A
Everglades National Park is the most endangered national park in America. The purpose of making a national park is to protect the plants and animals that live there. But things that happen outside the park also affect the life within it.
Everglades National Park is part of a much larger area known as the Everglades. At one time, water flowed freely in the Everglades. During the rainy season, water would fill the Kissimmee River. Then it flowed into Lake Okeechobee. Once the lake became full, waters spilled over onto the flatland. From there a shallow sheet of water moved slowly down the Florida Peninsula. Then it emptied into Florida Bay. This shallow sheet of water was the Everglades River. It was only a few inches deep in some spots. But it was up to 50 miles wide and over 100 miles long.
The Everglades is home to many plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Today, some of these plants and animals are in danger of disappearing forever.
The main reason is that the Everglades is no longer a freeflowing river. Canals have been built to drain (排干) most of the shallow river. People have also built a dam to hold back water from Lake Okeechobee. Most of the water from the Everglades is trapped in man-made lakes. Cutting off the flow of water into Everglades National Park has done more harm than good. Now it threatens the wildlife in the park.
Water pollution is another reason why some plants and animals are disappearing. Years ago, large areas of the Everglades were drained and turned into farmland. Today the fertilizers used on crops are polluting the water. The “river_of_grass”is slowly disappearing. Many kinds of plants are disappearing. Animals that depend on these plants for food no longer have anything to eat.
The problems facing Everglades National Park are very serious. But there is still hope. Work is already under way to save the Everglades. The federal government, the state of Florida, and several other groups are all working together to try to undo the damage.
41.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A park in danger
B.Rare plants and animals
C.Following the river
D.Canals , dams and lakes

42.How many water sources are connected with the formation of the Everglades River?
A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.

43.What is the main source of problem in the Everglades?
A.The rainy season is too short.
B.There are too many plants and animals.
C.Water is no longer allowed to flow freely.
D.Water spills out of Lake Okeechobee.

The main reason is that the Everglades is no longer a free-flowing river.可知选C。

44.The underlined part “river of grass”refers to ________.
A.the Kissimmee River B.the Everglades
C.Lake Okeechobee D.Florida Bay

由此可以判断,river of grass (青草的河流)指的就是the Everglades。

B
Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase
your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explaining power”.Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal (日志) of your ideas the next time you're working on a big project, you'll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That's an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem—why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you're_half-way_there.
Writers don't always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.
45.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Way on How to Write
B.Increase Your Brain Power Through Writing
C.Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing

A.has understood it very well
B.needs to understand it better
C.wants to remember it in his or her mind

47.The underlined sentence “you're half-way there” in the fourth paragraph means that ________.
A.you are already successful
B.there's a long way for you to go to reach your goal
C.you are left wondering what to do
D.you have been on the way to success

48.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Writing can cure people of their brain disease.
B.People who can keep all thoughts in mind are more likely to succeed.
C.Writing a book about one topic is the only way to understand it.
D.The more you write, the more logical you will be.

C
Designers Challenged to Build “City on Ice”
Researchers will face the world's most difficult building challenge: to design a hotel and workshop on an Antarctic ice shelf.
The five attempts before the new Halley Bay research station—always home to at least 16 people, and 50 in summer—would sink by at least a meter a year as the ice melted under them and the snow built up around them.
Temperatures drop to as low as -55℃,so building outdoors is only possible in January and February, when the average temperature is -5℃. There are also no building suppliers for 3,
000 miles.
“It isn't just a little group of scientists. You are running a small city,”said Chris Rapley, the director of the British Antarctic Survey, which will run the 19 million pounds project. “You have your power supply, you've got your waste disposal(处理), and you've got your general maintenance (维护), your communication, and so on.”
“It's an airport because our aircraft land there. It's a seaport—when the ship comes in, you have to take out the new materials and put the waste inside. It's a very difficult operation.”
British scientists have worked on the sea ice at Halley Bay for almost 50 years. It was there that the “hole” in the ozone layer (臭氧层) was first spotted in 1985.
The design competition for the new base will be held at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London.
49.According to the passage, the most difficult challenge is ________.

B.designing a hotel and workshop on an Antarctic ice shelf
C.designing a hotel and workshop in the desert
D.designing a hotel and workshop on the moon

50.The reason why Halley Bay research station tended to sink at the rate of at least a meter a year is that ________.
A.the ice melted beneath them
B.the building was too heavy
C.snow built up around them
D.both A and C

此题的答案由第二段最后的“would sink by at least a meter a year as the ice melted under them and the snow built up around them”可以得出。

51.According to the passage, which statement is NOT true?
A.Building outdoors will be possible only in January and February.
B.There will be few building suppliers for 3,000 miles.
C.In the “city on ice” that will be built, you can have a power supply and communication.
D.In the “city on ice”that will be built, you will have waste disposal and general maintenance .

