母亲节源起于美国马塞诸塞州的安德弗斯(Andrews) 家庭。

1908年，社会活动家安妮·贾维斯(Anna Jarvis) 开始行动，呼吁设立一个节日以表彰母亲们的无私奉献之爱。

贾维斯的母亲始终是她心中的英雄和灵感来源，而在母亲病逝后，她更加深刻地认识到母爱的伟大。

她认为每个母亲的爱都是无私的，都值得被尊重、被感激。

于是，她开始发起号召，希望在每年的五月份进行一次纪念活动，以祝福全体母亲，并呼吁全国政府正式立法。

由于她的努力，1914年美国总统伍德罗·威尔逊(Woodrow Wilson) 签署了一份宣言，将每年5月的第二个星期日定为母亲节。

策划过程中，她提出了以康乃馨作为母亲节的花卉，寓意是用这些柔和的花朵纪念所有过世的母亲。

她还在财务方面支持康乃馨的生产和销售，为此自己又筹集了许多资金。

所以，到现在为止，送康乃馨作为母亲节的礼物依然是很有含义的。
