Now, UNICEF helps children all over the world. It works in over 190 countries and areas. It helps governments and families make the world a better place for children.UNICEF gets its money from donations. It raises money by selling holiday cards and organizing other fund-raising activities. People can help UNICEF by doing voluntary work.UNICEF believes that all children should have clean water and food so that they can be healthy. It also believes that they should go to school instead of working to support their families.3Dinosaurs lived on the Earth a long time ago. We now know that the first dinosaurs appeared about 245 million years ago. There were hundreds of different kinds of dinosaurs, but they didn’t live at the same time. Some dinosaurs were really small. One of the smallest dinosaurs was about one metre long and weighed about three kilograms. Others were really big. Some very large ones weighed over 100000 kilograms and some were about 40 metres long. Some dinosaurs ate plants and others ate meat. Dinosaurs walked on either two or four legs and lived on land.4My ideal school starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 3 p.m. I love sports and computers, so we have PE and computer lessons every day. The classes are quite small. There are about 20 students in each class. There is a big dining hall. There we can eat and chat with our friends. There is a park on one side of our school and a shopping mall on the other. We have a big library. We also have a tennis court and a swimming pool. There are lots of clubs and after-school activities. Every month, we go on a school trip to a museum or a theatre.5Zhalong Nature Reserve is in north-east China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and cover for a lot of wildlife. It is a perfect place for some rare birds. Some people want to make the wetlands smaller in order to have more space for farms and buildings. This will lead to less and less space for wildlife. Now the Chinese government has made laws to protect Zhalong.Wetlands are important because they provide food and shelter for wildlife including some endangered birds, and they also help prevent floods. We must protect the home of plants, fish and birds.6Winter is my favourite season. It is very cold and everyone has to wear thick warm clothes, but I always enjoy the winter here in Harbin. The temperature is usually below zero and it is often snowy. Everything is covered in deep white snow, and the lakes and rivers are frozen. During this season, you cannot see beautiful flowers or green trees, but the land is quiet and beautiful. My friends and I love playing outside in winter. It is exciting to have big snowball fights. We also make snowmen and use carrots for their noses. They look funny.Winter is great!7My favourite festival is the Chinese New Year. People usually clean their houses before the festival. All the family members come back home from faraway places, because it’s time to get together. They have a big and delicious dinner on the Chinese New Year’s Eve. Then they watch TV till midnight. When the clock strikes 12, people say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one in different ways. On the morning of the Chinese New Year’s Day, people wear new clothes and visit their friends and relatives. Most of them prefer red because they think red can bring good luck.8My name is Lucy. I am in Year 9 at Woodland School near London. It is a mixed school. Boys and girls have lessons together. My favourite subject is French. Learning foreign languages is fun.Our school has a Reading Week every year. During the week, we can borrow more books from the school library. We can also bring in books and magazines from home. I often read more books than my classmates. Near the end of the week, we discuss the books with our classmates in class. Time seems to go faster when we are reading interesting books.9I have to choose a new colour for my bedroom. It’s a very important decision, because colour can change a person’s mood. I like orange, because it’s a happy, warm colour. It can make people feel comfortable. My best friend Jack doesn’t agree though. He thinks green is better. Jack says that green represents nature and that it can make you feel energetic. I remind Jack that green is also the colour of envy. My mother recommends blue. She thinks blue is a calm and peaceful colour, so it will make me less stressed and help me relax after school. Perhaps she is right.10Our good friend Jason is leaving Beijing tomorrow. Jason is an exchange student who studied at our school for six months.Jason is smart. He is good at Maths, and he often helped us with our homework. He likes our school because we have more after-school activities and more clubs.Everyone likes Jason because he is always kind and generous. He is willing to share things with others. Jason also has a great sense of humour. We will never forget his jokes. Now Jason has to go back to his family and friends in New York. We will all miss him very much. We wish him good luck.11Mum’s birthday is coming next Saturday, so I decided to make her a birthday card by myself.I went to Sandy’s home to make the card because I wanted to keep it secret. I planned to make the card with some roses on it. Sandy helped me with the drawing. We had fun working together. It took me two hours to finish. I coloured the roses red, blue and pink. I also cut out a picture of colourful balloons and stuck it on the cover. This is the first card I made for Mum. I hope she will like it.12All around the world, people drink tea, but tea does not mean the same thing to everyone. In different countries people have very different ideas about drinking tea.In China people like to have tea together with their friends. They drink tea at any time of the day. They put only tea leaves in their cups. They prefer tea with nothing in it.Tea is also popular in Japan. People have tea every day, but the way they drink it is different from that in China. In the USA people drink tea at breakfast or after meals. They usually use teabags to make their tea.13Many young people are now giving up their spare time to become volunteers. It is a very meaningful activity because volunteering helps and gives support to different groups in society.Young people can choose to volunteer in many different charities. For example, I do voluntary work for two charities: the first one gives help and support to homeless people, and the second one takes care of the disabled people.Another choice is to take part in special projects or events to raise money for charity. Some people take part in charity walks, or they donate money to charities. You can even organize one of these events