One of my favorites is the legend of the Monkey King, a powerful monkey deity who aids the monk Xuanzang on a journey to India to obtain sacred texts. The Monkey King has amazing abilities like cloud-riding and shape-shifting, but he's also really mischievous and gets into a lot of trouble! Today I want to tell you all about the totally awesome traditional culture we have here in China. It's really cool and interesting stuff!First up, let's talk about some of the amazing festivals we celebrate every year. One of my favorites is Chinese New Year which usually happens in late January or early February. It's like a huge two-week long party! We get to stay home from school, eat lots of yummy food like dumplings and noodles, receive red envelopes with money inside from our parents and grandparents, and watch incredible fireworks shows at night. The festivals all have really neat traditions tied to them too. For example, during Chinese New Year we clean our houses from top to bottom to sweep away any bad luck and make way for incoming good luck. My grandparents tell me the reason we celebrate this holiday is to give thanks for a plentiful harvest. It's a lot harder than it looks but she says with practice I'll get the hang of the elegant brush strokes.Food is another huge part of Chinese culture that I absolutely love. There are just so many delicious dishes and flavors to experience! My personal favorites are dumplings, hand-pulled noodles, Peking duck, and authentic Chinese braisesand stir-fries. The cooking methods and ingredients we use have been perfected over thousands of years of history. I think Chinese food is the most scrumptious food in the entire world but I may be a little biased!Overall, I feel incredibly lucky to grow up being immersed in such a rich, profound cultural heritage here in China. The decorations with red lanternsand upside down fu symbols look so pretty. And I love getting hong bao (red envelopes) filled with lucky money from my relatives. Yum yum, I can buy so many treats!For Chinese New Year, we also eat lots of delicious foods that are supposed to bring good luck for the new year. Like dumplings that look like golden nuggets for wealth. And nian gao, those really chewy sticky rice cakes. What I like best though is the sweet tangyuan soup with little black sesame balls. Mmm!Another awesome festival is the Mid-Autumn Festival when we get to eat yummy mooncakes and carry around brightly lit lanterns in all different shapes and colors like bunnies or dragons. One year, I even had a lantern that looked like Transformers! How cool is that?Then there are the amazing Chinese legends and mythology stories that I love hearing about. My favorite is definitely the story of Ne Zha, the little boy warrior who fights against the evil Shen Gong Bao and has cool powers like firing universe rings from his magic fire-tipped golden hoop. The Monkey King Sun Wukong is another awesome character who's super strong and can cloud-somersault for thousands of miles.Chinese culture also has the most beautiful arts and crafts. One of my favorite activities is making zhi zhus, those cool littlepaper weavings that create 3D shapes like dragons or phoenixes when you hang them up. I made a yellow dragon one for my mom's birthday and she loved it! I also enjoy cutting jianzhi, those intricate paper cuttings that are so delicate and pretty.Speaking of arts, Chinese calligraphy is just the coolest. Using those solid ox hair brushes to paint vertically with water and ink looks so elegant. My grandpa is incredible at it and makes these beautiful hanging scrolls. Maybe I can learn it too when I get older!Then there's the martial arts like kung fu with all the kicks and jumps and crazy stunts. I'm taking wushu classes now and learning moves like the tiger fist and snake strike. It's so fun! Someday I want to be a kung fu action star just like Jet Li or Jackie Chan.And who can forget about Chinese medicine? It sounds kind of weird sipping herbal tea made of tree bark or eating dried sea horses to cure an illness. But it's an ancient healing system that's still used today alongside modern medicine in China. I'm glad we have both!Another big part of Chinese culture is the value placed on respect, especially respect for elders and ancestors. We have those little red stamps with our names on them that we use like asignature to show respect when writing. And every year for the Qingming festival, we visit our ancestors' graves, burn incense and leave offerings of fruits and flowers to honor them.Family is also hugely important in Chinese culture. We have big multi-generation households where grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all live together. During holidays the whole extended family gathers for huge banquet meals. At my grandma's house, there's always 20+ people crammed around the table passing dishes back and forth. It's so lively and fun with all my cousins!One more fascinating part of Chinese culture is the zodiac animals. I was born in the year of the monkey, which means I'm supposed to be clever, curious, and a trickster according to the signs. My best friend Xiaoyu is a rooster, which fits since he's always a little feisty! We love figuring out what animal sign matches each of our personalities.Phew, that was a lot of stuff about Chinese culture! I could go on and on about things like shadow puppetry, Peking opera, ink wash paintings, mah-jongg, feng shui...but I think you get the idea.