Instead, I read a book on dozens of devices(设备). I was not trying to set a Guinness world record. I wanted to answer a question I often hear:which e-reader or tablet (平板) is the best for reading books? So I set out to try them all, reading a chapter on each:the Amazon Kindle, the first and second generation Apple iPads and mobile phones. T o be fair, I also read a chapter in that old-fashioned form — an old print paperback. The book I chose was The Alienist. For the first chapter, I turned to an Amazon Kindle. Shopping on Amazon for the Kindle is simple; you go to Amazon’s Web site and buy the book, which is then sent to any devices with Kindle software installed(安装). Reading on the Amazon Kindle is a joy in many aspects. The Kindle is light. Its six-inch screen is the perfect size for reading, and reading on its black and white E Ink display doesn’t harm your e yes. Battery life is outstanding; on average you charge the device only once a month. My only complaint with the Kindle design is the placement of the keyboard at the bottom of the device. Amazon’s CEO has noted during past product announcements that the keyboard is there to help people take notesor search. But to me,it seems like a waste of space.Despite the small screen on a mobile phone, I find reading on one to be simple and satisfactory. All of the mobile phones on which I read chapters felt somewhat similar; although screen brightness and the size of the phone’s screen did vary.If I had wanted to, I could have bought my book through dozens of e-book apps (应用程序)in the Apple App Store. Most are free and offer access to thousands of free e-books or paid versions. But the big downside for many is that you can read them only on Apple devices. Both iPads 1&2 offer an immersive(沉浸式)reading experience. I found myself jumping back and forth between my book and the Web, looking up old facts and pictures of New York City. I also found myself being sucked into the wormhole of the Internet and a few games of Angry Birds rather than reading my book. For the last chapters of the book, I read the paperback, which is still my favourite choice.Since we are comparing devices so I guess I need to choose one. In the end it might come down to Kindle. But if money is tight, go for print. My used paperback cost only$4 from Amazon.25.If the writer were short of money, he would prefer ______.A. a print paperbackB. an Apple iPadC. a mobile phoneD. an Amazon Kindle26.According to the passage, which of the following statements on the Amazon Kindle is NOT true?A. Its battery can last for a long time.B. Its keyboard is kept in the proper position.C. It is easy to carry and the screen size is proper.D. It is comfortable for eyes because of its E Ink display.27.A possible customer would not buy iPads 1 & 2 for reading because ______.A. most e-book apps must be downloaded firstB. only paid-version e-books can be read on itC. much information is lost at times when readingD. attention is easily taken away when reading on itCHOLIDAY FUN AT THE POWERHOUSE500 HARRIS STREETULTIMO ·TELEPHONE (02)9270111Join in the holiday fun at the powerhouse this month linked to our new exhibition, Evolution & Revolution:Chinese dress 1700s to now.DON’T FORGET our other special event, the Club Med Circus School which is part of the Circus(马戏团)!150 years of circus in Australia exhibition experience!◆Chinese Folk Dancing:Colorful Chinese dance and musical performances by The Chinese Folk Dancing School of Sydney.Dances include:the Golden and the Chinese drum dance.A feature will be the Qin dynasty Emperor’s co unt dance. Also included is a show of face painting for Beijing opera performances.Sunday June29 and Wednesday July2 in the Turbine Hall, at 11:30 a.m.& 1:30 p.m.◆Australian Chinese Children’s Arts Theatre:Well-known children’s play experts from Shanghai lead this dynamic youth group.Performances include Chinese fairy tales and plays. What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistake belief that-one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both areafraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.32.What does this text mainly talk about?petition helps to set up self-respect.B.People hold different opinions about competition.petition is harmful to personal quality development.D.Failures are necessary experience in competition.33.Some people favor competition because they think it __.A.pushes society forwardB.builds up a sense of prideC.improves social abilitiesD.develops people's relationship34.The underlined phrase "the most vocal”in Paragraph 3 refers to those whoA.try their best to winB.highly value competitionC.are strongly against competitionD.mostly rely on others for success35.Which viewpoint does the author agree to?A.Self-worth relys on winning.petition leads to unfriendly relationship.C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.