What is Halloween?
• The word itself, “Halloween,” actually has its origins in the Catholic Church(天主教). It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain the Celtic New year

There once was an old abandoned house. With a terrible past, the house never allowed anyone to make it their home. The stories in town were many. Grandparents warned their grandchildren not to play anywhere near the old house or the devil would get them. For many curious souls it was true.It is said that the seance room just above the foyer is the most haunted room in the whole house.

The the origin of Halloween
Halloween, or Hallowe’en, is a holiday celebrated on October 31. Irish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century. Halloween is celebrated in several countries of the Western world, most commonly in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, United Kingdom and occasionally in parts of Australia.
The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased(死亡) dissolved(消失), and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires(营火), into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic(模仿) the evil spirits or placate(安 抚,平息) them.

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic(凯尔 特人 )festival known as Samhain(萨温节).The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic(盖尔族的, 盖尔语的) culture, and is sometimes regarded as the "Celtic New Year". Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient pagans(异教徒, 非基督教徒,没 有宗教信仰的人) to take stock of (估计, 观察 )supplies and slaughter livestock(家畜) for winter stores.

WITCHES
Witches were thought to be tellers of fortune and to cast spells, both good and bad. This frightened many because it was believed that these powers were strongest on Halloween night. The image of a witch has greatly changed over the centuries. Once thought of as old, wrinkled, green skinned hags, many people associate witchcraft to either evil or as being wise.

Because bats only fly at night and live in tombs, caves, and abandoned churches and buildings, they are believed to be omens of evil. They are commonly associated with witches and vampires. It is superstition that witches and vampires can take the form of a bat. Since the vampire bat is the only mammal that feeds on blood, they are often linked to death and occult rituals.