篇4Traditional Chinese CultureHave you ever wondered what life was like a long time ago in ancient China? I sure have! China has such a rich history and culture going back thousands of years. Let me tell you about some of the coolest parts of traditional Chinese culture that I've learned about.One of the most amazing things from ancient China in my opinion is the Terracotta Army. These life-sized soldier statues were buried underground near the tomb of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang over 2,200 years ago! Can you imagine how incredible it must have been for the farmers who accidentally discovered them in 1974 to be digging and suddenly come across this hidden army of thousands of detailed warrior figures?Each terracotta soldier statue is unique, with different facial features, heights, uniforms and even hairstyles. Experts believe there may have been as many as 8,000 soldiers in total along with hundreds of horses and chariots. It's mind-blowing that they were able to create such lifelike sculptures so long ago without modern tools and technology. The Terracotta Army was built to protect the emperor in the afterlife - the ancient Chinese had very interesting beliefs about the world beyond our own.Speaking of interesting beliefs, traditional Chinese culture has given us many influential philosophies like Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Confucius was a famous philosopher who lived around 500 BC. His teachings promoted principles like respect for elders, education, kindness, and proper behavior. Confucianism places a lot of importance on filial piety - honoring and obeying your parents and ancestors. It makes sense that families and having children to carry on the family name have historically been so valued in Chinese culture.Taoism is another very old and influential Chinese philosophy and religion dating back over 2,500 years. The concept of the Tao or "Way" refers to living in harmony with the natural order of the universe. Taoists believe in the complementary forces of yin and yang, balance, "going with the flow," and avoiding resistance or struggle. Many Taoist practices like meditation, tai chi, and feng shui are still popular today as ways to achieve calmness and peace of mind.Buddhism originated in India but became extremely popular in China after being introduced around 2,000 years ago. It teaches the Four Noble Truths about suffering and how to find peace by following the Eightfold Path. Buddhist temples, artwork, and beliefs spread widely across ancient Chinese lands. All ofthese philosophies have profoundly shaped traditional Chinese culture, values and ways of thinking.Another fascinating part of traditional Chinese culture is traditional medicine and health practices. Chinese herbal medicine uses natural ingredients like plants, roots, minerals and animal products to treat illnesses and promote wellness. Some popular herbs used are ginseng, ginger, cinnamon and different mushroom varieties which are thought to have healing properties and effects on the body.Acupuncture is another ancient Chinese medicinal technique where thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body. It's used to relieve pain, reduce stress and address other health issues. The practice is based on restoring the proper flow of chi or life energy through the body's meridians or energy pathways. Personally, the idea of having needles stuck in me doesn't sound too fun! But millions swear by acupuncture's benefits.Speaking of things from Chinese culture that seem a little strange initially, let's talk about traditional Chinese foods! China is the birthplace of many different delicious dishes, snacks and drinks we enjoy today like dumplings, noodles, tofu, fortune cookies and tea. But they also have some delicacies that might seem pretty bizarre if you're not used to them.For example, century eggs are duck, chicken or quail eggs that have been preserved for several months in a mixture of salt, lime, ash and rice hulls. This causes the eggs to take on a gray, creamy texture and distinct pungent aroma. They don't look too appetizing to me but are considered a delicacy in China! Bird's nest soup is another interesting Chinese dish made from the saliva nests of cave-dwelling birds. The nests are dissolved into a broth and served as a thick, gelatinous soup.And then there's stinky tofu, a popular snack made from fermented tofu that has been allowed to develop a powerful, foul odor and taste. Sources say it's meant to smell rotten but taste delicious – I'm not so sure I'd want to try it based on the name alone! At least I know I definitely love regular tofu, dumplings and noodle dishes. I'll leave those other "delicacies" to the adventurous eaters out there.No overview of Chinese culture though would be complete without mentioning the performing arts that have developed over thousands of years. Classical Chinese dance is extremely elaborate and expressive, incorporating tumbling, acrobatics, mimicry of martial arts moves and traditional costumes, props and storytelling. Popular dance styles include dance dramas, fandances and the famed classic Chinese lion dances performed during festivals and celebrations to bring good luck.I had the chance to see an amazing acrobatic performance when my family visited China a few years ago – the feats the acrobats and contortionists could do with their bodies were unbelievable! Spinning plates on poles balanced on