yourself.14Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in 1980. There is always more than enough food there. The cinema has a large TV. I would like to invite my friends to watch films with me at the weekend. On the first floor, there are six bedrooms. Each room has a new computer and all the beds are comfortable. There are two large rooms on the second floor. My friends and I have parties there. It is great fun!17We are going to hold a talk on good table manners this afternoon. The purpose is to teach students rules for eating. There will be a lot of rules of table manners. Above all, when you are sitting at the table, you should not start eating until everyone is ready, and it is impolite to make too much noise while you are eating or drinking. You should not eat with your mouth open or talk with food in your mouth. Before you leave the table, wait for everyone to finish. These rules are important because we should make sure that both guests and hosts are comfortable at the table.18Pollution is one of the biggest problems in the world today. In many places, rubbish is thrown into lakes and rivers, so many of them are polluted. In some cities, the air is filled with pollution. We need to take action to protect the environment.Switzerland is beautiful with high mountains and clean blue lakes. In Switzerland, things like glass, plastic and paper are separated into different groups and then recycled. Even old clothes and shoes can be recycled. The government has many laws to protect the environment. For example, people are not allowed to cut down trees. Otherwise, they will be punished.Remember that everyone can do something to make a difference.19This year’s Beijing Music Awards will be covered live this Saturday. Many Asian pop stars will attend. It is the largest city in Australia. On the website, we saw lots of pictures of Sydney. Sydney is near the sea. There are many beautiful beaches there. We also saw a wonderful building called the Sydney Opera House. It is a theatre and looks like a ship with many sails. Near the Sydney Opera House is the famous Harbour Bridge. People can climb it. It takes about three hours. It is really cool!Australian seasons are the opposite of ours. For example, in April, it is autumn in Australia!25Our environment is changing for the worse, so it is time for us to go green. Here are some simple steps to take.We can save water by taking shorter showers and turning off the tap when we brush our teeth. In order to save power, we should turn off the lights when we leave a room. Some other good habits can help reduce pollution. We should not use plastic bags when shopping. Recycling is also a good way to help reduce pollution. We should separate waste into different groups so that it can be recycled.Follow these small steps, and you can make a big difference to the Earth!26Recently we did a survey in our class in order to learn about students’ ideal jobs. Here’s a report about my group members’ ideas.Mary wants to be a teacher when she grows up. She is very patient and enjoys working with children. I practise dancing every day.Hopefully, everyone can realize their dreams in the future.27Tan Dun is one of the greatest artists in the world today. When he was very young, Tan showed an interest in music. To him, the best music comes from nature. As he likes the sounds of nature, Tan uses them a lot in his music. For example, in one of his works, Water, he doesn’t use any musical instruments. He makes over 50 sounds from water by controlling the speed of water flow. That’s really amazing!Tan has successfully brought Chinese and Western music together. He has helped build a bridge between the East and the West. In his words, “My music is to dream without boundaries.”28Dear Mum,I am going on a business trip to Shenzhen tomorrow. I could not buy expensive things, but I had my eyes. I used to go outside every night to look at the stars. There are billions of stars in the sky—but you can only see about 3,000 with your own eyes.Get a map of the stars and begin to find your way through the sky. In different seasons, you can see different groups of stars. The shapes of these groups never change. It is easy to learn the name of each group. When you know these, you may start to look at the stars inside each group. Not all stars are the same. Some are big, and some are small. Some look white, some look red and some look blue.Sometimes, you may see a star move. However, if you see it move from one group to another, then it is not a star but a planet. You are able to see Venus and Jupiter easily. They are both very bright. It is easy to see Mars, too. It looks red. You will soon begin to learn more and more about the stars. Then you will want to find out even more about them.A photographer can have a very interesting life. Norman Parkinson was a famous English photographer. He liked traveling to interesting places and taking photographs. It was his hobby as well as his job.Taking photographs is a favourite hobby of many people all over the world. It can help us remember things. We all love to take photographs of each other, especially when we travel to new places. We also like to have a photograph of everybody in the group together. When we want to be in the picture, we need to ask someone to take the photograph for us.Having photographs is important because people and places always change. It is very sad, for example, if children cannot look at photographs of their parents or grandparents. What did Grandfather look like? Where did he use to live? If we do not have photographs, children may not know the answers to these questions. Photographs help us know and understand our history. This picture is more than fifty years old. G uangzhou later held the Chinese Export Commodities Fair in this building. DO you think the old picture helps us remember life in the past?(5)TravelWinter is behind us and people are starting to plan their summer holidays. This year, why not visit France?France is a big country, with coasts on three sides. You can swim at its good beaches. It also has many mountains, so you can go skiing. In central France, they grow crops such as sunflowers. One of the most scenic areas of central France is the Loire Valley. Kings and queens used to live in the old castles there.Paris, the capital of France, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe are world-famous.People with children will find EruoDisney a good place to visit. It is just an hour from the center of Paris, and it is like Disneyland in the USA. France is famous for its fine food such as bread and wine. These days, you can see many French foods in large cities in China.France is also famous for its art and culture. In France, you can enjoy film festivals and concerts. They will help you better understand France and the French people. Why not go and enjoy yourself in the wonderful country of France?