Passage One For generations, the Nganyi people of western Kenya have served as rainmakers, helping local communities decide when best to prepare their land and sow their seeds. By observing subtle changes in nature that would be unnoticeable to most people-in air currents, the flowering and shedding of leaves of certain trees, the behaviour of ants, bird songs, etc-they have been able to interpret weather patterns and provide valuable advice. But the irregular weather patterns brought by climate change mean the rainmakers can no longer use those sighs to make their predictions. And they don’t have access to the technologies available to meteorologists (⽓象学家). “Climate change has come on so fast. People don’t know how to adapt or what to plant,”says Obedi Osoce, a traditional weatherman. “Our traditional crops are disappearing because they cannot handle the new conditions. We need new strategies to handle climate change.” Now a British-Canadian project si doing just that, linking the rainmakers with government meteorologists. The two groups get together each season and produce an agreed forecast to be spread using a variety of methods suited to communities where many cannot read or write-through ceremonies, public meetings and person-to person comma-kation. Both parties are pleased with the collaboration. “ I think the two sciences equally valid. We are marrying our energies to help people better,” says Mr. Onunga, a Nganyi community elder involved in the project. ‘The results have been surprisingly good-the community agreed that the forecast was accurate,” says Gilbert Ouma, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. “Through this project we hope to learn what it is that we can share together to live today and to adapt to tomorrow,”says Professor Laban Ogallo, leader of the Nganyi project. 36. Which of the following has been used by traditional Nganyi rainmakers in weather prediction?A.Plant seedsB.Dog harksC.Bird songsD.Ocean currents 37. What difficulty do local rainmakers face in making weather predictions? A. They cannot find an effective way to deliver messages. B. They lack modern technologies to cope with climate change. C. They cannot get financial support from the local government. D. They lack the facilities to stop traditional crops from disappearing. 38. How do people involved in the British-Canadian project feel about their cooperation?A. SatisfiedB.ConfusedC. HopefulD.Regretful 39. Which statement best expresses the main idea of the passage? A. A British-Canadian project has been carried out to solve farming problems. B. The Nganyi people have made weather forecasts by observing changes in nature. C. New technologies have replaced traditional methods in weather prediction in Kenya. D. Scientists and Kenyan rainmakers work together in a joint weather prediction project. Snowy owls are, in fact, the only white owl, and they are a highly sought after species for many birdwatchers to add to their life lists. Foods: Small mammals, birds, fish. Habitat and Migration: Snowy owls are found in far northern latitudes including tundra, a vast treeless frozen region in the Arctic. Their breeding grounds (繁殖地) are in the Arctic tundra, and they migrate south throughout Canada during the winter. In exceptionally server winters or when food supplies are searce, these owls can appear much further south than their normal range. While principally a North American bird, they can also migrate to the northern areas of Europe an Asia. Behaviour: Snowy owls, like all owls, are powerful animal bunters that are active mostly at night but can bunt and feed during the day, especially when food supplies are low. These owls will rest on the ground or on rocks, stumps and other low favorable points. Boy, I wish .…”He hesitated.Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.“I wish,”the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”“Oh yes, I’d love that.”After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?”the boy asked. He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard (⽆意中听到) our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?”I said yes.“Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”61. From the passage, we understand that ____________.A. the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in late thirtiesB. the author was like most people who were mostly receivers rather than giversC. the author received the same education as most people during his childhoodD. the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a process of getting62. According to the author, ______________.9A. giving means you will have less moneyB. the excitement of giving can bring you moneyC. you don’t have to be rich in order to giveD. when you give away money, you will be rich63. The author would make the suggestion to the storekeeper ______________.A. in writingB. in personC. in the window displayD. about the neighborhood64. When the author needed a post-office box, _______________.A. he had to put his name on a waiting listB. he wrote the postmaster a note of appreciationC. many people had applied for post-office boxes before himD. he asked the postmaster to make one for him65. In reply to the postmaster’s question, the author said _____________.A. it was the special deliveryB. it was the post-office boxC. it was the note of appreciation he wroteD. it was he who wrote him a letter a year agoPart V Translation (10%).66. 房⼦着⽕了,⾥⾯的⼈⾯临着死亡的危险。

