All we have really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions, and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. These sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations-the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfullyto our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar. (239words)21. The origin of language is ________________.A. a legend handed down from the pastB. a matter that is hidden or secretC. a question difficult to answerD. a problem not yet solved22. What is true about words?A. They are used to express feelings only.B. They can not be written down.C. They are simply sounds.D. They are mysterious.23. The real power of words lies in their _______________.A. propertiesB. characteristicsC. peculiarityD. representative function24. By “association”, the author means ________________.A. a special qualityB. a joining of ideas in the mindC. an appearance which is puzzlingD. a strange feature25. In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often, too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers who are ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. And large families can not be moved from place to place as smaller families can. So, at present people tend to have smaller families. In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consists only of a man and a woman. A small number of families may take child raising as their chief work. At the same time they may also raise other people's children, leaving those families free to move from job to job.(1)、The passage discusses influence of science and industry on Americanfamilies.A:TB:F答案: A(2)、Families of the past, the present and the future are described in thepassage.A:TB:F答案: A(3)、People no longer want to havechildren.A:TB:F答案: B(4)、Grandparents will take the chief responsibility of raising children in the future.A:TB:F答案: B(5)、Large families cannot fit in with a highly industrializedsociety.A:TB:F答案: A2、It has been reported that in colleges across the United States, the daytime serial drama known as the soap opera has suddenly become "in". James Watt had made the world's first widely used steam engine. He had no way of telling people exactly how powerful it was, for at that time there were no units for measuring power.Watt decided to find out how much work one strong horse could do in one minute. He called that unit one horsepower. With this unit he could measure the work his steam engine could do.He discovered that a horse could lift a 3300-pound weight 10 feet into the air on one minute. His engine could lift a 33-pound weight 100 feet in one minute.Because his engine did ten times as much work as the horse, Watt called it a ten horsepower engine.6.The passage says that Watt made the first widely used steam engine.A.TB.F答案:A7.Watt wanted to find a way to lift a 3300-pound weight.A.TB.F答案:B8.He made up a unit of measurement based on the strength of a horse.A.TB.F答案:A9.One horsepower would equal the weight of one horse.A.TB.F答案:B10.The possible title for this passage is The Origin of the Term "Horsepower".A.TB.F答案:AIn the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too farin advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.11.What is the main idea of this passage? ________A.It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B.The role of time in social life over the world.C.If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D.Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.答案:B12.What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _______A.A matter of work.B.A matter of life or death.C.You want to see him or her.D.You want to make an appointment with him or her.答案:B13.Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend in the U.S. A.?A.at 7:00 amB.at 4:00 pmC.at the midnightD.at 4 am答案:B14.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ________A.In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date.B.No misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures about the concept of time.C.It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in theU.S.A..D.Promptness is valued highly in American life.答案:D15.From the passage we can safely infer that _______A.it’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in day time.B.the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world.C.it makes no difference in the U.S. whether you are early or late for a business party.D.if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make some explanation.答案:B三、词汇与语法16.Some architectural designs are better than _________.A.othersB.anotherC.the otherD.the rest答案:A17.Measles(麻疹) ________ a long time to get over.A.spendB.spendsC.takeD.takes答案:D18.A pair of spectacles ________ what I need at the moment.A.isB.areC.hasD.have答案:A19.I often see ______ the road on his way home.A.he crossB.him crossC.him crossedD.he crossing答案:B20.____ she survived the accident is miracle.A.WhatB.ThatC.AsD.Which答案:B四、完型填空They were going to Fort Lauderdale-three boys and three girls-and when they __21__ the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine in paper bags dreaming __22__ golden beaches and sea tides as the gray, cold spring of New York vanished behind them.As the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice Vingo. There are thousands and thousands of different kinds of plants and animals. However, the world's forests are getting smaller all the time. We are cutting down the trees because we need wood, and we need more farmland. Some people say that there will not be any forests like these in 20 or 30 years. What will happen if they disappear? If we cut down our forests, a lot of plants and animals will disappear from the world. In a lot of places the new farmland will soon look like the old deserts. Crops will not grow there. It will not rain very often, and the weather will get very hot. Perhaps the climate of the world will change. This will be dangerous for everyone in the world. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one's own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one's free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight's (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.(1)、Which of the following statements is NOT true?_________A:People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.B:People who work in London prefer to live in the country.C:Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.D:Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.