Time allowed for completing this examination is 90 minutes).Section I: Reading Comprehension [30 points]Part 1: Questions 1-5 are based on this part. (15 points)Read the following passage and choose the best answer from A, B, C and D.Since World War II, there has been a clearly discernible trend, especially among the growing group of college students, toward early marriage. Many youths begin dating in the first stages of adolescence, “go steady” through high school, and marry before their formal education has been completed. However, emotional maturity is no respecter of birthday; it does not arrive automatically at twenty-one or twenty-five. Some achieve it surprisingly early, while others never do, even in three score years and ten. Many students are marrying as an escape, not only from an unsatisfying home life, but also from their own personal problems of isolation and loneliness. And it can almost be put down as s dictum that any marriage seldom solves one’s problems, more often, it merely makes them worse. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether the home is an institution that is capable of carrying all that the young are seeking to put into it. Young people correctly understand that their parents are wrong in believing that “success” is the ultimate good, but they erroneously believe that they themselves have found the true center of life’s meaning. Their expectations of marriage are essentially utopian and therefore incapable of fulfillment. They want too much, and disappointments are often bound to follow.Shall we, then, join the chorus of “Miseries” over early marriage? One cannot generalize: allearly marriage are not bad any more than all later ones are good. Satisfactory marriages are determined not by time, but by the emotional maturity of the partners. Therefore, each case must be judged on its own merits. If the early marriage is not an escape, if it is entered into with relatively few illusions or false expectations, and if it is economically feasible, why not? Good marriages can be made from sixteen to sixty, and so are bad ones. (301 words)1. According to this article the trend toward early marriage ______.A. was the result of the Great Depression of the 1930’sB. could not be easily determinedC. is one that could be clearly seenD. is a result of the emotional maturity of the young2. The author suggests that many of today’s early marriage are a result of ______.A. escapismB. theological dictumC. lack of formal educationD. convenience3. More often than not, early marriage will ______.A. not affect one’s problemsB. solve a person’s problemsC. intensify one’s problemsD. ease one’s problems4. The author states that the home as an institution is ______.A. overratedB. unworthy of worshipC. a god who can grant everything that you wish forD. probably not capable of being what many young people expect it to be5. Many young people who marry early believe that ______.A. their parents have found the true meaning of lifeB. they have found the true center of life’s meaningC. “success” is the ultimate goodD. to succeed is not at all importantPart 2: Questions 6-10 are based on this part. (15 points)Read the following passage and choose the best answer from A, B, C and D.It was 1985, and Rafe Esquith was beginning his third year of teaching in Los Angeles public schools. He faced a class of 40 sixth-graders from low-income homes where English rarely was spoken, and the best reader among them was two years below grade level. But to everyone’s surprise, he decided to teach them Shakespeare.Five families agreed to let their children play “Macbeth”for two hours after school. This proved to be so much fun that, within weeks, Esquith had 28 kids happily soaking up the drama of blood and betrayal in medieval Scotland. They were learning many words they had never heard before. But when Esquith asked a school district supervisor for official approval, he received this note: “Mr. Esquith, it is not appropriate that you stay after school to teach Shakespeare. It would be better if you did something with the children that is academic.”It would not be the last time that the narrow thinking of big-city school administration got in Esquith’s way. Yet the bearded, 6-foot-tall cyclone has proved that a teacher who thinks very big-much harder lessons, larger projects, extra class time can help disadvantaged children in ways most educators never imagine. This was difficult at first, until he stumbled upon a concept of teaching that is at the core ofhis success. American children, even those from hardworking immigrant cultures, have in Esquith’s view been wrongly taught that learning should always be fun, but teachers who think hard lessons are bad for kids from low-income homes. When faced with something difficult, such students don’t know what to do.The Declaration of Independence says Americans are entitled to the pursuit of happiness, but the emphasis in public schooling has been on the happiness, he believes. “What happened to pursuit?” Esquith said. So he has created an entirely new universe in his classroom, cherishing effort and the slogan, “There Are No Shortcuts”.As for their own dramatic performances, Esquith got around the original ban on his after- school “Macbeth”rehearsals by switching to Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town”. When that class finally performed the Shakespeare play, a school district supervisor showed up. The high-ranking district administrator came up afterwards and shook his hand. “Rafe”, she said, “I’ve never seen Shakespeare done better.”