1-5 CDBAD 6-10 DCABD 11-15 CDDAD【
Maria Vivas
Thomas Caraco, a biologist at the University of Rochester, recently studied yellow-eyed juncos over a three-day period to see how they altered their feeding habits in the presence of a trained Harris hawk. When Caraco released the bird, it swooped over the juncos, appearing to attack. The birds reacted by huddling together in a flock. And, despite the threat from above, they spent less time scanning and more time eating the food Caraco provided than they did when foraging individually. To see how the juncos would react if they had somewhere to hide, Caraco placed a Christmas tree in the feeding area. The birds became even freer. One negative note; when the number of birds in the flock increased beyond a certain point, they began to fight. The dominant juncos hogged the food and the meek birds lost out.41. What’s the best title for this passage?A. Flocking for SafetyB. The Story of JuncosC. Feeding HabitsD. The Research on JuncosPassage TwoOn hot, humid days you can hardly wait until you get to an air—conditioned room. Air conditioning is a method of changing the condition of the air from what it is to what it should be in order to improve your comfort and health. The machinery for doing this is complicated, but the principles of air conditioning are simple. A fan draws in the air from outside the building. The air is full of dust which may affect your health. Therefore, it is first forced through fine screens which catch the dust and filter it out of the air. It cools the air to a temperature that may suit you. The air still contains a proportion of moisture. Too much moisture makes you uncomfortable. Too little makes your nose and throat feel dry. The conditioner adjusts the air to the right proportion of moisture, taking out extra moisture or adding some if there is not enough. The air in your room, too, passes again and again through the conditioner, and in a short time the temperature, the amount of moisture and purity are just right.46. I mean, isn’t flying what reindeer are famous for?”“I’m afraid that I’ve always had a sensitive(敏感的) stomach when it comes to flying,” replied Ralph. “ But everyone expected me to pull Santa’s sled, so when it was my turn I gave it a try. For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. The MagicianThe revolution that Steve Jobs led is only just beginningWhen it came to putting on a show, nobody else in the computer industry, or any other industry for that matter, could match Steve Jobs. His product launches, at which he would stand alone on a black stage and produce as if by magic an “incredible” new electronic gadget (小器具)in front of an amazed crowd, were the performances of a master showman. All computers do is fetch and work with numbers, he once explained, but do it fast enough and “the results appear to be magic”. Mr Jobs, who died recently aged 56, spent his life packaging that magic into elegantly designed, easy-to-use products. The reaction to his death, with people leaving candles and flowers outside Apple stores and politicians singing praises on the internet, is proof that Mr Jobs had become something much more significant than just a clever money-maker. He stood out in three ways-as a technologist, as a corporate (公司的)leader and as somebody who was able to make people love what had previously been impersonal, functional gadgets. Strangely, it is this last quality that may have the deepest effect on the way people live. The era of personal technology is in many ways just beginning. As a technologist, Mr Jobs was different because he was not an engineer-and that was his great strength. Instead he was keenly interested in product design and aesthetics (美学), and in making advanced technology simple to use. He repeatedly took an existing but half-formed idea-the mouse-driven computer, the digital music player, the smartphone, the tablet computer(平板电脑)-and showed the rest of the industry how to do it properly. Rival firms competed with each other to follow where he led. In the process he brought about great changes in computing, music, telecoms and the news business that were painful for existing firms but welcomed by millions of consumers.Within the wider business world, a man who liked to see himself as a hippy (嬉皮士), permanently in revolt against big companies, ended up being hailed by many of those corporate giants as one of the greatest chief executives of his time. That was partly due to his talents: showmanship, strategic vision, an astonishing attention to detail and a dictatorial management style which