have strong effect on one's physical health according to the text?
a. One’s genes.
b. One’s life in childhood.
c. One’s physical e ducation.
d. The date of one’s birthday.
e. The opinions one has about something.
A. a, b, d
B. a, b, e
C. a, c, e
D. b, c, d
45. Which of the following is true?
A. Both Jim and his father died at the age of 48.
B. Jim often asked his father to do his homework.

基础写作:How to protect our eyesight
Now in our school more and more students have got short-sighted, with up to 70% of senior Three students wearing glasses, which is becoming a serious problem. As far as I am concerned, one of the main cause is that we students are much hardworking than before, bearing greater pressure particularly from too much homework. Long time of concentration on our study without enough time to refresh our eyesight is another cause. Much anxiety and lack of sleep also contribute to this result . So measures should be taken to improve our eyesight, such as taking an active part in exercise, doing exercises regularly, forming a good habit of sleep and so on.
任务型写作:
Born disabled, Susan was laughed at and denied at school. However, it is such a tough experience that steeled herself, and by practicing singing on different occasions she won world fame due to her powerful voice.
The story of Susan touched me very much. Susan told us not to judge a person from his/her appearance again. No one is born wise and there is no smooth way to success. Only by hard work and perseverance can we achieve our life goal.
A similar experience also occurs to my friend, who had a nickname: wood head. He was always laughed at because he was clumsy in everything he did. So you can imagine how disappointed his parents were when the result of examination came out. Yet, with strong belief, he is consistent in his positive attitude toward life. After he became a senior middle school student, he worked even harder to catch up with others. To him, failure is a motive force to inspire him to go further . Eventually, He was admitted to a famous university of Guangdong last year.
So, we know one’s disadvantage can be driving force in seeking success. It all depends on ourselves. In a word, we should learn the spirit of perseverance from Susan and my friend to achieve our dreams.。