(6)People work with different parts of their bodies. A construction worker mostly uses his hands. An athlete mostly uses his or her arms and legs. Teachers use their brains for thinking, their mouths for speaking, their eyes for reading and their ears for listening. But how many people use their noses for their jobs? In fact, quite a few!A perfume maker must have a good sense of smell. A good sense of smell is also useful for working with any kind of food. A cook working in a restaurant uses his or her nose all day. He or she must have a good sense of taste as well.Firemen need to have a good sense of smell. The best firemen can smell smoke very quickly and because of this, a fireman with a good sense of smell will always be safer than one without.Close your eyes. What can you smell? Can you tell lots of different things? Yes? Then maybe you should look for a job using your nose.I have had a great time traveling the world, and have learnt a lot about the eating habits of people in different countries. In China, for example, people use chopsticks to eat with. They have eaten this way for thousands of years, but I found chopsticks very difficult to use. Chinese cooks usually cut the food into small pieces, and put each dish on a different plate. At dinner, everyone sits at a round table. The hostess puts the dishes of food in the middle of the table, and everyone helps themselves with chopsticks or spoons. In Shanghai, I saw people eat chicken’s feet and smelly tofu. I have not seen this kind of food in the UK.In Japan, people also use chopsticks, but each person has a separate tray of food. Each tray has several small dishes and bowls of food on it. The people at a table usually do not get food from plates in the middle of the table. The most famous Japanese food is sashimi - raw fish. I found it very delicious. In the UK, people usually use a knife and fork. For a family dinner, the mother or father will put the food in the middle of the table. Everyone passes the food around. As they pass the food, they take some and put it on their plates. They often eat food like roast beef and potatoes. The father will cut off a large piece of roast beef and put it on each person’s plate. They use their knife to cut the food, and their fork to eat it.(8)Tea is one of the most important and popular drinks in China. There are many different kinds of tea. People always say, “We have 10,000 different kinds of tea.” But mostly, we have green tea, black tea, oolong tea and white tea. There are also many different kinds of flower tea. Most people know the story about Dragon Well green tea. This tea comes from the Chinese village of Dragon Well, not far from Hangzhou. Nearly 2000 years ago, the village had many months with no rain. All of the crops were dying, and the farmers were very worried. Then a man found a dragon in a well. He asked the dragon to get out of the well. As soon as the dragon came out, it began to rain and the crops were saved. People now call the tea from that area, “Dragon Well tea”.People in the UK, the USA and Australia drink tea too, but most people there like tea with a little sugar.According to doctors, green tea is very good for you. You should drink some every day. Do you?(9)How do we give a computer instructions? We give a computer instructions by putting different programs into it. “Computer programmers”write computer programs. It is essential for these people not to make mistakes. Otherwise, the computer will not work well.A computer needs different programs to do different jobs. For example, playing games, writing letters and drawing pictures all need different programs. There are also different languages for different programs. To write a program, people need to know this language. Sometimes a computer programmer may know many different languages. However, computer languages are not spoken languages like Chinese or English but written languages. Also, only the computer and the programmer can understand them!CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMsMany computers have CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives. A CD-ROM can hold over 300,000 pages of writing, and may also contain pictures and sounds. A DVD-ROM can hold even more information. So, you can use them on your computer to read about the most famous people in the world today. You can also see photographs or videos of people, and even listen to them speaking. According to some people,The Young Green Consumer Guide says that our world is in danger. We must do something to save Earth. There are many environmental problems. What are they? The greenhouse effectThe writer asks us to imagine Earth inside a kind of greenhouse. The atmosphere around Earth acts like the glass. It lets sunlight in and keeps much of the warmth from getting out. It is important to us all. "Without it, Earth would be as cold and lifeless as the surface of the moon.""The trouble is that our atmosphere is changing because we are polluting it with chemicals--in the form of gases—and it is keeping in too much heat!" This will cause the level of seas to rise and drown cities and even whole countries. The act of destroying rainforestsThe burning and cutting down of trees is making the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in harmful gases. It will also cause floods because trees can help hold soil together, and soil absorbs water when it rains.Bad habitsMany of our habits cause pollution, especially our habit of using things once and then throwing them away. This creates mountains of rubbish and it pollutes our land and seas. For example, people throw away as many as seven billion drink cans in the UK every year. That is enough to reach from Earth to the moon. How can we save Earth? In order to save our world, the book is asking us to become "green consumers". That is, we should only buy and use "environmentally friendly" things. These things will not damage the environment.