(376 words)6. It can be learned from the passage that Esquith’s students ______.A. liked the traditional teaching betterB. were relatively poor in intelligenceC. were mainly from immigrant familiesD. refused to cooperate with the new teacher7. At first, Esquith’s Shakespeare-teaching ______.A. won the support of the school authorityB. got slow response from the school authorityC. did not draw attention from the school authorityD. was not allowed by the school authority8. It is implied that most educator ______.A. fail to realize the potential of disadvantaged studentsB. fail to introduce fun into the learning of disadvantaged studentsC. are reluctant to admit the unfair treatment to disadvantaged studentsD. are unaware of the difficulty faced by disadvantaged students9. Esquith’s principle of teaching is different from the general one in that ______.A. he insists on giving harder lessons to more advanced studentsB. he places greater emphasis on hard work in students’ learningC. he pays less attention to students’ academic performancesD. he dismisses the concept of extra homework for students10. What is the main idea of the passage?A. An inspiring teacher wins the love and respect of his students.B. An experienced teacher contributes to the school and the students.C. An innovative teacher makes changes in the students.D. 大学英语A1
大学英语A1一、阅读理解1、Robert Spring, a 19th century forger(造假者), was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At fist he prospered by selling his small but genuine collection of early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale and circulation.Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can't approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don't have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals. In Spring's time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General "Stonewall" Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny Jackson's financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.(1)、In Philadelphia Spring first made a lot of money by ______.A:selling all kinds of books at below-average pricesB:imitating the signatures of some famous AmericansC:selling the genuine signatures of some famous AmericansD:selling his forgeries to other countries答案:C(2)、Spring sold his false autographs in England and Canada because______.A:people there were willing to offer higher pricesB:there was less chance of being discovered thereC:he had unusual love for the two countriesD:there was a greater demand there than in America答案:B(3)、According to paragraph 2, forgeries are usually sold to ______.A:experts in the fieldB:some crazy readersC:book dealers who love investing money this wayD:people who don't know much in the field答案:D(4)、Miss Fanny Jackson was ______.A:an unknown lady who sold her father's collection of letters and manuscripts to SpringB:an imaginary person created by SpringC:a member of Spring's familyD:the only daughter of Governor "Stonewall" Jackson答案:B(5)、It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______.A:Spring's business began to go downhill after the Civil WarB:Miss Fanny Jackson had serious financial problemsC:Spring was short of money when his life came to an endD:Spring's forging skills did not improve much before his death答案:C2、It was 1985, and Rafe Esquith was beginning his third year of teaching in Los Angeles public schools. 外国语学院大学外语教学部2009年8月2009级《大学英语》分级考试试卷Part I. Reading Comprehension (40%)irections: Read the following passages and choose the best answer to each of the questions or incomplete statements following the passage. You must read thefour choices marked A, B, C and D, and decide which is the best answer. Thenmark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line throughthe center.(2’×20)Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. It has been a widespread belief that the American family is dying. But a new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study affords surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life. The American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller, men and women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is higher. But despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home. So far the amount of educational or development time hasn’t varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home. In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television.School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school. A larger proportion of children go to school earlier than ever before, and they stay in school longer. Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers (日托站) has almost doubled in recent years. Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small.1 The main idea of this article is that _______.A. the American family is dyingB. young people today don’t want to get marriedC. the American family is changing, but it is stronger than everD. education has resulted in dramatic changes in the American family2 Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Marriage is more popular than before.B. Many divorced people remarry.C. The majority of marriages last long.D. Working mothers devote less time to their children.3 The author of this article believes that ________.A. the American family is here to stayB. children should not watch so much televisionC. mothers should not work when their children are smallD. teenage marriages should be encouraged4 What is the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century?A. The daycare center.B. Television.C. The school.D. Development time.5 According to the writer, which two major factors have led to the belief that the Americanfamily is dying?A. The divorce rate is high and working mothers neglect their children.B. The divorce rate is high and children care more about television than anything else.C. Divorces are increasing and many teenage marriages break up.D. Children stay in school longer and mothers have little time to take care of them. Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. What you give your relatives, friends, husband, or wife can help you know yourself better. Also, what they give you can tell you something about their personality. Most gift-giving (and getting) shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship. But it is possible to form some associations between the kinds of things bought and the people who buy them. Here is a guide to who gives you wha t --- and why.The clothes you wear tell something about your personality. They tell the world not only how you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well. When someone gives you something to wear that agrees with your self-image, they’re saying, “I agree with you. I like you the way you are.” Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment. On the other hand, a gift of clothing that does not match your personality could be an insult to your character.Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries toda y-so much so that giving a homemade gift is sometimes considered unusual. If you receive a homemade gift, you’re lucky. It may not be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of love. People who give homemade gifts may be said to be very generous. They are given time and emotion, two important characteristics of being creative.A person who thinks of food when thinking of a gift is good example of what human warmth means. Whether you give a box of chocolates, a bag of oranges, or a ball of cheese, all carry the same message of comfort and support.People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do. If you happen to receive a large, heavy book, this giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are. Of course, reading is a way of feeling the emotions of another person and of learning new things. Giving a book can be a way of sharinga feeling or a newly learned meaning. The giver is probably trying to say to you what the book said to him.6 The first paragraph is written to tell readers that ________.A. the gifts you give can help you understand yourself betterB. the gifts you receive are helpful for you to know the personality of those who givethemC. gifts can show friendship and loveD. there is a certain relationship between the kinds of gifts and the people who givethem7 A person who likes the self-image of another person will give the latter ________.A. clothesB. a homemade giftC. a gift that agrees with the personality of the receiverD. a gift that matches the character of the giver8 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. What you wear can tell something about your personality.B. Homemade gifts are not welcomed in some countries.C. I think it was my grandmother who encouraged me more thananyone: she taught me the names of wildflowers and got me interested in looking at the countryside, so it seemed obvious to go on to do zoology at university.I didn’t get my first camera until after I’d graduated, when I was due to go diving in Norway and needed a method of recording the sea creatures I would find there. My father didn’t know anything about photography, but he bought me an Exac ta, which was really quite a good camera for the time, and I went off to take my first pictures of sea starfish. I became keen very quickly, and I learnt how to develop and print.I’ve tried from the beginning to produce pictures which are always biologic ally correct. There are people who will alter things deliberately: you don’t pick up sea creatures from the middle of the shore and take them down to attractive pools at the bottom of the shore without knowing you’re doing it.There can be a lot of ignora nce in people’s behavior towards wild animals and it’s a problem that more and more people are going to wild places: while some animals may get used to cars, they won’t get used to people suddenly rushing up to them. The sheer pressure of people, coupled with the fact that there are increasingly few places where no one else has photographed, means that over the years, life has become much more difficult for the professional wildlife photographers.Nevertheless, wildlife photographers play a very important part in educating people about what is out