Unit OneSection AThe Green Banana

The comprehension and appreciation of the words describing sound, colour, light, heat, size and smell.3. The appreciation of the words and expressions used for stress and exaggeration.4. Some useful expressions such as to make a point of, it is a point of honour…, and etcBackground informationThis text is taken from Advanced Comprehension and Appreciation Pieces (1962), which was intended for students preparing for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency Examination, & for students in the top class of secondary schools or in the first year of a university course. The Middle Eastern BazaarThe Middle Eastern bazaar takes you back hundreds --- even thousands --- of years. The one I am thinking of particularly is entered by a Gothic - arched gateway of aged brick and stone. You pass from the heat and glare of a big, open square into a cool, darkcavern which extends as far as the eye can see, losing itself in the shadowy distance. Little donkeys with harmoniously tinkling bells thread their way among the throngs of people entering and leavingthe bazaar. The roadway is about twelve feet wide, but it is narrowed every few yards by little stalls where goods of every conceivable kind are sold. The din of the stall-holder; crying their wares, of donkey-boys and porters clearing a way for themselves by shouting vigorously, and of would-be purchasers arguing and bargaining is continuous and makes you dizzy. Then as you penetrate deeper into the bazaar, the noise of the entrance fades away, and you come to the muted cloth-market. The earthen floor, beaten hard by countless feet, deadens the sound of footsteps, and the vaulted mud-brick walls and roof have hardly any sounds to echo. The shop-keepers speak in slow, measured tones, and the buyers, overwhelmed by the sepulchral atmosphere, follow suit .One of the peculiarities of the Eastern bazaar is that shopkeepers dealing in the same kind of goods do not scatter themselves over the bazaar, in order to avoid competition, but collect in the same area, so that purchasers can know where to find them, and so that they can form a closely knit guild against injustice or persecution . In the cloth-market, for instance, all the sellers of material for clothes, curtains, chair covers and so on line the roadway on both sides, each open-fronted shop having a trestle trestle table for display and shelves for storage. Bargaining is the order of the cay, and veiled women move at a leisurely pace from shop to shop, selecting, pricing and doing a little preliminary bargaining before they narrow down their choice and begin the really serious business of beating the price down.It is a point of honour with the customer not to let the shopkeeper guess what it is she really likes and wants until the last moment. If he does guess correctly, he will price the item high, and yield little in the bargaining. The seller, on the other hand, makes a point of protesting that the price he is charging is depriving him of all profit, and that he is sacrificing this because of his personal regard for the customer. Bargaining can go on the whole day, or even several days, with the customer coming and going at intervals .One of the most picturesque and impressive parts of the bazaar is the copper-smiths' market. As you approach it, a tinkling and banging and clashing begins to impinge on your ear. It grows louder and more distinct, until you round a corner and see a fairyland of dancing flashes, as the burnished copper catches the light of innumerable lamps and braziers . In each shop sit the apprentices –boys and youths, some of them incredibly young – hammering away at copper vessels of all shapes and sizes, while the shop-owner instructs, and sometimes takes a hand with a hammer himself. In the background, a tiny apprentice blows a bi-, charcoal fir e with a hugeleather bellows worked by a string attached to his big toe -- the red of the live coals glowing, bright and then dimming rhythmically to the strokes of the bellows. Here you can findbeautiful pots and bowlsengrave with delicate andintricate traditionaldesigns, or the simple, everyday kitchenwareused in this country, pleasing in form, butundecorated and strictlyfunctional. Elsewherethere is the carpet-market,with its profusion of richcolours, varied textures and regional designs -- some bold and simple, others unbelievably detailed and yet harmonious. Then there is the spice-market, with its pungent and exotic smells; and thefood-market, where you can buy everything you need for the most sumptuous dinner, or sit in a tiny restaurant with porters and apprentices and eat your humble bread and cheese. The dye-market, the pottery-market and the carpenters' market lie elsewhere in the maze of vaulted streets which honeycomb this bazaar. Every here and there, a doorway gives a glimpse of a sunlit courtyard, perhaps before a mosque or a caravanserai , where camels lie disdainfully chewing their hay, while the great bales of merchandise they have carried hundreds of miles across the desert lie beside them.Perhaps the most unforgettable thing in the bazaar, apart from its general atmosphere, is the place where they make linseed oil. It is a vast, sombre cavern of a room, some thirty feet high and sixty feet square, and so thick with the dust of centuries that the mudbrick walls and vaulted roof are only dimly visible. In this cavern are three massive stone wheels, each with a huge pole through its centre as an axle. The pole is attached at the one end to an upright post, around which it can revolve, and at the other to a blind-folded camel, which walks constantly in a circle, providing the motive power to turn the stone wheel. This revolves in a circular stone channel, into which an attendant feeds linseed. The stone wheel crushes it to a pulp, which is then pressed to extract the oil .The camels are the largest and finest I have ever seen, and in superb condition –muscular, massive and stately. The pressing of the linseed pulp to extract the oil is done by a vast ramshackle apparatus of beams and ropes and pulleys which towers to the vaulted ceiling and dwarfs the camels and their stonewheels. The machine is operated by one man, who shovels the linseed pulp into a stone vat, climbs up nimbly to a dizzy height to fasten ropes, and then throws his weight on to a great beam made out of a tree trunk to set the ropes and pulleys in motion. Ancient girders girders creak and groan , ropes tighten and then a trickle of oil oozes oozes down a stone runnel into a used petrol can. Quickly the trickle becomes a flood of glistening linseed oil as the beam sinks earthwards, taut and protesting, its creaks blending with the squeaking and rumbling of the grinding-wheels and the occasional grunts and sighs of the camels.