For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life. Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems, not only physically but also psychologically. Various activities will inspire the students to talk about ways to cope with stress and to be happy by using the words and expressions in this unit. For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life. Stress isn’t always bad. In small doses, it can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. But when you’re constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body pay the price.Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger--- whether i t’s real or ima gined--- the body’s defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process knownas the “fight-or-flight” reaction, or the stress response. The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. The stress response also helps you rise to meet challenges. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration when you’re attempting the game-winning free throw, or drives you to study for an exam when you’d rather be watching TV.But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life.Effects of chronic stressThe body doesn’t distinguish between physical and psychological threats. When you’re stressed over a busy schedule, an argument with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body reacts just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you have a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress response ma y be “on” most of the time. The more your body’s stresssystem is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is to shut off.Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression. Many health problems are caused or exacerbated by stress, including:●Pain of any kind●Heart disease●Digestive problems●Sleep problems●Depression●Obesity●Autoimmune diseases●Skin conditions, such as eczemaTopic Preview1. You are expected to do it after class and check the answers on your own. It’s common sense that if you are extremely unhappy in your job, and you come home and dump on your spouse about it every day, it could start to wear on the relationship. So is the opposite true, then? 1) If you’re happy in your job,can your marriage actually improve? According to long-term research conducted by The Love Doctor Terri Orbuch, the answer is “yes”.Orbuch, who is author of “5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage from Good to Great,” has been following and observing hundreds of married couples for nearly a quarter century inorder to find out what makes marriages happy, strong and long lasting. She has found that there is a definite positive spillover 2) from work to marriage. Here are her four suggestions on putting this into practice: Suggestion 1: 3) Seek support and help from your spouse. If you’re having a problem at work, solicit advice from your spouse. Research shows that the need for assistance is one of the three basic needs of all people in relationships (intimacy and reassurance of one’s value are the other two). Seeking solutions to work-related problems together strengthens the ma rital bond and feeling that “we’re in this together.” Moreover, because your spouse knows you so well, he or she is likely to come up with valuable insights and feedback.Suggestion 2: 4) “Grow” in your job. A recent large-scale study in Harvard Business Review found that the No. 1 factor 5)that keeps employees happy and motivated in their jobs is “making progress.” Workers who are fulfilled and stimulated during the workday tend to be happier individuals, and much of that happiness gets transferred to their spouse at the end of the day.Suggestion 3: 6) Practice behaviors that relieve stress. Numerous studies have documented a link between workplacestress and poor health. The two most common workplace stressors are 7) feeling as if you haven’t been heard or supported, and 8) negative interpersonal work relationships. Find ways to express your needs, ask for assistance and manage conflicts at your job. Good health is sexy and attractive to a spouse, and so is an upbeat attitude.Suggestion 4: 9) Share your work life. Orbuch’s study found that the happiest marriages are ones in which partners feel their spouse regularly discloses information about his or her life, even details from work that might be deemed “boring.” The bonus: 10) Work life becomes interwoven with home life, promoting a satisfying feeling of work-life balance, which makes you happier overall.SourceAppendix A Supplementary Reading Unit 6 Psychological Health Useful Expressions。

新编大学英语4 unit 6 risks

Risks are always a matter of probability rather than certainty. (Para. 1-3)
comparison between hypochondria and anxiety about the risks of life:
Similarity Hypochon dria Difference

People begin to ask whether it is worthwhile for college students to do those sports.

Now work in groups to stage a talk show, one member acts as the host and other member the guests, discussing the problem.
What’s the difference and similarity between hypochondria and anxiety about risks?
Sample
Hypochondria, fear of disease and suspicious of being ill is like anxiety about risks in some way. Both are the result of partial information. But the big difference is that the hypochondriac can usually turn to a physician to clarify the whole situation. Then he knows clearly whether he has the suspected disease or not. As to the risks of life, the situation is not that simple, for risks are almost always a matter of probability rather than certainty.

Part Two: In-Class Reading >> Detailed Reading
For example, larger cars are generally safer than small ones in collisions. But how much safer? 7 The answer is that you are roughly twice as likely to die in a serious crash in a small car than in a large one. Yet larger cars generally cost more than small ones (and also use more gas, thus increasing the environmental risks!), so how do we decide when the reduced risks are worth the added costs? The ultimate risk avoider might, for instance, buy a tank or an armored car, thus minimizing the risk of death or injury in a collision. But is the added cost and inconvenience worth the difference in price, even supposing you could afford it? We cannot begin to answer such questions until we have a feel for the level of risks in question. So how do we measure the level of a risk? Some people seem to think that the answer is a simple number. We know, for instance, that about 25,000 people per year die in automobile accidents.

