The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the Earth, it has no time to flow down the spout.

We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We all waited, some patiently, others irritated, because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I get lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child come pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. Sometimes they die. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. Your need has been answered, and now it is time to move on.

He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve(勇气,神经) when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?""You don’t owe me anything," she replied, "Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.Years later, the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors werebaffled(阻碍,迷惑) . They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous was called in for theconsultation(咨询,磋商) . When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. Herecognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words,"Paid in full with one glass of milk."Dr. Howard KellyTears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently, "Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands." PlantsPlants pursue a never-ending quest for nourishment(食物,营养品) of the liquid and solar variety. Clearly, the very essence of life. But what can our obsession(痴迷,困扰) with plants teach us about our own personal journeys? My aunts, mom and grandma always talk about their plants when they get together. They trade cuttings, smuggling them over state lines to propagate(繁殖,增殖) at home. They discuss their plants like children or pets. They share tips. Compare progress. We turn plants into sentimental(感伤的) objects as we do with books and art, but with plants it’s different because they’re alive. They grow and change. You see photographs of your former apartment, and there’s that peace lily(百合花) , half itspresent size. It’s like looking at old family pictures: “Look how little you used to be!” Plants have a history and a life. That’s why they’re so hard to give up, even when you don’t love them anymore, even when you don’t have room for them. What are you supposed to do, just let them die? Impossible. When I had to move everything out of my house recently, I realized there were more little plants than I was willing to find places for in my new cramped(狭窄的,难懂的) quarters. I thought, it’s silly to be sentimental about these plants. I can replace them later if I want. Yet I just couldn’t give up the succulent(多汁的,多水分的) I kept alive during my first year of teaching. It sat on top of a microwave, in a tiny, dark, cold office space that was really a storage closet with a window. During the times I thought I might lo se my mind, I watched the plant’s health. It refused to wither. It stood hardy and strong, and occasionally sprung a tender new leaf. Sometimes I would forget to water it or take it home during vacations, but it withstood this neglect and stubbornly(顽固地,倔强地) lived on. This buoyed(支撑,鼓励) my spirit more than chocolate or pats on the back. Our adopted foliage(植物,叶子) can serve as a sort of bellwether(前导,领导者) for our lives. Most of us have gone through periods where we let the phone ring, the dishes pile up, and the houseplants shrivel(枯萎,褶皱) . Eventually, the pile ofbrittle(易碎的,脆弱的) leaves collecting beneath the ficus(无花果属) forces us to assess the state of our lives.Of course, because we have sentimentalized our plants, it’s tempting to read their lives for clues to our own. Once, when a relationship was dying, my African violet exploded with unseasonable purple flowers. Maybe, I thought, there’s hope. There was—for the violet. My stepmom visits a particular hemlock(铁杉) in a park near her home every New Year’s D ay. She walks circles around its trunk, one hand on the bark, releasing regrets from the old year and planning for the new one. Her own history and life is now intertwined with the hemlock’s, as year after year, the tree receives her hopes and ushers(招待,引导) them forth with fresh oxygen. “Here you go,” it says. “Here’s some more life.” I wish you were my little girlRecently, I heard a touching story which illustrates(阐明,说明) the power that words have to change a life -- a power that lies right in the hands of those reading this article. Mary had grown up knowing that she was different from the other kids, and she hated it. She was born with a cleft palate(腭裂) and had to bear the jokes andstares(凝视,注视) of cruel children who teased her non-stop about hermisshaped(畸形) lip, crooked(弯曲的,歪的) nose, and garbled(混乱的,篡改的)speech. With all the teasing, Mary grew up hating the fact that she was "different". She was convinced that no one, outside her family, could ever love her ... until she entered Mrs. Leonard's class.Mrs. Leonard had a warm smile, a round face, and shiny brown hair. While everyone in her class liked her, Mary came to love Mrs. Leonard. In the 1950's, it was common for teachers to give their children an annual hearing test. However, in Mary's case, in addition to her cleft palate, she was barely able to hear out of one ear. Determined not to let the other children have another "difference" to point out, she would cheat on the test each year. The "whisper test" was given by having a child walk to the classroom door, turn sideways, close one ear with a finger, and then repeat something which the teacher whispered. Maryturned her bad ear towards her teacher and pretended to cover her good ear. She knew that teachers would often say things like, "The sky is blue," or "What color are your shoes?" But not on that day. Surely, God put seven words in Mrs. Leonard's mouth that changed Mary's life forever. When the "Whisper test" came, Mary heard the words: "I wish you were my little girl."Dads, I wish there was some way that I could communicate to you the incredible blessing which affirming words impart to(告诉,透露) children. I wish, too, that you could sit in my office, when I counsel(劝告,建议) , and hear the terrible damage that individuals received from not hearing affirming words--particularly affirming words from a father. Elegy 9 by Ovid, translated by Christopher MarloweYet should I curse a god, if he but said,Live without love, so sweet ill is a maid. For when my loathing it of heat deprives me,I know not whether my mind's whirlwind drives me.Even as a headstrong courser bears away,His rider vainly striving him to stay,Or as a sudden gale thrusts into sea,The haven touching bark now near the lea,So wavering Cupid brings me back amain,And purple Love resumes his darts again.Strike boy, I offer thee my naked breast,Here thou hast strength, here thy right hand doth rest. Here of themselves thy shafts come, as if shot,Better then I their quiver knows them not.Hapless is he that all the night lies quiet and slumb'ring, thinks himself much blessed by it.Fool, what is sleep but image of cold death,Long shalt thou rest when Fates expire thy breath. But me let crafty damsels words deceive,Great joys by hope I inly shall conceive. Now let her flatter me, now chide me hard,Let me enjoy her oft, oft be debarr'd.Cupid by thee, Mars in great doubt doth trample,And thy step-father fights by thy example.Light art thou, and more windy then thy wings,Joys with uncertain faith thou tak'st and brings.Yet Love, if thou with thy fair mother hear ,Within my breast no desert empire bear.Subdue the wandring wenches to thy reign,So of both people shalt thou homage gain.高中英语必背经典美文篇三the price of a miracle奇迹的价格Tess was a precocious eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew.

