The Legend of Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuanxiao Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. It marks the end of the Spring Festival celebrations and is widely regarded as one of the main highlights of the Chinese New Year. With a history of over 2,000 years, the Lantern Festival is filled with fascinating legends and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.
The Origins of the Lantern Festival
The origins of the Lantern Festival can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). It is believed to have started as a simple ritual of lighting lanterns to worship the gods, pray for good fortune, and bring light during the long winter nights. However, over time, the festival evolved and became more elaborate, incorporating various customs and traditions.
The Legend of Yuanxiao
One of the most well-known legends associated with the Lantern Festival is the legend of Yuanxiao. According to the legend, there was a beautiful fairy named Chang’e who lived on the moon. She was married to Houyi, an excellent archer known for his skills. One day, Houyi accidentally shot down nine of the ten suns that were scorching the earth. His heroic act earned him admiration from the people.
Howeve r, Houyi’s fame attracted jealousy from a wicked and treacherous man called Peng Meng. Peng Meng wanted to kill Houyi, but he knew that he was no match for him. So, he devised a plan to take revenge on Houyi by targeting his wife, Chang’e.
One day, while Houyi was out hunting, Peng Meng sneaked into their home and demanded Chang’e to give him the elixir of immortality that Houyi had received as a reward for shooting down the suns. Knowing that she couldn’t defeat Peng Meng, Chang’e made a quick decision. In stead of handing over the elixir, she swallowed it herself.
After drinking the elixir, Chang’e started to float in the air, and as she soared higher and higher, she eventually landed on the moon. To honor her memory, Houyi started the tradition of lighting lanterns and offering sacrifices on the fifteenth day of the lunar month, when the moon is at its brightest and roundest.
Customs and Celebrations
The Lantern Festival is celebrated with various customs and traditions. The most prominent custom is the lighting of lanterns, which come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Lanterns are often decorated with intricate designs and symbols,
representing good luck and prosperity. In recent years, lantern riddle guessing has become a popular activity during the festival. Riddles are written on lanterns, and people have to guess the answers. If they solve the riddle correctly, they can win small prizes.
Another popular custom is the eating of yuanxiao, a type of sweet dumpling made of glutinous rice flour, filled with a variety of delicious fillings such as sesame paste, sweet bean paste, and even meat. Yuanxiao got its name from the legend of Chang’e. It is believed that by eating yuanxiao, people are symbolically taking in Chang’e’s spirit and are blessed with good luc k and happiness.
During the Lantern Festival, many cities in China hold lantern fairs, where intricate and artistic lantern displays are exhibited. These lantern displays often depict famous landmarks, mythical creatures, and traditional Chinese symbols. The lantern fairs also feature performances, such as dragon and lion dances, traditional musical instruments, and acrobatic shows, adding to the festive spirit.
Conclusion
The Lantern Festival is not only a celebration of the end of Chinese New Year but also a time to honor the legends and stories that have been passed down through generations. With its mesmerizing lantern displays, mouthwatering food, and lively customs, the Lantern Festival brings people together to enjoy the festivities and create cherished memories.
