Each unit has a section called Starting point. It is an easy activity to start us thinking about the topic of the unit. This unit is about your new lives here at university and it starts by asking you some questions about your feelings.
Remember the aim of the activity is to speak English. This is how not to do the activity.
A: I chose answer (c). B: Did you? I chose (b).
That is not going to help your English conversation much, is it? Here’s a better example for Question 1:
A: I chose (d). I have really enjoyed the first few days. My roommates are so nice and the courses seem great.
B: Yes, I agree. I also chose (d), but it’s funny — I really want to choose (a) and (d).
The video clip is about the experience of being a new student. The topic is introduced in Part 1. In Part 2 some students tell us about their feelings about their situation.
There are five short conversations. They are all on the topic of the start of a new term and illustrate the use of such phrases as: go over someone’s head, the general point, Do you think so?, feel at home , and I know what you mean. The news item is about government loans to university students. The conversation is about a school which does not believe in examinations and for entry sends universities examples of the students’ work and reports on their progress.
