It is clear she knows what it takes to get young people excited about science. But it was not always that way. When she first started teaching college freshman classes almost two decades ago.she says she struggled to grab the attention of her younger students. She was used to teaching juniors, as she had for a few years prior to that. By junior year, students majoring in physics are committed to learning, she says. But when it comes to teaching a large lecture hall of 100-plus first-year students, first impressions are make or break“I did not grab their attention on the first day-that was my mistake,"she says.“I missed this opportunity to bond with them from the very beginning."By the second semester, she adjusted her approach to make her lecture halls feel smaller, and get her students engaged. The key, she says, has been to make herself approachable and her instruction personal."“Talk to your students before and after class, walk up and down the stairs when you teach your class rather than stay on the stage. And don't just lecture, talk to them.make it interactive. When you ask the question, you expect the answer,"she says. “If you don't have the answer, you go to them and you still make them work with you-it's not always easy, but when you' re close to them, it's definitely easier."11. According to Paragraph l, professors find it more difficult to ____A. use smartphones in classB.become social media starsC. get students* attention in classD. give lectures without using laptops12. What can we learn about Dr. Tatiana from Paragraph 2?A. She is a professor of online games.B. As their children began moving up through the nation's schools, it became clear that a new class Of academic achievers was emerging Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their educations abroad arrived in the US with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. Thy are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college, Asians feel they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree. Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer, An effective measure of parental attention is homework, Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps, Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that breeds success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education Both explanations for academic success worry Asian-Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social isolation(隔绝). Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship61、While making tremendous achievements at college, Asian-American students_____A、feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of EnglishB、are afraid that their academic successes bear a strong characterC、still worry about unfair treatment in societyD、general feel it a shame to have to depend on their parents62、What are the major factors that determine the success of Asian-Americans?A、A solid foundation in basic mathematics and Asian cultureB、Hard work and intelligenceC、Hard help and a limited knowledge of EnglishD、Asian culture and the American educational system63、Few Asian-American students major in human science mainly because_____A、their English is not good enoughB、they are afraid they might meet with unfair judgment in these areasC、there is a wide difference between Asian and western culturesD、they know little about American culture and society64、why do the two "explanations"(Line1, para . 3)worry Asian-Americans?A、They are afraid they would again be isolated from American society in generalB、People would think that Asian students rely on their parents for successC、Asian Americans would be a threat to other minoritiesD、American academic achievements have taken on too strong an Asian character65、The author's tone in this passage is_______A、sympatheticB、doubtfulC、criticalD、objectivePassage TwoTelevision has now come to nearly every family. It has become a very Important part in people's life. School children in the US watch TV about 25 hours a week. Some people feel that television is good for children because it helps them learn about their country and the world. With the help of programs of education, children do better in school. Other people feel that there are too many programs about love and crime on TV, and that even programs of education don't help children a lot. Children simply watch too much television, so they don't do a lot of other important things for their education, children of three to six learn to speak their language and talk with people. When they are watching TV, they are only listening to the language , and they aren't talking with anyone. When school children watch TV, they read less, Because of this, they don't learn to read or write quickly at school. All children learn by doing, and they need time to play in order to learn about the world. When they watch TV, they play less. They also have less time to do with their parents and friends, and they have less time for sports. Recently, fifteen families in Denver decided to stop watch TV for a month or more. At first it was difficult, but there were soon a lot of good changes the children read , played, and exercised more, and the family became full of joy. But at the end of the month all the families began to watch TV as much as before. Not one family was able to give up television completely.66、Television_________.A、is not important to school childrenB、helps children learn to speakC、has a lot to do with people's lifeD、must have more programs of education67、Some people think that television is good for children because_____A、some programs help them love their parentsB、the news programs are important to themC、it makes them play less than beforeD、they can learn something good from it68、Some people think that television is bad for children because_______A、there are too many TV programs not good for childrenB、its language is difficult to understandC、it is helpful to their thinking and doingD、their eyes work much every day69、In the US, school children watch TV about ______a dayA、two and a half hoursB、four hoursC、twenty-five hoursD、five hours70、Because school children watch too much TV, they_____A、write more quickly than beforeB、don't