日常生活类1、Are you familiar with the greeting, "Can I add you on WeChat?” It seems like every time we meet new friends or colleagues nowadays, the first thing that springs to mind is adding each other on the app. Nevertheless, more than 80 percent of WeChat users report feeling stressed or anxious when they receive a large number of messages, according to a study done recently by the app's developer Tencent. In other words, WeChat can overwhelm(使应接小暇) us,while also breaking down the boundaries between our work and private lives.Just think how easy it is now for bosses to hand out assignments during the holiday, so long as they have your WeChat contact. When you're at the cinema enjoying a romantic movie or having a barbecue in the backyard, you can never cut yourself off from the outside world unless you switch off your phone. Not to post something in WeChat Moments before replying to your boss first!Apart from interrupting your leisure time, WeChat can also reduce your productivity at work. For many office workers, logging in to WeChat on their computers at the start of the day has become routine. But what if browsing the Moments distracts us from doing the work? The app steals our time without us even noticing it, making us have the false belief that we are busy all the time. And as if that weren’t bad enough, there’re the “one-off” friends who take up space on our WeChat friend list. A handy way to check how many one-off friends you have is to take a look at your chat history with them. Sometimes, you only sent the initial friend requests so you could invite them to a WeChat group or inform them of something for your boss. Yet still, as your friend count(好友数量) ever goes up, it can make you feel the need to post selfies and share details of your life in your Moments, just so you can stay up to date. With WeChat , all our spare time is swallowed up by the constant torrent of messages and our attention keeps getting diverted by Moments and pop-up ads. So it’s time that we should do something to nip this problem in the bud.(1)What is most of WeChat users' reaction when receiving a mass of messages? A.They are quite upset.B.They think it’s unavoidable.C.They break down.D.They complain about Tencent.(2)Which of the following may make your boss angry according to Paragraph 2?A.Enjoying a movie at the weekend.B.Posting something in WeChat Moments.C.Having a barbecue on vacation.D.Ignoring the assignment he handed out when seeing it.(3)How can we decide who is the one-off friend on our WeChat friend list?A.By checking if you sent the initial friend request.B.By seeing if your boss asked you to inform him of something.C.By having a look at your chat record.D.By counting the number of your friends on the list.(4)What can be a suitable title for this text?A.Is WeChat becoming a necessity in our life?B.Are We What friend requests ruining your life?C.Does your boss want to be your WeChat friend?D.Is it better to have more WeChat friends?2、When the telephone rings late at night, most women guess it must be one of only four or five people calling. A sister? Maybe. An emergency? Possibly.A mother? Probably not at that time of night. Much more probably it is a close female friend calling to tell you that she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV.At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships are becoming more and more important. Erika, a 32-year-old lawyer, is strengthened by her ten-year fri endship with her married friend Jane. “I was very sick one night, so I called Jane at about 3:00 a.m. to talk about it,” she says. “She was very supportive and even came over to take me to the doctor’s the next morning.”As American TV shows like Friends, which follows the lives of a very close groupof young friends, have become more popular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships. TV shows like this tell us that our romantic relationships may not last, but we need to keep in touch with our close friends if we want to survive.A TV show called Real Women is about the lives and relationships of five former school friends. In this show, family, husbands, and work are all less important than friendships. One of its actresses says the show reflects her own experience. “Friendship is about commitment. I don’t see some of my friends for ages but when we get together, it is as if time hasn”t passed.”This is true of Erika and Jane’s friendship. With Erika’s family 200 miles away, it is Jane w ho keeps a spare set of keys to Erika’s apartment and waters her plants whenever she is away. “Having Jane around gives me a certain amount of freedom. It is not the kind of thing that you could ask anyone to do, but she knows I would do the same for her.”Erika feels that because she no longer sees her family every day, she now enjoys a closer relationship with her best friend. Jane, who may move to a different city soon, is worried about leaving such a support system of friends. “My friends have more to do with my life than my parents and, therefore, I don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining things to them. Friends are more up to date with what is happening.”(1)According to the passage, a late-night phone call for most women is probably from ______.A. a friendB. a relativeC. a strangerD. a doctor(2)TV shows like Friends tell us that ______.A. marriages with friends often end up in failureB. families and work are as important as friendsC. close friends help us face problems in lifeD. friendship fades(消退) as time goes by(3)Which of the statements will the author probably agree with?A. A near friend is more helpful than a faraway relative.B. Both marriage and friendship demand commitment.C. However far away we’re, pare nts worry about us.D. Long distance makesthe hearts closer.3、I was desperately nervous about becoming car-free. But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed. No problem, I thought: we’ll buy another. But the insurance payout didn’t even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car—I worked out that, with the loan (贷款) we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as £600 a month. And that’s when I had my fancy i dea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. We have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes’ walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family. But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their frie nds think about our family being “too poor to afford a car”? (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.)My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital? (an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events? (buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I’d soon realize that a car was a necessity.Eight months on, I wonder whether we’ll ever own a car again. The idea that you “have to” own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind.I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising car costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.(1)The author decided to live a car-free life partly because ______.A.most families chose to go car-freeB.he was hurt in a terrible car accidentC.the cost of a new car was too muchD.the traffic jam was unbearable for him(2)What is the attitud e of the author’s family toward his plan?A.Supportive.B.Disapproving.C.Optimistic.D.Unconcerned.(3)What did the author suggest his daughters do about their friends’ opinion?A.Argue against it.B.Take their advice.C.Think it over.D.Leave it alone.(4)What conclusion did the author draw after the eight-month car-free life?A.Life cannot go without a car.B.Life without a car is a little bit hard.C.His life gets improved without a car.D.A car-free life does not suit everyone.4、Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together, they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international competitions encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred (憎恨). There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident including the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by incidents caused mainly by smaller national contests. One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were sure that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their managerwas in great anger when he said, “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hocke y Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension (停赛) of the team for at least three years.Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).(1) According to the author, recently the Olympic Games have ________.A. created goodwill between the nationsB. brought about only false national prideC. showed little international friendshipD. put an end to misunderstanding and hatred(2) What does the underlined word “disallowed” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Permitted to pass.B. Considered as reasonable.C. Won by the other side.D. Refused to accept.(3) What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A. The current organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.B. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.C. A game should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.D. More and more athletes will compete for their own honor.5、Do you want to become an engineer? The new IMAX film Dream Big shows how engineering can improve people's lives. It teaches viewers how engineers use scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) skills to help the world. The film hits IMAX theaters nationwide on February 17 to celebrate Engineers Week. The film, taking place in locations like China, Dubai and Africa, tells the stories of engineers who try to come up with creative ideas to save energy and help people.Dream Big was directed by Greg MacGillivray who has 38 films under his belt, including some of the most successful films ever shown in IMAX theaters. How did MacGillivray get into the moviemaking business? “I grew up at the beach. My first movies were about surfing and the ocean. As time went on, I saw the changes in the ocean including pollution and overfishing. So I started making films about conservation of nature," he told TFK. Now, his films cover a variety of topics, from the natural world to human creation. One of the engineers in Dream Big is Angelica Hernandez. In high school, she was on a team that beat MIT, a university, in an underwater robotics competition. Today, the engineering work she does focuses on helping people use less energy and save money and resources. “I work with companies to promote energy effic iency with their commercial customers, so it's really trying to push forward all the measures that customers and high-energy users can apply,” she explains.