People's understanding of health also becomes deeper with the progress in scientific research. Recently the term "health" has come to have a wider meaning than it used to. It no longer means just the absence of illness. Today, health means the well-being of your body, your mind and your relationship with other people. This new concept of health is closely related to another term-quality of life. Quality of life is the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. Why has the emphasis of health shifted from the absence of disease to a broader focus on the quality of a person's life? One reason for this has to do with the length and conditions of life that people can now expect. Medical advances have made it possible for people today to live longer, healthier lives. Imagine for a moment that you were born in the year 1900. You could have expected on average to live until about the age of 47. In contrast, if you were born in the year 1999, you could expect to live to the age of 75.A 6. Progress in scientific research leads to people's deeper understanding of health.A) T B) FB 7. We can infer from the passage nowadays the emphasisof health has a broader focus because of improvements in the quality of food.A) T B) FA 10. This passage is mainly about different understandings of the term "health". A) T B) FPassage ThreeWe often use gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that the gestures can be understood in different ways.It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying. Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like ―he went pale and began to tremble‖ suggests that the man is either ve ry afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, ―he opened his eyes wide‖ is used to suggest anger in Chinese, whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese, surprise can be described in phrase like ―they stretched out their tongues!‖ ―Stretching out our tongue‖ in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike.Even in the same culture, people differ in their ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people’s faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do.D 11. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A) We can easily understand what people’s gestures mean.B) Words can be better understood by older people.C) Gestures can be understood by most people but words are not.D) It is difficult to tell what people’s gestures really meansometimes.D 12. People’s facial expressions may be misunderstood in different cultures because ______.A) people of different sexes may understand a gesture differentlyB) people speaking different languages have different facial expressionsC) people of different ages may have different interpretationsD) people from different cultures have different meanings about some facialexpressions.A 13. From the passage, we can conclude that _____.A) gestures can be used to express feelingsB) gestures can be more effectively used than words to express feelingsC) words are often more difficult to understand than gesturesD) gestures are used as frequently as words to express feelingsD 14. In the same culture, people ______.A) hardly ever fail to understand each other’s ideas and feelingsB) are equally intelligent even if they have different backgroundsC) almost all have the same understanding of the same thingD) may have different abilities to understand and express feelingsC 15. The best title for this passage can be ______.A) Gestures B) FeelingsC) Gestures and Feeling D) Culture and UnderstandingPassage FourThere are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.B 16. Our long-term goals mean a lot _______.A) if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsB) if we complete the short-term goalsC) if we have dreams of the futureD) if we put forward some plansD 17. New short-term goals are built upon_____.A) a daily basisB) your achievement in a weekC) current activitiesD) the goals that have been completedC 18. When we complete each step of our goals, _____.A) we will win final successB) we are overwhelmedC) we will build up our confidence to achieve successD) we should have strong desire for setting new goalsC 19. What is the main idea of this passage? _____A) Life is a dynamic thing.B) We should set up long-term goals.C) Different kinds of goals in life.D) The limitation of long-term goals.C 20. Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage? _____ A) The long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without achieving short-termgoals.B) The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.C) Life is a static thing, thus never allowing a long-term goal to limit us.D) We should often add new short-term goals to what have been completed.Part IV ClozeThe world is not only hungry; it is also thirsty for water. 大学英语综合教程4unit2passageB作文答案(新)

大学英语综合教程4unit2passageB作文答案(新)

⼤学英语综合教程4unit2passageB作⽂答案(新)Unit1Men Are Different from Women in Many WaysTraditionally, men and women were seen as opposite poles of a magnet. Men were strong, women were weak; men were the breadwinners, women were the homemakers; men were rational, women were emotional. In accordance with these beliefs, the men filled the leadership positions in society, as well as the majority of positions that required courage, clear-thinking and intellect. Women took on the nurturing, caring or supportive jobs such as nurse, teacher, assistant. However, modern society has greatly challenged these perceived differences between men and womenThese days gender roles are becoming less clear. Women are moving into the male-dominated occupations and proving that they can be equally successful in these fields. Moreover, some men are taking on the homemaker role and finding that it suits them. In some cultures, for example the Naxi culture of southwestern China, the women have always been the head of the household and responsible for both work and finance. So, are men and women really all that different? From the changing perspectives towards this question, it would seem that socialization