A.there is an airport where the aircraft can land
B.there is a seaport for ships to come into with materials that can be offloaded
C.there is a power supply, waste disposal, general maintenance, and communication
D.all of the above

D(西南师大附中2010·第四次月考)
We convince ourselves that life will be better once we are married, have a baby, then another. Then we get frustrated because our children are not old enough and that all will be well when they are older. Then we are frustrated because they reach teenage years and we must deal with them. Surely we'll be happier when they grow out of the teen years.
We tell ourselves our life will be better when our spouse(配偶)gets his/her act together, when we have a nicer car, when we can take a vacation, when we finally retire. The truth is that there is no better time to be happy than right now. If not, then when? Your life will always be full of challenges. It is better to admit as much and to decide to be happy in spite of it all.
For the longest time, it seemed that life was about to starting real life.
But there was always some obstacles(挫折)along the way, an ordeal(苦难)to get through, some work to be finished, some time to be given, a bill to be paid. Then life would start. It finally dawned on me that those obstacles were part of life. Little by little, that point of view also helped me see that there isn't any road to happiness.
Happiness is the road. So, enjoy every moment. And bear in mind that________. So stop
waiting for school to end, for a return to school, to lose ten pounds, to gain ten pounds, for work to begin, to get married, for Friday evening, for Sunday morning, waiting for a new car, for your mortgage(借款)to be paid off, for spring, for summer, for fall, for winter, for the first or the fifteenth of the month, for your song to be played on the radio, to die, to be reborn...before deciding to be happy.
Happiness is a voyage, not a destination. There is no better time to be happy than...NOW! Live and enjoy the moment.

全文特别是最后一段“Happiness is a voyage, not a destination”可知,生命是一个过程而非终点。

54.The first two paragraphs mainly tell us________.
A.life is a worthwhile but challenging voyage
B.so long as you believe you can, you can
C.people tend to think the future will be brighter than now
D.people feel at a loss about their life

55.The writer thinks________is a real happiness.
A.setting our imagination free
B.enjoying our present life
C.finding our own shortcut to success
D.facing obstacles and challenges bravely

E
I once thought that outer beauty is the only factor to become a great person. When I was young, I read many kinds of books, most of which described characters who are handsome or beautiful. So I think that being beautiful is the only way to become a success.
As I grew up, the story of my best friend made me realize that outer beauty was not so important to make a person successful. She was so beautiful a girl that every classmate liked to chat with her, but she was very arrogant. In her opinion, she could get all she wanted because of the beauty, but all of her friends left her one by one! Only then did she come to know the importance of the beauty in a person's heart, which changed her attitude and she made friends again.
Turning on TV, we can see many advertisements, most of which seem to give us a feeling that physical attractiveness is the most important thing. There_seems_to_be_a_boom_in_plastic_surgery.It is surprising that more and more people, especially girls and women, try it like the first man-made beauty in China, Hao Lulu. It is a common sense that attractive people can easily find work. Most good looking guys usually get higher scores in the job interviews. But, what is real beauty? I want to say that is inner beauty because those who have beauty in their soul are real beautiful persons.
As is known, the beauty judged with eyes is temporary, so we should concentrate on inner beauty. And if we make the efforts to make our minds beautiful, we'll live a happier life.

56.Why did the author want to have a good appearance when she was young?
A.Because she wanted to be one of the characters in the book.
B.Because she wanted to get higher scores in the job interviews.
C.Because she wanted to follow her friend's example mentioned in the passage.
D.Because the successful characters in the books she read were attractive.

57.Why did the writer quote her friend's story?
A.To show how important outer beauty is.
B.To show how terrible to be a beautiful girl.
C.To prove that outer beauty is temporary, which is not the key factor to become a great person.
D.To show how beautiful her friend was.

58.What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph mean?
A.A large number of people pay attention to outer beauty.
B.Surgery is becoming more and more popular.
C.The price of doing plastic surgery is becoming lower and lower, making more and more persons afford it.
D.The living standard has been improved over the past years.

59.Which of the following covers the passage best?
A.How do attractive persons become successful?
B.Plastic surgery is the best way to make a person become beautiful and successful.
C.The key factor to find a good job is being attractive.
D.Inner beauty is the real beauty.

60.What do we know from the passage?
A.If you are too beautiful, all your friends will leave you out of envy.
B.If you have a good appearance, you must get higher scores in the job interviews.
C.Without the TV advertisements, there wouldn't have been a boom in plastic surgery.
D.Those who have good appearances should also develop the beauty in their hearts.

I have been busy with my studies recently since the National College Entrance Examination is approaching. Life is boring for me with tons of exercises and exam papers to do every day. Students in my class all work very hard and the atmosphere in the class is very stressful. Sometimes I feel very tired, but I know this exam will be a turning point in my life and I have to spare no effort to learn all the subjects well enough to be admitted to the university I dream of. Though tired, I can still get lots of fun by doing my schoolwork, especially when I get high marks in exams and make progress in studies. No pains, no gains. I have a conviction that through my efforts. I'll get a satisfying mark and then go to an ideal university. I am feeling pretty hopeful about the future.
Best_wishes.
Yours,
Liu_Ning。