(11)Lang Lang is one of the youngest and most famous pianists of our time. The New York Times said “He is stunning”. However, Lang Lang’s story is much more interesting than this simple sentence.Lang Lang was born in 1982 in Shenyang, China. He was watching a Tom and Jerry cartoon on television when he first heard Western classical music. He was only two years old then. Lang Lang began taking piano lessons at the age of three. He won first prize in the Shenyang Piano competition only two years later. From then on, he won many awards. How ever, Lang Lang’s success came at a price. His father was very strict with him. He was practising the piano while other children his age were playing games and having fun. When Lang Lang was nine, his father gave up his work and took Lang Lang to Beijing. There, Lang Lang entered the finest music school in China. At the age of just 17, Lang Lang got his big chance. In August 1999, at a famous musical event in the USA, a pianist suddenly fell ill. Lang Lang was chosen to play in place of that pianist. His performance was a great success and his life was changed forever. Today, Lang Lang gives about 150 performances a year. He has played with the greatest orchestras in the world such as the London Symphony Orchestra and at huge events such as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Lang Lang says he is grateful to his parents since they have always encouraged and supported him.(12)Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, the USA on 17 January 1706. He was a man of many talents and interests. He was a scientist and an inventor. He was naturally curious about how things worked and was always searching for ways to improve them.experiments led to a number of very important findings, but Benjamin did not actually invent electricity. However, he did invent the lightning conductor. It protects buildings and ships from damage caused by lightning.Benjamin had poor sight and needed to wear glasses. He was tired of always taking them on and off, so he invented a new pair of glasses. These glasses let him see both near and far things at the same time. Nowadays, these glasses are known as bifocals. During his lifetime, Benjamin travelled across the Atlantic Ocean eight times. These long journeys gave him a lot of time to learn about how ships worked. He also developed a way to make them safer and more efficient. He made other developments in public services too. These included setting up the first fire company in Philadelphia and improving the pavement and lights on the city’s streets.(13)Would you like to become a cartoon artist? If yes, a good way to start is by drawing cartoon faces. Cartoon faces should be funny and interesting. We can make people’s faces look funny by exaggerating some of their features. For example, this lady has round cheeks, small eyes, a smiling mouth and black hair. She also wears big glasses with thin, brown frames. Now, let’s draw a cartoon face of this lady. Which part of her face shall we make bigger or smaller? Let’s try her glasses. First, we draw an outline of the shape of her face and add a nose. Then we can draw bigger glasses with thick frames. Second, let’s add smaller eyes, and a bigger smile. Finally, add rounder cheeks, black eyebrows and hair. Colour the face with brighter colours. Don’t forget the glasses. How about making them bright pink? They will look more brilliant.Draw the outline of the shape of her face, her nose and glasses.Draw her eyes and mouth.Draw her cheeks, eyebrows and hair. Colour the face and the glasses. We can see that by adding bigger glasses, smaller eyes, rounder face and brighter colours the cartoon face looks humorous. Now, all we have to do is to think of a name for her!(14)Your brain weighs about 1.4 kg. Inside your brain are billions of cells. Each cell is a thousand times more powerful than a computer! The active part of your brain is called the grey matter. This part stores information and gives instructions to the rest of your body. Most scientists believe that we only use about 1 per cent of our grey matter. Certain areas of our brain are not active. The non-active part is called the white matter. It passes messages within the nervous system. Scientists think that some parts of our brains can grow stronger if we use them a lot. For example, they found that parts of a taxi driver’s brain got stronger because he had to memorize all the streets in a city! However, if we do not use our memory regularly, our brains can also get weaker. We need to exercise our brains just like we need to exercise our bodies! Our brains are very tough, so we rarely lose our memory completely. We may forget what happened after a car accident, but our memories usually come back later. Normally we never forget who we are or what our names are.Did you know that we can remember tastes and smells better than we can remember words or pictures? It is true. Certain smells can help us remember things from the past. This is because the “smells” part of our brain is close to the “memory” part.(15)Throughout the history of mankind, people have communicated with body language. Although you probably don’t realize you are doing it, you use your hands and the rest of your body every time you talk to someone. In many situations, what you say with your eyes is more important than what comes out of your mouth.Eye contact is one of the most important forms of body language. It can be the key to successful communication. It can show whether a person is friendly or unfriendly, interested or bored, clear or confused. However, eye contact can mean different things in different cultures. In Western cultures, making eye contact in conversations is necessary. As a matter of fact, a Westerner might consider a lack of eye contact as a lack of interest. In countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece, people like standing close to each other to talk, so eye contact is frequent. In many Asian cultures, avoiding eye contact shows respect. People do this when they talk with anyone in authority or with elders.Habits like this can cause difficulties when people do not understand them. For example, an Asian person might close his or her eyes in concentration or look down while listening to a speaker. A Western speaker might think the listener is not interested.Eye contact needs careful thought. Avoiding eye contact might be considered impolite, but staring at others is also considered rude and should be avoided.(16)Some people have a lot of hair, while others have thin hair or are bald on top of their heads. However, hair problems can affect anyone if they have an unhealthy diet or lifestyle. Are you happy with the hair you have? If you are not, try the following advice. The first step to a healthier head of hair is to make sure you are eating the right kinds of food. Lack of protein and iron can secretly rob your hair of its shiny beauty. You need to eat enough green vegetables and fruit. Drinking plenty of water is also important to help prevent your hair from getting dry. Doctors suggest you drink eight to ten glasses each day.The stress of life can also damage your hair. Young people have many things to worry about, like doing difficult homework or preparing for important exams. It is important for you to reduce the pressure you are feeling. Listening to music and getting more rest can help. You also need to think about the way you treat your hair. Too much perming and colouring can be harmful. Also, always be gentle with your hair. Do not rub it too quickly when you dry it. That could easily damage your hair. Remember that using hairdryers too much can hurt your hair too. Finally, be sure to choose the right hair products for you.