Whether you handle a pick or a pen, a wheel-barrow or a set of books, digging ditches or editing a paper, ringing an auction bell or writing funny things, you must work. If you look around you will see the men who are the most able to live the rest of their days without work are the men who work the hardest. Don't be afraid of killing yourself with overwork. It is beyond your power to do that on the sunny side of thirty. They die sometimes, but it is because they quit work at six in the evening, and do not go home until two in the morning. It’s the interval that kills, my son. The work gives you an appetite for your meals; it lends solidity to your slumbers, it gives you a perfect and grateful appreciation of a holiday. There are young men who do not work, but the world is not proud of them. It does not know their names, even it simplyspeaks of them as “old So-and-So’s boy”. Nobody likes them; the great, busy world doesn’t know that they are there. So find out what you want to be and do, and take off your coat and make a dust in the world. The busier you are, the less harm you will be apt to get into, the sweeter will be your sleep, the brighter and happier your holidays, and the better satisfied will the world be with you.

Many of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some o f the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else. You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, orsweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes yo u as a person. The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.36. According to the author ___________ plays an important role in making friends.A. admitting your shortcomingsB. self criticismC. modestyD. confidence【答案】D【解析】推理判断题。

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside.Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn't easy, and there were many times I didn't feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself.I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren't there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,"She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been." My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults-and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn't be replaced.I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3 pressure to act in ways that I didn't like any more, and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can't be.