“Engineering is such a good job—you make good money, travel around the world, solve amazing problems and help people," she says. The mission of Dream Big is to show people the good that engineers can do to the world. “That was the impulse of making this movie," MacGillivray explains. "We want to explain engineering in a way that will get the kids very excited about it."“Whoever and wherever you are,you can become an engineer,’’ he adds. “All you need is the creative spirit."(1)Who are the main roles of Dream Big?A.Businessmen.B.Engineers.C.Customers.D.Environmentalists.(2)What do MacGillivray and Angelica Hernandez have in common?A.They can make robots.B.They are good at filming.C.They have won awards in competitions.D.They care about environmental protection.(3)What is MacGillivray's purpose of his words in the last paragraph?A.To advise people to have big dreams.B.To promote his film Dream Big.C.To encourage people to be engineers.D.To share his success of Dream Big.(4)What can we infer from the text?A.Dream Big calls on people to learn from engineers.B.Angelica Hernandez will act in more films about engineers.C.Engineers have done a lot to help directors to develop IMAX films.D.Dream Big encourages people to make money by being engineers.6、 Everyone should be so lucky as to have a friend like Francia Raisa. On Thursday, singer and actress Selena Gomez, 25, used Instagram to explain why she was “laying low” this summer. She posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed with her friend Francia Raisa holding hands. She said she recently received a kidney transplant from her best friend because of complications(并发症) from lupus(狼疮), an autoimmune disease, which means it is the result of the immune system attacking normal tissue, including the kidneys, brain, heart and lungs.People with lupus may first experience tiredness, joint pain or a little bit of rash(皮疹) on their bodies and can go for a long time before their doctors realize it is more serious. Many people see two or four doctors before the real problem is picked up. According to Dr. Kyriakos Kirou, roughly a third to one-half of people with lupus develop kidney disease, and up to one in five of them will eventually need a transplant, sometimes because they weren’t treated with effective drugs to prevent the immune system from attacking the kidneys. Though Gomez said that she was “very well now,” she warned about the dangers of not taking medical diagnoses seriously, like she initially did.Her Instagram post also called attention to two major health topics: the need for living organ donators and the fact that Gomez represents three groups more likely to be diagnosed with lupus and lupus-related kidney disease. Nine out of 10 people diagnosed with lupus are women, and most develop the disease between the ages of15 to 4(4) And lupus is two to three times more common among women of color, including Hispanic women, according to the Lupus Foundation.Raisa is Latina, and Gomez’s father is of Mexican origin. While it’s not essential that the organ donator and receiver be of the same ethnicity, people who share a similar background sometimes are better matched, according to data from the United Network for Organ Sharing.(1)What can we learn about Francia Raisa?A.She is lucky.B.She is selfless.C.She is optimistic.D.She is encouraging.(2)What is lupus like at its early stage?A.It is deadly.B.It is hard to recognize.C.Its symptoms are psychological.D.It reminds you of a kidney disease.(3)What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.People with lupus.B.Colored women lupus patients.C.Lupus patients with kidney disease.D.Women between the ages of 15 to 4(4)(4)What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?A.Raisa and Gomez have a similar background.B.Gomez has fully recovered thanks to the kidney from Raisa.C.It is vital for the donator and receiver to be of the same race.D.The organ from the donator of the same race matches the receiver better答案1答案:(1)A; (2)D; (3)C; (4)B解析:(1)细节理解题。

毛额市鹌鹑阳光实验学校s2011-高考英语真题汇编日常生活类阅读(2012江苏)CMedical drugs sometimes cause more damage than they cure. One solution to this problem is to put the drugs inside a capsule, protecting them from the body—and the body from them—until they can be released at just the right spot. There are lots of ways to trigger(引发) this release, including changing temperature, acidity, and so on. But triggers can come with their own risks—burns, for example. Now, researchers in California have designed what could be a harmless trigger to date: shiningnear-infrared light (NIR,近红外线) on the drug in the capsule. The idea of using light to liberate the drug in the capsule isn't new. Researchers around the globe have developed polymers (聚合物) and other materials that begin to break down when they absorb cither ultraviolet (UV,紫外线) or visible light. But tissues also readily absorb UV and visible light, which means the drug release can be triggered only near the skin, where the light can reach the capsule. NIR light largely passes through tissues, so researchers have tried to use it as a trigger. But few compounds(化合物) a bsorb NIR well and go through chemical changes. That changed last year when Adah Almutairi, a chemist at the University of California, San Diego, reported that she and her colleagues had designed a polymer that breaks down when it absorbs NIR light. Their polymer used a commercially available NIR-absorbing group calledo-nitrobenzyl (ONB). When they catch the light, ONB groups fall off the polymer, leading to its breakdown. But ONB is only a so-so NIR absorber, and it could be poisonous to cells when it separates from the polymer. So Almutairi and her colleagues reported creating a new material for capsules that's even better. This one consists of a long chain of compounds called cresol groups linked in a polymer. Cresol contains reactive(易反应的) components that make it highly unstable in its polymeric form, a feature Almutairi and her colleagues use to their advantage. After polymerizing the cresols, they cap each reactive component with a light-absorbing compound called Bhc. When the Bhcs absorb NIR light, the reactive groups are exposed and break the long polymer into two short chains. Shining additional light continues this breakdown, potentially releasing any drugs in the capsule. What's more, Almutairi says, Bhc is 10 times better at absorbing NIR than is ONB and is not poisonous to cells.63. According to the passage, which of the following could be the best trigger?A. Temperature change.B. NIR light.C. Acidity change.D. UV light.64. Why in ONB unsatisfactory?A. It breaks down when it absorbs NIR light.B. It falls off the polymer and triggers drug release.C. It has not come onto the market up till now.D. I t is not effective enough and could be poisonous.65. Which word can be used to complete the following process of changes?A.

In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—not as a musician but as her page turner.“I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musicians don’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.“A lot of skills are needed for the job.You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.”Mr Titterton explained.Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for40minutes and require up to50page turns, including back turns for repeat passages.Silent onstage communication is key,and each pianist has their own style of“nodding”to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner. But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong.“I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,”Mr Titterton said,“Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.“My husband is the worst page turner,”she laughed.“He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say:‘Turn, turn!’“Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”24.What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner?A.Read music.B.Play the piano.C.Sing songs.D.Fix the instruments.25.Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage?A.Boring.B.Well-paid.C.Demanding.D.Dangerous.26.What does Titterton need to practise?A.Counting the pages.B.Recognizing the“nodding”.C.Catching falling objects.D.Performing in his own style.27.Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband“the worse page turner”?A.He has very poor eyesight.B.He ignores the audience.C.He has no interest in music.D.He forgets to do his job.2021年(上海卷)One early morning,I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. My interest was aroused only by the fact that the word“Poems”appeared in big,hot pink letters.“Is it good?”I asked her.“Yeah,”she answered.“There's one I really like and you'll like it,too.’I leaned forward.“‘Patty Poem,’”she read the title.Who is Patty?I wondered. The poem began:She never puts her toys away,Just leaves them scattered(散乱的)where they lay,…The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:When she grows and gathers poise(稳重),I'll miss her harum-scarum(莽撞的)noise,And look in vain(徒劳地)for scattered toys. And I’ll be sad.A terrible sorrow was hed over me.Whoever Patty was,she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.“It’syou, honey,”My mother said sadly. To my mother, the poem revealed a parent's affection when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the“she”in the poem was horror. It was my mama who would be sad.It was so terrible I burst out crying.“What's wrong?”my mother asked.“Oh Mama,”I cried.“I don't want to grow up ever!”She smiled.“Honey,it's okay. You're not growing up anytime soon. And when you do,I'll still love you, okay?”“Okay,”I was still weeping. My panic has gone. But I could not help thinking about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time,I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple,so simple I could plainly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful.I was now fascinated by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person's world.I have since fallen in love with other poems, but“Patty Poem”remains my poem. After all,“Patty Poem”gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.