第二节(共5小题每小题2 分共10分)七选五ReforestationAround the world there is an increase in the demand for reforestation. This is because theconsumption of the forests has affected not only the animals living in the area but also the people. And reforestation is about the rebuilding of the forests that have been severely destroyed. It can offer a lot of benefits when the recreation is successful.36 This includes collecting seedlings(幼苗)that are native in the area to make sure that there is a natural reconstruction of the area. Some additional trees which are not native in the area also need to be planted.37 The importance of having multiple species of trees is considered to make sure that the needs of other species that will live and grow in the area are met. Destroying a forest is easy but rebuilding it is really hard. 38 The plan must include accurate spacing on plants and trees. This is to ensure that they won’t cover each other while they grow.39The forest greatly helps in the reduction of the air pollution.Trees are responsible for the production of oxygen and absorption of carbon dioxide. 40 It is there for a reason just like everyone else on this planet. There cannot be a better way to restore the balance of nature than to increase the forest area.We must remember that the forest is a natural habitat of wide variety of animals and plants. In this manner, there is no substitute for reforestation.A.And global warming will speed up the destruction of forests.B.Keep in mind that you can’t just plant the seedlings anywhere.C.Recreations won’t work until all these details have been considered.D.So a good plan is needed to make the reforestation a successful one.E.The forest also protects us from typhoons and other natural disasters.F.There are many things to be done when it comes to this type of effort.G.It is important to make sure that they are suited to the climate and the type of soil.第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45 分)第一节完形填空(共20 小题每题1.5分满分30分)My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. I had agreed to teach all struggling students in need of critical intervention(介入). I knew what lay ahead — tough work hours overlaid with guilt, consumed with essays that needed feedback and lesson plans with best practice strategies. No wonder people always acknowledge my teaching career with, “I'm_glad_it's_you_and_not_me.”Suddenly, my mind transported me to my first few years of teaching.“Peter Potter,” I called from my name list, trying to control my laughter. “Laughlin McLaughlin?” Surely these were not real names.“Emotionally disabled... keeps them separated from the other kids...,” the vice headmaster commanded. This was my first teaching assignment.Surely this year could never be as discouraging as those first few. In my new classroom, I looked into the face of Jason. At eleven, his mother was killed in an accident, leaving him with physical, academic, and certainly emotional scars. I looked at another student, Robert, standing at the door; my vice headmaster asked if I would take him, even though he was an eleventh grader in my tenth grade class. But then there were — and are — stories of success — of Dustin, in Graduate School for Electrical and Computer Engineering; of Michael, now a teacher in a city school; of Willie... I thought of the thousands of students whose lives have touched mine far more than I could have ever touched theirs.I broke from my daydream, a smile spreading across my face. Sadness, tears, challenges, fears —yes, teaching is filled with all of these — yet, it is also filled with laughter and smiles, hope, dreams, and rewards beyond measure.“I'm glad it's you and not me.” Those words resounded in my mind once again.4.What might the author's job be like?A.Easy. But get closer and the significance of the 140m-long tubes becomes apparent :they are the beginning of an entirely new industry in the hunt for clean power.Yesterday ,the red snake-like objects were laid as part of the world's. first wave-power station, off the coast of the northern Portuguese town of Agucadoura. The project marks the latest step in Portugal's moves to become a leader in developing renewable energy sources. At the heart of the power station are three round wave energy converters (转换器),designed and built by a British company Pelamis Wave Power .Moving up and down on the endless supply of waves inthe open sea, they change the motion into electricity, without sending out any of the carbon dioxide responsible for warming the planet. The Pelamis wave machines will produce 2.25 Megawatt(MW 兆瓦), enough for the annual needs of about 1,500 homes. Eventually, the station will be expanded with a further 25 Pelamis machines so that it can produce up to 21MW of power. That. will save 60,000 