As the pace of modern life continues to increase, we are always feeling on the go from morning till night. And it is hard to slow down. Therefore, stress goes hand in hand with the life in a competitive society.Different people, however, think of stress quite differently. Some believe that stress is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. They are of the opinion that a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. Others argue that stress contributes to ones mental decline and hence endangers his health. According to them, relaxation, the opposite of stress, is essential for a healthy mind and body.Personally, Im in favor of the former view. I think it is impossible to avoid stress when one is entirely devoted to the career he pursues. In my opinion, it is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. 19As temperatures continue to drop in Northern China, many winter holiday resorts in the Jilin Province are seeing booming business. At the Chagan Lake, people are skiing, skating and motor racing on the frozen terrain. We came to love him and looked on him as our good friend. He is very strict not only with us but also with himself. He will forget his sadness or illness as soon as he stands in front of the blackboard. Sometimes he knocks the blackboard heavily to emphasize what he is saying. Sometimes he laughs or jumps on the platform. He is absorbed in teaching and forgets himself. All of us study physics actively and carefully because we have such a good teacher.Mr Lu is very old. 3Feeling lonely can make you sick. Doctors have long known that loneliness is associated with heart troubles, viral infections, and higher death rates. What they didn’t know is how this feeling causes illness. A study in the September issue of the online journal Genome Biology suggests that loneliness actually affects the very core of our bodies—our genes. In a small population of patients, researchers surveyed more than 20,000 genes using DNA skills to compare how the genes of lonely and nonlonely individuals express themselves in molecular〔分子〕 processes and, ultimately, in personal health. They found that gene expression is different at 209 sites in chronically lonely people and that many of those changes fit a pattern of elevated immune activation, inflammation〔炎症〕, and depressed response to infection. “We now have a molecular framework for understanding the relationship between social experience and physical health,〞explains the study’s lead author, Steve Cole. The study found that loneliness decreases the response of some body receptors, cutting off the immune control and anti-inflammatory effects of the stress-related hormone that also helps regulate the conversion of carbohydrates〔碳水化合物〕to energy. The depressed response of the stress-related hormone concurs with the known effects of loneliness and provides a potential target for treatment. This study—the first to link feelings with gene changes—is “in some sense groundbreaking,〞 says Emma Adam, an associate professor at Northwestern Uni versity. “It fills in the black box.〞According to John Cacioppo, an author of the study and a psychologist from the University of Chicago, the work suggests that loneliness is a warning sign, much like physical pain. “This very process of feeling bad beca use of disconnection contributes to what it means to be human,〞he says. “It makes us care for other people and want to reconnect when we’re disconnected.〞1. 美文阅读 1:生命的旅程Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special. Do not set your goals by what other people think important. Only you know what is best for you. Do not take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them, life is meaningless. Do not let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past nor for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all of the days of your life. Do not give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying. It is a fragile thread that binds us to each other. Do not be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Do not shut love out of your life by saying it is impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give love. The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly. In addition, the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Do not dismiss your dreams. To be without dreams is to be without hope. To be without hope is to be without purpose. Do not run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.人生的旅程 不要跟人攀比而妄自菲薄,我们的独特之处正在于与众不同。

不要按别人的 标准设定目标,只有你自己才明白什么最合适。

守护爱的最佳方式是给它装上翅膀。

不要摒弃梦想, 没有梦想就没有希望,没有希望就没有目标。

生活不是一 场赛跑,而是一次时时驻足观赏的旅行美文阅读 2 :永远的朋友"A friend walks in when the rest of the world walks out." A Forever Friend Sometimes in life, you find a special friend: someone who changes your life just by being part of it; someone who makes you laugh until you can't stop; someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world; someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. This is forever friendship. When you're down, and the world seems dark and empty, your forever friend lifts you up in spirits and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full. Your forever friend gets you through the hard times, the sad times, and the confused times. If you turn and walk away, your forever friend follows. If you lose your way, your forever friend guides you and cheers you on. Your forever friend holds your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay. And if you find such a friend, you feel happy and complete. Because you need not worry, you have a forever friend for life, and forever has no end.“别人都走开的时候,朋友仍与你在一起。

To be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say:"I will take an interest in this or that." Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human being may be divided into three classes: those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual laborer, tired out with a hard week's sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or businessman, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend.

Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very rich people who are as miserable as if they were living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems. Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness. Lottery winnings do not bring happiness. Gamble winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contribution towards others' happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort. If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill earned money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you will not be happy with it. You will think you are a base person. Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem. Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, "There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way." There is no use saying "Some day when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy." Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things to happen and depend on external circumstances of life to make you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.2美文阅读 5:信心成就一切Nothing succeeds lacks confidence. When you are truly and justifiably confident, it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet. It's important to believe in yourself. Believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will. The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them. Confidence is more than an attitude. It comes from knowing exactly where you are going and exactly how you are going to get there. It comes from acting with integrity and confidence. It comes from a strong sense of purpose. It comes from a strong commitment to take responsibility, rather than just letting life happen. One way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and to get a record of successful experiences behind you. Confidence is compassionate and understanding. It is not arrogant. Arrogance is born out of fear and insecurity, while confidence comes from strength and integrity. Confidence is not just believing you can do it. Confidence is knowing you can do it. Know that you are capable of accomplishing anything you want, and live your life with confidence. Anything can be achieved through focused, determined effort and self-confidence. If your life is not what you want it to be,you have the power to change it,and you must make the changes on a moment by moment basis. Live your priorities. Live with your goals and your plan of action. Live each moment with your priorities in mind. Act with your own purpose, and you will have the life you want.