(1)Why was the writer attracted by the book Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again?A.It was a thick enough book.B.Something on its cover We all spoke the same language of passes and shots. We understood one another perfectly. As darkness came over the field and the match ended, the goal keeper,Juan, walked over to me and said in a matter-of-fact way,“In your home,do you have a moon too?”I was surprised. After I explained to Juan that yes,we did have a moon and yes,it was very similar to his,I felt a sort of awe(敬畏)at the possibilities that existed in his world. In Juan’s world, each village could have its own moon.In Juan’s world.the unknown and undiscovered was vast and marvelous. Anything was possible. In our society,we know that Earth has only one moon.We have looked at our planet from every angle and found all of the wildest things left to find.I can, from my computer at home, pull up satellite images of Juan’s village. There are no more continents and no more moons to search for, little left to discover. At least it seems that way.Yet,as I thought about Juan’s question,I was not sure how much more we could really rule out.I am,in part,an ant biologist,so my thoughts turned to what we know about insect life and I knew that much in the world of insects remains unknown. How much, though? How ignorant(无知的)are we?The question of what we know and do not know constantly bothered me.I began collecting newspaper articles about new species, new monkey, new spider…,and on and on they appear. My drawer quickly filled.I began a second drawer for more general discoveries:new cave system discovered with dozens of nameless species, four hundred species of bacteria found in the human stomach. The second drawer began to fill and as it did I wondered whether there were bigger discoveries out there, not just species, but life that depends on things thought to be useless, life even without DNA.I started a third drawer for these big discoveries. It fills more slowly, but all the same,it fills. In looking into the stories of biological discovery,I also began to find something else,a collection of scientists, usually brilliant occasionally half-mad,who made the discoveries. Those scientists very often see the same things that other scientists see,but they pay more attention to them, and they focus on them to the point of exhaustion(穷尽),and at the risk of the ridicule of their peers. In looking for the stories of discovery,I found the stories of these people and how their lives changed our view of the world. We are repeatedly willing to imagine we have found most of what is left to discover. We used to think that insects were the smallest organisms(生物),and that nothing lived deeper than six hundred meters.Yet,when something new turns up,more often than not,we do not even know its name.65.How did the author feel on his arrival in the Amazon?A.Out of place.B.Full of joy.C.Sleepy.D.Regretful.66.What made that Amazonian evening wonderful?A.He learned more about the local language.B.They had a nice conversation with each other.C.They understood each other while playing.D.He won the soccer game with the goal keeper.67.Why was the author surprised at Juan’s question about the moon?A.The question was too straightforward.B.Juan knew so little about the world.C.The author didn’t know how to answer.D.The author didn’t think Juan was sincere.68.What was the author’s initial purpose of collecting newspaper articles?A.To sort out what we have known.B.To deepen his research into Amazonians.C.To improve his reputation as a biologist.D.To learn more about local cultures.69.How did those brilliant scientists make great discoveries?A.They shifted their viewpoints frequently.B.They followed other scientists closely.C.They often criticized their fellow scientists.D.They conducted in-depth and close studies.70.What could be the most suitable title for the passage?A.The Possible and the Impossible.B.The Known and the Unknown.C.The Civilized and the Uncivilized.D.The Ignorant and the Intelligent.2020年(新高考全国I卷)Jenifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor’s degree.Mauer,of Edgar,Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of10children.Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费),because therewas no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own.She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids.Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree:Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.Through it all,she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. broken and having lost his mind.A few years later, still attracted to the country,he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that.Hence this book,Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea.It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator,a lovely24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers. This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand,Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana,he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American,as well as his language.Having said that,I did not know for a long time what I was looking for.It was not until I followed this feeling to itssource that I discovered I had a passion for writing. With some encouragement from my colleagues,I had one of my poems published. This bit of success, however, was the point where my problem began.Back in1978,I had to travel between three different campuses in the morning, teaching freshman composition.Afternoons I spent taking my daughter to her ballet and horse-riding lessons.I composed my lectures on the way,and that was all the thinking time I had. When I returned home, there was not enough of me left for writing after a full working day.As a way out,I decided to get up two hours before my usual time.My alarm was set for5:00 A.M.The first day I shut it off because I had placed it within arm’s reach. The second day I set two clocks, one on my night table, and one out in the hallway.I had to jump out of bed and run to silence it before my family was awoken. This was when my morning writing began.Since that first morning in1978,I have been following the habit to this day,not making or accepting many excuses for not writing.I wrote my poems in this manner for nearly ten years before my first book was published. When I decided to write a novel,I divided my two hours:the first for poetry, the second for fiction.Well or badly,I wrote at least two pages a day. This is how my novel,The Line of the Sun.was finished. If I had waited to have the time,I would still be waiting to write my novel. What I got out of getting up in the dark to work is the feeling that I am in control. For many people, the initial sense of urgency to create easily dies away because it requires making the tough decision:taking the time to create, stealing it from yourself if it’s the only way.36.What motivated the author to start her writing career?A.Her strong wish to share.B.Her keen interest in writing.C.Her urgent need to make a living.D.Her passionate desire for time to discipline her daughter.D.She was unsure about her writing skills.38.Why did the author place an alarm clock in the hallway?A.In case the clock in her room broke down.B.In case she failed to hear the ringing.C.To force herself out of bed.D.To wake up her family.39.How did the author manage to finish her novel?A.By sticking to writing every morning.B.By writing when her mind was most active.C.By drawing inspirations from classic novels.D.By reducing her teaching hours at school.40.What can we learn from the author’s success in her writing career?A.It is never too late to change your job.B.Imaginative ideas die away if not taken in time.C.A tight schedule is no excuse for lack of action.Daily life provides ideas for creative writing.2019年(江苏卷)The65-year-old Steve Goodwin was 高三英语关于家庭生活类话题阅读理解专项训练题一学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解The Marches were a happy family, Poverty, hard work, and even the fact that Father March was away with the Union armies could not down the spirits of Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy, and Marmee, as the March girls called their mother. The March sisters tried to be good but had their share of faults. Pretty Meg was often displeased with the schoolchildren she taught; boyish Jo was easy to become angry; golden-haired schoolgirl Amy liked to show up; but Beth, who kept the house, was loving and gentle always. The happy days passed and darkness came when a telegram arrived for Mrs. March. “Your husband is very ill,” it said, “come at once.” The girl tried to be brave when their mother left for the front. They waited and prayed. Little Beth got scarlet fever (猩红热) when she was taking care of the sick neighbor. She became very ill but began to recover by the time Marmee was back. When Father came home from the front and at that joyful Christmas dinner they were once more all together.Three years later the March girls had grown into young womanhood. Meg became Mrs. Brooke, and after a few family troubles got used to her new state happily. Jo had found pleasure in her literary efforts. Amy had grown into a young lady with a talent for design and an even greater one for society. But Beth had never fully regained her health, and her family watched her with love and anxiety.Amy was asked to go and stay in Europe with a relative of the Marches’. Jo went to New York and became successful in her writing and had the satisfaction of seeing her work published there. But at home the bitterest blow was yet to fall Beth had known for some time that she couldn’t live much longer to be with the family an d in the spring time she died.News came from Europe that Amy and Laurie, the grandson of a wealthy neighbor, had planned to be married soon. Now Jo became ever more successful in her writing and got married to Professor Bhaer and soon afterwards founded a school for boys. And so the little women had grown up and lived happily with their children, enjoying the harvest of love and goodness that they had devoted all their lives to.1.The members of the March family were Father March, Mrs. March and their .A. five daughtersB. four daughtersC. son and four daughtersD. son and five daughters2.