Unit-6-Risks新编大学英语第二版第四册课文翻译

Unit-6-Risks新编大学英语第二版第四册课文翻译

Unit-6-Risks新编大学英语第二版第四册课文翻译Unit 6 RisksRisks and YouAt some time or other, all of us have played the part of a hypochondriac, imagining that we have some terrible disease on the strength of very minor symptoms. Some people just have to hear about a new disease and they begin checking themselves to see if they may be suffering from it. But fear of disease is not our only fear, and neither is risk of disease the only risk we run. Modern life is full of all manner of threats-to our lives, our peace of mind, our families, and our future. And from these threats come questions that we must pose to ourselves: Is the food I buy safe? Are toys for my children likely to hurt them? Should my family avoid smoked meats? Am I likely to be robbed on vacations? Our uncertainties multiply indefinitely.Anxiety about the risks of life is a bit like hypochondria; in both, the fear or anxiety feeds on partial information. But one sharp difference exists between the two. The hypochondriac can usually turn to a physician to get a definitive clarification of the situation-either you have the suspected disease or you don't. It is much more difficult when anxiety about other forms of risk is concerned, because with many risks, the situation is not as simple.Risks are almost always a matter of probability rather than certainty. You may ask, "Should I wear a seat belt?" If you' re going to have a head-on collision, of course. But what if you get hit from the side and end up trapped inside the vehicle, unable to escape because of a damaged seat belt mechanism? So does this mean that you should spend the extra money for an air bag? Again, inhead-on collisions, it may well save your life. But what if the bag accidentally inflates while you are driving down the highway, thus causing an accident that would never have occurred otherwise? All of this is another way of saying that nothing we do is completely safe. There are risks, often potentially serious ones, associated with every hobby we have, every job we take, every food we eat-in other words, with every action. But the fact that there are risks associated with everything we are going to do does not, or should not, reduce us to trembling neurotics. Some actions are riskier than others. The point is to inform ourselves about the relevant risks and then act accordingly. For example, larger cars are generally safer than small ones in collisions. But how much safer? Theanswer is that you are roughly twice as likely to die in a serious crash in asmall car than in a large one. But is the added cost and inconvenience worth the difference in price, even supposing you could afford it?We cannot begin to answer such questions until we have a feel for the level of risks in question. So how do we measure the level of a risk? Some people seem to think that the answer is a simple number. We know, for instance, that about 25,000 people per year die inautomobile accidents. By contrast, only about 300 die per year in mine accidents and disasters. Does that mean that riding in a car is much riskier than mining? Not necessarily. The fact is that some 200 million Americans regularly ride in automobiles in the United States every year; perhaps 700,000 are involved in mining. The relevant figure that we need to assess a risk is a ratio or fraction. The numerator of the fraction tells us how many people were killed or harmed as the result of a particular activity over a certain period of time; the denominator tells us how many people were involved in that activity during that time. All risk levels are thus ratios or fractions, with values between 0 (no risk) and 1 (totally risky).By reducing all risks to ratios or fractions of this sort, we can begin to compare different sorts of risks-likemining versus riding in a car. The larger this ratio, that is, the closer it is to 1, the riskier the activity in question. In the case just discussed, we would find the relative safety of car travel and coal mining by dividing the numbers of lives lost in each by the number of people participating in each. Here, it is clear that the riskiness of traveling by car is about 1 death per 10,000 passengers; with mining, the risk level is about 4 deaths per 10,000 miners. So although far more people are killed in car accidents than in mining, the latter turns out to be four times riskier than the former. Those ratios enable us to compare the risks of activities or situations as different as apples and oranges. If you are opposed to risks, you will want to choose your activities by focusing on the small-ratio exposures. If you are reckless, then you are not likelyto be afraid of higher ratios unless they get uncomfortably large.Once we understand that risk can never be totally eliminated from any situation and that, therefore, nothing is completely safe, we will then see that the issue is not one of avoiding risks altogether but rather one of managing risks in a sensible way. Risk management requires two things: common sense and information about the character and degree of the risks we may be running.风险与你1 在说不定的某个时候,我们大家都曾充当过疑病症患者的角色,只凭一些轻微的症状便怀疑自己得了某种可怕的病。