(from Advanced Comprehension and Appreciation pieces, 1962 )NOTES1) This piece is taken from Advanced Comprehension and Appreciation Pieces, compiled for overseas students by L. But boys schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions(情感) and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.Always boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和……相符) the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man".Surprisingly, the findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. George Carl, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can adjust lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute eye, learn best through touch, andare physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的) and prefer the modern genre (类型) in which violence and sexism are major themes," James wrote.Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be "masterful and in charge"in relationships. "In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.【1】Traditionally, in a mixed school ,boys __________.A.behave more responsibly B.perform relatively betterC.grow up more healthily D.receive a better education【2】The writer argues that a single-sex school would __________.A.encourage boys to express their emotions more freelyB.help boys to be more competitive in schoolsC.force boys to be their emotions to be "real men"D.naturally strengthen boys’ traditional image of a man【3】In Abigail James’ opinion, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is ______.A.boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested inB.boys can focus on their lessons without being distractedC.teaching can be adjusted to suiting the characteristics of boysD.teaching can be designed to promote boys’ team spirit【4】The underlined word "acute" in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to ______ .A.lovely B.seriousC.sharp D.dull4."BANG!" the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and me on the other side.We were both in great anger. "Never set foot in this house again!" stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feelings. I wandered aimlessly.A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in ourways of thinking. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.I thought to myself: "Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?"In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except father’s.Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature. The light was still on. "Am I wrong"I whispered, maybe… With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I h ad ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. "We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers," India's transport minister Nitin Gadkari wrote. The optical illusions(视觉错觉) are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier, India had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a safety hazard for high-speed vehicles. India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, over 200,000 people are killed by road accidents. The use of optical illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmedabad for instance, a mother and her daughter, both artists, have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of 2016. The artists say their motto is "to increase the attention of drivers", and that the concept has been successfully tested in accident-prone zones on a highway. However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India's decision does not consider the safety of a large number of pedestrians. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.【1】Why are 3D paintings used on main highways and roads?A.To make the surroundings more beautiful.B.To attract the attention of tourists.C.To reduce the rate of traffic accidents.D.To show the advanced technology.【2】Which of the following words is closest to the meaning of “hazard” in paragraph 2?A.Reminder B.ThreatC.Regulation D.Theory【3】What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4?A.Philadelphia, the U.S.A is th second place to use virtual speed breakers in the world.B.The idea tested in Ahmedabad recently has been a failure.C.The new policy of 3D zebra crossings must be carried out smoothly.D.The use of optical illusions as speed breakers is controversial in India.【4】What do we know about 3D zebra crossings from the passage?A.They can vastly lower the death rate in India.B.They have been widely used in India so far.C.They are designed to increase drivers’ attention.D.They are welcomed by both drivers and pedestrians.4.I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I encountered a courteous human beingin this modern era.Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being in a coffee place, with my two daughters. The place was crowded as usual and we had to climb steep stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we went down the narrow stairs, where there was hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.Just as I was in the middle of the stairs, a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase. I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man going up. I kept coming down as fast as I could. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started walking up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up.Such well mannered people are hard to find these days, when pushing is very common in our advanced but aggressive society. We applauded for his chivalry(骑士精神).【1】What did the author think of the man at the first sight of him?A.He was in a hurry.B.He would wait for her.C.He would cross her rudely.D.He was a man with good manners.【2】Why did the author’s daughters worry about her?A.She was too old to walk fast.B.She was easy to be disturbed.C.She took up too much space.D.She focused too much on the man.【3】What can we learn about the man from Paragraph 4?A.He might be a waiter of the café.B.He might have an urgent business to do.C.He fell in love with one of the author’s daughters.D.He would hold the door open for all.5.Steep Rock Skills $100 per person. They want to pass a law in each of the 50 states to require high school student to pass the test.A 2010 national test showed only about 25 percent of students in their final year of high school had a good understanding of American government. Thirty-six percent did not have even a basic understanding.“That’s a shame, and it’s not only a shame.” Said John Hale, the Associate Director of the Center for Civic Education California. Mr. Hale thinks it is dangerous when citizens do not know or care about how their government works. He says students do not only to learn facts about government. They should also learn how to take part in their communities. “Requiring high school student to take the test might be a way to improve students’ civic behavior,” he says. But some wonder if a test young people take in high school will make adults more active in their communities. Sam Stone writes reports for the Joe Foss Institute. He says research shows that civic education does result in more involved adults. He noted a 2012 survey found that the more young people studied civics in high school, the more likely they were to get actively involved in their communities. In another state, Virginia, many people are against the test. Meg Gruver is the president of the Virginia Education Association. She says students already take classes in civics and US history.