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. The March FamilyB. The March ParentsC. The March GirlsD. The March Relatives3.It can be inferred from the passage that the March family had .A. more girls than boysB. wealthy neighborsC. both happiness and sadnessD. a lot of rich relativesThe first six months I was married, I truly wanted to scream and pull my hair out. My husband and I really had some all-out battles about his parents (regarding finances, where we would live, religious issues, etc.). Unfortunately, he was completely oblivious to how I felt or that anything was truly wrong. When I was going through all of this with my husband, I really felt so alone. I thought I was crazy/selfish to feel that way and often blamed myself. At first, I called him a Mama’s Boy and told him I felt like I was a low priority to him. This, of course, did not go over well... so I changed my direction.I’ve been married for three years now, and Jenna’s book played a big role in gaining my husband’s loyalty. I started out by making a decision that I would not berate (责怪) my husband for his family’s actions. After all, he can’t help what his relatives do, and to blame him for other people’s actions wouldn’t really be fair. Secondly, I made a resolution that I would NEVER let them create an argument or problem between my husband and me... this was really a groundbreaking moment for me. After all, it was in my power to control what items became issues in my marriage. I wouldn’t allow petty stuff his family did to upset our balance... that would just give them more power, control, and influence. This took a lot of time, but once my husband realized that I was taking the high road, he started listening to me more.I promised “for better or for worse” and I decided not to let my in-laws make it worse. As a new bride, I had no idea what I was in for in terms of family management, and even now I take time to re-read certain sections from Jenna’s book periodically. It is taking time and patience to gain my husband’s loyalty, and it’s an ongoing process —but I think it’s well wort h it.4.What can be learned from the first paragraph?A. Unworthy.Marjorie grew up with a sense of worthlessness. Again and again her father said she would never accomplish anything in life. He told her she was a loser and that anything she did was sure to end in failure. With these words constantly ringing in her ears she grew up looking for someone who would love her and see her as a person of worth. This led her into relationships that disappointed her, ending in pain yet, which was another proof that she was worthless and unlovable. Where does our sense of self-worth come from?It is true that the foundation for a person’s self-worth is laid in the home. Words that we hear in our home can build or tear down our worth. Encouraging words are words of life to us while words of criticism are words of death. Other people like teachers, friends and employers add to the collection of life-giving death words in a person’s heart. Over time a person begins to see themselves in the light of these words. In this situation can one develop a sense of worth? Feeling worthless is possibly the most obvious symptom of low self-esteem(自尊心). But it’s easy to overcome. However tough your childhood is, you can still choose to enrich the world every day simply by the way you interact with others and make caring decisions. Whether we contribute anything or not is a choice. Feeling worthless means that you’re not doing as well in the areas that matter to you and therefore you need to try to increase your self-esteem. To feel worthwhile, you’ll have to really work at it and never give up on yourself. All human beings are capable of adding value to society, including you. Thus there are no excuses for saying things like “I’m worthless, stupid, useless” because you have the choice not to be any of these things.16.From Paragraph 1, we can know that ________.A. Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.Recite and repeat in conversation. When you hear a person's name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.Ask the other person to recite and repeat. You can let other people help you remember their names. After you've been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you're making to learn their names.Admit you don't know.Admitting that you can't remember someone's name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say, "I'm working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?"Use associations.Link each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: "Vicki Cheng…… tall, black hair." To reinforce(加强) your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.Limit the number of new names you learn at one time. When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering everyone. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.Go early.Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. That's fewer names for you to remember. 高中英语阅读理解基础练习(日常生活类)(含答案)

高中阅读理解基础练习(日常生活类)(A)Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while. He had forgotten her name.Barbara hid her valuable things when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn’t remember where she’d put them.Perhaps you’ve had such experiences like these. Most people have. But most of them haven’t realized that they have a memory problem. Neither do they know a simple but important fact: Memory can be improved. If you’ll just accept that, the following will show you how.First, relax. If you are over worried about something, you’ll forget it. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won’t remember things. When you forget something, don’t follow up with saying like “Oh, my god! I always forget things!” Such words will have a bad result on you and your memory. But relaxing isn’t enough. To improve your memory, you’ll need to take an active role. Like your body, your memory can be made strong through exercise. Look for opportunities to exercise your memory. For example, if you’re learning a language, try to actively remember a lot of new words. If you don’t take notice of things actively, you won’t remember them. So, you can make pictures of what you see in your mind every day. For example, don’t just put your keys down! If you want to find them again, make a mind picture of the place where you’re putting them.1.The first two paragraphs just tell us.A.Barbara was a very rich person.B.examples of memory problemsC.Mark often forgot his friends’ names D.language problems of two persons 2.When you forget things, you _______.A.must be too careless B.shouldn’t take notice of the resultC.must accept the fact D.shouldn’t lose heart about your memory3.The word “opportunities” in the fifth paragraph means “_______.”A.places B.doctors.C.chances D.positions4.According to the passage, _____ can make your memory better.A.realizing your memory problems B.talking to your friendsC.doing sports every day D.making mind pictures of what you see5.The purpose of the passage is to help you ______.A.to introduce the guest B.to improve your memoryC.to remember new words D.to forget unhappy things(B)Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Sure, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend. No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them.Maybe we wound never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named in this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places. There is more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people who don’t have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.1. The first paragraph tells us_______A. what is the feeling of having no friendsB. how to communicate with friendsC. making friends is a need in people’s lifeD. we need to be alone in our life2. Seven others were so badly damaged(损坏)that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or torn roofs. One person was killed, seven were badly injured and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller injuries. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless as a result of the storm.A farmer, Mr. C.Y. Tan said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour. “ I was in the kitchen with my wife and children ,”he said, “when we heard a loud noise.A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. 英语日常生活类阅读试题答案及解析

英语日常生活类阅读试题答案及解析1. Not so long ago, the weary tourist would head off on holiday for the simple pleasures of recharging their batteries, topping up their tan and relaxing on a sun-lounger.Now, it seems, we are more likely to spend our time away catching up online with friends and acquaintances than gaze at the horizon or the contents of a good book.A new study has found that the average holidaymaker spends at least an hour a day of their down-time logging on to social media portals or checking other favourite websites. In fact, so obsessed are we with the online world that a new holiday annoyance – hotels and resorts charging for wi-fi access – has joined the more familiar worries that can have travellers reaching for complaint forms and their booking terms and conditions. The survey was conducted by accommodation group Thistle Hotels, which asked 2000 people about their regular holiday peeves. The top frustration was still the issue symbolised by the manic(不耐烦的)face of Basil Fawlty, with 69 per cent of those questioned saying rude hotel staff were their key bone of contention. Arriving at your resort to find that your room is still being cleaned, and is not ready, was the second most common concern – suggested by 45 per cent of respondees. But a sign of changing times is there at number three, with a very modern complaint – being forced to pay for wi-fi – causing grumbles with over a third of people (38 per cent).Other widespread holiday flashpoints included a poor selection of food at the resort buffet (37 per cent of those questioned) and a hotel being further from a destination’s attractions and restaurants than advertised (32 per cent). Our determination to be tweeting and liking even when we are supposed to be taking a break from the norm is also apparent in the survey’s list of what are considered to be the most important elements of a stay at a place in the sun.Over half of the respondees (51 per cent) said that free wi-fi is crucial to their enjoyment of their escape – ranking higher than a hotel having a swimming pool (49 per cent), being close to a destination’s attractions (41 per cent) and offering in-room TVs (37 per cent).“It’s crazy to think that, in 2014, hotel chains are stil l charging for wi-fi,” says Mike DeNoma of Thistle Hotels.“Our research shows that free wi-fi is very important to holidaymakers.”【1】What are people most interested in nowadays?A.spending time on line.B.gazing at the horizonC.enjoying the contents of a good book.D.relaxing on a sun-lounger.【答案】A【解析】细节理解题。

英语日常生活类阅读试题答案及解析

英语日常生活类阅读试题答案及解析