learn to read or write as quickly at schoolC、read a lotD、read and write much morePassage ThreeIt was a quarter past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she was going to work. Her bus had inched(蠕动) along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked "King Enterprises", she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. Form inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had had the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking .At the far end of the room, somebody must have just told a joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his desk, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.71、Marie felt nervous when she knocked at the door because_______A、it was her first day in a new jobB、she was a little bit late for workC、she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong placeD、there was no answer from inside the office72、Marie could hardly recognize the office she went into as ______A、she had been there only onceB、Mr. King was not in the officeC、Nobody was doing any workD、The office had a new appearance73、The people in the office suddenly started working because______A、they saw a stranger in the officeB、they had finished their morning breakC、no one wanted to talk to MarieD、the boss was about to arrive74、we can infer from the text that the employees of the enterprise______A、would start their work by listening to a jokeB、were cold to new comersC、were always punctual for workD、lacked devoting to the company75、the best title for this text would be ______A、Punctual Like a ClockB、A Cold WelcomeC、An Unpunctual ManagerD、Better Late ThanNever Passage Four Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for foof. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership which is good for both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫) on the sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other .this is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as "dustmen", taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die76、Some birds like to sit on a sheep because_____A、they can eat its parasitesB、they enjoy traveling with the sheepC、they depend on the sheep for existenceD、they find the position most comfortable77、The underlined word "they" in the last sentence of the first paragraph refers to_____A、birds and parasitesB、birds and sheepC、parasites and sheepD、sheep, birds and parasites 78、we learn from the text that corals depend on plants for______79、what does the second paragraph mainly discuss? A、Some plants depend on each other for food B、Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily C、Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence D、Some animals live better together 80、The underlined part "giving in return oxygen" in the second paragraph means ______A、returning back the coral oxygen to the coralB、giving oxygen to the coral as debtsC、giving oxygen to the coral in exchangeD、producing oxygen for the coralⅤ.Close (20points)It is said that most adult second language learners will be lucky to acquire 5,000 words even after several years of study .(81) comparison a native speaker can usually have 20,000 words. This relatively slow progress has (82) to do with aptitude than with exposure. It has been calculated that a classroom (83) would need 18years of classroom exposure to supply the same amount (84) vocabulary input that occurs in just one year of natural settings. How many words does a learner (85) to know? One figure that (86) often quoted is 2,000. this is around the number of words that most native speakers use in (87) daily conversations. It is also the size of the defining vocabulary used in dictionaries (88) language learners In (89), the most frequent 100words in English make up 50 per cent of most texts. these include grammar-or function-words (90) as "has" ,"to" ,and "did", but not content words like "answer", ""depend and "large".81、A、of B、On C、In D、By82、A、much B、less C、many D、large83、A、learner B、person C、worker D、teacher84、A、about B、in C、of D、as85、A、should B、need C、must D、think86、A、was B、as C、is D、with87、A、whose B、people's C、their D、his88、A、for B、with C、of D、about89、A、language B、words C、fact D、dictionary90、A、that B、same C、use D、suchVI.

What happens when his space requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effect of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, ant reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns an even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep or eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even killeach other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but also essential for human survival?51. This passage is mainly about_______.A) living space and behaviorB) population and living conditionsC) interesting experiments on ratsD) a natural law for human society52. What is the purpose of the experiments described in the passage?A) To determine how much living space a rat needs.B) To see what happens when rats live in a limited space.C) To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings.D) To find out the relationship between population and living conditions.53. How would rats behave when their living conditions become too crowded?A) They eat a lot and become friendly to others.B) They sleep little and act quite peacefully.C) They eat little but sleep soundly.D) They become nervous and tend to be war-like.54. Over the years people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto(世界语),was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof . a doctor in Warsaw . He published a book about his new language in 1887.To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible.Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary. By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more man one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious. Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No One would deny the usefulness of a word language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.55. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city's highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city's buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren't resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake-resistant. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend \\rithOLlt breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports.Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake's vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building toshift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.59. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that .A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is toA) counterbalance an earthquake's action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake's vibrations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on .A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of. this passage is mostly to .A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U.S.B) encourage civil engineers to make extensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildingsSection BDirections: Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single line through the centre.63.首先,他如此努力工作并非只是为了钱,他一心为了教育青年人并设法激励他们在各方面取得进步。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students. 71 If a long reading assignment is given, teachers expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. When research is assigned, the professor in the United States expects the students to take the initiative and complete the assignment with less guidance. Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be over-dependent on them. In the united States, professors have other duties besides teaching. Often they are responsible for administrative work within their departments. In addition, they may be obliged to publish articles and books. Therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make appointment.Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the students in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student’s oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role ( i.e. listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions and informal lectures. In the teaching of science and mathematics, the dominant mode of instruction is generally traditional with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking note. However, new educational trends have psychology classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups ,design projects, make presentations and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are “applied” rather than “theoretical”they stress “doing ” and involvement.51 When research is assigned the professor_______.Awill give the student some necessary guidanceB will not give student any guidanceC prefer that student not be dependent on him at allD expect the student to complete it under his guidance52 Which of the following is NOT the duity of an American professor?ASolving the students’ problem during office hoursB Being responsible for some administrative work.C Publishing articles and books.D Spending a lot of time with the students outside of the class.53 In the teaching of science and mathematics, the dominant mode of instruction is _______.A classroom discussionBstudent presentationCformal lecturesDinformal lecturesPassage TwoThe last few years have seen new wealth in the group of white-collar workers in China. Primarily this group consists of lawyers, artists, company presidents and employees of joint-venture companies. This group did not exist ten years ago. Business ventures such as real estate development, computer companies and travel agencies have nurtured this new class of ambitious Chinese who have tasted “the good life” and want even more of it.What are the marks of this group of people? First of all, it is defined by what its members have: cell phones, washing machines , microwave ovens, computers, homes and vacations. But this group is not only marked by material things. A psychological independence and carefree optimism is also present.Middel-aged successful company presidents, young prefessionals even college students are optimistic, expecting the best in their future.Chinese entrepreneurs(企业家)began accumulating money in the late 1980’s. But it was not until the middle 90’s that the material possession of the newly-rich----- cell phones, computers ,cars, houses----were easily available . These high-tech entrepreneurs quit state enterprise to start private companies nearly a decade ago, when China started to transform from a planned to a market economy. These early entrepreneurs are now wealthy by any country’s standards. However, like any newly-rich Chinese, they seem a little uncomfortable when asked about wealth. One reason for their discomfort is that they realize that the prosperity---wealth---that has created the group of newly-rich has not benefited all Chinese equally. Some entrepreneurs have move up in social status, but many workers have been laid off, losing their jobs temporarily for economic reason, from state-run factories. For most Chinese, the move into this style of life is still a step-by-step progress. It may be slow but many business people are hopeful. As a real estate entrepreneur fromBeijing said: “This is not just about money. It’s about a better quality of life.”55 The word “nurture”(Line 4, Prara1) probably means____________.A naturalizeB nourishC care for and educateD help the development ofWhy do many newly-rich chinese feel embarassed when asked about wealth56 According to the passage , which of the following are NOT marked of the newly-rich Chinese.A Great ambition and the whish for a new lifestyleB Houses and vacationsC Mobile phones and computersD Mental independence and optimism57 Why do many newly-rich Chinese feel embarrassed when saked about wealth?A Because they have higher social statusB Because they have quit state-run factoriesC Because they have fired many employeesD Because they know many others are not so wealthy58 Accoding to the real estate entrepreneur, many business people are looking forward to this Style of Life for the sake of_______.A more wealthB higher social statusC better quality of lifeD greater famePassage ThreeIn recent years a new and serious problem has arisen for international airlines and their