答案: B(2)、With the same money ________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.A:getting a small flat with a gardenB:having a small flat with a gardenC:renting a small flat without a gardenD:buying a small flat without a garden答案: C(3)、When the garden is in blossom, it means that one ________ has been rewarded.A:living in the country B: having spent time working in the gardenC: having a garden of his own D:having been digging, planting and watering答案: B(4)、People who think happiness lies in the town would feel that _______ if they had to live outside London.A:their life was meaningless B: their life was invaluableC:they didn't deserve a happy life D:they were not worthy of their happy life答案: A(5)、The underlined phrase get away from in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________.A:deal with B:do away withC:escape from D:prevent from答案: C三、词汇与语法1、If she wants to stay thin, she must make a _____ in her diet.A:change B:turn C:run D:go答案: A2、The manager will not _________ us to use his car.A:have B:let C:agree D:allow答案: D3、It's bad ________ for you to smoke in the public places where smoking is not allowed.A:behavior B:action C:manner D:movement答案: A4、There's lots of fruit _____ the tree. Our little cat is also ______ the tree.A: in;in B:on;on C:in;on D:on;in答案: D5、Tom was watching TV when someone______.A:comes B:come C:came D:has come答案: C四、完型填空1、It is always interesting to visit another country, especially for those who have never traveled a great deal. Custom has also governed the common practice in regard to its use. All the armed services have precise regulations on how to display the national flag. This may vary somewhat from the general rules. The national flag should be raised and lowered by hand. Do not raise the flag while it is folded. Unfold the flag first, and then hoist it quickly to the top of the flagpole. Lower it slowly and with dignity. Place no objects on or over the flag. Do not use the flag as part of a costume or athletic uniform. Do not print it upon cushions, handkerchiefs, paper napkins or boxes. A federal law provides that the trademark cannot be registered if it comprises the flag, or badgers of the US. When the flag is used to unveil a statue or monument, it shouldn't serve as a covering of the object to be unveiled. If it is displayed on such occasions, do not allow the flag to fall to the ground, but let it be carried high up in the air to form a feature of the ceremony. Take every precaution to prevent the flag from soiled. It should not be allowed to touch the ground or floor, nor to brush against objects.(1)、How do Americans ensure proper respect for the national flag? _________A:By making laws. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and thenadd new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is nota static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.(1)、Our long-term goals mean a lot _______.A:if we cannot reach solid short-term goals B:if we complete the short-term goalsC:if we have dreams of the future D:if we put forward some plans答案: B(2)、New short-term goals are built upon______.A:a daily basis B:your achievement in a weekC:current activities D:the goals that have been completed答案: D(3)、When we complete each step of our goals, ________.A:we will win final success B: we are overwhelmedC:we will build up our confidence to achieve successD:we should have strong desire for setting new goals答案: C(4)、What is the main idea of this passage? _______A:Life is a dynamic thing. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemasand theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight's (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.(1)、Which of the following statements is NOT true?_________A:People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.B:People who work in London prefer to live in the country.C:Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.D:Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.答案: B(2)、With the same money ________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.A:getting a small flat with a gardenB:having a small flat with a gardenC:renting a small flat without a gardenD:buying a small flat without a garden答案: C(3)、When the garden is in blossom, it means that one ________ has been rewarded.A:living in the countryB: having spent time working in the gardenC: having a garden of his ownD:having been digging, planting and watering答案: B(4)、People who think happiness lies in the town would feel that _______ if they had to live outside London. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.(1)、Our long-term goals mean a lot _______.A:if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsB:if we complete the short-term goalsC:if we have dreams of the futureD:if we put forward some plans答案: B(2)、New short-term goals are built upon______.A:a daily basisB:your achievement in a weekC:current activitiesD:the goals that have been completed答案: D(3)、When we complete each step of our goals, ________.A:we will win final successB: we are overwhelmedC:we will build up our confidence to achieve successD:we should have strong desire for setting new goals答案: C(4)、What is the main idea of this passage? _______A:Life is a dynamic thing.B:We should set up long-term goals.C:Different kinds of goals in life.D:The limitation of long-term goals.答案: C(5)、Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage? _______A:The long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without achieving short-term goals.B:The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.C:Life is a static thing, thus never allowing a long-term goal to limit us.D:We should often add new short-term goals to what have been completed.答案: C三、词汇与语法1、- It's a good idea. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage1There are stories about two U.S. presidents, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK. We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting. The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact, he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson, he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said. If he approved of a paper, he would write “all correct” on it. The problem was that he didn’t know how spell, so what he really wrote was “ol korekt”. After a while, he shortened that term to “OK”.The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born, Kinderhook, New York. Van Buren’s friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called “OK”.11. The author_______________.A. believes both of the storiesB. doesn’t believe a word of the storiesC. is not sure whether the stories are trueD. is telling the stories just for fun12. According to the passage, President Jackson________________.A. couldn’t draw up any documents at allB. didn’t like to read important papers by himselfC. often had his assistants sign documents for himD. wasn’t good at reading or spelling13. According to the first story, the term “OK”________________.A. was approved of by President JacksonB. was the title of some official documentsC. was first used by President JacksonD. was an old way to spell “all correct”14. According to the second story, the term “OK”______________.A. was the short way to say “Old Kinderhook Club”B. meant the place where President Van Buren was bornC. was the name of Van Buren’s clubD. was used to call Van Buren’s supporters in the election15. According to the second story, the term “OK” was first used____________.A. by Van BurenB. in a presidential electionC. to organize the Old Kinderhook ClubD. by the members of the “Old Kinderhook Club”Passage2Although the United States covers so much land and the land produces far more food than