英语日常生活类阅读试题答案及解析1. My day began on a definitely sour note when I saw my six-year-old wrestling with a limb of my azalea(杜鹃花)bush. By the time I got outside, he’d broken it. “Can I take this to school today?” he asked. With a wave of my hand, I sent him off. I turned my back so he wouldn’t see the tears gathering in my eyes. The washing machine had leaked on my brand-new linoleum. If only my husband had just taken the time to fix it the night before when I asked him instead of playing checkers with Jonathan. It was days like this that made me want to quit. I just wanted to drive up to the mountains, hide in a cave, and never come out.Somehow I spent most of the day washing and drying clothes and thinking how love had disappeared from my life. As I finished hanging up the last of my husband’s shirts, I looked at the clock. 2:30. I was late. Jonathan’s class let out at 2:15 and I hurriedly drove to the school.I was out of breath by the time I knocked on the teacher’s door and peered through the glass. She rustled through the do or and took me aside. “I want to talk to you about Jonathan,” she said.I prepared myself for the worst. Nothing would have surprised me. “Did you know Jonathan brought flowers to school today?” she asked. I nodded, thinking about my favorite bush andtryi ng to hide the hurt in my eyes. “Let me tell you about yesterday,” the teacher insisted. “See that little girl?” I watched the bright-eyed child laugh and point to a colorful picture taped to the wall. I nodded.“Well, yesterday she was almost hysterical. Her mother and father are going through a nasty divorce. She told me she didn’t want to live, she wished she could die. I watched that little girl bury her face in her hands and say loud enough for the class to hear, ‘Nobody loves me.’ I did all I could to comfort her, but it only seemed to make matters worse.” “I thought you wanted to talk to me about Jonathan,” I said.“I do,” she said, touching the sleeve of my blouse. “Today your son walked straight over to that child. I watched him hand her some pretty pink flowers and whisper, ‘I love you.’“I felt my heart swell with pride for what my son had done. I smiled at the teacher. “Thank you,” I said, reaching for Jonathan’s hand, “you’ve made my day.”Later that evening, I began pulling weeds from around my azalea bush. As my mind wandered back to the love Jonathan showed the little girl, a biblical verse came to me: “...these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” While my son had put love into practice, I had only felt anger.I heard the familiar squeak of my husband’s brakes as he pulled into the drive. I snapped a small limb bristling with hot pink azaleas off the bush. I felt the seed of love that God planted in my family beginning to bloom once again in me. My husband’s e yes widened in surprise as I handed him the flowers. “I love you,” I said.【1】Why did the woman cry when seeing her son had broken the azalea bush?A.Because she could not tolerate the harm to it.B.Because she wanted to hand it to her husband.C.Because her son did not ask her for permission.D.Because it made her bad mood even worse.【答案】D【解析】细节题:从第一段的句子:My day began on a definitely sour note when I saw my six-year-old wrestling with a limb of my azalea(杜鹃花)bush. 可知作者这一天开始就很糟,儿子又将她的杜鹃花破坏了,所以她难过的哭了,选D。

Test 1Amazing Dad Builds Roller Coaster in BackyardChildren tend to ask for many things and often most of their parents would say “No”.Will Pemble is not among those parents and when his son asked if he could have a roller coaster in their backyard, the 50yearold dad made a decision, which his son would never forget. He said,“Yes.”The father made his son’s—and probably his own—dream come true after he was asked to build the roller coaster at their home in San Francisco following a trip to a local theme park. After spending around 3,500 on building materials and more than 300 hours, the cool dad finally completed a 55meterlong roller coaster.Mr.Pemble,an ecommerce professional, said,“We were just back from one of many amusement park trips and Lyle asked a simple question,‘Why don’t we build our own roller coaster,Dad?’”he recalled. He couldn’t think of a single good reason to say no to his 10yearold son and thus started the building task. The amazing father also wanted to show his children that anything is possible once you put your mind to it.Mr.Pemble himself is a physics enthusiast and he saw this as an opportunity to teach some physics and science to his kids.“Today, our backyard roller coaster is an unending source of excitement, challenge, education and connection,” the dad said.Since the word went out,he has had several requests from fans asking him to build them backyard roller coasters, said Mr.Pemble.Mr.Pemble loves the roller coaster because it has helped him bring three things he cherishes most together:physics, fun and family. When asked if building more rides in his future to earn his living, the proud dad said,“If I’m honest,I can’t think of a single good reason to say no so that could well happen in the future.“Our mission is purely to share our love of physics, family, and fun so one thing has just led to another. It’s amazing that all of this came from a kid asking one simple question and a dad saying yes.”Note:ecommerce [′iːkɒmзːs]n.电子商务Have a Try:1.The father started building the roller coaster for the following reasons EXCEPT . Hoffman had been begging his parents for an iPhone all year.So on Christmas morning he was excited to find the object of his desire under the tree, but there was a catch. The phone came with an 18point set of terms and conditions that he had to agree to before the phone could be his.And the agreement did not come from Apple or the phone provider;it was from his mother. His mom,Janell Hoffman, included a contract along with the iPhone that listed eighteen conditions or rules that Greg has to follow if he wants to keep it.Some of the rules limit the time he can use the phone:not after 7:30 p.m.,and he can’t take it to school. He also has to promise not to send “hurtful” text messages and emails to people; give his passwords to his parents, and always answer the phone when his mom or dad calls.Greg also has to use his own money to replace the phone if it’s broken or lost.Janell says the idea behind the contract is to teach her son to have a sense of responsibility and to learn to “coexist with technology, not be ruled by it”.She told him not to use this technology to lie, fool,or cheat another human being. Most of the terms do not just apply to the iPhone, but to life. She also advised him to,“Keep your eyes up.See the world happening around you.Stare out a window.Listen to the birds.Take a walk.Talk to a stranger.Wonder without googling.”“You are growing up in a fast and needy at soup kitchens or digging a well to provide an undeveloped village with fresh water. But there may be such a volunteer who wanders around with his head buried in his smartphone, which is not much better than having no volunteers at all. What qualities does a good volunteer need to possess?EmpathyFirst and foremost,a volunteer should care about the people—or animals—who need his help. This means the volunteer looks past cultural, religious and social differences and is only concerned that his efforts are making a positive impact on the lives of others. He must also respect the privacy of the people he helps.Lending a hand at a homeless shelter, for example, doesn’t give a volunteer the right to discuss the situations of the people who need the shelter outside of the volunteer group.PassionPassion is an important quality that a good volunteer should possess.Volunteering for his favorite cause isn’t just another way to spend a Saturday; it’s something he looks forward to doing, something he feels a need to do.His enthusiasm is so genuine that he tells other people about the work he does and encourages other people to get on board.A volunteer with this kind of passioncan be a oneperson advertising agency for a worthy cause.ProfessionalismA good volunteer is reliable and dependable. He treats volunteering with the same level of professionalism that he does his job,and he respects the rules that come with it.He does what he says he’s going to do and fights through obstacles to make it happen. He also doesn’t lower his level of quality output because he isn’t being paid for it; he puts his best effort forward because his reward is the difference he’s making.Team PlayerIt’s important for a volunteer to be a selfstarter, but it’s equally important for him to know how to workas part of a team.He knows how to collaborate with other volunteers with passions. No matter what differences in personality, upbringing or outlook, everyone involved is in it for the same purpose:to help those who are unable to help themselves.Notes:1.collaborate [kə′læbəreIt]v.合作,协作2.upbringing [′ʌpbrIŋIŋ]n.抚育;教养Have a Try:1.A good volunteer should possess the following 高三英语日常生活类阅读试题1. You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift severaltimes during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University ofNorth Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette(礼仪)is sort of strange,” Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, liftusers unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed. He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want –it’s your own little box.If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally(对角线地)acrossfrom each other to create distance. When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone. Why are we so awkward in lifts?“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at theFree University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed(理解)as threatening or str ange. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.【1】The main purpose of the article is to _______.A. share an interesting but awkward elevator rideB. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator etiquetteC. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevatorB. remind us not to behave strangely when in an elevator【答案】B【解析】B主旨题:根据The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪) is sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “They [elevators] are socially very interesti ng but often very awkward places.及短文的大意可知告诉我们一些电梯不成文的礼仪,故选B【2】 According to Gray, when people enter an elevator, they usually _______.A.turn around and greet one anotherB.look around or examine their phoneC.try to keep a distance from other peopleD.make eye contact with those in the elevator【答案】C【解析】C细节理解题。