plays a large role in defining masculinity and femininity in any given time period and in any given culture. In other words, perhaps men and women are not that different after all. Unit2Culture plays an important role in business. In different cultures there are different ideas about when meetings should be scheduled, how much notice should be given, Where people should be seated and how the negotiations should be proceed. During the negotiations there are also vast cultural differences in what is considered appropriate language, communication style and body language. For example, some culture value eye contact, others do not. Some cultures use 'yes' as an acknowledgement of what the person has said, other use 'yes' only for agreement.Social conventions of greeting, dressing, eating and entertaining also vary considerably amongst cultures and these are important to learn since a lot of business takes place while having dinner or enjoyingdrinks together. If a businessman attempts a cross-cultural business partnership without an adequate awareness of his associate's culture, he is likely to encounter misunderstanding and may even cause offence. This will damage and may even end the business relationship. Therefore, cultural differences must be carefully handled when doing business with people from different countries.Unit3Fighting Against PiracyNowadays the problem of piracy has become increasingly serious. Not only is there a serious lack of knowledge amongst the general public about piracy issues, but there is also an attitude of indifference. These days piracy is strongly evident in the commercial world in the wide availability of illegal VCDs and DVDs , the inclusion of Copyrighted pictures, web graphics, video clips and magazine portions in business presentations and the photocopying of books and articles for distribution without the author's permission. The negative consequences of piracy are two-fold. Firstly, the Copyright owners are likely to suffer significant financial losses. Secondly, the Copyright owner loses recognition, if the source of the material is unacknowledged. Therefore it is important for all citizens to become educated about piracy issues, to follow copyright laws in their own lives, and to encourage their colleagues and friends to do the same.Unit4The Importance of Learning Spoken EnglishIn today's modern world, learning spoken English has many advantages. English is fast becoming the international language of many fields, including politics, business and education. Not only is English used between native speakers and non-native speakers, but it is also used increasingly as a common language in interactions between non-native speakers.Having a good grasp of spoken English helps you to improve your chances of employment. These days, there are many foreign companies operating from China, and many Chinese-owned companies have trade links withforeign partners. These companies require speakers of English with sufficient language skills to ensure smooth business transactions.Spoken English also provides the chances for you to communicate socially with people from many other countries. It gives you a window into other cultures, and other perspectives of the world. It also gives you access to foreign films, TV programs, music and news. Therefore, spoken English is an important and fundamental tool in today's global village.Unit5Business EthicsCreating and sustaining an ethical corporation isn't as difficult as you might think; it's actually easier than some of the day-to-day business challenges you face. The keys to running an ethical company are accountability, honesty, and information transparency.Corporations aren't ethical or evil in and of themselves--but people can be. So ethics must focus on you and the people you work with. Most people want to do the right thing, but organizational structure doesnot guarantee they will do the right thing, without meaning to or even knowing it. Structuring an ethical corporation makes the goal easier to achieve. The challenge could not be more urgent. A substantial majority of people in China are dissatisfied with the social behavior of our corporations, say several recent news reports. Poor treatment of workers at home and abroad, products that don't perform as advertised, fake commodities, poor customer service, environmental pollution, to mention a few.Responsible behavior is important to your business success, but let's not forget that you're in business--you're not out to solve the world's problems. So how do you balance the two? What does it mean to be ethical in business? It simply requires that you follow your best moral instincts, even in areas that don't appear to involve moral issues, such as cost-benefit analyses. But while good ethics often equates to good business, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes being truly ethical means giving up something you want in exchange for doing the rightthing. That's why we worry about ethics in the first place--if it didn't cost us anything, everyone would be ethical all the time. Unit6SPORTS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH.Sports do much good to our health. Especially they can be of great value to our psychological health. People who are involved in athletics feel more self-sufficient and confident in their abilities. They feel they are in control of their own actions. Sports offer people an opportunity to experience If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.Unit7Life after RetirementThe moment of retirement will mean the beginning of a new life for Old Jack. From the age of 16 to 60, he kept working very hard. Work and study, family and society were what he focused on. Now, in retirement, he wants to have a life of his own. The first thing hewants to do is to travel around the world, to visit the African wildlife, to appreciate the glorious Western and Oriental culture and to go to every corner of the world he has ever dreamed of. Then, he will find a beautiful quiet place, and write. He will write