tons of CO2 per year compared with a conventional fossil fuel plant."The future of wave energy starts today," said Manuel Pinho, Portugal's economics minister."Portugal wants to be good in renewable energy. We are among the top five in the world ,and we are just in the beginning of the process. We think this can create an industrial revolution and a lot of opportunities for jobs and research and we want to lead the trend."In addition to this flagship wave power ,the Portuguese are spending large amounts of money on other renewable technologies. In the past three years, the country has enlarged 3 times its hydroelectric capacity and 4 times its wind power sources-northern Portugal has the world's biggest wind farm. They are already spending &250m on more than 2,500 solar panels to build the world's largest solar farm near the small town of Moura in eastern Portugal. It will have twice the area of London's Hyde Park and supply 45MW of electricity each year ,enough to power 30,000 homes.8.What are the tubes in the water used to do?A. To decorate the coast.B. To hunt for ocean animals.C. To take advantage of the waves.D. To prevent huge waves in the ocean.9.How will the wave power station benefit the country?A. There will be less unemployment.B. Portugal is short of renewable energy.C. Portugal's solar plant will be as large as London's Hyde Park.D. Portugal will bring in technologies to develop wave and solar energy.11.What is the best title for the text?A. The Future of Renewable Energy Starts TodayB. Portugal's Moves to Employ Ocean's PowerC. The Fossil Energy Is to Be out of DateD. Clean Energy Is on Its Way in PortugalDDespite the negative international headlines that have hit Huawei over the past few months, its consumer business continues to thrive. The Chinese technology giant replaced Apple as the secondlargest smartphone player by global market share last year. It's firmly the biggest vendor(销售商) in China.Chinese consumers say they've been attracted to Huawei's newest features, the price points and the fact that it's a domestic brand.“Using Huawei's mobile phones is supporting domestic brands. We hope our brands can go international,” Vikey, a Guangzhoubased Huawei user, told CNBC. She added that Huawei phones are “costeffective” and have good features while iPhones are “more of a trend”. One of the key features that Huawei introduced was a triplelens camera on its P20 Pro, which was launched last year. For the next 12 months, the iPhone lacks one of the most appealing features of current winners in the Chinese smartphone market, the triplelens camera. The Huawei P20 Pro led the march.Retailers (零销售) are slashing (大幅消减) iPhone prices across China as consumers say the phones aren't worth the cost. Apple's latest iPhone models are facing huge discounts in China as retailers try to sell the struggling devices. That comes as the topoftheline Apple smartphones have posted poor China sales on what experts say are toohigh prices for the world's largest smartphone market and a lack of innovative features compared to local competitors like Huawei. The technology giant itself acknowledged earlier this month that unexpectedly low sales in the Chinese market would likely lead to worsethananticipated first quarter profits. One of the most recent iPhone cost cuts in the country came from Suning, a large Chinese retailer, which changed the price of the 128GB version of the iPhone XR from 6,999 yuan to 5,799 yuan — a 1,200 yuan discount.Other retailers in China are also putting their iPhones on sale. Sunion, an Apple reseller, was advertising 700 yuan off for both the 128GB and 256GB versions of the iPhone XR. Ecommerce site Pinduoduo, which allows thirdparties to sell products, also had hefty(很大的) discounts across all of the latest iPhone models.12.What does the underlined word “thrive” probably mean in the first paragraph?A.Reduce. B.Remain.C.Threaten. D.Increase.13.Which of the following is one of the Huawei's characters?A.More of a trend. B.Costeffective.C.Toohigh prices. D.A lack of innovative features.14.Which of the following is a medium?A.Suning. B.Sunion.C.CNBC. D.Pinduoduo.15.What can we infer from the text?A.Updating of technology counts.B.Advertising of the products matters.C.The sale strategy is invisible.D.The iPhone still leads the trend in China.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