高中英语日常生活类阅读理解练习Passage oneI was in my third year of teaching creative writing at a high school in New York, when one of my students,15year old Mikey, gave me a note from his mother .It explained his absence from class the day before.I had seen Mikey himself writing the note at his desk. Most parental excuse notes I received were penned by my students. If I were to deal with them,I'd be busy 24 hours a day.The forged excuse notes made a large pile, with writing that ranged from imaginative to crazy. The writers of these notes didn't realize that honest excuse notes were usually dull:“Peter was late because the alarm clock didn't go off.〞Isn't it remarkable,I thought, how the students complained and said it was hard putting 200 words together on any subjects? But when they produced excuse notes, they were brilliant. So one day I typed out a dozen excuse notes and gave them to my classes. I said,“They're supposed to be written by parents but actually they are not.True.Mikey?〞The students looked at me nervously.“Now,this will be the first class to study the art of the excuse note—the first class, ever,to practice writing them. You're so lucky to have a teacher like me who has taken your best writing and turned it into a subject worthy of study.〞Everyone smiled as I went on.“You used your imaginations. So try more now.Today I'd like you to write ‘An Excuse Note from Adam to God’ or ‘An Excuse Note from Eve to God’.〞Heads went down. Pens raced across paper .For the first time ever I saw students so careful in their writing that they had to be asked to go to lunch by their friends. The next day everyone had excuse notes.Heated discussions followed. The headmaster entered the classroom and walked up and down looking at papers, and then said,“I'd like you to see me in my office.〞When I stepped into his office,he came to shake my hand and said,“I just want to tell you that that lesson, that task whatever the hell you were doing, was great. Those kids were writing on the college level.Thank you.〞1.What did the author do with the students found dishonest?A.He reported them to the headmaster.B.He lectured them hard on honesty.C.He had them take notes before lunch.D.He helped improve their writing skills.2.The author found that compared with the true excuse notes the produced ones by the students were usually________.A.less impressive B.more imaginative C.worse written D.less convincing 3.The author had the students practice writing excuse notes so that the students could learn_____.A.the importance of being honest B.how to write excuse notes skillfullyC.the pleasure of creative writing D.how to be creative in writing4.What did the headmaster think of the author's way of teaching?A.Effective. B.Difficult. C.Misleading. D.Reasonable.Passage twoWhen you start your preparation late,it would give you two results.Firstly,it would increase your stress as you would have to complete so many things at a very short span of time.Secondly, owing to limited time, you would not be able to carry on with a healthy preparation and you would end up securing less marks in the examination. So,if you have registered for the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT),make sure that you start preparing ahead of time,so that you have enough time to correct your mistakes and at the same time, you can revise all the PCA T chapters well. When you plan for an early start, make sure that you stick to your decision. You should study and control your mind in such a way that you continue with your study, irrespective of(不考虑)your other works. Turn off your computer, television or mobile phone, when you sit to study. This would enable you to concentrate on your PCAT study and make your study session a stress-free one.Do not delay. We all know “Tomorrow never comes!〞So,do not spend your time dilly-dallying. Instead, finish your work within time.An early preparation would ensure that you give time to each of your subjects and improve your flaws. At the same time, you would get more time to practice PCAT sample papers. The more you practice, you would get time to correct your mistakes. Moreover, regular practice would enable you to know the pattern of the questions that you are going to encounter in your examination. While studying or practicing your PCAT papers,if you do not understand anything, make sure that you take help from the experts. In the end, make sure that you make a timetable of revision along with your study timetable. Revision would enable you to grasp your chapters and regain all that you have studied in your memory.1.If you want to gain a good mark in PCA T,you'd better________.A.have a good revision ahead of time B.avoid any chances of making mistakes C.learn something from your computer D.keep studying without playing all the time 2.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A.PCAT is very easy if you concentrate on it.B.If you work hard, you'll succeed someday.C.You can only enjoy yourself in your spare time.D.You should try to revise all the lessons as you have planned.3.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.A.study timetable and revision timetable are both importantB.you should pay more attention to your revision than studyC.study timetable is more important than revision timetableD.revision is just to regain what you have learned4.You can get over some difficulties and do better in your exam by ________.A.meeting your close friends B.doing sample papers regularlyC.doing exercises in the morning D.collecting all kinds of questionsPassage threeYou can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella,a lamp post with its own rainsensing umbrella. The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia.“Once,I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain.I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞篷) built into a street lamp,〞he said. The Lampbrella is a standardlooking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand.Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed,so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians.Besides,it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people.Being installed (安装) at 2 metres off the ground,it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production,Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.1.For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?A.To predict a heavy rain. Mom was thrown from the SUV and people found her on the side of the road.Once I saw my mom in the hospital,I knew she had a long road ahead of her.She had crushing injuries to her arm and shoulder, and her elbow was dislocated in three places, leaving it permanently bent.Although it took my mom a long time to physically recover from the accident,it was only a short time before my mom's positive spirit returned.Throughout her journey of recovery,my mother rarely complained.I could see the pain in her eyes during physical therapy, but never heard her question why this had happened to her.In fact,I remember one “role reversal〞where we both just had to laugh.Mother had lost a lot of weight during her hospital stay,so I bought her some new clothes.I had to dress her at first, but she challenged herself every day. Finally, when she was able to get dressed on her own,she looked at me in the mirror and started laughing. While she appreciated the clothes I had bought, she really hated the styles I had chosen for her and couldn't wait to go shopping on her own.I started laughing too;she had struggled for months to put on these clothes that she didn't even like!It reminded me of when I was in kindergarten and my mother made me wear dresses when I just wanted to wear pants. It was a funny role reversal for both of us and I understood how she felt.It took my mom two long years to gain back her strength and limited flexibility. Those few years were a traumatic time for our entire family.Mom had to overcome many challenges. But she found that strength of will and a sense of humor can get you through the toughest times, even when you don't think you have anything to smile about.1.The author presented the story by ________.A.asking drivers to pay attention while drivingB.reminding readers not to drive too fastC.explaining the result of driving after drinkingD.describing the scene of the accident2.By saying “a long road ahead of her〞,the author meant ________.A.it would take her mother a long time to recoverB.her mother could continue to live for a long timeC.her mother needed to walk every day to get betterD.her mother would pay a lot for the treatment3.The example of “role reversal〞is used to prove ________.A.her mother was particular about dressingB.her mother behaved like a girl in the kindergartenC.her mother could keep a positive attitudeD.her mother had an eye for beautiful clothes4.The best title for the passage may be________.A.Remain Clam When Death Drawing NearB.Keep Your Head Up in Case of TroubleC.Show Real Courage in Front of DangerD.Persist No Matter What Your Troubles ArePassage fiveAnger is not wrong. I know this statement seems shocking and challenges the wildly popular "Positive (积极正面的) Thinking" movement, which encourages us to "be full of positive energy" and "let go of our anger." However, the truth is that anger is just an emotion, and emotions are neither right nor wrong. We do not consciously(有意识地) choose them. We do, on the other hand, choose how we express our emotions and there are definitely right and wrong means ofexpression. The reason why we're often advised to "keep a lid on" our anger is that few people ever learn proper and positive ways to express anger. Instead, we are taught that "anger is wrong" and "you should keep your anger inside". But these messages don't change the fact that for most of us, anger exists. Many popular "Positive Thinking" programmes assume that success comes from "controlling our emotions" and that this can be done by simply repeating positive statements. Interestingly, these positive slogans (口号) often include a lot of negativity(消极负面性). "Only losers complain(抱怨)! I am a winner!" is one popular saying. The belief that those who disagree with us are losers is actually quite negative and is often used as an excuse for rude language and personal attacks. When it comes to dealing with negative situations in our daily lives, the ability to reasonably express anger or disagreement is an important skill. But we must use balanced and non-violent methods to express our dissatisfaction. Frustration (挫折) at unfair policies or treatment can certainly cause anger, but our anger can never be an excuse for abusing (虐待) family members, damaging schools, attacking doctors or most seriously, engaging in terrorism (恐惧主义).Instead of pretending that anger doesn't exist, we should start teaching appropriate (恰当的) means of dealing with anger. When we experience angry feelings in ourselves or others, what we should "let go of" is the silly idea that we can remove anger with just a few sweet words. Instead, we should find reasonable solutions to the causes of those angry feelings. We need to accept anger as a natural emotion but stop using it as an excuse for violent (暴力的)and destructive (破坏性的)behavior. Anger isn't wrong, but failure to deal with it appropriately is.1. What is the writer’s opinion about the “Positive Thinking 〞movement?A. It can help people control their negative feelings.B. It does not offer useful solutions for dealing with anger.C. Simply following it’s advice can improve people’s chances of success.D. Most of the people who participate in such programmes are dishonest.2. The underlined expression “ keep a lid on〞in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_______〞.A. freely expressB. always forgiveC. hold back and keep insideD. completely forget3. According to the writer, the best way to deal with anger is to ______.A. understand the cause of the problem and act appropriatelyB. ignore the cause and hope that the anger will go awayC. respond to the cause with positive energy and wordsD. let the anger out freely until you finally feel relaxed.4. What information is useful to add to the final paragraph?A. The names of some good books that talk about anger issues.B. The viewpoints of people who hold the opposite opinion to the writer.C. Different studies that provide some evidence supporting the writer’s beliefs.D. Some examples of how to deal with anger in a positive and beneficial way.Passage sixA few days ago we ––– that’s me and the husband ––– took a cab to the station. Chat with the driver fell to the wrong of cyclists, and the misunderstanding of the road rules. So far as the rules of the road go, there seems to be one basic principle: when you are driving a car you hate bikes, when you are riding a bike you hate cars (and I guess walkers hate everyone). There is an obvious difference of viewpoint built in here. It wasn’t until I started to drive a car (almost 20 years after I had first ridden a bike) that I actually realized that you could not see a cyclist at night without lights. In fact I now want to shout at late night cyclists without lights (like motorists once did at me): “ You’ll get killed, sunshine, I can’t see you.