many bosses must have envied. But most of all it was the extraordinary trajectory (轨迹)of his life. His fall from grace in the 1980s, followed by his return to Apple in 1996 after a period in the wilderness, is an inspiration to any businessperson whose career has taken a turn for the worse. The way in which Mr Jobs revived the failing company he had co-founded and turned it into the world’s biggest tech firm (bigger even than Bill Gates’s Microsoft, the company that had outsmarted Apple so dramatically in the 1980s), sounds like something from a Hollywood movie. But what was perhaps most astonishing about Mr Jobs was the absolute loyalty he managed to inspire in customers. Many Apple users feel themselves to be part of a community, with Mr Jobs as its leader. And there was indeed a personal link. Apple’s products were designed to accord with the boss’s tastes and to meet his extremely high standards. Every iPhone or MacBook has his fingerprints all over it. His great achievement was to combine an emotional spark with computer technology, and make the resulting product feel personal. And that is what put Mr Jobs on the right side of history, as technological innovation (创新)has moved into consumer electronics over the past decade. As our special report in t his issue (printed before Mr Jobs’s death) explains, innovation used to spill over from military and corporate laboratories to the consumer market, but lately this process has gone into reverse. Many people’s homes now have more powerful, and more flexible, devices than their offices do; consumer gadgets and online services are smarter and easier to use than most companies’ systems. Familiar consumer products are being adopted by businesses, government and the armed forces. Companies are employing in-house versions of Facebook and creating their own “app stores” to deliver software to employees. Doctors use tablet computers for their work in hospitals. Meanwhile, the number of consumers hungry for such gadgets continues to swell. Apple’s products are now bei ng snapped up in Delhi and Dalian just as in Dublin and Dallas.Mr Jobs had a reputation as a control freak (怪人), and his critics complained that the products and systems he designed were closed and inflexible, in the name of greater ease of use. Yet he also empowered millions of people by giving them access to cutting-edge technology. His insistence on putting users first, and focusing on elegance and simplicity, has become deep-rooted in his own company, and is spreading to rival firms too. It is no longer just at Apple that designers ask: “What would Steve Jobs do?”The gap between Apple and other tech firms is now likely to narrow. This week’s announcement of a new iPhone by a management team led by Tim Cook, who replaced Mr Jobs as chief executive in August, was generally regarded as competent but uninspiring. Without Mr Jobs to shower his star dust on the event, it felt like just another product launch from just another technology firm. At the recent unveiling of a tablet computer by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, whose company is doing the best job of following Apple’s lead in combining hardware, software, content and services in an easy-to-use bundle, there were several attacks at Apple. But by doing his best to imitate Mr Jobs, Mr Bezos also flattered (抬举)him. With Mr Jobs gone, Apple is just one of many technology firms trying to arouse his uncontrollable spirit in new products.Mr Jobs was said by an engineer in the early years of Apple to emit a “reality distortion (扭曲)field”, such were his powers of persuasion. But in the end he created a reality of his own, channeling the magic of computing into products that reshaped entire industries. The man who said in his youth that he wanted to “put a ding in the universe” did just that.注意:此部分试题请在答题卡1上作答。

2012年12月大学英语四级真题试卷(第2套)(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. Writing 2. Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) 3. Listening Comprehension 4. Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) 5. Cloze 8. TranslationPart I Writing (30 minutes)1.For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Education Pays based on the statistics provided in the chart below (Unemployment rate in 2010). Please give a brief description of the chart first and then make comments on it. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Education Pays正确答案:Education Pays The bar chart given by US Bureau of Labor Statistics reflects the unemployment rate in 2010 among people with different educational background. From these statistics, it can be seen that the higher degree one possesses, the less likely he is to be unemployed. Generally speaking, two factors have contributed to this phenomenon. For one thing, the advancement of technology and the adjustment of industrial structure lead to a dramatic demand of workforces with high educational degrees. Therefore, it is natural for people with higher educational degrees to enjoy a more steady and well-paid job. For another, those with lower educational degrees tend to be dismissed and substituted more frequently because their jobs usually feature low technologies which can be done by anybody. As far as I am concerned, education is always a worthy investment. So, as individuals, first we should attach great importance to education. Second, the government and authorities should adopt relevant measures to ensure the equity of education. Only in this way can more people get the tickets to a much more comfortable life.