about his own world. Maybe, he will not publish it, and he will simply write for fun. Of course, family life will remain important for him. Every week, when his family gathers together, they will share their happiness and solve their problems together. Life after retirement means much more time for him, and he will enjoy every minute of it.Unit8On GlobalizationIn the process of globalization, many foreign things have entered into our lives and have changed our lives. This has made the world become smaller and smaller. For example, we can watch foreign movies, enjoy foreign food, wear fashionable foreign clothes, and even use high-tech products imported from advanced countries. Some people even celebrate the foreign festivals and adopt foreign lifestyle or foreign ideasin order to be a global citizen. Whenever you go, you may find things that are familiar to you in your hometown or homeland. Many parts of the world are watching the same film, and the same song is popular at the same time all over the world. Even the style of architecture has become identical, especially in cosmopolitan cites, you may find some similar features in their city buildings. There are different ideas about globalization. Those who are in favor of globalization take a positive and optimistic attitude towards it. What they value most is the good effects of the globalization and the various benefits it brings about. However, there are also some people who strongly dislike the idea and the practice of globalization. They place more emphasis on the bad or evil effects of globalization. In my opinion, every coin has two sides. We should take a realistic attitude towards globalization. On the one hand, globalization of the economy and to some extent, the globalization of culture may bring some advantages. It may promote the development of less developed areas, improve some people's living standardand enrich their local culture, and also give people more chances to know about others which are quite different from their own. On the other hand, globalization may bring about some disadvantages or negative effects. For example, the world will lose its cultural diversity because of the invasion and prevailing of one culture, and some cultures will lose its cultural identities and peculiar characteristics. Thus, it's appropriate for us to take a balanced attitude towards globalization.。

It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company's head of marketing. In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The unique atmosphere of the coffee bars there caught his eye. To Schultz it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work, and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave him a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores —and that was only the beginning. In fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day!Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gets an understanding of customers in the city. This understanding helps Starbucks open stores in the right locations for their customers.31.The main idea of the passage is ___________________.A) how Starbucks has grownB) what Starbucks makesC) Starbucks' customersD) how Starbucks makes its coffee正确答案:A32.Which is trueabout Starbucks' first ten years of business?A) It grew very quickly.B) It was run by Howard Schultz.C) It made special coffee makers.D) It was a small company.正确答案:D33.Howard Schultz is ________________.A) a coffee seller in New YorkB) an Italian coffee makerC) the man who changed the companyD) one of the original owners of the company正确答案:C34.About how many new Starbucks opened in 1999?A) 3.B) 150.C) 300.D) More than 1000.正确答案:D35.What helps Starbucks succeed in places outside the United States?A) Learning about local customers.B) Only selling locally produced coffee beans.C) Working with other major coffee-making companies.D) Opening restaurants in just a few locations each year.正确答案:APassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed. Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposite; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements. What’s more, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with violent changes. This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts(对应的人). 36.The following factors tend to promote social change EXCEPT ________________.A) different kinds of peopleB) different points of viewC) different interestsD) different conditions正确答案:D37.The expression "greater tolerance "(in Para.1) refers to ______________.A) more respect for different beliefs and behaviorsB) quicker adaptation to changing circumstancesC) greater willingness to changeD) greater readiness to agree to different opinions and ideas正确答案:A38.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE within a society?A) Social change is less likely to occur in technology than in values.B) What people learned in their early times tends to change quickly.C) The basic and emotional aspects of society tend to slow down social change.D) Strange elements are likely to quicken social change.正确答案:C39.Social change is easier if it takes place ___________________.A) step by stepB) among Black AmericansC) between Black Americans and their white counterpartsD) between Black Americans and other Americans minorities正确答案:A40.The passage mainly discusses ____________________.A) the necessity of social changeB) certain factors that determine the ease with which social change occursC) the way to slow down social changeD) how to promote social change正确答案:BPart III Vocabulary and Structure ( 10 minutes )Directions: There are a number of incomplete sentences in this part. 大学英语综合教程4unit 2passageB作文答案(新)

大学英语综合教程4unit 2passageB作文答案(新)

Unit1Men Are Different from Women in Many WaysTraditionally, men and women were seen as opposite poles of a magnet. That's why we worry about ethics in the first place--if it didn't cost us anything, everyone would be ethical all the time.Unit6SPORTS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH.Sports do much good to our health.

