(1)培养严谨的学风;

Between 1849 and 1882, more than 30,000 Chinese came to California. Most were men. They had been farmers in China. They came here to be miners and laborers. They ended up doing many other jobs, too.Like many other immigrants, they did not plan to stay in America. They came because of their ties to their homeland and their families. They planned to return to China with their fortunes and help their families.Only a few Chinese gold miners struck it rich. Most picked over the areas that had been mined already. But still, white miners resented the Chinese. Slowly, they drove the “yellow peril” from the mining camps.By the end of the 1850s, many Chinese returned home. Those who stayed found other jobs.Few women had come west in the gold rush. The Chinese saw a good business opportunity. They began doing the jobs women would have done. Many became house servants. Many more opened laundries. The Chinese opened restaurants. Chop suey and show mein are popular Chinese-American dishes. The Chinese probably created these dishes to serve to the white miners. Other Chinese became fishermen, farmers, and even cigar makers.60. Why did Chinese go to America in the mid-1800s?A. Because they could find good jobs there.B. Because they had found gold there.C. Because they could open laundries and restaurants there.D. Because they heard there was gold there.61. Dream to strike it richC. The difference between men and womenD. Gold miners in America(B)My father was Chief engineer of a merchant ship, which was sunk in World War II. The book Night of the U-boats told the story.MemoriesIn September, 1940, my mother, sister and I went to Swansea, where my father’s ship was getting ready to sail. We brought him a family photograph to be kept with him at all times and keep him sail. Then I remember my mother lying face down, sobbing. She had heard from a friend that the ship had been sunk by a torpedo(鱼雷).I can remember the arrival of the telegram(电报),which in those days always brought bad news. My grand- mother opened it. It read, “Safe, Love Ted.”My most vivid memory is being woken and brought down to sit on my father’s knee, his arm in a bandage. He was judged unfit to return to sea and took a shore job in Glasgow for the rest of the war. For as long as I can remember, he had a weak heart. Mother said it was caused by the torpedoes. He said it was because of the cigarettes. Whichever, he died suddenly in his early 50s.Ten years later I read Night of the U-boats and was able to complete the story.TorpedoOne torpedo struck the ship. Father was in the engine room, where the third engineer was killed. He shut down the engines to slow the ship making it easier for it to be abandoned.By the time he got on deck (甲板) he was alone. Every lifeboat was gone except one which had stuck firm. When he tried to cut it free it swung against the ship, injuring his hand and arm. He had no choice but to jump—still with the photograph in his pocket.Three days later, he and other survivors were safe in Glasgow. All 23 with him signed the back of the photograph. In my room is the book and the photograph. Often, glass in hand, I have wondered how I would have dealt with an explosion, a sinking ship, a jump into a vast ocean and a wait for rescue? Lest(以免)we forget, I have some more whisky and toast the heroes of the war.63. We can infer(推断) that the mother and children went to Swansea ________.A. to meet a friendB. to see the father offC. to take a family photoD. to enjoy the sailing of the ship64. What did the author learn about the father from the telegram?A. he was still alive.B. His knee was broken.C. His ship had been sunk.D. He had arrived in Glasgow.65. What can we know about the author’s father after his ship was attacked?A. He lost his armB. He repaired the engines.C. He managed to take a lifeboat.D. He was the last to leave the ship.66. What is the passage mainly about?A. A group of forgotten heroesB. A book describing a terrifying battle.C. A ship engineer’s wartime experience.D. A merchant’s memories of a sea rescue.(C)Over a period of time, many habitats (栖息地)change with respect to the types of plants and animals that live there. This change is known as succession.Succession occurs because plants and animals cause a change in the environment in which they live. The first weeds and grasses that appear on a bare field, for example, change the environment by shielding the soil from direct sunlight. As these plants spread, the ground becomes cooler and more moist than it was originally. Thus, the environment at the ground surface has been changed. The new surface conditions favor the sprouting(产生)of shrubs. As shrubs grow, they kill the grasses by preventing light from reaching them and also enhance (增加)the soil. Pine seedlings (苗)soon take hold and as they grow, they in turn shade out the shrubs. They are not able to shade out oak and hickory (山核桃)seedlings, however, that have found the forest floor suitable. These seedlings grew into large trees that eventually shade out the pines.67.The best title of this passage is _____.A. The Importance of Weeds and GrassesB. The Success of Oak and HickoryC. How Environmental Habitats ChangeD. Animal and Plant Habitats68.It can be inferred (推理) from the passage that ______.A. oak and hickory trees grow taller than pinesB. weeds and grasses prefer cold climateC. pines and grasses can exist togetherD. birds encourage the growth of shrubs69. Which of the following is a stage of succession as described in the passage?A. A forest cut down to build an airport.B. A flood washing away a crop of wheatC. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read.