The answer has to lie in a group of people, organized in some way both intellectually and technologically. In the past this has usually been through books and articles. Some of the learning successes of the internet illustrate just how this can work in practice. A classic example is Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia created on a largely voluntary basis by contributors. The underlying mechanism of Wikipedia are technological; you can author an article by following hyperlinks—and the instructions. There are intellectual mechanisms built in, looking at the quality of what is submitted. This does not mean that the articles are equally good, or equal in quality to those encyclopedias created by expert, paid authors. However, there is no doubt that the service is a useful tool, and a fascinating demonstration of the power of distributed volunteer networks. A commercial contrast—which is also free—is the very rigorous Wolfram mathematics site, which has definitions and explanations of many key mathematical concepts. For students who use them with the same academic, critical approach they should apply to any source of information, such resources are useful tools, especially when supplemented by those of national organizations such as the Library of Congress, the National Science Foundation and other internationally recognized bodies. There are, of course, commercially available library services that offer electronic versions of printed media, such as journals, for both professional and academic groups, and there is already a fundamental feature of higher and professional education. Regardless of the medium through which they learn, people have to be critical users of information, but at the same time the information has to be appealing and valuable to the learner.(From Making Minds by Pal Kelley. 2008. Pp. 127-128)正确答案:目前限制网络学习的实际上是出版界:分析我们这个世界的优秀作品是由谁来创作的呢?答案就在一群智力和技术上都有条理的人士身上。

The five sessions cost employees $30, but if they stay off cigarettes for four months, the money will be refunded.Section B (20’,2’ for each)Directions: There are two passages following by several multiple choice questions. Choose the best answer for each question.Passage oneSome people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encouragesinternational brotherhood. Not only was the Olympics the scene of a tragedy incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests. One country received its second-place medals with visible indignation after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said: “This wasn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team for at least three years. The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the U.S.A. had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism.1.According to the author, recent Olympic Games have __________.A.created goodwill between the nationsB.bred only safe national prideC.barely showed any international friendshipD.led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred 2.What did the manager mean by saying “Hockey and the International Hockey Federationare finished”?A.His team would no longer take part in international games.B.Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions.C.There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.D.The International hockey Federation should be dissolved.3.The basketball example implied that __________.A.too much patriotism was shown in the incidentB.the announcement to let the match continue was wrongC.the appeal jury took too long in making the decisionD.the American team was right in rejecting the silver medals4.The author gives the two examples in paragraph 2 and 3 to show ___________.A.how national pride led to undesirable incidents in international gamesB.that sportsmen are more obedient than they used to beC.that competitiveness in the games discourage international friendshipD.that unfair decisions are common in the Olympic Games5.What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?A.The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.B.Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.C.Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.D.International contests can lead to misunderstanding between nations.Passage TwoIt is easier to negotiate initial salary requirement because once you are inside, the organizational constraints influence wage increases. One thing, however, is certain: your chances of getting the raise you feel you deserve are less if you don't at least ask for it. Men tend to ask for more, and they get more, and this holds true with other resources, not just pay increases. Consider Beth's story:I did not get what I wanted when I did not ask for it. We had cubicle offices and window offices. I sat in the cubicles with several male colleagues. One by one they were moved into window offices, while I remained in the cubicles, several males who were hired after me also went to offices. One in particular told me he was next in line for an office and that it had been part of his negotiations for the job. I guess they thought me content to stay in the cubicles since I did not voice my opinion either way.It would be nice if we all received automatic pay inc reases equal to our merit, but “nice”isn't a quality attributed to most organizations. If you feel you deserve a significant raise in pay, you'll probably have to ask for it.Performance is your best bargaining chip when you are seeking a raise. You must be able to demonstrate that you deserve a raise. Timing is also a good bargaining chip. If you can give your boss something he or she needs (a new client or a sizable contract, for example) just before merit pay decisions are being made, you are more likely to get the raise you want.Use information as a bargaining chip too. Find out what you are worth on the open market. What will someone else pay for your services?Go into the negotiations prepared to place your chips on the table at the appropriate time and prepared to use communication style to guide the direction of the interaction.6. According to the passage, before taking a job, a person should _____.A. demonstrate his capabilityB. give his boss a good impressionC. ask for as much money as he canD. ask for the salary he hopes to get7. What can be inferred from Beth’s story?A. Prejudice against women still exists in some organizations.B. If people want what they deserve, they have to ask for it.C. People should not be content with what they have got.D. People should be careful when negotiating for a job.8. We can learn from the passage that _____.A. Unfairness exists in salary increasesB. most people are overworked and underpaidC. one should avoid overstating one’s performanceD. most organizations give their staff automatic pay raises9. To get a pay raise, a person should _______.A. advertise himself on the job marketB. persuade his boss to sign a long-term contractC. try to get inside information about the organizationD. do something to impress his boss just before merit pay decisions10. To be successful in negotiations, one must _______.A. meet his boss at the appropriate timeB. arrive at the negotiation table punctuallyC. be good at influencing the outcome of the interactionD. be familiar with what the boss likes and dislikesPart Ⅳ. Cloze (10’,0.5’ for each)Choosing your life partner is a decision that requires very careful thought. Getting married is something you do not want to take 1 . Divorce 2 around world are increasing every year. And in some countries they are now as high as 50 3 ! If you don’t want to 4 divorced and heart-broken, take my advice to help you choose your perfect partner.First of all, you and your partner should be 5 . You need to know that you 6 a common purpose in life. You and your partner should have similar goals and ambitions that you can work toward achieving through your married life. It will be difficult to 7 your marriage together if your partner wants to stay at home and raise a large family, but you want to travel the world. You might have difficulty telling him that you want to have a life 8 having children.Next, ask yourself this question: Is my partner a person 9 whom I can share my deepest thoughts and feelings? In other