9月30日晚参加了广东省政府举行的国庆招待会。
因为有外国驻粤使节出席，所以省长黄华华的讲话伴有英文字幕打在投影屏上。
随便瞄一眼，除了觉得译文像许国璋先生调侃过的“新华体”之外，还有硬伤，比如“Pearl River”写成“Pear River”之类。
本来像这类重要讲话的正式译文应该经过多重审核，但竟然放过了这种低级错误，真不可思议。
不过，还有比这更不可思议的，出现在国家一级的外交场合——
今年3月6日，在日内瓦会谈的美国国务卿希拉里和俄罗斯外交部长谢尔盖-拉夫罗夫共进晚餐。
用餐前希拉里送给拉夫罗夫一件小礼物，是一个红色按钮，上面印着英文“Reset”和俄文“Peregruzka”字样，意为“重启”，象征着重新检视并启动两国的合作关系。
希拉里将按钮递给拉夫罗夫，说：“我们尽全力希望找到合适的俄文表达这一意思。
你觉得我们表达对了么？”没想到拉夫罗夫说：“你们弄错了。
”原来俄语“重启”的正确拼写应该是“Peregruzka”，现在印在按钮上的俄语单词是“超负荷”的意思。
当然，外交家大都是有急智的人，希拉里马上说，这一错误的翻译比正确的更恰当，因为在重启关系的过程里美俄双方都面临着“超负荷”的工作量。
把英文歌“重启”错译为“超负荷”的译员不知道会被追究什么样的责任。
但1978年美国总统卡特访问波兰，致辞时谈到“波兰人民的愿望”，随行译员却把“愿望”翻译成“贪欲”，引起轩然大波。
回国后，这位可怜的译员就被解雇了，而且据说还“终身不得录用”。
译员犯错误是难免的，译员也是人，老虎也有打盹儿的时候呢！不过，译员的责任可是一刻也不能忘的。
责任心强就能在很大程度上避免或减少失误，造成的损失也就少些。
已故原中国外交部翻译室副主任程镇球先生多年前和我聊天时谈到抗美援朝时就如何把接替麦克亚瑟任美军第八集团军司令的Matthew Bunker Ridgway的姓氏译成汉语而煞费苦心，因为台湾译为“李奇伟”，颇有气势，后来他和同事们想了很久，终于想出了对Ridgway表示轻蔑的我们自己的译名——“李奇微”，并提供给新华通讯社使用。
这时候译员的职业责任心里融进了对国家和民族的忠诚。
中国政府部门一向坚持“外事无小事”的信条，非常重视外事翻译的准确性。
遗憾的是目前中国的外语教育偏向“流利”，缺少“准确”性的训练，于是连省长重要讲话的译文也出现硬伤。
语言的交际功能的确不容忽视，但对于以外语为专业的人来说，除了日常神话的交际之外，必须胜任以外语来作为文化底蕴深厚的交际。