the present population needs, its people are by now almost entirely an urban society. Less than a tenth of the people are engaged in agriculture and forestry(林业), and most of the rest live in or around towns, small and large. Here the traditional picture is changing: every small town may still be very like other small towns, and the typical small town may represent a widely accepted view of the country, but most Americans do not live in small towns any more. Half the population now lives in some thirty metropolitan areas (large cities with their suburbs) of more than a million people each — a larger proportion than in Germany or England, let alone France. The statistics (统计) of urban and rural population should be treated with caution because so many people who live in areas classified as rural travel by car to work in a nearby town each day. As the rush to live out of town continues, rural areas within reach of towns are gradually filled with houses, so that it is hard to say at what moment a piece of country becomes a suburb. But more and more the typical American lives in a metropolitan rather than a small town environment.16. If now America has 250 million people, how many of them are engaged in agricultureand forestry ____________A. About 25 million.B. More than 25 million.C. Less than 25 million.D. Less than 225 million.17. Which of the following four countries has the smallest proportion of people living inmetropolitan areas _____________A. United States.B. Germany.C. France.D. England.18. What’s the meaning of the word “metropolitan” in the middle of the passage _________A. Of a large city with its suburbs.B. Of small and large towns.C. Of urban areas.D. Of rural areas.19. According to the passage, what can we learn about small towns in the United States_________A. Most small towns become gradually crowded.B. Small towns are still similar to each other.C. As the traditional picture is changing, towns are different.D. Small towns are turning into large cities.20. Why is it hard to say when a piece of country becomes a suburb __________A. Because they are the same.B. Because the rush takes place too quickly.C. Because the process is gradual.D. Because more and more Americans live in metropolitan areas.Passage3If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question. It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, thy may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations. For most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call’ remembered history’. Some of it has mow been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.21. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage ______A. “Remembered history”, compared with written history, is less reliable.B. Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of thehuman history.C. A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer manyquestions.D. Where there are no written records, there is no history.22. We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because _______ .A. there was nothing worth being written down at that timeB. the people there ignored the importance of keeping a recordC. the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fireD. the people there did not know how to write23. “Remembered history” refers to ___________ .A. history based on a person’s imaginationB. stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouthC. songs and dances about the most important eventsD. both B and C24. “Remembered history” is regarded as valuable only when __________ .A. it is written downB. no written account is availableC. it proves to be trueD. people are interested in it25. The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past than we donow if the ancient people had ___________ .A. kept a written record of every past eventB. not burnt their written records in warsC. told exact stories of the most important happeningsE.made more songs and dancesPassage 4‘Mum, can we go to McDonald’s, please?’ Some people might ask, ‘Where would we be today if we did not have fast food?’ and ‘Where would parents take their children out to eat?’ It has been reported that approximately 30% of meals consumed by families in the USA are eaten at one of the big chains like Burger King and Taco Bell, though probably none is more famous than McDonald’s. The distinctive ‘golden arch’ can now be seen in most major cities in the world. In 2002, McDonald’s had approximately 25,000 restaurants in over 120 countries and served 29 million people a day.Apparently, the secret of their success is a marketing strategy of ‘think global, act local’. McDonald’s learnt that if they adapted their ‘Mac’ meals to different cultures, it was more successful than having a standardised set of products that taste the same everywhere. So now, around 80% of McDonald’s restaurants are franchised to local people who serve food with a ‘local’ flavour. For example, in Hong Kong, food called ‘Shake Shake Fries’ and ‘Red BeanSunday’ can be found on the menu, while in Switzerland, ‘Vegi Macs’ are served. However, fast food is not popular with everyone. It is often called ‘junk’ food because it is said to be unhealthy and full of fat. Furthermore, many people claim that fast food chains produce enormous amounts of waste, while millions of people in developing countries go hungry. At the same time, more and more people no longer cook fresh food at home. ‘Convenience’ food is just too convenient! It is so easy for people with busy working lives to call into their local branch of Marks and Spencer, or some other supermarket chain, to buy ready-made meals on their way home from work. It is even easier to buy a ‘take-away’ from a local restaurant or pick up the phone and order a pizza to be delivered to your home.26. The ‘golden arch’ in the second paragraph refers to ______________.A) Burger King B) Taco Bell C) McDonald’s D) all the fast food restaurants27. According to the passage, McDonald’s is successful mainly because __________________.A)It has a standardized set of products all over the worldB)It is not ‘junk’ foodC)Its’ food is convenientD)It adapted its meals to different cultures.28. At the time France was in a crisis. The government was badly run and people’s lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried to control the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14, 1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792, to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792, the monarchy was abolished. In the same year, Louis was executed. A few months later his wife, Marie, also had her head cut off. The Revolution of France had frightened the other kings of Europe. Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the c ountry with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.11、Which of the following statements is NOT true?_________A、People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.B、People who work in London prefer to live in the country.C、Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.D、Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.参考答案:B解析:【答案】B【解析】推断题。