Malnutrition a chronic state in which the total food 第2次作业一、阅读理解(本大题共100分,共5小题,每小题20分) 1.Hunger is no novelty. We can discount legends of golden ages, landsof Cockayne, and Mefgasthenes , statement that before Alexander'sinvasion of India, there had never been famine or food shortage there.historical records show that during the Renaissance one in Britain, and one in five in Europe, was a famine year, agreater area and more diverse climate, had a famine in everyyear.Famine is a state of affairs in which people are dying in the streets. It therefore attracts the notice of historians and is recorded. The factthat it strikes people who are aware of having been properly fed and wel1 is more important. Not only are the survivors more resilient, the system and eager to do from the record that they do is much moreinsidious. It is supply or,more often, the supply ofcertain components such asprotein or some of the vitamins, is inadequate. It seems probable that, either constantly or seasonally. It used to be the usual condition ofmankind and was regarded as normal. The rickety appearance of the figures in medieval paintings and drawings is often put down to the incompetenceof the artist: it is as likely that most people really did look like that. The exuberance with which poets greeted the "merry month of May 〃 may, in our dull climate, have had a meteorological basis: it is just as likely that in May, after six months' shortage, there was now an adequatevitamin supply. The promptness with which some sailors succumbed toscurvy after leaving port suggests that they were normal 1y on the edge of scurvy and needed only a siight worsening of conditions to get itacutely. Others will think of other examples. Hunger and malnutrition arc components, of a classic example of a vicious cycle. They lead toenfeeblement or apathy in which nothing either can be done, or seems to be worth doing, to alter the state of affairs; this leads to more hunger and malnutrition. There is good reason to think that, in much of thedeveloping world, if the cycle could once the broken, it would neverreturn.(1) .According to the text, hunger in the pastoccurred more frequently in Britain than in the rest of EuropeB.was less of a problem than it is todayc.was almost unknown in the Indian subcontinentD.was quite a regular occurrence(2).The writer suggests that famine is different from malnutrition because .A.it is a far more widespread problemB.it causes rather more people to diec.it arouses a desire for action rather than mere apathyD.it tends to affect the rich and well fed more than the poor(3).It was a common condition in the Middle Ages.B.It arouses a great deal of emotion and interest.c.It affected the competence of medieval artists.D.It is a more obvious problem than famine.(4). The answer to this question would explain the aspect of human nature called personality. Some theories assume that inborn characteristics determine human personali ty. Many observers have hypothesized that each person has a dominant temperament, present from birth, that influences his or her behavior during an entire lifetime. According to one of these theories, people can be classified into four basic types: sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic and melancholic. Each type or temperament is characterized by a unique set of possible strengths and possible weaknesses.Sanguine people are described as the most outgoing of the four temperaments. They are warm, fun-loving, and 1 ike the company of others. Because of these strengths, it is said that sanguines often make good salesmen, actors, or public speakers. Sanguines, however, may have some serious weaknesses. Their problems often come from their lack of discipline. Easily distracted, they often lack the concentration to complete a job or follow through on a promise. For this reason, other people may not trust them.Choleric people, are quite different from the carefree, emotional sanguines. Because of their strong will, decisiveness, and productivity, cholerics are natural leaders who are good at making vast plans and motivating other people to help them carry out their plans. They are often successful in business, industry, or politics. Choleric weaknesses can be very damaging, however. Because a strong desire to lead, they can be cruel and cold toward those who do not wish to follow. They often dobecome hostile toward anyone who questions that decision.Phlegmatics are calm, easygoing people who strive for efficiency and organization. Very diplomatic and polite, they make people feel comfortable and generally help keep things running smoothly. For these reasons, they make good teachers, technicians, etc. Phlegmatics, however, often have weaknesses that keep them from becoming successful. Afraid to take chances, they may let opportunities go by. In fact, they may avoid taking any steps to improve their position in life.Melancholics are often considered to be gifted persons who possess creative talent. They are very analytical and able to understand complicated processes and to note detail. These people can make good doctors, scientists, artists, writers, and musicians. Melancholics are also said to be loyal, idealistic and self-sacrificing. However, melancholics frequently make themselves miserable because they tend to be negative and critical, and put up inflexible standards. They attach importance to everything they do, so they worry too much and see problems everywhere, and complain too much. They often become disappointed because neither they nor the people around them can live up to their high standards.Explaining human personality in terms of innate temperaments is a theory that has not been generally accepted by psychologists. They criticize it for being too simplistic and unscientific. This may be so; however, present-day psychologists have been unable to formulate a single theory.