their feet, twisting into human knots and towers, everything was so graceful yet also intense and thrilling to watch.Traditional Chinese music, opera and puppetry are other iconic art forms that have flourished in China for centuries. I really enjoy the melodic tones of instruments like the guqin (zither), pipa (lute), dizi (flute), and various gongs and chimes used in different musical arrangements and operas. Maybe I'll take up learning one of those instruments someday as a way to further connect with my cultural roots.As you can tell, there is just so much richness and history when it comes to Chinese traditions and customs. I feel very proud of my heritage after learning more about ancient Chinese innovations, beliefs, arts, foods and practices. Things like paper, the compass, gunpowder, and woodblock printing were all invented by the Chinese centuries before the rest of the world discovered them.Traditional Chinese culture has had such a profound global impact in science, technology, philosophy, medicine and so many other areas of human civilization. I encourage everyone to take some time to appreciate the wonderful traditions, legends, inventions and values that have been passed down over the millennia. Confucius was a really wise philosopher who lived over 2,500 years ago during the Zhou Dynasty. He had all these brilliant ideas about how people should behave, show respect, be kind, and create a harmonious society. His teachings became the basisfor Chinese culture and values on relationships, etiquette, and ethics. Pretty much every Chinese person learns about Confucian principles in school. Things like filial piety (respect for your parents and elders), rituals, hierarchies, and social orders are all influenced by Confucianism.Another super important part of traditional Chinese culture is the food! Yum! Chinese food is just the best - it's so flavorful and there's such an incredible variety of dishes. The roots of Chinese cuisine go back centuries and centuries. Things like noodles, dumplings, rice, soy sauce, and tea have been around forever. Different regions of China have their own unique styles of cooking too based on the local ingredients and customs. Like in Sichuan, the food is really spicy. In Guangdong, they eat a lot of seafood. I love all the dim sum in Cantonese cuisine! My favorite Chinese foods are dumplings, Kung Pao chicken, and hand-pulled noodles.Chinese holidays and festivals are so vibrant and fun to celebrate too! The biggest one is Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival. We get together with family, decorated with red colors, set off firecrackers and fireworks, and eat lots of delicious food. Kids receive red envelopes with money inside too! The lantern festival at the end of New Year celebrations is beautifulwith all the glowing lanterns. Other major holidays are Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Qing Ming Festival. Each one has its own special traditions and meanings behind them.Speaking of meanings, Chinese characters and calligraphy are a huge part of the culture. Written Chinese has existed for over 3,000 years! The characters are so visually interesting and artistic. Some of them depict the actual object or idea, while others combine multiple symbols. Calligraphy is regarded as one of the highest artforms in China. Calligraphers have to meticulously practice different styles and techniques to create beautiful handwritten characters and pieces. I've tried my hand at calligraphy and it's really difficult! You have to control the brush strokes perfectly.Traditional arts and crafts have played an indispensable role in Chinese culture too. Things like silk weaving, pottery and porcelain making, jade carving, kite making, paper cutting, and embroidery have been popular for ages. Artists spend years mastering the intricate skills and detail work required in these crafts. Chinese lacquerware decorated with beautiful designs is really famous too. Traditional arts utilize imagery and symbolism from ancient folklore and nature. You see motifs like dragons, phoenix birds, peonies, bamboo, and more incorporated intopottery, textiles, and decorative objects. It's all so beautifully symbolic!I can't talk about Chinese culture without mentioning the kung fu! Martial arts movies have made kung fu famous around the world, but the origins go back over 2,000 years. There are tons of different styles of kung fu like Shaolin, Tai Chi, Wing Chun, and more. They each have their own sort of animal influences and combat techniques. In addition to just being awesome for self-defense, martial arts promote discipline, patience, and philosophy. Bruce Lee is probably the most legendary kung fu movie star ever! His movies were just so epic and full of incredible fight scenes and stunts. I love trying to imitate some of the kung fu moves, even though I'm not very skilled yet.One final crucial element of traditional Chinese culture is medicine and traditional remedies. For centuries, the Chinese have used herbal medicines and ancient therapies to treat sicknesses and promote overall wellness. Things like acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, and bizarre-sounding remedies like dried sea horses or deer antler actually work according to traditional medicine principles! There are tons of potent herbs, roots, and natural ingredients used to make healing medicinestoo. While Western medicine utilizes more modern techniques today, traditional