What is the most important thing for a country’s leader to assure the prosperity of the country?1) Creating more jobs for unemployed worker2) Increasing agriculture and lowering the food price3) Increasing access to affordable houseThe leaders of a country have no shortage of difficult decisions to make. For example, should they lead their countryto success by creating jobs, by promoting agriculture, or by ensuring housing is affordable? Leaders should certainly invest into all of those options, but I believe that the government should use most of its resources to lower the cost of housing.Ensuring low cost housing is better than creating more jobs because creating government jobs is only a Band-Aid solution. It offers a temporary solution, not a permanent one. If there’s a lack of jobs, then that’s a sign that the economy is hurting. If that’s the case, then low-cost housing would actually help more than the government creating unnecessary jobs. As the cost of housing comes down, people will have more disposable income. Businesses will grow, and thus will provide more jobs. It’s a win-win scenario.Similarly, lowering the cost of housing is also better than promoting agriculture in order to reduce the cost of food. While it is true that everyone must eat, it’s also true that everyone must live somewhere. The difference is that a country’s citizens must live in housing within that country, but they don’t need to eat food that comes from that country. These days, we import a large portion of our food from other countries. If a country’s agriculture isn’t providing enough food, then perhaps that country’s land just isn’t ideal for agriculture and it would be a waste of money to attempt to force more agriculture to happen. A better solution would be to focus on the problem it can fix: housing.Meanwhile, reducing the cost of housing is a realistic goal for a country to tackle, and it has long-term benefits that produces a natural boost to the economy. Housing takes up thelargest chunk of most people’s paycheck. For example, we learned in my personal finance class that people should expect to pay between 20% to 30% of their monthly salary on housing. With lower housing costs, people would be able to survive with a lower-end job. People would be able to afford imported food. The economy would improve because people would have more money to spend. This is the solution the government should focus on.In the end, government leaders should invest in the success of the country in every way they can. However, I think investment in lowering the cost of housing will bring the best results.2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Success in school and work, the ability to adapt or adjust to a changing condition or circumstance is more important than having excellent knowledge of a job or in a field of study. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.Nowadays, employers are highly selective: requiring employees to have both academic proficiency and social flexibility. Hence, to increase your chances of getting a desired job, having the ability to adapt to a changing condition is as important as having excellent knowledge of a job or in a field of study. Academic data being equal, the ability to reduce conflict and increase participation is a decisive factor that contributes to your career success. To begin with, the ability to reduce conflict in school and work is partly the course of socialization going beyond the school curriculum. Whereas excellence in any field of study is essential, your success in work depends not only on academicknowledge but also on how to adjust to a changing circumstance. Therefore, it is advisable to learn to be able to adjust to a rather conflicting society because this kind of social flexibility can facilitate your interaction with other people. In other words, communicating respect for potential friends and mates is instrumental to avoiding conflict, particularly in the workplace. In reality, the process of learning this skill begins in school, in both verbal and non-verbal ways. It may be said that without acquiring the ability to reduce conflict, you may run the risk of becoming what is called a social ineptitude, far away from the spirit of teamwork. In certain respects, the success in school and work is a matter of the behaviorism to get flexible in social participation. Thus, you are supposed to learn to be as agreeable and acceptable as need be, mainly through taking part in (without intruding into) a variety of social activities, verbally as well as non-verbally. Verbally, you can increase participation by using the skill to say the right thing at the right time in the right place. It is because positive participation implies your good skill in listening as much as speaking. Similarly, in a non-verbal manner, you can increase participation by doing the right thing at the right time in the right place. In short, you had better adapt yourself to a changing condition or circumstance and behave correspondingly in the right behavior. Finally, worthy of mentioning is that, although socialization may differ from culture to culture, the rules are invariably related to skills to help reduce conflict and increase participation in school and work. Not underestimatingthe importance of having excellent knowledge of a job or in a field of study, you ought to also learn those essential social skills to become successful in life. Academic proficiency and social flexibility should not be considered as something like black and white, you may just as well think that the job market is largely in the color of grey.

Sample answer:The reading passage introduces a theory that animals hide their food to prevent it being found by others. In the listening, the professor uses an example to explain the theory. Squirrels always hide their nuts to store them for cold weather. They hide the food to different places. They dig holes, and place the food in all of them. Then squirrels dig the hole containing the least food more times than others. In this way, the squirrels want other animals to believe this hole contains all their food so that they can keep the other food away from other species.