(1).The word "dominant" probably means .A.primaryB.minorc.insignificant(2).Outgoing are those sanguine people .A.who like to be in big firms or corporationsB.who are emotional and carefreeC.who enjoy the habit of making fun of othersD.who can be good businessmen(3).What are said to be the most important features of Choleric people?A.Cruel but sympathetic.B.Decisive and cold.Hostile and fun-loving.D.Strong-wi11ed and polite.(4).Who are likely to be rejected by a bright-future project?A.Cholerics.B.Sanguines.c.Melancholies.D.Phlegnatics.(5).Why is each person different from all others?A.Because of their psychology.Because of their different background.c.Because of their various body temperature.D.Because of their innate personalities.3.Chicago taxpayers paid $ 30 an hour to provide reputed mob (黑帮)boss Joseph Lombardo with his own personal chauffeur, They also paid city workers who ran business, conducted shake-downs, went to the racetrack and even committed a jewel robbery on city time. The same problem, on a smaller scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwil1ing to provide money on a permanent basis for long-term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future profits. This they do by issuing stocks and shares in the business through the Stock Exchange. By doing so they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and overseas. When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company with whom he original 1 y placed it. Instead, he sells his shares through a stockbroker to some other saver who is seeking to invest his money. Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the Government or by local authorities. Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railway, this country could not function. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and newdevelopment if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. The Government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to the Stock Exchange. There is hardly a man or woman in this country whose job or whosestandard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another this new money must come from the savings of the country. The Stock Exchangeexists to provide a channel through which these savings can reach those who need finance.(1).Almost all companies involved in new production and development mustA.rely on their own financial resourcesB.persuade the banks to provide long-term financeC.borrow large sum of money from friends and people they knowD.depend on the population as a whole for finance(2).The money which enables those companies to go ahead with their projectsis .A.repaid to its original owners as soon as possibleB.raised by the selling of shares in the companiesc.exchanged for ownership in The Stock ExchangeD.invested in different companies on The Stock Exchange (3).When the savers want their money back they .A.ask another company to obtain money for themB.look for other people to borrow money fromC.put their shares in the company back on the market D.transfer their money to a more successful company (4).All the essential services on which we depend are .lends money to themrun by the Government or our local authoritiesB.in constant need of financial supportc.financed wholly by rates and taxesD.unable to provide for the needs of the population(5) .The Stock Exchange makes it possible for the Government, localauthorities and nationalized industries .A.to borrow as much money as they wishB.to make certain everybody saves moneyc.to raise money to finance new developmentD.to make certain everybodyHow much paper do you use every year? Probably you can't answer that question quickly. Tn 1990 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person in a year. Now some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. The amount of paper a country uses shows how far advanced the country is, some people say. It is difficult to say whether this is true: different people mean different things by the word 'advanced'. But countries like the United States, England and Sweden certainly use more paper than other countries.Paper, 1 ike many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on papyrus. Europeans used Parchment for many hundreds of years. Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin of.Certain young animals. We have learnt some of the most important facts of European history from records that were kept on parchment. The Chinese first made paper about 2000 years ago. China still has pieces of paper which were made as long ago as that. But Chinese paper was not made from the wood of trees. It was made from the hairlike parts of certain plants.Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. Scandinavia which now makes a great deal of the world" s paper, did not begin to make it until 1500. It was a German named Schaeffer who found out that one could make the best paper from trees. After that, the forest countries of Canada, Sweden, Norway Finland and the United States became the most important in papermaking. Today in Finland, which makes the best paper in the world, the paper industry is the biggest in the land. New papermaking machines are very big, and they make paper very fast. The biggest machines can make a piece of paper 300 metres long and six metres wide in one minute. When we think of paper, we think of newspaper, books, letters, envelopes, and writing paper. But there are many other uses. Only half of the paper that is made is used for books and newspapers, etc.Paper is very good for keeping you warm. Houses are often insulated with paper. You have perhaps seen homeless men asleep on a large number of newspapers- They are insulating themselves against the cold. In Finland, where in winter it is sometimes - 40°Ccentigrade, the farmers wear paper boots in the snow. Nothing could be warmer. Each year, more and more things are made of paper. We have had paper cups, plates, and dishes for a long time. But now we hear that chairs, tables, and even beds can be made of paper. With paper boots and shoes, you can wear paper hats, paper dresses, and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you throw them away and buy new ones. The latest in paper seems to be paper houses. These are not smal1 houses for children to play in, but real, big houses for people to live in. You can buy a house with three chief rooms, for about $500. You can put it up yourself in a few hours, and you can use it for about five years.People have made paper boats, but they have not yet made paper aeroplanes or cars. 东华大学网络教育学位英语作文Title: The Impact of Technology on EducationIn the contemporary era, technology has revolutionized every aspect of human life, and education is no exception. The integration of technology into education has brought about significant changes, shaping the way students learn and teachers instruct. This essay explores the profound impact of technology on education, examining its benefits, challenges, and future prospects. One of the most evident advantages of technology in education is its ability to enhance the learning experience. Through multimedia resources, such as videos, interactive simulations, and virtual reality applications, students can engage with the material in a more dynamic and immersive manner. These tools cater to diverse learning styles, allowing students to grasp complex concepts more easily and retain information effectively.Furthermore, technology facilitates personalized learning experiences. Adaptive learning platforms utilize algorithms to analyze students' strengths and weaknesses, tailoring the curriculum to meet individual needs. This customization promotes student autonomy and fosters a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Additionally, online assessments provide instant feedback, enabling students to track their progress and address areas that require improvement. Moreover, technology expands access to education, breaking down barriers of time and space. With the proliferation of online courses and e-learning platforms, students can pursue education from anywhere in the world, at their own convenience. This accessibility is particularly beneficial for individuals with disabilities, those residingin remote areas, or those balancing work and family commitments. However, despite its myriad benefits, technology in education also presents certain challenges. One of the primary concerns is the digital divide, which refers to the gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not. Socioeconomic disparities can exacerbate this divide, limiting educational opportunities for marginalized communities. Bridging this gap requires concerted efforts to provide equitable access to technology and internet connectivity.Furthermore, the integration of technology poses challenges for educators, who must adapt their teaching methodologies to incorporate digital tools effectively. Training programs and professional development initiatives are essential to equip teachers with the necessary skills and resources to harness the full potential of technology in theclassroom. Moreover, concerns about privacy and data security necessitate robust policies to safeguard sensitive information and protect the rights of students and educators.Looking ahead, the future of technology in education holds immense promise. Advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and machine learning are poised to further revolutionize the learning process, offering innovative solutions to age-old challenges. However, it is imperative to approach these developments thoughtfully, ensuring that technology remains a tool for empowermentrather than a source of inequality. In conclusion, technology has profoundly transformed education, offering unparalleled opportunities for learning and growth. From personalized learning experiences to expanded access to education, technology has the potential to democratize learning and empower individuals worldwide. By addressing challenges such as the digital divide andprioritizing ethical considerations, we can harness the transformative power of technology to create a more inclusive and equitable education system.。