(17)Today, weight problems, heart trouble and many forms of cancer are becoming more common because of unhealthy diets. Everywhere, people are thinking about how they can eat more healthily. There are many different answers to this question. Some people think that sugar is bad for your health. Others say that sugar is the best source of energy. Some people eat meat while others are vegetarians. It is difficult to say who is right. Most doctors agree on one thing, however: you need a balanced diet to stay healthy. A balanced diet means eating various foods from each of the five food groups: grains, vegetables, fruit, milk products, and meat. The importance of having various foods in your diet is quite clear. Doctors warn us that a lack of certain kinds of foods is dangerous. Your body cannot work properly without a balanced diet.Doctors say, for example, if people eat lots of food such as cheeseburgers and butter, they are likely to become fat. This may increase the risk of a hart attack. Therefore, to help you decide what to eat and what not to eat, you should do some research. Scientific information about your body’s needs for fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins can help you decide on the right things to eat and the right amount to eat. It can also help you understand your body better. If you learn how to balance your diet properly, you will have a healthier future.(18)James is in Grade 9 at a secondary school in Guangzhou. He is a gifted student and he has lots of friends, but he also has a problem. Some older boys are bullying him. James is very upset about this problem and he doesn’t know what to do about it. I want to offer some guidance to James, and any other teenagers in this situation. Most important, don’t feel ashamed if you get bullied. It is not your fault! Being bullied can make you feel very lonely and angry, but you are not alone. Don’t feel that you h ave to hide the problem. Find a person you can trust, and tell them. It might be your teacher, your parents, or even your friend’s parents. After you tell someone, you will get some support and feel some relief.Speaking to an adult might make you nervous, but there are other things you can do. Some people express their feelings more easily on paper. Write a letter to someone or keep a diary. Include all the details about what the bullies do, as well as when and where the bullying happens. You can use it as evidence to prove what is going on. Show your letter or diary to a teacher or another responsible adult. The bullies will feel very afraid if their names appear in a letter! Also, don’t show you are upset and don’t try and fight with the bullies. You could get in trouble yourself. Ignore them and walk away. The bullies will soon stop.(19)Theatre is popular around the world. British theatre is especially well known because of William Shakespeare and his plays. Although Shakespeare created famous plays such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet over 400 years ago, they are still loved today. In Shakespeare’s time, however, theatre performances were very different to modern ones.Traditional theatres in the UK were round and had a stage in the middle. There was no roof above the stage, so when it rained everyone got very wet. Strangely, all the actors were male. Even the female characters were played by men! If the audience liked the play, they threw money onto the stage. If they didn’t enjoy it, they threw smelly old vegetables. Some countries have far more ancient theatre traditions than Britain. For example, Chinese theatre is more than 1,000 years old. Puppet shows were a very popular kind of theatre during the Tang Dynasty. Musical performances were also widespread, and often included dramatic stories, singing and dancing. Beijing Opera is a world-famous example of traditional Chinese theatre. In today’s world, plays and musicals are performed in huge buildings and often have modern costumes and fantastic special effects. However, some old theatre traditions still remain. For example, never say “good luck” to an actor in Britain. They think it brings bad luck. You should say “break a leg” instead. Also, it is still common to throw things on to the stage after a performance in a British theatre, but it is more usual for people to throw flowers instead of money or vegetables today.(20)Nature is filled with amazing plants. Some can survive in the middle of the desert. Others can grow upIn Holland, the most famous flower is found in the pages of a book!In 1850 the writer Alexandre Dumas wrote a novel called The Black Tulip. In the story, a young man called Cornelius tried to create a “black”tulip that would help him win a gardening competition. However, just before he succeeded he was put in prison unfairly. He felt sad, and was ready to give up his dream. But then he met Rosa, the beautiful daughter of the prison guard. They fell in love and together found a special way to cultivate the “black” tulip. Cornelius finally claimed victory in the competition. The book was extremely successful and sold faster than any of Dumas’s other works. People all over Europe wanted to grow a real black tulip like the one in the tale. But in nature most flowers have bright colours. People have cultivated flowers that look black, giving them names like Black Parrot or Black Diamond. In reality, though, these “black” tulips are actually a very dark purple colour. Most scientists think a truly black flower does not really exist. However, flower lovers have tried their best to make this romantic dream come true. Do you think one day someone will succeed?(21)Shopping is popular with many people around the world. They seem to find new ways to buy things every day. They visit shopping malls, order things through the mail, or buy things on the Internet. People’s shopping habits are always changing! For young people, one of the most popular ways to shop is to use a vending machine. These machines offer all kinds of things and you can find them everywhere. In the USA, there are vending machines which sell CDs. New CDs are put in the machine every week. The strangest product on sale from a vending machine is in Japan. Just put your coins in the vending machine in Tokyo, press the button, and out comes a “kabutomushi”, that is, a black beetle. You keep it as a pet!Japan now has a “Roboshop”—a shop with no shop assistants, only robots. It is very convenient! A robot reads your credit card and then gives you what you want. And some robots can even talk. People are amazed that the robots can serve them as well as shop assistants do.Some shops in the UK are like social clubs for teenagers. Many of them have a cafe inside. The Youth Station has a large nightclub for teenagers under 18, with a DJ playing music in a room that hangs from the ceiling. Sports Town has a big screen, where you can see live sports from around the world. You will not miss any important football matches, even when you go shopping.