words, can you be 10 honest and open with this person? Or do you sometimes feel shy and 11 telling her how you feel? If your situation is 12 , then you have probably found your true love. If, however, it is 13 , take your time before you marry this person.Marry a person who is polite and kind to others; he 14 polite and kind to you. In my experience, you can learn a lot about the true nature of a person by watching 15 he treats other people. If someone is kind and 16 to family and friends, he will do the same to you. If I were to make a choice between them, I would rather choose the latter Anyway, it's better to live than not to live at all."A lively discussion followed. A banker, who was then younger and more nervous than the lawyer, suddenly lost his temper and cried out, "It's a lie. I bet you two million .You wouldn't stick in a cell even for five years.""If you mean it," replied the young lawyer, "I betI'll stay there longer; make it fifteen instead of five.""Fifteen! Done!" cried the banker. "Gentleman, I bet you two millions.""Agreed. Two millions for my freedom," said the lawyer. So this wild, ridiculous bet came to pass. The banker could not hide his excitement During supper he said to the lawyer jokingly, "Come to your senses, young man, before it's too late. Two millions are nothing to me, but you stand to lose three or four of the best years of your life. I say three or four because you'll never stick it out any longer Don't forget that voluntary imprisonment is much harder to put up with than a enforced one. The idea that you have the right to free yourself any moment will poison your life in the cell. I pity you."And now the banker, pacing from comer to comer, recalled all this and asked himself, "Why did I make this bet? What's the good? The lawyer lost fifteen years of hi life and I threw away two millions. Will it convince people that capital punishment is worse or better than imprisonment for life? No, no! Rubbish! It is a very common belief that the problems of the population explosion are caused mainly by poor people living in poor countries who do not know enough to limit their reproduction. This is not true. The actual number of people in an area is not as important as the effect they have on nature. Developing countries do have an effect on their environment, but it is the populations of richer countries that have a far greater impact on the earth as a whole. For example, tropical forests are known to be essential to the balance of nature, yet we are destroying them at a great rate. They are being cleared not to benefit the natives of that country, but to satisfy the needs of rich countries. Central American forests are being destroyed for grassland to make pet food in the United States cheaper; in Papua slew Guinea, forests are destroyed to supply cheaper cardboard packaging for Japanese electronicproducts; in Burma and Thailand, forests have been destroyed to produce more attractive furniture in Singapore and Hong Kong. Therefore, a rich person living thousands of miles away may cause more tropical forest destruction than a poor person living in the forest itself. In short, it is everybody's duty to safeguard the future of mankind—not only through population control, but by being more aware of the effect his actions have on nature. Nature is both fragile and powerful. It is very easily destroyed; on the other hand, it can easily destroy its most dangerous enemy—man.31.According to the first paragraph, people usually believe that .A.poor people in poor countries contribute to the imbalance of natureB. rich people know how to protect the environment by taking actionsC. people in poor areas know a lot about the birth controlD. rich people in rich countries have done a lot to balance nature32. In the author's opinion, __.A. developing countries should be responsible for environmental problemsB. overpopulation in the world is created by the developed countriesC. rich countries exercise worse influence on environment than poor countriesD. all countries should bring the population growth under control33. The purpose of the second paragraph is mainly to illustrate __.A. how the forests in the U. S. are being destroyedB. which countries are the victims of the imbalance of natureC.what Japan has done to develop its own economyD. how South Asian countries make quality furniture34. Nature is very easily destroyed by __.A. rich peopleB. poor peopleC. natural disastersD. mankind35. The topic of the passage is that __.A.the control of population is essential to the development of a nationB.natural resources are important to the economic development of a countryC.awareness of the effects of man's actions is as important as population controlD. developed countries should do more to protect natural environment on the earth四、单词拼写题(每题 1 分,共30 分)请根据词类将下列汉语单词译成英语。

Reading comprehension (10×2.5')Direction:Read the following passages and choose the best answer to each question. Passage 1The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, self improvement.Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.41. According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because______A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilitiesB. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains singleC. he finds more fun in dating than in marriageD. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement42. Raising children, in the author’s opinion, is_______A. a moral dutyB. a rewarding taskC. a thankless jobD. a source of inevitable pain43. From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from______A. hatredB. misunderstandingC. prejudiceD. ignorance44. To understand what true happiness is one must_______A. have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetimeB. make every effort to liberate oneself from painC. put up with pain under all circumstancesD. be able to distinguish happiness from fun45. What is the author trying to tell us?A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.B. One must know how to attain happiness.C. It is important to make commitments.D. It is pain that leads to happiness.Passage TwoCulture is one of the most challenging elements of the international marketplace. This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by a set of dynamic variables: language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics, technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can belearned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture—one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald’s. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging. The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant; the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia or even blindness.Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know your adversary, know your audience, and know your customer.46. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. All international managers can learn culture.B. Business diversity is not necessary.C. Views differ on how to treat culture in business world.D. Most people do not know foreign culture well.47. According to the author, the model of Pepsi___________.A. is in line with the theories of the school advocating the business is business the world aroundB. is different from the model of McDonald’sC. shows the reverse of globalizationD. has converged cultural differences48. The two schools of thought__________.A. both propose that companies should tailor business approaches to individual culturesB. both advocate that different policies be set up in different countriesC. admit the existence of cultural diversity in business worldD. Both A and B49. This article is supposed to be most useful for those___________.A. who are interested in researching the topic of cultural diversityB. who have connections to more than one type of cultureC. who want to travel abroadD. who want to run business on International Scale50. According to Fortune, successful international companies__________.A. earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseasB. all have the quality of patienceC. will follow the overseas local culturesD. adopt the policy of internationalizationPart IV.