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions attached to the passage. Sugar poses enough health risks that it should be considered a controlled substance just like alcohol and tobacco, argue a team of researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In an opinion piece called “The Toxic (毒性的) Truth About Sugar”published Feb. 1 in Nature, Robert Lustig, Laura Schmidt and Claire Brindis argue that it’s wrong to consider sugar just “empty calories. “They write:“ There is nothing empty about these calories. A growing body of scientific evidence is showing that fructose (果糖) can trigger processes that lead to liver toxicity and a host of other chronic diseases. A little is not a problem, but a lot kills—slowly. “Almost everyone’s heard of—or personally experienced—the well-known sugar high, so perhaps the comparison between sugar and alcohol or tobacco shouldn’t come as a surprise. But it’s doubtful that Americans will look favorably upon regulating their favorite vice. We’re a nation that’s sweet on sugar: the average US adult downs 22 teaspoons of sugar a day, according to the American Heart Association, and surveys have found that teens swallow 34 teaspoons. To counter our consumption, the authors advocate taxing sugary foods and controlling sales to kids under 17. Already, 17% of US children and teens are obese (肥胖的), and across the world the sugar intake (摄入) has increased three times in the past 50 years. The increase has helped create a global obesity plague that contributes to 35 million annual deaths worldwide from noninfectious diseases including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Linda Matzigkeit, a senior vice president at Children’s Healthcare, said “ We have to do something about this or our country is in danger. It’s not good if your state has the second-highest obesity rate. Obese children turn into obese adults. ““ There are good calories and bad calories, just as there are good fats and bad fats, good amino acids (氨基酸) and bad amino acids,” Lustig, director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health program at UCSF, said in a statement. “But sugar is toxic beyond its calories. “The food industry tries to imply that “a calorie is a calorie,” says Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University. “But this and other research suggests there is something different about sugar,”says Brownell. The UCSF report emphasizes the metabolic (新陈代谢的) effects of sugar. Excess sugar can alter metabolism, raise blood pressure, affect the signaling of hormones and damage the liver—outcomes that sound suspiciously similar to what can happen after a person drinks too much alcohol. Schmidt, co-chair of UCSF’s Community Engagement and Health Policy program, noted on CNN: “ When you think about it, this actually makes a lot of sense. Alcohol, after all, is simply made from sugar. Where does vodka come from? Sugar. “But there are also other areas of impact that researchers have investigated: the effect of sugar on the brain and how liquid calories are interpreted differently by the body than solids. Research has suggested that sugar activates the same reward pathways in the brain as traditional drugs of abuse like morphine or heroin. No one is claiming the effect of sugar is quite that strong, but, says Brownell, “ it helps confirm what people tell you sometimes, that they hunger for sugar and have withdrawal symptoms when they stop eating it. “There’s also something particularly tricky about sugary drinks. “ When calories come in liquids, the body doesn’t feel as full,” says Brownell. “People are getting more of their calories than ever before from sugared drinks. “Other countries, including France, Greece and Denmark, impose soda taxes, and the concept is being considered in at least 20 US cities and states. Last summer, Philadelphia came close to passing a 2-cents-per-ounce soda tax. The Rudd Center has been a strong advocate of a more modest 1 -cent-per-ounce tax. But at least one study, from 2010, has raised doubts that soda taxes would result in significant weight loss:apparently people who are determined to eat—and drink—unhealthily will find ways to do it. Teens—no surprise—are good at finding ways to get the things they can’t have, so state policies banning all sugar-sweetened drinks from public schools and providing only water, milk or 100% fruit juices haven’t had the intended effect of steering kids away from drinking sugared drinks: the average