Describe the details of what you will do to improve it.Do you agree or disagree the following statement: Advertising has too much influence on what people buy. What suggestions would you give to a friend who wants to improve his/her score in class?Well, I think there are many ways that h/she can make use of to enhance his/her academic performance. He can join a study group where h/she can ask other group members for clarifying difficult points. I would also advise him to preview what the professor is going to discuss the next day and review what the professor has taught. That way he/she will understand better the teaching content and the knowledge will retain much longer. Also make full use of the office hours, if he/she encounters difficulties, the professor is always glad to offer a helping hand. Some people like to purchase books from a book store while others like to borrow books from the library. Which do you prefer and why?I prefer buying books to borrowing books. True, borrowing books can save you a lot of money and you can get almost any book, even the latest releases if you are willing to wait or join a queue. However, you have to return it on time even if you have not finished it. However, by buying the book, you can read it wherever you want and whenever you want, and once you have read it, you can lend it to friends and family or even give it as a gift. Another strength of owing books is that we can take whatever notes on the margin of the pages of the books. Is it beneficial for students to have computers at school? In my opinion, the computer is an essential tool for students both in their studies and their life. For example, the other day, my English teacher assigned a project. With the help of my computer, I found a lot of useful information and made several neat PPT slides to facilitate my presentation. Through computers, students can complete school assignments or even take online courses. Besides, computers can serve as a medium for students to communicate by sending and receiving E-mails and instant messages. Furthermore, with computers, students can access the internet to find information about news, weather, sports and products, to listen to or watch television, movies or radio, making purchases or even finding jobs. Therefore, the computer is a must for students.Would you keep on expressing your honest opinions, even if you know that they will not be approved by others?I will voice my opinion even when I am aware that others might disagree with it cause it’s my right as an independent individual to communicate how I feel about a particular subject. Disagreement will show my individuality and make others respect me. Someone who just concurs with whatever others say will go nowhere. What’s more, by clearly expressing my own thoughts I can hone my debating and communicative skills as well as critical and logical thinking.Talk about a recent event or celebration you went to. Do you think that everyone who went there had a good time?I recently attended my cousin’s wedding ceremony. My cousin is an engineer who is now living and working in the U.S. It was really a grand occasion. All the relatives including my 90 year old grandpa were present. I guess there must be over a hundred people. We had a magnificent dinner at a restaurant. During the dinner we talked, proposed toasts to each other. There were traditional opera performances to watch. I guess everybody was having a good time except my aunt and uncle. The reason is that my cousin is their only son and after the wedding he’d have to back to the States, therefore my aunt and uncle won’t get to see him very often.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Sixteen-year-old people are not mature enough to drive. In my opinion sixteen-year-olds are way too young to drive without supervision. After all, they are still high school students, they tend be reckless, always looking for fun and excitement. That might lead to accidents. Also, I recently read a news report that suggested that the teen brain — the part that weighs risks, makes judgments and controls impulsive behavior is not developed enough. Therefore, they are generally not ready to face thelife-threatening risks that drivers can encounter behind the wheel.Of the following three professions, which one do you think is the most important for society: primary school teacher, nurse or artist? It is my considered opinion that of the three professions listed, primary school teachers contributed most to society and are therefore the most important. First of all, it is likely that a person may not attend college or even secondary school; however, most people attend primary school to receive basic education, so primary school teachers influence most people’s lives. What’s more, primary school teachers play an important role in developing a child’s intellect and work habits. Primary school is the first time most children are in a strictly educational environment. While pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes do teach children some basic skills and knowledge, such as shapes and colors, primary school immerses children in the educational environment they will be experiencing until graduation from high school.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People under 18 years old are not mature enough to vote.I think that 18 is a suitable age at which individuals have the necessary capacity to independently decide how to cast a vote. First of all, at 18, most people have finished their high school, which means they are literate and have the reasoning ability, and this is the prerequisite for voting. Secondly, at 18 a person can have his/her driving license. If we allow them to drive, we should also recognize that they are mature enough to vote. Finally, in today’s society 18-year-olds are more mature than ever before and there is no significant gap between an18-year-old’s ability to vote and people who are older. In fact many 40-year-olds are incapable to make informed decisions. What kind of music do you like the least? Give reasons why you do not like this kind of music. Some college students like to spend their time free time studying another course or doing schoolwork. Others like to join a club and enjoy club activities. Which do you think is better and why?One of your friends wants to drop out of college. Do you think it is a good idea or not? Why?Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In order to be successful, a person should study in the university. Are the ways you study different from others, and how?Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Playing computer or video games has a negative influence on teenagers.。
