What's the Mere Exposure Effect?Has it ever occurred to you that you started liking that song you used to hate because you had listened to it repeatedly? Have you ever noticed how the more time you spend with a person, the more pleasant he/she becomes? ___11___ Also known as the familiarity principle, this effect explains why, by repeatedly exposing ourselves to a new stimulus, our response to it becomes more positive.Robert Zajonc is one of the authors who studied this particular psychological effect. He proved the presence of this preference in the face of stimuli of a very diverse nature. Words, sounds, photographs of faces… ___12___Researchers conducted a study to test the influence of this effect on the liking for certain foods. For this, they gave a group of students several juices they didn't know until that moment. ___13___ When asked which ones they liked best, there was a clear tendency to judge those they drank the most as more positive.Fechner, a German psychologist, the father of some current psychophysical theories, offers an explanation for this effect. ___14___ But this "newness phobia" fades away as you repeatedly expose yourself to the no-longer-new stimuli. However, you must keep in mind that you can get bored if repeated exposure to the stimulus becomes excessive. ___15___ And if you watch the same movie every day, it'll lose its charm. This principle of familiarity is the foundation of many of your preferences, regardless of your greater or lesser taste for adventure and risk. The products you buy, the places you frequent, and the people you like can all be affected by this principle. Therefore, it's convenient to be aware of its influence on your mind.A. This is what the mere-exposure effect is about.B. The reason for the mere exposure effect is uncertain.C. Some tried them five times, others 10, and others 15D. People tend to react with fear or anxiety to new elements.E. If you eat the same thing every day, you'll end up hating it.F. In all cases, people seem to favor those most familiar to them.G. We chose the first. Up early; my husband and I and our three children couldn’t wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail. As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn’t help noticing that the other tourists weren’t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher, Arizona’s famous heat se emed to roast us. There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly. The next day, after we’d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon – by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world. We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed(翻转) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted, “STOP, TAKE US BACK!”When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I’d suggest a fourth buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic. That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness.66. To many property developers and local government officials, housing price in China is still low pared with many developed countries. However, the average housing price in the United States is only 8,000 yuan per square meter, while in China, it is even higher than in the United States. This shows that there are some bubbles in Chinese real estate market, the International Finance News reported.Although the average price of residential houses in the United States, after converted to Renminbi, is about 8,000 yuan per square meter, the houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses. If US property developers sell their houses according to the building area, then the housing price will be even lower than 8,000 yuan per square meter. In most big Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, houses are sold at a price even higher than those in the US.The high housing sales price in large cities in China proves that Chinese real estate market does have some bubbles. Moreover, Chinese houses can not be pared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities. Furthermore, it should be noted that American people’s average ine is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese people. How can the Chinese afford to buy a house which is even more expensive than that sold in US?At the beginning of xx, Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public. Now in order to reduce the high housing prices, the government can regulate the real estate market by raising tax on property industry and controlling the release of loans and lands to property developers. At the same time, the government should allow people to build more houses through various fund-raising channels, such as funds collected from buyers or raised by working units. By applying these multiple means, it is expected that the high housing prices can be lowered.70. According to the passage, what is the average housing price per square meter in China?A. 8000 yuanB. 10000 yuanC. 7000 yuanD. It’s not mentioned here71. Which of the following does NOT support the idea that the average housingprice in China is even higher than in the United States?A. Chinese houses can not be pared with houses in US in terms of buildingquality, environment and supporting facilities.B. American people’s average ine is several dozen times higher than thatof Chinese people.C. The houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chineseproperty developers do when they sell their houses.D. There are more people who need houses in China.72. What is the main idea of this passage?A. The housing price in China is so high that the government should dosomething useful to prevent it.B. There are some bubbles in Chinese real estate market.C. The average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States.D. Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public.73. How many measures are mentioned in the last paragraph in order to reduce the high housing prices?A. FourB. ThreeC. FiveD. TwoCSome futurologists have assumed that the vast increase of women in the workforce may portend (预示) a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The opposite of this concern is that the prospects of being a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to put off marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy es to life, the number of marriages also rises. The increase in divorce rates follows to the increase in women working outside the home. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact o f a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible(似是而非的). Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role i n ending a marriage. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability.Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union. Also, a major part of women’s inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.74. It is said in the passage that when the economy slides_____.A. men would choose working women as their marriage partnersB. more women would get married to seek financial securityC. even working women would worry about their marriagesD. more people would prefer to remain single for the time being75. If women find fulfillment through work outside the home,_____.A. they are more likely to dominate their marriage partnersB. their husbands are expected to do more houseworkC. their marriage ties can be strengthenedD. they tend to put their career before marriage76. One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that_____.A. they feel that they have been robbed of their freedomB. they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbandsC. they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectationsD. they tend to suspect their husbands’ loyalty to their marriage77. Which of the following statements can best summarize the authors’ view in the passage?A. The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country.B. Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle forreal equality in marriage.C. In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home andremain independentD. The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case.Section DDirections Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or plete the statements in the fewest possible words. ( no more than 10 words)When asked to point out one or two things that are most important to themselves, many put friends ahead of homes, jobs, cloth and cars.A true friendship carries a long history of experience that determines who we are and keeps us connected. It is a treasure we should protect. Unfortunately, the better friends you are, the more probably you’ll have disagreements. And the result can be what you don’t wan t —an end to the relationship. The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended. First, don’t let your pride get in your way. Most of us can forgive each other when differences are brought out in the open. Second, apologize when you’re wrong –even if you’ve been wronged. Over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mistakes. Sometimes, it may be best if the wronged person takes the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your friend a chance to admit that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your friend’s point of view. And finally, accept that friendships change as our needs and lifestyle change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that have an effect on all relationships. My suggestion Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture.78. What is likely to happen if you have disagreements with your friends?79. The author wrote the article mainly to tell us .80. The underlined word nurture probably means ________________.81. What causes the change of friendships?第II卷(共47分)I. AOne late summer evening, I stood in my father’s garden, watching my kids dig in the dirt with toy bulldozers(推土机). I had driven up to my parents’ house that afternoon feeling upset My husband was working day and night, and my twins hadn’t napped. I was one step away from a complete breakdown.“Come up,” my mom said, “Let’s rest for a while.”As the day of temporary relaxation drew to a close, I took a walk around Dad’s once-neat garden rows and noticed the tomato plants Dad had planted.“Roma tomatoes, the kind for sauce. Remember when your mom used to make sauce?” my father said. I hadn’t thought of it in years actually. It was a recipe passed from my Italian immigrant great-grandmother down to my grandmother and then my mother. And that’s where it had stopped. Though I liked cookin g, I didn’t want to waste much time on the dish. Why should I simmer(慢慢地煮)tomato sauce all day when I could make different kinds of dishes?Dad gave me an idea. “I’m going to make sauce,” I said. My father raised a skeptical eyebrow but grabbed some boxes and told the kids to start picking. The twins threw tomatoes like softballs to each other as the youngest begged to join me. Everyone was crying at one point and I almost gave up on my big plan. Yet something inside me fought back, a deep-seated fancy for finding the link between the recipe’s owner and me.At last, I successfully finished my sauce and it was approved by my parents. The efforts I made with those boxes of tomatoes gave me a sense of accomplishment. Each crank of the handle(柄), each slice of the knife, each stir of the pot was a prayer for comfort and confidence. Like most things that are worthwhile, the mess was part of the process.1. The author went to her parents ’house that afternoon to______.A. pay a visit to her parentsB. learn to cook tomato sauceC. let the kids play in her father’s gardenD. relieve herself from daily chores2. "This is not the time of year to cut down trees," I said to my husband, "They are full of birds' nests.Wait until fall, until the baby birds have flown away."The tree didn't seem like an urgent issue to me or my husband, but it was worrying our neighbor and she wanted it gone. So,with some unwillingness and a chainsaw(链锯),my husband and our sons headed to our neighbor's house early Saturday morning.About an hour later,I got a phone call from my 14-year-old son.He spoke in a trembling voice, which made me worried.I grabbed my keys, expecting to be told to meet my husband and sons at the emergency room. But no,everyone was safe.My son said that birds' nests had fallen out of the tree and some baby birds had been hurt. So,I grabbed an old towel and a laundry basket.I put the birds in the basket and headed for the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The people there are not astounded to see worried people with laundry baskets containing injured animals. They sighed at my story—they had heard many stories like this. They knew exactly how to help these birds.I was relieved that the birds would be fine, but I was still upset they had been needlessly traumatized(使受精神创伤).A lesson from this experience is that we need to look at the whole picture. We must behave in ways that help meet needs without causing harm to others,Our efforts to move through our lives with more gentleness and care may make a big difference for someone, whether it's a baby bird or a person.1.Why did the author disagree with cutting down the tree at first?______A. Ethanol production from cellulose has yet to meet expectations. However, this year could be the turning point. But Madhu Khanna explained, "Our cars may limit how much the industry can grow,Only a few models of automobiles can operate on high-ethanol fuel.Without more of them, there is only so much gas made from garbage that will sell."5.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?______A. Michael Terman,a professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University,US,told The New York Times. "There's been a fair bit of research since about the 1980s supporting light therapy (疗法)as being effective for seasonal kinds of depression," psychotherapist Rakhi Chand told The Guardian. But she also advised using this type of therapy under the guidance of a professional. While light therapy is the first recommended treatment for SAD,getting outside regularly canoffer other opportunities to sink in some light. You might want to retreat like the hibernating bear, but don't, "Norman E,Rosenthal, the psychiatrist(精神病学家)whose research team identified and named the disorder in the 1980s,told The New York Times. "Walking outside even 20 or 30 minutes each day could make a huge difference," he added Therefore, outdoor activities like skiing or hiking are highly recommended. Also, instead of giving into sugar longing,it is important to choose foods that are known to boost mood such as dark chocolate, nuts, oatmeal and berries, according to Egypt Today.Too nervous to enter winter?Remember,SAD is seasonal. If winter comes, can spring be too far behind?8.Which of the following is a SAD symptom?______A. As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week. Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large num bers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time orenergy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaperreporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the c hildren are a lot happier.Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.” 41.The passage tells us that .A .people seldom work long hours to make moneyB .people hardly buy more things than necessaryC .people are sure everything they own is in the right placeD .people realize there is more to life than just making money 42.When Daniel was a reporter he ___.