(A)To the Editor,I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am accustomed to reading excellent newspapers such as The New York Times. In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading the recipes(食谱) in the magazine, as well as the Styles section. The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story. I've never read an article that doesn't contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors. For instance, in last week's issue, you misspelled the word “secretary,” used a singular verb with a plural noun, and used “it's”as a possessive(所有格). And that was just in the lead story! In case you never went to elementary school, “it’s”means “it is”. It's not a possessive adjective! It's a pity that this tiny little hick (乡下) town has only one newspaper, because I' d like to have an alternative to the rag you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can' t spell correctly, how can you get your facts right?I've been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. "He should take some responsibility for the killings," an Israeli official said. "He has done nothing to stop the terrorist groups."But the decision has angered many other countries. China said that Arafat is the true leader, elected by the Palestinian people, and removing him would harm the peace in the Middle East. This view is shared by other governments.Arafat himself said: "They can kill me, but never get me out of my country." He has spent most of his life in danger as the chief target of Israel. But, just like a cat with nine lives, Arafat escaped every time. For years he has made a practice of sleeping in a different bed each night, thinking a moving target is harder to hit.In 1985, Israel sent fighter planes to kill Arafat. The wild bombing destroyed his old headquarters in Tunis but Arafat himself was unhurt. In 1992, the aircraft in which he was flying over north Africa broke into two during a crash landing. The crew was killed but he managed to remain alive. What is so unbelievable is that he always remains calm in great danger.Israeli tanks and helicopters attacked his headquarters in Ramallah in December, 2001. When they saw the attackers coming, Arafat's bodyguards ignored his orders to stay still and carried him to safety underground. Seconds later, several bombs exploded nearby. Though safe, his bodyguards were so scared they were soaked in sweat. But Arafat, with Israeli tanks only 200 metres away, showed no fear at all. So it is important that your own surveyor is sent to make a structural survey of the house after you have made an offer for it, but before you enter into legal commitment.Your surveyor’s job is to find out all the internal and exterior defects in the house and to indicate to you how much money it will cost to put them right. He will tell you whether the houseis worth the price being asked, and may suggest a price to negotiate with the seller. If he does his job well, he will earn his fee (which for a straightforward survey of a five-room house is not likely to be less than 50 pounds)by providing information which can be used to start negotiation. Many defects are not apparent to the ordinary buyer but can be detected by the expert---the surveyor. The building society or local authority from which you hope to get a loan will send its surveyor too, whose fee you will have to pay. This surveyor makes only a valuation (not a full survey) to see whether the property is good security for the part of the purchase price you might be lent. His report is confidential(机密的)and may not be available to you, though building societies may be prepared to tell the purchaser about really major defects following their valuation. They may in fact make it a condition of the mortgage(抵押)that you will have the defects repaired with a stated time (at your own expense of course). If you are buying a new house, you will also need assurance that the house is properly built and that the builder will accept responsibility for any defects that may appear due to poor design, materials or workmanship. If a builder is registered with the National House-Builder’s Registration Council you will know that the house has been spot-check inspected at periodic intervals during building. Arbitration(仲裁)machinery, and, for newly-built houses, a 10-year protection against major structural defects, exist should things go wrong and the builder seek to avoid responsibility. If the builder is not registered it will be wise to get a competent surveyor to check the house over during various stages of construction. ( He will charge a fee for each visit to the site)77. What is the main reason for employing a surveyor?A. To inspect and report on the condition of the house.B. To tell you the true value of the house.C. To assist you in negotiating for a lower price.D. To advise you about carrying out repairs.78. Why does the building society or local authority send its own surveyor?A. To provide them with the information they need in advising the possible buyer.B. To check the report prepared by the buyer’s surveyor.C. To check what repairs the buyer must carry out before getting a loan.D. To find out whether it will be advisable to lend the purchase money.79. It is an instinct that can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we are using resources within the u nconscious mind. When the resources of two persons’ unconscious minds link together into the same frequency, we call it telepathy.81.__________________We can either send or receive telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you, you are most likely to be better at sending.82.__________________You can easily put your abilities to the test. Think of somebody and wait for him or her to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phones ring, but try “feeling” who is contacting you. Don’t guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However, if either of these works for you, it doesn’t mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.83.__________________Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams had a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other’s unconscious mind.84.__________________The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other’s mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other’s mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child’ eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this person who would always want to be there for them, and the mother’s deep desire to protect the child from harm.IV.