French lawmakers passed a law on July 31, 2020, banning students 15 and under from bringing smartphones and tablets to school, or at least requiring they be turned off at school. Officials in support of the new rule described the policy as a way to protect children from addictive habits and to safeguard the sanctity of the classroom.“We know there is a phenomenon of screen addiction,” education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said. “Our main role is to protect students. It is a fundamental role of education, and this law allows it.”The law, however, makes exceptions for educational use, after-school activities and for students with disabilities. French high schools can choose to force a less-strict ban on Internet- connected devices.Even before the new policy was voted in, French law carried out in 2020 prohibited students from using their phones while class was in session. But during the 2020 French presidential election, Emmanuel Macron promised to force a school ban on phones entirely. This isn’t the first French law designed to beat back the influences of digital technology in everyday life. In 2020 the government passed a law requiring French companies to draft rules that limited work emails and work-related technology outside the office. Referred to as the “right to disconnect,” French offic ials said the law aimed to reduce job-relatedstress and prevent employee burnout.“Employees physically leave the office, but they do not leave their work. They remain attached by a kind of electronic tie,” said Benoît Hamon, former French education minis ter. “The texts, the messages, the emails: they control the life of the individual to the point where he or she eventually breaks down.”4. What’s the purpose of the law passed on July 31, 2020?A. To improve the eyesight of school students.B. To reduce the heavy burden of primary school students.C. To prevent students getting addicted to electronic devices.D. To help students use the mobile phones properly at schools.5. What can we learn from the text?A. Disabled students have no ability to use electronic devices.B. President Macron is in favor of smartphone use in school.C. The “right to disconnect” aims to help employees with their work.D. Primary students are facing stricter banning than high school students.6. The French government passed a law in 2020 because ________.A. work-related technology occupied too much of individual lifeB. some officials found it was a waste of time to use digital technologyC. employees had no time to use their electronic devices after workD. employees had the ability to finish their work entirely in the office7. Which column of a newspaper may the passage come from?A. ScienceB. LawC. HealthD. Human and societyCUntil the 1990s coffee was rarely served in China except at luxury hotels aimed at foreigners. When Starbucks opened its first shop there in 1999, it was far from clear that the country’s tea-drinkers would take to such adifferent and usually more costly source of caffeine. Starbucks tried to attract customers to coffee’s bitter taste by pro moting milk and sugar-heavy concoctions(调和) such as Frappuccinos. But coffee has become fashionable among the middle class in China. Starbucks now has about 3, 800 shops in China more than in any other country outside America. Statista, a business-intelligence portal(门户网站), says the roast coffee market in China is growing by more than10 %year. Starbucks and its rivals see big opportunities for expanding there. So too, however, do home-grown competitors. A major new presence is Luckin Coffee, Beijing- based chain. Since its founding less than two years ago, it has opened more than 2,300 shops. On May 17th Luckin’s initial public offering on the Nasdaq stockmarket raised more than $570m,giving it a value of about $4bn.Luckin’s remarkable growth is sign of cha nge. No longer do Chinese consumers see coffee as such a luxury. Most of Luckin’s shops are merely kiosks where busy white-collar workers pick up their drinks, having ordered them online. Super-fast delivery can also be arranged through the company’s app. Independent coffee shops are springing up. The growth is striking considering the country’s reputation for its tea-drinking culture where many residents like to relax in teahouses sipping tea served gracefully. But the two markets are different. The teahouses tend to cater to older people who like to spend long hours playing mahjong and gossiping. At the coffee shops it is rare to see anyone over 40. Young people use them for socialising, but much of their interaction is online -sharing photos of their drinks and of the coffee-making equipment. An option on the Chinese rating app Dianping allows users to search for wanghong ("internet viral") coffee houses.8. How did Starbucks try to appeal to Chinese consumers?A. By reducing the price slightly.B. By introducing the benefits of coffee.C. By making coffee taste not so bitter.D. By promoting its products effectively.9. What does Luckin Coffee’s growth suggest?A. People tend to like coffee’s bitter taste.B. People’s views on coffee-drinking have changed.C. People in China can afford coffee now.D. Tea is no longer part of Chinese culture.10. What does the underlined word “kiosks” in paragraph 4 