Good luck!二.阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)Passage OneThere are stories about two U.S. presidents, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK. We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting. The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact, he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson, he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said. If he approved of a paper, he would write “all correct” on it. The problem was that he didn’t know how to spell, so what he really wrote was “ol korekt”. After a while, he shortened that term to “OK”.The second explanation is based on the place where President Van Buren was born, Kinderhook, New York. Van Buren’s friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren wa s called “OK”.11. The author ____C______.A. believes both of the storiesB. doesn’t believe a word of the storiesC. is not sure whether the stories are trueD.is telling the stories just for fun12. According to the passage, President Jackson ______D____.A. couldn’t draw up any documents at allB. didn’t like to read important papers by himselfC. often had his assistants sign documents for himD. wasn’t good at reading, writing or spelling13. According to the first story, the term “OK” ______C_____.A. was approved of by President JacksonB. was the title of some official documentsC. was first used by President JacksonD. was an old way to spell “all correct”14. According to the second story, the term “OK” _____D_____.A. was the short way to say “Old Kinderhook Club”B. meant the place where President Van Buren was bornC. was the name of Van Buren’s clubD. was used to call Van Bur en’s supporters in the election15. According to the second story, the term “OK” was first used _____B____.A.by Van BurenB.in a presidential electionC.to organize the Old Kinderhook ClubD.by the members of the “Old Kinderhook Club”Passage TwoNormally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes(施加)a constant(持续不断的)pressure and strain (负担)of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The student organizations are effective in ensuring that the students observe university regulations. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.16. Normally an American university student would attend ___A_____ courses for a degree.A.36B.20C.12D.1517. Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probably because ____C____.A. they hate the constant pressure and strain of their studyB. they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC. such positions may help them get better jobsD. such positions are usually well paid20. Some people think that water ices and milk ices may have been made by the Chinese between three thousand and four thousand years ago. In time, the dish reached India. The Indians, in turn, may have passed on the secret to the Arabs and Persians. The Persians called their dish Sharbat, from which our word sherbet(冰冻果子露)comes.Marco Polo, an Italian who traveled widely in the thirteenth century, noted that he found the Chinese had long been making ices out of fruit juices and milk. From the fourteenth century on, ices became popular, first in Venice and then throughout Italy. In 1533, when Catherine de Medicis left Italy to marry the future King Henry Ⅱof France, she took her cooks with her. They made desserts the French had never tasted before. Among them was "ice cream". For each day of the wedding festivities(庆祝活动,庆典)Catherine's cooks prepared a different flavor of her favorite dessert-"ice cream."At first ice cream was a luxury in France. Only rich people had money to buy it. Then, in 1660, a young man from Sicily, Francisco Procopio, arrived in Paris. He opened a shop that sold ice cream at prices people could afford. Procopio's"ice-cream parlor " became so popular that other shops were opened.About 1640, King Charles I introduced ice cream to England. He had heard it was popular in Italy and France. He served ice cream for dessert at a banquet. The surprise dish was a great success. The King ordered his cook to keep the recipe for ice cream a secret. At the time France was in a crisis. The government was badly run and people's lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried to control the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14, 1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792, to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792, the monarchy was abolished. In the same year, Louis was executed. A few months later his wife, Marie, also had her head cut off. The Revolution of France had frightened the other kings of Europe.