(22)My favourite sport is basketball. The game was invented in the winter of 1891 in America by Dr James Naismith. He nailed two peach baskets to the wall. His students used a heavy soccer ball to play the game. It immediately attracted attention and quickly grew popular. Over the years, there have been many rule changes. Teams had nine players at first. In the 1920s there was a cage around the court, so the ball could not go out of play. The game was more violent then, and players often hurt themselves.Today the NBA in the United States is the top basketball league in the world. It features the sport’s most famous names. The speed, power and excitement of the matches attract millions of fans all over the planet. My favourite team is the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls won three NBA titles in the 1990s. I never miss them when they are on TV, because they are very exciting to watch. I have posters of the team in my bedroom, and I always wear the latest Bulls kit.Watching the games can also help me learn English. I have learnt the names of many moves inand throws the ball down into the basket.Basketball is the number one sport at school. Many students try to copy the moves of NBA stars like Shaq O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. Our school basketball coach says this can lead to bad habits. He thinks we should learn how to play as a team first. I think he is right. Even though we all want to be a big star, the most important part of basketball is teamwork.(23)The ancient Olympic Games began in Greece over 2000 years ago. The first athletes were all men, and they competed in many events, such as jumping, throwing and boxing. They were loved as great heroes. The most important event was the marathon. The winner was always remembered in poems. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Only a few countries took part. However, the Games were very popular because they were exciting and they encouraged important values like healthy competition and fair play. The Olympics soon grew into a huge international event. Many new sports have been added to the Games and today thousands of athletes take part. The Olympic Games changed greatly in the twentieth century. The early Olympics were only held in the summer, but people from colder countries wanted to compete in the sports they were good at. The Winter Olympics were therefore introduced, where athletes could compete in events like skiing and skating. Also, the early Olympic Games did not allow disabled people any chance to compete, so in 1960 the Paralympics began. In the Paralympics athletes with physical problems can show their abilities to the world. The Olympic Games bring the whole planet together. Olympic athletes believe strongly in the Olympic motto: Faster, Higher, Stronger. They constantly challenge themselves to do better than those before them. This spirit of friendly competition has made a great contribution to the modern world.(24)School uniforms are not very common in the USA. In 1987, Cherry Hill Primary School in Maryland went against tradition. It became the first state school in the USA to make students wear uniforms. The school did this to reduce the trouble caused by student fashions. This programme has helped to improve safety and discipline. Other schools are hopeful that Cherry Hill’s approach will benefit their students too. By 2000, 12 per cent of American state schools required school uniforms. The introduction of school uniforms has helped to reduce school violence. Much of school violence is linked to the clothes which different youth gangs wear. In schools with youth gangs, the number of fights decreased by 40 per cent after uniforms were introduced.Uniforms also send a message that students are at school to study, not to play. They create school pride. These things help to reform problem students and improve their performance at school. Although school uniforms are popular in some areas, there have also been serious complaints in others. Many parents feel that uniforms keep students from expressing themselves, while others don’t want to pay the bill for extra clothes. A few parents have even used the law to stop school uniforms from being introduced. For this reason, it is unlikely that uniforms will ever be required in all American schools.。

2024北京中考英语听说朗读文本全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1A Day at the ZooHi there! My name is Emily and I'm 10 years old. I want to tell you all about my amazing day at the zoo last weekend. It was the best day ever!On Saturday morning, my mom woke me up really early. I was kinda grumpy at first because who likes getting up before the sun? But then she told me we were going to the zoo and I got super excited! I love animals, especially the big furry ones like lions and bears. We had a quick breakfast of cereal and orange juice, and then we were off. Dad drove us to the zoo which is on the other side of the city. The drive took forever but I didn't mind because I was daydreaming about all the cool animals I would get to see. Finally, we arrived and I could hardly contain my excitement. The zoo entrance had this huge elephant statue that was taller than a tree! We bought our tickets and went inside. The firstthing we saw was the bird sanctuary. There were so many pretty birds with bright feathers flying around. I saw toucans, macaws, flamingos and even a funny-looking bird called a shoebill stork. It looked like it was wearing a giant shoe for a beak!Next, we walked over to the big cat area. That's where they keep the lions, tigers, leopards and other fierce felines. The lions were so majestic, just lounging around in the sun. But then one of them let out this incredible roar that made me jump! The tiger was pacing back and forth, looking very sleek and dangerous. I wouldn't want to meet one of those in a dark alley! After the big cats, we went to see the apes and monkeys. They were hilarious, swinging from branch to branch and making funny noises. My favorite was the orangutan - it looked so silly