passengers. This is the relatively new crime of hijacking. Once an unheard-of event, it has now become a common occurrence. There is not very much anyone can do once a hijacker is on board an aeroplane. He may be carrying a gun or hand grenades, which, if used, would cause a disaster. The only thing to do is try to ensure that these people never get on the plane in the first instance. So airlines all over the world have security procedures. Before any passenger can get on an airplane at the airport, he must go through a series of security checks to make sure he isn't carrying anything that is potentially dangerous or could be used as a weapon on board. The security measures vary from airport to airport. At some airports there is very little security. At other airports the security checks are very strict and it can take up to half-an-hour to get through them all.KaiTakAirport in Hong Kong, China, has a good security system. No aircraft start- ingits journey from Hong Kong has ever been hijacked. At Kai Tak, when a passenger first checks in, his or her name is matched with the computer list of passengers booked on that particular flight. If the name is not recognised, the passenger will be taken aside and questioned by security guards and may not be allowed on the plane. Next, every suitcase is X-ray checked before it goes into the plane. Any suitcase that seems to have something dangerous in it is not put on the plane. Then the hand baggagewhich the passengers will carry on to the plane is checked. Each passenger has to open his or her bag and the security clerk examines the contents. Cameras may be opened, even babies taken out of their prams and carry-cots. For example, if a person says, “you know, Barbara, I really like you,”it has different meanings depending on whether it is said by man or a woman, in an office or a bar. Context, the tone of voice, the stress put on certain words, as well as the eye contact, physical distance, and the relationship between the speaker and the listener are all factors which give meaning to what’s being said. Sometimes, these factors can generate much more meaning than the words themselves. If a friend say to me, “Gee, I can’t wait to see the result of the upcoming election,”my interpretation of that message will be based upon my knowledge of my friend’s political views, the situation with the current campaign, and my ability to understand the meaning behind the tone of voice. Our ability to understand such cue is developed without us being aware of it through our process of socialization, Ourinterpretation of these cues just comes naturally. Every culture has its own set of culture cues that each member of that culture understands. It’s common how a person from culture A and a person from culture B interpret the very same words in totally different ways. Here are some examples:When ”Sarcasm”Means “Sincerity”Marsha thought things were going well with her new French friends, particularly Bertrand. He often invited her to interesting and fun events, but he was often making fun of her. One day at an art exhibition, while looking at a particularly abstract piece, Marsha said that she couldn’t understand what the artist was trying to express. Bertrand smiled and responded, “Yes, I’m afraid French art is far too advanced for Americans to understand.”Marsha was upset; she really liked him and couldn’t figure out what caused him to frequently make fun of her. So, she asked her host mother about it. “My dear,”the host mother told her, “This means that he really likes you. In France, when someone feels comfortable enoughto make fun of you, that mean that you have been welcomes as a very close friends.”Joshua, an American student in Heredia, Costa Rican partner to meet for coffee. When he asked what time they should meet, the response was “Nos encontramos ahora en elparquet”. “Ahora”literally means now. So, he grabbed his jacket and headed straight to the park where they agreed to meet. Half an hour later, his friend arrived without the least sigh of regret for being late. After discussing the matter with his Spanish teacher, Joshua learned that in Costa Rica, ”Ahora”means sometime within the hour. And, if people decide to meet someplace like park, it is no problem for one or the other to wait for a while because they will spend some nice time in the park, probably running into some other friends, or meeting someone friendly. When “Yes”Doesn’t Means “Yes”Many business people might have experienced this frustrating situation in Japan. Sarah, a young businesswoman from New York, was sent to Japan to close a big deal for her company. While giving her presentation, she became more and more certain of sale because her Japanese business partners continually nodded their heads as she spoke. When she finished, she thought the deal was made and asked when they would like to sign the agreement. She was shocked when she was told that they were not yet sure if they wanted to make the deal or not. What Sarah did not know is that in Japan, nodding head does not necessarily mean “yes”as it does in the US. It can also mean “yes, I am listening and understanding what you are saying.”These stories provide just a few examples of how language skills are simply not enough to achieve effective communication in another culture. To get the most of your international learning experience, focus on gaining cross-cultural skills will enable you do the following:`understand how culture affects communication;`deal with behavior that seems to you strange or offensive;`learn from your cultural adaptation process;`communicate more effectively. These skills will also help you when you learn a new language. After all, language is s reflection of the culture from which it developed.51. This passage tells us that .A. sometimes, all the meaning of a message is revealedfrom the tone of voice.B. language skills can convey more meaning than you can understand.C. language skills alone are not enough for cross-cultural communication.D. meaning of a message only exist in the spoken or written words.52. Cross-cultural skillsB. Spoken languageC. Behavior studyD. CommunicatingPassage TwoThe automobile