〞The problem is that cyclists do ride headlong into danger. It's not just not having lights. It’s biking on pavements (and so threatening to injure a load of innocent walkers in the process) and biking down one-way streets the wrong way.I admit that I do bike the wrong way down a one-way street sometimes. My feeble(软弱无力) defense is that I try always to do it as if I know I was doing wrong. That is slowly, with an apologetic look on the face, and ready to get off at any minute. I can’t bear the guys(一伙人) (usually, but not always it is guys) who do it as if they owned the place, and at high speed. So cyclists are not entirely innocent. But they are among the disadvantaged groups, because the bottom line is that a car or a lorry can kill a cyclist and not the other way around.1. When did the writer realize the danger for late night cyclists without lights?A. Not until she became a driver herself.B. Not until she had driven a car for 20 years.C. After she was shouted at by a motorist.D. After she was once knocked down by a group of guys.2. When the writer biked the wrong way down a one way street, she felt ________.A. angryB. guiltyC. innocentD. proud3. Which group is most likely to face danger according to the writer?A. driversB. passers-byC. cyclistsD. motorists4. What can we learn about the writer?A. She often took a cab with her husband.B. She has been a motorist for over 20 years.C. She used to ride a bike without lights at night.D. She often biked the wrong way down a one-way street.Passage sevenIsn’t it interesting how we expect others to behave in a certain way so we can feel good about ourselves? And then when people don't behave as we want them to, we feel so disappointed and angry ––– when really, most times, we’re not actually surprised at their actions? We just want those actions to be different ––– actions we’d be more comfortable with. This week I shared a friend a wonderful home-cooked meal and a bottle of wine. About the time we got to the freshly-baked cookies, the conversation turned to her somewhat crazy sister. I had to smile, just a little, since her sister-stories had had much the same theme for the last two decades. When her frustration was just about to peak over her sister’s latest unbelievably selfish act, I suggested she begin trying “The Law of Patient Acceptance.〞“How can I possibly accept her behavior?〞my friend asked. “Acceptance doesn’t necessarily mean tolerance,〞I shared. “It just means that you accept the person for who they are and you stop knocking yourself out tryingto change them.〞Everyone has these difficult people in their lives from time to time. “Think of it this way,〞I said. “If you were to go out and buy an ottoman(搁脚凳) today, thinking you were buying a chair, you’d be really angry that the ottoman was such a pathetic(差劲的) chair. But once you realize what you’re dealing with, once you accept the ottoman for what it is and you stop trying to turn it into a chair, your anger largely goes away.〞You have to accept people for who they are. Even when you’ve had high hopes that they might have been able to be someone else. “You can’t change people,〞my Mother always said. And she was right. The best we can do is to see people as clearly and objectively as possible. For they rarely change.1、According to the second paragraph, we can know that ________.A. the writer thinks her friend should talk about her sister that wayB. the writer’s friend often complains about her sisterC. the writer advises her friend to spend more time with her sisterD. the writer doesn’t think her friend’s sister is selfish2、By mentioning the example of buying an ottoman, the writer intends to explain ________.A. how “The Law of Patient Acceptance〞worksB. what the meaning of “The Law of Patient Acceptance〞isC. why greed and selfishness existD. when we should use “The Law of Patient Acceptance〞3. According to the writer, ________.A. we should accept others for who they areB. we should try to change othersC. we shouldn’t make friends with difficult peopleD. we shouldn’t have high hopes for ourselvesPassage eightWhen I stepped out the plane from Miami into Charlotte, North Carolina, airport for a connecting flight home, I immediately knew something was wrong. Lots of desperate people crowded the terminal. I quickly learned that flights headed to the Northeast were called off because of a storm. The earliest they could get us out of Charlotte was Tuesday. It was Friday. A gate agent stood on the counter and shouted, “Don’t ask us for help!We cannot help you! 〞I joined a crowd that ran from terminal to terminal in search of a flight out. Eventually, I found six strangers willing to rent a van with me. We drove through the night to Washington, where I took a train the rest of the way to Providence. The real problem, of course, is that incidents like this happen every day, to everyone who flies, more and more often. It really gets to me, though, because for eight years I was on the other side, as a flight attendant for Trans-World Airlines (TW A).I know the days are gone when attendants could be written up if we did not put the lines napkins with the TWA logo in the lower right-hand corner of the first-class diners’ trays. As are the days when there were three dinner options on flights from Boston to Los Angeles in economy class. When, once, stuck on a tarmac (机场停机坪)in Newark for four hours, a planeload of passengers got McDonald’s hamburgers and fries by thoughtfulness of the airline.I have experienced the decline of service along with the rest of the flying public. But Ibelieve everything will change little by little, because I remember the days when to fly was to soar (翱翔). The airlines, and their employees, took pride in how their passengers were treated. And I think the days are sure to come back one day in the near future.1. Many people crowded the terminal because______.A. they were ready to board on the planesB. something was wrong with the terminalC. the flights to the Northeast were canceledD. the gate agent wouldn’t help the passengers2. How did the writer get to Providence at last?A. By air.B. By van.C. By train.D. By underground.3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. Incidents happened to those who fly quite often.B. The writer used to be a flight attendant for Trans-World Airlines.C. Even a small mistake might cause complaints from passengers in the past.D. McDonald’s hamburgers and fries were among regular dinner options.4. What can be implied from the passage?A. The writer lived in Charlotte, North Carolina.B. The writer thought the service was not as good as it used to be.C. The writer with other passengers waited to be picked up patiently.D. Passengers would feel proud of how they were treated on the plane.Passage nineSometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your success. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positiveself-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!1. You need to build a positive self-image when you _________.A. dare to challenge yourselfB. feel it hard to change yourselfC. are unconfident of yourselfD. have a high opinion of yourself2. According to the passage, our self-images _________.A. have positive effectsB. are probably untrueC. are often changeableD. have different functions3. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?A. To keep a different image of others.B. To make your life successful.C. To understand your own world.D. To change the way you think.4. Who are the intended readers of the passage?A. Parents.B. Adolescents.C. Educators.D. People in general.Passage tenTeen Dating can be fun if you are aware of its pros and cons and are also aware of the ways to protect yourself. There are a couple of suggestions you would like to know before you are out for dating.Do not go out for dating with somebody whom you have seen only a few times and does not know much about him or her. Before leaving on a date, know the exact plans for the evening and make sure a parent or friend knows these plans and what time to expect you home. It passed a point opposite the Sun. This week, we tell about the planet’s surprising motion(运动)among the stars. For thousands of years, people have recognized that planets travel among the stars. The planets generally follow the path taken by the Sun through the sky. The Sun’s path is called the ecliptic. The groups of stars along the ecliptic are called the Zodiac. The motion of the planets can be confusing at times. Everyone knows the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. But this is caused by the turning motion of the Earth. Planets generally move from west to east. However, Mars will appear to move backward for about two months this year. This happens because the Earth is overtaking Mars on its way around the Sun. Mars began its backward, or westward, motion on May 11th, It will start moving eastward again on July 19th.Mars’ apparent motion has been a mystery to astronomers for hundreds of years. Most early theories of the solar system argued that the Sun and planets turned around the Earth. But the sudden westward motion of Mars presented a problem. Why would Mars move west for two months when it nears “opposition〞?In 1543, a Polish church worker named Nicolas Copernicus published a different theory. His theory said the Earth and planets moved around the Sun in perfectly circular orbits. Copernicus’ theory was simpler. But his Sun – centered sys tem still did not explain the observed motion of Mars very well. Finally, a German mathematician named Johannes Kepler published a complete theory of the motion of the planets in 1619. He had carefully studied the motion of Mars for many years.Johannes Kepler discovered that the planets do not move in circular orbits around the sun. Instead, they travel in flattened orbits called ellipses. Mars’ elliptical orbit is the cause of its unusual brightening this year and its apparent large size.During the next several weeks, you can see for yourself why the mysterious motion of Mars has caused so many people to wonder.1. From the passage we can learn that .A. the sun and planets generally travel westwardB. Kepler studied the orbit of the planets in 1619C. Copernicus’ theory well explained the motion of MarsD. the Earth’s turning motion causes the sun to rise in the east2. On July 19th Mars .A. will pass the “opposition〞B. appears to change its direction againC. will begin to move westwardD. appears to change its orbit again3. Why does Mars appear to be bigger and brighter when it passes “opposition〞?A. It is overtaking the earth.B. It follows the path of the sun.C. It moves in an elliptical orbit.D. It travels in a circular orbit.。