with its long arms and furry orange hair. One of the chimps started picking its nose and then ate it! Gross, but also kinda funny. For lunch, we had hot dogs and fries at a little restaurant inside the zoo. I got ketchup all over my face because I was eating too fast. I was just so excited to get back and see more animals! In the afternoon, we saw the bears, both polar bears and grizzly bears. The polar bear was splashing around in a big poolof water which looked really refreshing on such a hot day. The grizzly bear was napping and letting out these funny snoring sounds. I wouldn't want to wake him up, that's for sure! Finally, we went to see the elephants, giraffes and zebras in the African safari area. The baby elephant was sooo cute, following its mom around and using its trunk like a little snorkel in the water. The giraffes had the longest necks and tongues I've ever seen - one of them actually licked my face with its giant purple tongue! And the zebras were beautiful with their black and white stripes.By the end of the day, my feet were sore from all the walking but I had the biggest smile on my face. We stopped at the gift shop on the way out and I got a stuffed lion that I named Leo. I can't wait to go back to the zoo again someday. It was the best day ever!篇2Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm a 6th grader at Beijing Elementary School. Today I want to tell you all about my daily life and what a typical day is like for me.I wake up pretty early, around 6:30am, because I have to get ready for school. My mom makes me a healthy breakfast, usuallysome congee with vegetables or an egg sandwich. I don't like to skip breakfast because then I feel really tired at school. At 7:30am, I leave for school. My dad drives me most days, but sometimes I take the school bus if he has an early meeting at work. The drive to school takes about 20 minutes because there's a lot of traffic in the mornings. I really enjoy listening to music or an audiobook in the car to pass the time.My first class starts at 8:15am. We have lots of different subjects like math, Chinese, English, science, and history. My favorite is probably English because I find learning another language super interesting and fun! We get a short break at10am where we can have a snack and play outside for 15 minutes. After the morning classes, we have lunch in the cafeteria at 11:45am. The food is pretty good - they have different options like noodles, rice dishes, and vegetables. My friends and I like to trade food sometimes to try new things. In the afternoon from 1pm to 4pm, we have more classes like art, music, and P.E. P.E. is my least favorite because I'm not very athletic or coordinated. But I know it's important to exercise and stay active. Art class is really enjoyable for me since I love painting and being creative.Once school is over at 4pm, I head home and have a little free time before starting homework. I'll watch some TV, play outside, or read for fun. Having some downtime helps me recharge after a long day.I start my homework around 5:30pm. I have assignments for almost every subject, so it takes me a couple of hours to get through it all. Sometimes I get frustrated when there's a lot of work, but my parents remind me that it's important to develop good study habits. We have family dinner at 7:30pm. My mom is an amazing cook and always makes really delicious homemade Chinese dishes. We'll talk about our days and my parents ask me how things are going at school. Having that family time is one of my favorite parts of the day. After dinner around 8:30pm, I relax by watching a show or playing games on my tablet. I try not to use too much screen time though, so I'll also read books, draw, or play board games sometimes. My parents make me start getting ready for bed at 9pm.I go to sleep around 9:30pm so I can be well-rested for the next day. Even though I'm just a kid, I stay pretty busy with school, activities, homework, and more. But I know it's importantto work hard now so I can have opportunities later on. I feel very lucky to be able to get a good education. That's a typical day in my life! Being a 6th grader in Beijing keeps me busy for sure, but I really appreciate all the chances I have to learn and grow. Thanks for listening, and let me know if you have any other questions!篇3Hi there! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I go to Beida Elementary School here in Beijing. Today I want to tell you all about my summer vacation last year. It was the best summer ever!It started off with a big family trip. My mom, dad, little brother Tao, and I went to Hainan Island down in the very south of China. We stayed at this awesome beach resort with a huge pool, waterslides, and everything! The beach itself was beautiful with soft white sand and bright blue ocean water. I spent hours every day swimming, building sandcastles, and looking for little crabs and shells. One of the coolest things we did was go snorkeling. We all got to wear masks and tubes to breathe underwater and see the coral reefs and tropical fish up close. There were so many colors -bright yellow fish, striped purple ones, even some that were almost transparent! I saw a sea turtle which was incredible. Tao got a little scared at first being underwater but then he loved watching the fish swim all around us.Another day, we went on a boat tour around the island. The guide told us all about the history of Hainan and how it used to be underwater millions of years ago. We saw these huge rock formations sticking up out of the ocean that used to be ancient mountains! We also got to stop at a little fishing village and I tried my first-ever fresh coconut drink straight from a coconut. It was so delicious and refreshing on such a hot day. After a week in Hainan, we travelled to my grandparents' hometown of Xi'an to visit them for a few days. That's where my dad grew up. I love going there because the city is full of such cool history. We always visit these incredible terracotta warrior statues that were buried underground for over 2000 years before being discovered! Can you imagine that? Thousands of life-sized soldier sculptures all standing at attention. My mind was blown thinking about how long they had been there. My grandparents live in a traditional courtyard house in the Muslim Quarter neighborhood. That's where my grandpa's ancestors are from. The narrow streets are packed with tinyshops, markets, and restaurants. Everything smells so good from all the street food - skewers of lamb kebabs, warm naan bread, and my favorite - hand-pulled noodles! You can watch the chefs stretching and twisting the dough into long noodles right in front of you. I tried making them