我的一个朋友要买房，我周末陪她一路去看。

我看着最满意的一栋屋子有三个卧室，两个洗手间，地下室全都铺了硬木地板，新装修的厨房，还有一个一英亩大的花园。

可我那个朋友竟然因为不喜欢厨房的橱柜，就一口拒绝了。

这倒让我想起一个习惯用语，可以跟大家分享。

那就是：small potatoes.Small potatoe，小马铃薯，说一个人或是一件事是small potato意思就是无足轻重，微乎其微。

就比如我那个朋友，买屋子不看屋子的格局和设计，反而对厨房的抽屉，橱柜挑三拣四。

我以为，其实这些东西都是small potatoes，根本不重要。

不过话说回来，有时候，对一个人微乎其微的事情对另外一个来讲却是举足轻重的大事。

为了说明这一点，让咱们一路来听下面这个经济记者的报导。

例句-1：How much would you guess the United States annually spends on its agriculture and forests? $10 million? $1 billion? Actually, last year, it was about $20 billion. That might seem like a huge amount of money. But compared to the more than $610 billion dollars on both defense and Social Security, it's really small potatoes.这位记者说：你猜猜，美国每一年在农业和林业上的开支是多少？一万万？十亿？告知你吧，去年美国在农林业上的支出有大约两百亿美元。

这听上去好象是很大的一笔钱，但如果是跟花在国防和社会保障上的6100亿相较，那可真是微乎其微了。

提及来不好意思，我上周末在家还因为请客用饭买什么牌子的葡萄酒跟先生斗嘴。

而学习外语的人经常在理解这些习惯用语时会感到很困难。

这是因为你不可能从组成某个习惯用语的字面上来懂得它的意思。

比如,美国人经常说:“Give me a hand.”按照字面来理解, “give me hand”就是“给我一只手。

”可是,它的意思却是“帮我一下忙。

”另外一个例子是: “Foot the bill.”“Foot”的意思是“一只脚”,而“bill”在这儿的解释是“账单”。

“Foot the bill.”并不是把帐单踩在脚底下,而是付账的意思。

另外,有的时候,一个词汇有好几种解释。

就拿下面一句话来作例子吧:例句-1:“We arrived two hours late at the big blow-out for Charle’s birthday because our car had a blow-out.”这句话里第一个blow-out是指规模很大的聚会,第二个blow-out是指汽车的轮胎炸了。

整个句子的意思是:“由于我们车胎炸了,所以我们晚了两个小时才到达查理举行生日宴会的地方。

”还有一些习惯用语从字典上的意思来看是相同的,但是它们使用的场合却不同。

下面两个习惯用语就是很好的例子。

一个是“Lock, stock and barrel”,另外一个是:“Hook, line and sinker”。

Lock, stock and barrel和Hook, line and sinker都是全部的意思,可是用法却不同。

我们先来举一个Lock, stock and barrel的例子:例句-2:“Mr. Rockefeller bought the whole oil company lock, stock and barrel.”这句话的意思是:“洛克菲勒先生把整个石油公司买了下来”。

今天我们要讲的两个习惯用语是和鞋子、手套有关系的。

首先，我们要介绍的是“The shoe is on the other foot”。

The shoe is on the other foot的意思是：形势已经完全不同了。

下面这个例子就能够说明the shoe is on the other foot在日常会话中是怎么用的：例句-1: "Back in school we made fun of Jones because we thought he spent too much time studying instead of having fun. Now the shoe is on the other foot -- he's made lots of money and the rest of us are just barely making enough to feed our families."这句话翻成中文就是说：“以前在学校里念书的时候，我们老是笑话琼斯，认为他这个人老是念书，不会玩。

可是，现在情况就完全不同了。

他赚了不少钱，而我们这些人的收入只够维持家计而已。

”下面的一个例子是一个球迷在夸耀当地的棒球队：句-2: "For the last ten years the Tigers have been the worst team in the league: we've finished down at the bottom. But now the shoe is on the other foot: we have all these good young players and we're beating everybody else in the whole league."这句话的意思是：“我们这个地方的球队老虎队十年前是参加联赛的所有球队中最次的一个，比赛结果老是最后一名。

美国习惯用语

今天我们要讲的三个习惯用语都是在过去十年内先后出现的。

现在美国人在日常生活中经常用这几个习惯用语。

我们先来讲第一个： heads up。

Head就是头，是人身体上很重要的一部分。

在这个习惯用语里，head是多数，所以在head后面要加s, heads. Heads up就是在一件事发生前先告诉某人，或者是先警告某人。

比如说，纽约一家大公司在旧金山有个分公司。

分公司的经理听说纽约总部的总裁和总经理要来旧金山检查工作。

于是，旧金山分公司的经理就召开了一个职工会议，他对工作人员说：例句-1：I want to give you all a heads up that some big shots from New York will be here next Monday to see how we’re doing. So let’s make sure our desks are clean and that we show them what we’re do ing - we want to put on a good show for them.这位经理说：我要预先告诉你们，纽约的几位重要人物星期一要到这儿来检查我们的工作。

所以，我们一定要把桌子弄干净，让他们看看我们在做什么- 我们要做得好一点给他们看看。

这位经理一开始说：I want to give you all a heads up. A-heads-up，在heads up前面有一个不定冠词a，所以很明显，heads up在这里是用做一个名词。

******现在我们来讲第二个习惯用语：face time。

这两个单词都很简单，face就是脸，time就是时间。

那么，这两个词合在一起又是什么意思呢？ Face time的意思是面对面跟一个人谈话，因为你有求与他，例如你要他同意和你签订一个商业合同，或者是要他给你一份工作，或者其他任何他能帮你忙的事。