The writers of these notes didn't realize that honest excuse notes were usually dull:“Peter was late because the alarm clock didn't go off.”Isn't it remarkable,I thought, how the students complained and said it was hard putting 200 words together on any subjects? But when they produced excuse notes, they were brilliant. So one day I typed out a dozen excuse notes and gave them to my classes. I said,“They're supposed to be written by parents but actually they are not.True.Mikey?”The students looked at me nervously.“Now,this will be the first class to study the art of the excuse note—the first class, ever,to practice writing them. You're so lucky to have a teacher like me who has taken your best writing and turned it into a subject worthy of study.”Everyone smile d as I went on.“You used your imaginations. So try more now.Today I'd like you to write ‘An Excuse Note from Adam to God’ or ‘An Excuse Note from Eve to God’.”Heads went down. Pens raced across paper .For the first time ever I saw students so careful in their writing that they had to be asked to go to lunch by their friends. The next day everyone had excuse notes.Heated discussions followed. The headmaster entered the classroom and walked up and down looking at papers, and then said,“I'd like you to see me in my office.”When I stepped into his office,he came to shake my hand and said,“I just want to tell you that that lesson, that task whatever the hell you were doing, was great. Those kids were writing on the college level.Thank you.”1.What did the author do with the students found dishonest?A.He reported them to the headmaster.B.He lectured them hard on honesty.C.He had them take notes before lunch.D.He helped improve their writing skills.2.The author found that compared with the true excuse notes the produced ones by the students were usually________.A.less impressive B.more imaginative C.worse written D.less convincing 3.The author had the students practice writing excuse notes so that the students could learn_____.A.the importance of being honest B.how to write excuse notes skillfullyC.the pleasure of creative writing D.how to be creative in writing4.What did the headmaster think of the author's way of teaching?A.Effective. We all know “Tomorrow never comes!”So,do not spend your time dilly-dallying. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella,a lamp post with its own rainsensing umbrella. The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia.“Once,I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain.I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞篷) built into a street lamp,” he said. B.To check the weather forecast.C.To protect people from the rain. B.Its appearance.C.Its installation. D.Its safety.5.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The designer will open a company to promote his product.B.The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.C.The designer is confident that his creation is practical.D.The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.Passage fourMy mom's entire life changed in the matter of a few seconds. While driving home late one night,my parents' SUV was hit from behind by a drunk driver traveling 70 miles per hour.Dad was killed instantly. Mom was thrown from the SUV and people found her on the side of the road.Once I saw my mom in the hospital,I knew she had a long road ahead of her.She had crushing injuries to her arm and shoulder, and her elbow was dislocated in three places, leaving it permanently bent.Although it took my mom a long time to physically recover from the accident,it was only a short time before my mom's positive spirit returned.Throughout her journey of recovery,my mother rarely complained.I could see the pain in her eyes during physical therapy, but never heard her question why this had happened to her.In fact,I remember one “role reversal” where we both just had to laugh.Mother had lost a lot of weight during her hospital stay,so I bought her some new clothes.I had to dress her at first, but she challenged herself every day. But she found that strength of will and a sense of humor can get you through the toughest times, even when you don't think you have anything to smile about.1.The author presented the story by ________.A.asking drivers to pay attention while drivingB.reminding readers not to drive too fastC.explaining the result of driving after drinkingD.describing the scene of the accident2.By saying “a long road ahead of her”,the author meant ________.A.it would take her mother a long time to recoverB.her mother could continue to live for a long timeC.her mother needed to walk every day to get betterD.her mother would pay a lot for the treatment3.The example of “role reversal” is used to prove ________.A.her mother was particular about dressingB.her mother behaved like a girl in the kindergartenC.her mother could keep a positive attitudeD.her mother had an eye for beautiful clothes4.The best title for the passage may be________.A.Remain Clam When Death Drawing NearB.Keep Your Head Up in Case of TroubleC.Show Real Courage in Front of DangerD.Persist No Matter What Your Troubles ArePassage fiveAnger is not wrong. Frustration (挫折) at unfair policies or treatment can certainly cause anger, but our anger can never be an excuse for abusing (虐待) family members, damaging schools, attacking doctors or most seriously, engaging in terrorism (恐怖主义).Instead of pretending that anger doesn't exist, we should start teaching appropriate (恰当的) means of dealing with anger. What is the writer’s opinion about the “Positive Thinking ” movement?A. It can help people control their negative feelings.B. It does not offer useful solutions for dealing with anger.C. Simply following it’s advice can improve people’s chances of success.D. Most of the people who participate in such programmes are dishonest.2. The underlined expression “ keep a lid on” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_______”.A. freely expressB. always forgiveC. hold back and keep insideD. completely forget3. Some examples of how to deal with anger in a positive and beneficial way.Passage sixA few days ago we –––that’s me and the husband ––– took a cab to the station. Chat with thedriver fell to the wrong of cyclists, and the misunderstanding of the road rules. In fact I now want to shout at late night cyclists without lights (like motorists once did at me): “ You’ll get killed, sunshine, I can’t see you.”The problem is that cyc lists do ride headlong into danger. And then when people don't behave as we want them to, we feel so disappointed and angry –––when really, most times, we’re not actually surprised at their actions? We just want those actions to be different –––actions we’d be more comfortable with. This week I shared a friend a wonderful home-cooked meal and a bottle of wine. About the time we got to the freshly-baked cookies, the conversation turned to her somewhat crazy sister. I had to smile, just a little, since her sister-stories had had much the same theme for the last two decades. When her frustration was just about to peak over her sister’s latest unbel ievably selfish act, I suggested she begin trying “The Law of Patient Acceptance.” “How can I possibly accept her behavior?” my friend asked. “Acceptance doesn’t necessarily mean tolerance,” I shared. “It just means that you accept the person for who they are and you stop knocking yourself out trying to change them.”Everyone has these difficult people in their lives from time to time. “Think of it this way,”I said. “If you were to go out and buy an ottoman(搁脚凳) today, thinking you were buying a chair, you’d be really angry that the ottoman was such a pathetic(差劲的) chair. But once you realize what you’re dealing with, once you accept the ottoman for what it is and you stop trying to turn it into a chair, your anger largely goes away.”You have to acce pt people for who they are. Even when you’ve had high hopes that they might have been able to be someone else. “You can’t change people,” my Mother always said. And she was right. Lots of desperate people crowded the terminal. I quickly learned that flights headed to the Northeast were called off because of a storm. The earliest they could get us out of Charlotte was Tuesday. It was Friday. A gate agent stood on t he counter and shouted, “Don’t ask us for help!We cannot help you! ”I joined a crowd that ran from terminal to terminal in search of a flight out. But I believe everything will change little by little, because I remember the days when to fly was to soar(翱翔). The airlines, and their employees, took pride in how their passengers were treated. And I think the days are sure to come back one day in the near future.1. But som etimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This imag e includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down a ll of the great things you do every day. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the lat est trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Goodluck!1. For weeks, I've been thinking of bigger, deeper questions: How do we make it a habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use less? Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball-simple, universally available. We passed it, he tried to put it in his mouth, he tried bouncing it, rolling it, sitting on it, throwing it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch.
I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund(基金)(our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor)