has given people incredible freedom of movement. It enables them to decide where they want to go and when. The automobile influences where people live and work and how they spend their leisure time. The striking changes in people’s lives created by the automobile began in the United States and have since spread across much of the globe, especially in developed countries. But even in developing nations, the automobile is increasingly reshaping patterns of living. When the first automobiles were produced, only the well-to-do could afford them. Soon, however, prices declined as production increased in response to the growing demand. The lower prices put the automobile within reach of more and more Americans. Well-off urban residents found car ownership cheaper than keeping a horse and carriage. The growth in car ownership led to the building of more and better roads, which further increased travel throughout the nation. Before the development of automobiles, urban workers walked, bicycled, or rode horse-drawn vehicles to their jobs. But as roads improved and car ownership expanded, workers no longer had to live near their jobs.During the 1920s, people in U.S. cities increasingly moved to the suburbs because of the freedom provided to the workers by automobile ownership. By the mid-1950s, even factories had begun to relocate in the suburbs. Wherever people have easy access to automobiles, cars play a major role in social life and the choice of recreational activities. People find it fun to hop in the car and visit friends and relatives, whether the drive takes a few minutes, hours, or days. Theautomobile helps make it easy to organize picnics, family reunions, and other get-togethers. Trips by automobile to such places as theme parks, national parks, and mountain and seashore resorts are a favorite type of vacation for many people.55. Which of the following is NOT a change brought by the automobile?A. The freedom to go anywhere in the world.B. The changed way of entertaining ourselves in life.C. The growth of more and better roads.D. The disregard of the existence of national borders.56. What does the word “well-to-do”(Line 1, Para.2) mean ?A. Excellent.B. Well done.C. Rich.D. Better.57. Which of the following is NOT a change directly created by automobiles?A. More theme parks and national parks were set up.B. More city residents moved to suburban areas.C. More and better roads were built.D. People have family reunions more frequently.58. What is the author’s attitude toward automobiles?A. Negative.B. Positive.C. Neutral.D. Indifferent.Passage ThreeTo become a success in high tech Silicon Valley, Alan Aerts used low tech skills and hard work. He carried boxes of produce for a grocery store and sold bread to restaurants while launching a vending machine business that sells soft drinks and snack foods to workaholic computer engineers. In 190, on his route as a bread salesman for a bakery, Aerts ran into the owner of a Pac Man game control panel who was servicing his equipment at a restaurant in Oakland, California. Aerts, who always wore a shirt and tie on sales calls, was impressed by the other fellow’s jeans and T shirt and resolved to branch out on his own.But capitalism requires capital, and Aerts had little money to spare. Living paycheck to paycheck with his wife and newborn son, he worked days at the bakery and nights at a grocery store to pay the mortgage. During downtime between jobs, he developed his business strategy. ”I’m sure I did every wrong thing you can possibly do,”says Aerts. “But I knew that with enough hard work, it would all make sense.”To get his business off the ground, he relied on a second mortgage and credit cards, sometimes paying rates as high as 19%, to buy video game and vending machines. After purchasing several machines at retail price, he realized he could buy them directly from the manufacturers for less. And he learned that vending machines were more profitable than video games, which needed to be replaced frequently to keep up with the fickle tastes of gamers. Aerts used the contacts he made through his bakery job to prospect for new business. Tohedge his bets, he put in ten years at the grocery store to earn a modest pension.Today, Aerts’s company, Custom Vending Systems, is the largest privately owned vendor in the region. He says business is booming as the Valley’s economy blossoms after its 2000 bust. In 2005, Aerts and his wife donated $ 2.5 million to fund scholarships at the local community college. He’s still busy around the clock, but now he dedicates evenings and weekends to charity work and local politics instead of a second job.59.Alan Aerts achieved success in Silicon Valley mainly by .A. starting a vending machine businessB. the traditional approach and hard workC. selling soft drinks and snack foodsD. selling game control panels60. Thursday Mom ran an entire dishwashing cycle for 3 cups, 2 plates, a knife and 3 little spoons. That's a lot of electricity and hot water down the drain.Dad drives 28 miles back and forth to work alone. Two men he works with live right nearby, and they could carpool (合伙使用汽车) and save about a thousand gallons of gas a year. And me, I'm guilty too. I went out and left the radio blaring in my room all Saturday morning. So last night at the dinner table we all agreed to do everything we could to conserve energy. Faster showers. Lower thermostats (温度调节器). Fuller care. (51)It's a fact that this country's using up energy faster than we produce it. I read that we may run out of oil — forever — in thirty ears. So terrible. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.(53) It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. (54) To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand --- no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move.In this instance studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.36. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneThere is so much more meaning to a message than what exists in the spoken or written words. For example, if a person says,“you know, Barbara, I really like you,” it has different meanings depending on whether it is said by man or a woman, in an office or a bar. Context, the tone of voice, the stress put on certain words, as well as the eye contact, physical distance, and the relationship between the speaker and the listener are all factors which give meaning to what’s being said. Sometimes, these factors can generate much more meaning than the words themselves. If a friend say to me, “Gee, I can’t wait to see the result of the upcoming election,” my interpretation of that message will be based upon my knowledge of my friend’s political views, the situation with the current campaign, and my ability to understand the meaning behind the tone of voice. Our ability to understand such cue is developed without us being aware of it through our process of socialization, Our interpretation of these cues just comes naturally. Every culture has its own set of culture cues that each member of that culture understands. It’s common how a person from culture A and a person from culture B interpret the very same words in totally different ways. Here are some examples:When ”Sarcasm” Means “Sincerity”Marsha thought things were going well with her new French friends, particularly Bertrand. He often invited her to interesting and fun events, but he was often making fun of her. One day at an artexhibition, while looking at a particularly abstract piece, Marsha said that she couldn’t understand what the artist was trying to express. Bertrand smiled and responded, “Yes, I’m afraid French art is far too advanced for Americans to understand.”Marsha was upset; she really liked him and couldn’t figure out what caused him to frequently make fun of her. So, she asked her host mother about it. “My dear,” the host mother told her, “This means that he really likes you. In France, when someone feels comfortable enough to make fun of you, that mean that you have been welcomes as a very close friends.”Joshua, an American student in Heredia, Costa Rican partner to meet for coffee. When he asked what time they should meet, the response was “Nos encontramos ahora en elparquet”. “Ahora” literally means now. So, he grabbed his jacket and headed straight to the park where they agreed to meet. Half an hour later, his friend arrived without the least sigh of regret for being late. After discussing the matter with his Spanish teacher, Joshua learned that in Costa Rica, ”Ahora” means sometime within the hour. And, if people decide to meet someplace like park, it is no problem for one or the other to wait for a whilebecause they will spend some nice time in the park, probably running into some other friends, or meeting someone friendly. When “Yes” Doesn’t Means “Yes”Many business people might have experienced this frustrating situation in Japan. What Sarah did not know is that in Japan, nodding head does not necessarily mean “yes” as it does in the US. This passage tells us that _________.A. sometimes, all the meaning of a message is revealed from the tone of voice.B. language skills can convey more meaning than you can understand.C. language skills alone are not enough for cross-cultural communication.D. meaning of a message only exist in the spoken or written words.52. According to the passage, all the following statements are not true except _______ .A. We are born with the ability to understand the cultural cues.B. Marsha’s French friend, Bertrand, didn’t like her and often laughed at her ignorance of the French atr.C. Joshua learned that in Costa Rica, people are usually late for their appointments and won’t feel sorry for that.D. Nodding in Japan is understood in quite a different way from that in America.53. The stories told in the passage show that language skills are not enough for people to communicate effectively in___________.A. the same culture.B. another culture.C. family members.D. in the same situation.54. _______ will also be helpful when we learn a new language.A. The automobile helps make it easy to organize picnics, family reunions, and other get-togethers. What does the word “well-to-do” (Line 1, Para.2) mean ________ ?A. Excellent.B. Well done.C. Rich.D. Better.57. Which of the following is NOT a change directly created by automobiles?A. More theme parks and national parks were set up.B. More city residents moved to suburban areas.C. Aerts, who always wore a shirt and tie on sales calls, wasimpressed by the other fellow’s jeans and T shirt and resolved to branch out on his own.But capitalism requires capital, and Aerts had little money to spare. Living paycheck to paycheck with his wife and newborn son, he worked days at the bakery and nights at a grocery store to pay the mortgage. During downtime between jobs, he developed his business strategy. ”I’m sure I did every wrong thing you can possibly do,” says Aerts. To hedge his bets, he put in ten years at the grocery store to earn a modest pension.Today, Aerts’s company, Custom Vending Systems, is the largest privately owned vendor in the region. He says business is booming as the Valley’s economy blossoms after its 2000 bust. In 2005, Aerts and his wife donated $ 2.5 million to fund scholarships at the local community college. He’s still busy around the clock, but now he dedicates evenings and weekends to charity work and local politics instead of a second job.59.Alan Aerts achieved success in Silicon Valley mainly by ________ .A. starting a vending machine businessB. the traditional approach and hard workC. selling soft drinks and snack foodsD. selling game control panels60. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some treescan provide an exact record of the weather even further back. (53) It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climatewith plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a treetrunk. (54) To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. Ifthe tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the ringsare close together, then the climate was bad for the tree. Studying tree rings is important not only for thehistory of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find onlysand-no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left sud-denly. Why? A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there.