Chinese medicine is still widely practiced.Phew! As you can see, Chinese traditional culture covers so many facets - philosophy, cuisine, celebrations, writing, arts, martial arts, medicine, and more. The roots and traditions stretch back for millennia. It's pretty incredible how much of the ancient customs and symbolic meanings are still preserved in modern China. While technology and global influences have changed society, the fundamentals of Chinese culture remain strong. I'm really proud of my cultural heritage and all the amazing traditions! It makes me feel connected to an extensive historical legacy. At the same time, it's awesome to see how China balances the old and new. There's a unique dynamism happening where ancient wisdom coexists alongside innovation and modern life. As a middle school student, I find China's traditional culture fascinating and full of beauty, wisdom, andwonder. Let me tell you about some of the coolest parts of traditional Chinese culture that I've learned about.One of the most iconic symbols of China is the Great Wall. This massive stone wall snakes over 13,000 miles across mountains and deserts in northern China. It was built over many centuries by millions of workers to protect ancient Chinese empires from invading armies and nomadic groups. While the labor to construct it was incredibly difficult and many lives were lost, the Great Wall stands today as an amazing architectural and engineering marvel. I dream of one day hiking along a portion of the Great Wall and seeing its winding path stretch out before me.Chinese art and architecture contains some of the most beautiful and intricate designs in the world. Traditional buildings often have upturned curved roofs with colorful decorations. The roofs are meant to represent the curvature of the heavens above. Pagodas, which are multilevel towers, use similar curving roofs and ornate carvings. Chinese gardens are also renowned for their meticulous designs with pagodas, ponds, bridges, and precisely pruned plantings meant to achieve a sense of natural harmony.I love learning about ancient Chinese inventions and how they demonstrate the ingenuity of the people. Things we use every day like paper, gunpowder, the compass, and woodblockprinting were all invented in ancient China centuries before the West. Can you imagine going through school and not having any books, notebooks, or pencils to write with? That's what the world was like before the Chinese invented paper and bookmaking. Same with navigation - imagine setting off on a long voyage over water without a compass to find your way.Chinese medicine is another ancient tradition going back over 2,500 years. The Chinese have an entirely different philosophy and system for maintaining health and treating illnesses than Western medicine. They view the body in terms of vital energy flows and strive to achieve balanced qi (or chi). Some traditional techniques include herbal remedies, acupuncture, massage, and practices like tai chi. While it may seem strange to us, traditional Chinese medicine worked to heal people for centuries and many of the herbal treatments have proven effective even by modern scientific standards.Two of my favorite elements of Chinese tradition are its rich mythology and classical literature. I love reading the ancient stories and fables about the origins of the world, celestial beings, mythical creatures, folk heroes, and more. Some of the most famous tales include the complex mythological saga encompassing the creation of the universe and earth by Pangu,the journey of the Monkey King who antagonizes the heavens, and the epic legend of the ghost-quelling monk Xuanzang. These fantastic stories are filled with amazing feats, spiritual insights, and talking, shapeshifting animals and deities unlike anything in Greek or Roman myths.As for Chinese literature, the country produced some of the earliest novels, poems, and philosophical writings known to man. Two of the greatest novels are Journey to the West, an adventure tale that incorporates the Monkey King myth, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, an epic work set in the turmoil of the Han dynasty's fall. These massive novels are regarded as two of the four classic Chinese novels that every scholar was expected to study. Other famous Chinese writings I've read include the philosophical teachings of Confucius and Laozi, the poems of Li Bai, and the traditional folk tale Journey to the West. China's long literary tradition often centered on profound wisdom about human nature, governing with justice and morality, and observing harmony with the natural world.Two other areas of Chinese tradition I find really interesting are Chinese martial arts and traditional festivals/holidays. Today, more and more foreigners learn mandarin, which is a good sign that China plays the important role in the world. As foreigners study Chinese culture, they are attracted by the variety. Chinese culture is profound. The Confucius Institute is around the world. Many foreigners learn Chinese culture and language, hoping to find cooperation with Chinese businessmen, because they know that the future chance is here. I learn Chinese culture since I went to school, but I still feel that I have a lot to learn. China has a history of more than 5,000 years, so I am so eager to learn more about its culture. Some day, I can present the culture to the foreign friends.今天，越来越多的外国人学习汉语，这是中国在世界上占着重要位置的表现。