mean?A. Places where people can drink beer.B. Restaurants where food can be taken away.C. Shops aimed at people who like drinking.D. Small shops where drinks are sold.11. What is the best title for the text?A. Coffee is taking off in China.B. Tea-drinking is not popular.C. Coffee or tea, which do you prefer?D. Coffee has beco me people’s favorite in China.DChina became the first country to clone a monkey using non-reproductive cells, reducing the need to keep lab monkeys and paving the way for more accurate, effective, and affordable animal tests for new drugs.By December of 2020, Chinese scientists had created two clone macaques named "Zhong Zhong" and "Hua Hua" by nuclear transferring of somatic cells -- any cell in the organism other than reproductive cells. This was thesimilar technology used to create the famous clone sheep Dolly in 1996.Tetra, a rhesus monkey born in 1999, is the world’s first ever-cloned monkey, but it was done using a simpler method called embryo splitting, but it could only generate four cloned offspring at a time and cannot be genetically modified to suit experimental needs, said Pu Muming, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the director of Institute of Neuroscience, CAS. "Cloning a monkey using somatic cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate(灵长类)that shares its genetic makeup, therefore all of its complexity, with humans." Pu Muming said."For drug and other lab tests, scientists have to purchase monkeys from all over the world, which is costly, bad for the environment and produces inaccurate results because each monkey might have different genes, " Pu said. "By cloning monkeys using somatic cells, we can mass produce large numbers of genetically same offspring in a short time, and even change their genes to suit our needs," he added. "This can save time, cut down experiment costs, and produce more accurate results, leading to more effective medicine."Sun Qiang, director of the non-human primate research facility at the institute, said most of the drug trials are currently done on lab mice. However, drugs that work on mice might not work or even have severe side effects on humans because the two species are so different. "Monkeys and Humans are both primates, so they are much closely related and testing on Monkeys is supposed to be as effective as testing on humans," he said. This is especially useful in testing drugs for neural diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, metabolic and immune system disease, and tumor, he added. "This achievement will help China lead the world research in an international science project related to neural(神经的)mapping of primate brains,”he said. However, bio labs from the United States, Japan, andEuropean countries are also very able, and they will quickly catch up to China after the monkey cloning technology is made public, Sun added. " This means we have to innovate continuously and work extra harder this year to stay ahead," he said.12. What is special about China's cloning monkey?A.It transferred cells in the lab.B.It creates two monkeys at a time.C.It adopts a method of embryo splitting.D. It uses non-reproductive cells.13. Why do scientists clone monkeys?A. To keep monkeys from being endangered.B. To test new medicines on them.C.To find the side effects of medicines.D. To find a cure for mental diseases.14 Which of the following is True?A.Cloning a monkey using somatic cells is easy.B. Scientists have easy access to monkeys.C. Using somatic cells is more expensive to clone.D. Using somatic cells to clone monkeys makes it possible to produce more effective medicine.15. What Sun said in the last paragraph suggests__________.A.they are determined to catch up to AmericaB. they try to avoid competition from other countriesC. they aren't satisfied with what they have achievedD. they have to keep the monkey-cloning technology a secret第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them. One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (瘫痪)her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paperup, put the paint brush in his mouth and began to paint. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read:“Thank you for helping me walk.”My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. The King Pacific Lodge in British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest shows that if enough care and attention is taken, the task is within the reach of any tourist provider.Unlike many other hotel building projects, no trees were cut down and no land was wasted in order to build it. The Lodge does not have the same location but sits on a floating boat pulled into the sea bay in May, till September. Those wishing to stay in one of its seventeen rooms must access it by boat or seaplane. Each guest staying at the Lodge is charged 3% tax on the protection of the natural resources, but is given the chance to sight whales and bears. And since these are the main attractions of the area and of the Lodge, the management is well aware that in order to stay in business they must leave the area untouched. In 2000, the Lodge management signed an agreement with the native(本土的)Gitga'at people. Together they work for the benefit of the area. The Lodge recognizes the native tribe (部落)as the owners of the land, pays the tribe for the use of their land and even supports the native youth and employs the tribe's people. They, in turn, teach the newcomers about the local culture. The King Pacific Lodge is one of a growing number of tourism companies that manage to minimize their environmental effect to win the approval(批准)of the local government where they set up their business. These companies use environmentally friendly solutions to problems, and are careful to use natural resources and protect endangered animals. Realizing how destructive tourism can be, they want to avoid the love-it-to-death effect of tourism and leave alighter environmental footprint.8. From the passage, we know that the King Pacific Lodge______________.A. follow other hotels’ building projectsB. is less enjoyable than might be expectedC. is situated far away from an important wildernessD. has been created after careful consideration9. According to paragraph 3, we learn that some of the native people ____________.A. want to learn the newcomers' cultureB. are not willing to sell their land .C. are employed by local government to work for the Lodge.D. may have the chance to work at the Lodge.11. According to the passage, the tourist industry__________.A. will always do harm to the environmentB. ignores the importance of environmentally friendly tourismC. can limit the damage it does to the environmentD. has a disagreement with the local communitiesDThere are usually few things people want to do less than housework. But while washing the dishes and dusting the shelves can seem like a troublesome thing, a new study has shown just how important they are to general health and happiness. In fact, scientists now believe cleaning the home is more important to mental and physical health than other factors, such as the area you live in or how much you earn. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University say the benefit of housework is because of the exercise it takes to get the daily job done, which in turn affects mental health.Dr Wright, at the university’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and a research team wanted to find out how income, education, environment and health behaviors, like smoking and exercise, affect an older person’s health. The study’s 337 participants, from 65 to 94 years old, had to have at least one chronic (慢性的)illness. They also had to have physical restrictions (限制)that prevented them from doing at least one basic daily task, such as bathing and dressing.Dr Wright said she was surprised to learn that housework and keeping their property(财产)affected the participants’ physical and mental health more than other factors. “House cleaning kept them up and moving,” said Dr Wright. “A clean environment is helpful to treat some illnesses. What I found was that neighborhood poverty did not directly affect mental or physical health.”The study provided evidence that Wright had observed(观察) in her visits:people living in a chaotic (混乱的) environment seemed less satisfied than those in a place that was neat and tidy. Wright hopes the study shows how important it is for older adults with disabilities andchronic illnesses to continue physical activities, such as doing reaching exercises while sitting, arm curls and standing up and sitting down in a chair.12.We can infer from paragraph 1 that _________ .A.some people are too busy to do houseworkB.some people can do less housework than beforeC.some people do not think highly of doing houseworkD.some people have difficulty in doing housework13. When doing housework, people can _________ .a. learn to shareb. finish daily taskc. do some exercised. learn to be responsiblee. enjoy staying with familyf. live happily and healthilyA.a. c. eB.b, c, fC.c. d. fD.d. e. f14.Dr Wright and her team do their research______________.A. By observing the changes of the participants behavior.B. By choosing those who are a little weak as their participants.C. By trying different treatments on the participants illnesses.D.By restricting the participants moving areas to certain places.15. The passage is mainly telling us that _________ .A.the effective ways to do houseworkB.the different attitudes towards houseworkC.the advantages of doing houseworkD.the hidden meanings of doing housework第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