teen consumes about 300 calories per day—that’s nearly 15% of his daily calories—in sweetened drinks, and the food and drink industry is only too happy to feed this need. Ultimately, regulating sugar will prove particularly tricky because it goes beyond health concerns; sugar, for so many people, is love. A plate of cut-up vegetables just doesn’t pack the same emotional punch as a tin of home-made chocolate chip cookies (饼干) , which is why I took my daughter out for a cupcake and not an apple as an after-school treat today. We don’t do that regularly—it’s the first time this school year, actually—and that’s what made it special. As a society, could we ever reach the point where we’d think apples—not a cupcake—are something to get excited over? Says Brindis, one of the report’s authors and director of UCSF’s Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies: “We recognize that there are cultural and celebratory aspects of sugar. Changing these patterns is very complicated. “For inroads (进展) to be made, say the authors in their statement, people have to be better educated about the hazards of sugar and agree that something’s got to change: Many of the interventions (干预) that have reduced alcohol and tobacco consumption can be models for addressing the sugar problem, such as imposing special sales taxes, controlling access, and tightening licensing requirements on vending machines (自动售货机) and snack-bars that sell high sugar products in schools and workplaces. “ We’re not talking prohibition,”Schmidt said. “We’re not advocating a major imposition of the government into people’s lives. We’re talking about gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose. What we want is to actually increase people’s choices by making foods that aren’t loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get. “2.Why do some researchers think sugar should be considered “a controlled substance” ?A.It contains nothing but empty calories.B.It is as harmful as morphine and heroin.C.It works the same way as alcohol and tobacco in the human body.D.Excessive intake of sugar results in liver toxicity and various diseases,正确答案:D解析:文章第一段提出将糖归为管制品,是因为其会造成健康风险,第二段引用评论文章来列举糖带来的健康风险:果糖会诱发肝毒性和许多其他慢性疾病的进程,少量的糖不会出问题,但是大量的糖会慢慢导致死亡。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answers to each question.Passage oneWhy do some birds flock when they feed? Many researchers say birds forage in groups to protect themselves from being attacked. Since there are a greater number of eyes on the lookout, individual birds can spend more time eating and less time worrying about being eaten.Thomas Caraco, a biologist at the University of Rochester, recently studied yellow-eyed juncos over a three-day period to see how they altered their feeding habits in the presence of a trained Harris hawk. Juncos are probably ________.A.very nice to look atB. stronger and more fierce than hawk sC. spending a lot of time worrying about being eatenD. mild in disposition42. According to the passage, when birds eat in groups, they ________.A. are less worriedB. eat lessC. are more worriedD. alter their feeding habits43. Caraco’s Christmas-tree experiment shows that ________.A. birds are not afraid of treesB. birds become bolder if there is a hiding-place nearbyC. birds often hide themselves in treesD. birds are free whether there are trees around or not 45. The purpose of air conditioning is __________.A. to manufacture better airB. to improve the condition of the airC. to change the air we now have into a new kind of airD. to produce fresh air47. Conditioning makes air better for us __________.A. by blowing away the dustB. by treating the dust with some chemicalsC. by cooling the dustD. by removing the dust48. On warm or hot days the air can be cooled __________.A. to a desired temperatureB. to a freezing temperatureC. to only a few degrees below the outside temperatureD. Both A and B49. The air conditioner__________.A. removes all the moisture in the airB. adds moisture to the airC. maintains the proper proportion of moisture in the airD. prevents moisture from coming into the room50 . According to the passage, __________.A. air conditioning is of great use only in summer.B. air conditioning is of great help to our comfort.C. it’s not always easy to achieve the desired level of the moisture in the airD. it’s the fan in the air-conditioner that is of great importance.Passage ThreeThe last few days before Christmas passed quickly and it was soon Christmas Eve. This movement of water is called the tide. Tides are caused by the pull of the sun and the moon on the earth’s surface; since the moon is closer, it affects the tides more than the sun. When the moon is directly overhead, it actually pulls on the water that is below it. This causes the water level to rise because the water is pulled away from the earth. As the moon disappears over the horizon, the pull lessens and the water level settles back towards the ocean bottom. When the water reaches its highest level, we have high ride.