myself but it's much harder than it looks! One night we went to this amazing fountain show at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It's this gigantic historic pagoda that's been around for over 1300 years! The show combined lights, music, water fountains, and even fire at some points. The water would dance and change colors in time to traditional Chinese music playing. The grand finale featured the whole pagoda appearing to be on fire with bright red and orange light projections. It looked like a burning torch against the night sky. So cool! After Xi'an, we headed back to Beijing but stopped for a few days at my aunt and uncle's place in Chengde. They live in this gorgeous villa surrounded by mountains. We went on some fun hikes and swam in the rivers and streams in the area. One day we visited these amazing imperial summer gardens and palaces built way back in the 1700s. The Chinese emperors used to escape Beijing's heat by vacationing there. The gardens hadpavilions, temples, bridges, and even a replica of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery! The last stop on our trip was Inner Mongolia to visit some nomadic families living out in the vast grasslands there. That was a really unique experience! We stayed in traditional Mongolian yurts which are circular tents made of wood and canvas. At night, we would sit around a fire, drink milk tea, and listen to folks play traditional instruments and sing throatsinging songs. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before!During the days, we went on horseback rides across the wide open prairies and hiked up grassy hills. The landscape looked like it went on forever with no trees or buildings in sight, just sporadic herds of cows, sheep, and horses roaming free. One afternoon, some of the nomads showed us how they practice archery on horseback, which was their main hunting method traditionally. They were such excellent riders and incredible archers to be able to do both at once. I just about fell off my horse trying it!We also got to participate in an authentic Mongolian barbecue one evening. It involved digging a pit in the ground, filling it with hot coals and rocks, and then putting a grated rack over the top to cook all the meat and vegetables. Everything wasso flavorful and tender cooked that way! For dessert, we had thick yogurt drinks and sweet rice biscuits. It was all absolutely delicious.Well, that was pretty much my amazing summer travels last year! I had such an awesome time experiencing so many different cultures, foods, activities, and sights all across China. From beach vacations to historic cities to staying with nomads on the grasslands, it was the trip of a lifetime. I feel so lucky to have had that opportunity and made so many wonderful memories. Can't wait for more adventures this summer!篇4Hi there! I'm Jia Ming and I'm 11 years old. I just finished 5th grade at Huaxia Elementary School here in Beijing. I had such an exciting year and can't wait to tell you all about it!The best thing that happened was getting a new English teacher, Mr. Davis. He's from Canada and speaks perfect English of course. Having a native speaker as our English teacher made learning the language so much fun. In the past, English class could be a little boring with just our Chinese teachers. But Mr. Davis always had us playing games and singing songs to practice vocabulary and grammar. My favorite game was "Quotation Marks" where we had to listen carefully as Mr. Davis read a quote or famous saying and then put our hands up in the shape of quotation marks around our faces whenever he paused talking. If we messed up the hand motions, we were out! It was such a silly game but really helped me concentrate on understanding full sentences in English.Another highlight was when we did reader's theater and acted out stories and plays from our English textbooks. I got to be Goldilocks and had so many lines to memorize! Speaking all that English dialogue in front of my classmates wasnerve-wracking at first, but it ended up being a blast. Now I'm way more confident speaking English out loud.Outside of class, I tried to immerse myself in English as much as possible. My parents signed me up for an English learning app that had cool animated videos teaching vocabulary, pronunciation, and more. I loved collecting points and badges for completing lessons. We also started watching some movies and shows in English at home with Chinese subtitles, like the new Disney remakes of classic animated films. While I couldn't understand everything, I caught more words and phrases than I expected. The highlight of my English adventures though was my first time traveling abroad with my family over winter break. We went to Singapore and I was amazed that I could understand and communicate so much better than when we last traveled a few years ago before I started intensively studying English. Ordering food, asking directions, and making simple conversation was pretty easy. Singapore was also an awesome place to visit with amazing attractions like Gardens by the Bay and the giant Ferris wheel on the waterfront. When we came back to Beijing, my English skills had improved so much that I got moved up to an advanced English class for 6th grade next year. I'm excited but also a little nervous because it will be super challenging. The advanced class has students way ahead of me who have been taking extra English tutoring forever. I'll have to work twice as hard to catch up to their level. That's not going to stop me from trying my best though! My biggest goal for the upcoming school year is to read my first full novel in English. I'm already practicing by reading short children's books like the Dog Man series. I can understand most of the vocabulary and basic plot pretty well, especially with the funny illustrations providing context clues. Someday I hope tomove on to the Harry Potter books, which look so thick and intimidating but are supposed to be modern classics. As you can probably tell, learning English is my biggest passion right now. My dream is to become an interpreter working at big events and businesses dealing with international affairs. How cool would it be to translate for world leaders, athletes, and celebrities?! With hard work and determination, I'm confident I can make this dream a reality. The world is becoming such an interconnected place and having English skills opens up so many opportunities.Well, that's enough from me. Writing this all out has me even more fired up to continue leveling up my English over the next year. Wish me luck in 6th grade! I'll do my best to make my family, my teachers, and myself proud. Thanks for reading and talk to you again soon!