there and what needs conserving. Although photography can be an enjoyable pastime, as it is to many people, it is also something that plays a very important part in educating young and old alike.11 The author decided to go to university and study zoology because _______________.A. she wanted to improve her life in the countrysideB. she was persuaded to do so by her grandmotherC. she was keen on the natural worldD. she wanted to stop moving around all the time12 How is the author different from some of the other wildlife photographers she meets?A. She tries to make her photographs as attractive as possible.B. She takes photographs which record accurate natural conditions.C. She likes to photograph plants as well as wildlife.D. She knows the best places to find wildlife.13 The author now finds it more difficult to photograph wild animals because______________.A. there are fewer of themB. they have become more nervous of peopleC. it is harder to find suitable placesD. they have become frightened of cars14 According to the author, wildlife photography is important because it can make peoplerealize that ___________________.A. photography is an enjoyable hobbyB. we learn little about wildlife at schoolC. it is worthwhile visiting the countrysideD. it is important to look after wild animals15 Which of the following describes the author?A. It is convenient: three or four words per exchange. It takes cleverness, concentration and quick fingers. And it requires very simple language. There’s neither time nor space for explanations. Why waste precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB(= be right back) will do?Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (= pardon me for jumping in).Interested in whom you’re talking to? Type A/S/L, the common request to know your pal’s age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a reply from your pal.If something makes you laugh, say you’re OTF (= on the floor), or LOL (= laughing out loud), or join the two into ROTFL (= rolling on the floor laughing). And when it’s time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (= got to go) or TTYL (= talk to you later).People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing feelings, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and use capitals. Punctuation is going, too.16 When people are online, they talk by_____.A. using body language.B. drawing some strange picturesC. making phone callsD. making use of an especially short form of English17 Internet makes many people in the world ______.A. talk at the same timeB. discover their friends and relativesC. pick out good things to buyD. find out about some problems in society18 The underlined sentence “There’s neither time nor space for explanation”(L.1, para. 4)means that _____.A. people should use words properlyB. people should know what time it is when they are talkingC. people online have to express themselves in a simple wayD. people should communicate in a funny way19 If you get 19/M/HK as an answer to your A/S/L, it means ______.A. the person who is talking to you is 19 from Hong Kong and he is highB. you are talking to a boy 19 years old and he lives in Hong KongC. you are talking to 19 boys from Hong Kong at the same timeD. the boy from Hong Kong has been online for 19 minutes20 Which of the following is a way to save online time?A. But, these small strips of cloth should not be underestimated, fashion experts say.The shirt, suit or jacket are neutral means of expression. But, the tie gives you the final personal touch, experts suggest. In fact, its color also has psychological importance. "Red, for instance, evokes feelings of warmth and intimacy", according to Axel Venn. He's a professor of design at the University of Applied Sciences and Art in Germany. "It also stands for energy, dynamism and strength."Using shades of color requires understanding and sensitivity. Orange is regarded as a lively color. Blue stands for matter-of-fact, solitude and coolness. Shiny yellow stirs amusement. Green is the color of nature and harmony. It's only when the color fits the personal character that it is viewed as authentic."A lively orange with a black suit and white shirt can look great at a private party or in an artistic environment," Venn says. "In a conservative environment such as in a bank such dress is unsuitable".Imme Vogelsang, a trainer of etiquette in Hamburg, Germany, recommends in business environment low contrasting colors such as wine red, dark green or dark blue. But feminine colors have also become popular. "Light green and a fine rose color play an increasing role. Such colors express innovation and sensitivity," Venn says. Also, patterns that stand out can be an interesting eye catcher in a private environment but are unsuitable in business."Stripes and small geometric patterns are more appropriate in business," Vogelsang says, "but stripes should never run vertically or horizontally."With diagonal stripes it is important to look at the direction. They should run from the bottom left to the fight top. "This symbolizes dynamism. In the opposite direction it shows fear and escapist thoughts."51. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Ties--Impractical Pieces of ClothingB. Psychological Importance of TiesC. What The Colors of Ties MeanD. The Colors of Ties and the Occasions to Wear Them52. According to the passage, ties are more important ___________.A. than shirts, suits or jacketsB. in colors than in patternsC. in expressing one's mood than shirtsD. in business than on private occasions53. What color of tie should one wear, if he wants to appear energetic?A. Green.B. Orange.C. Shiny yellow.D. Red.54. The best color for the tie of a judge in a court should be _________.A. light green.B. lively orangeC. fine roseD. dark blue55. What kind of ties is more suitable on an important business occasion?A. Ties without stripes and geometric patterns.B. Ties with swipes of vertical or horizontal patterns.C. Ties of no bright colors and obvious patterns.D. Plain ties without any swipes and patterns.56. It is implied in the passage that ______.A. ties with stripes from the bottom left to the right top are not popularB. ties with stripes from the bottom right to the left top are not popularC. ties with stripes of vertical or horizontal patterns are popularD. ties of feminine colors are out of fashion nowadaysPassage TwoAnimals are more like us than we ever imagined. They feel pain, they experience stress, and they show affection, excitement and love. All these findings have been made by scientists in recent years--and such results are beginning to change how we view animals.Strangely enough, this research was sponsored by fast food companies like McDonald's and KFC. Pressured by animal rights groups, these companies felt they had to fund scientists researching the emotional and mental states of animals.McDonald's, for instance, funded studies on pig behaviors at Purdue University, Indiana. This research found that pigs seek affection and easily become depressed if left alone or prevented from playing with each other. If they become depressed, they soon become physically ill. Because of this, and other similar studies, the European Union has banned the use of isolating pig stalls from 2012. In Germany, the government is encouraging pig farmers to give each pig 20 seconds of human contact a day, and to provide them with toys to prevent them from fighting.Other scientists have shown that animals think and behave like humans.Koko, the 300-pound gorilla (大猩猩) at the Gorilla Foundation in Northern California, for instance, has been taught sign language. Koko can now understand several thousand English words, more than many humans who speak English as a second language. On human IQ tests, she scores between 70 and 95. Before such experiments, humans thought language skills were absent from the animal kingdom. Other myths are also being overturned, like the belief that animals lack self-awareness. Studies have also shown that animals mourn their dead, and that they play for pleasure. These striking similarities between animal and human behavior have led some to ask a question: "If you believe in evolution, how can't you believe that animals have feelings that human beings have?"Until recently, scientists believed that animals behaved by instinct and that what appeared to be learned behavior was merely genetically-programmed activity. But as Koko the Gorilla shows, this is not the case. In fact, learning is passed from parents to offspring far more often than not in the animal kingdom. So what implications does this knowledge have for humans? Because of this, should we ban hunting and animal testing? Should we close zoos? Such questions are being raised by many academics and politicians. Harvard and 25 other American law schools have introduced courses on animal rights.57. The author feels it strange that the research was sponsored by fast food companies like McDonald's and KFC probably because these companies ____________.A. are the largest fast food chains in the worldB. have little to do with animalsC. consume a large amount of meat each dayD. are notorious for their ill-treatment to animals58. The experiment with Koko shows ____________.A. gorillas' IQ scores are as high as human beings'B. animals are much cleverer than we used to believeC. parent animals can pass learning to their offspring intentionallyD. some gorillas are smarter than many humans59. Which of the following is NOT true according to the studies?A. Some animals have developed language skills.B. Some animals can show their feelings.C. Animals enjoy playing with each other.D. Animals become indifferent when one of them dies.60. By citing the question “If you believe in evolution, how can't you believe that animals have feelings that human beings have?” the author means _________.A. human feelings can trace their origin back to animalsB. animal's feelings are as developed as human beings'C. from the point of view of evolution animals should have no feelingsD. we cannot believe that animals have feelings that human beings have61. The studies urge us to __________.A. stop killing animals for foodB. ban hunting and animal testingC. close zoos and animal farmsD. change our ways to treat animals62. The purpose of this passage is to tell us that ________.A. animals are much smarter than we ever imaginedB. animal rights should be taught in schoolsC. we should show greater respect to animalsD. animal rights should be protected worldwidePassage ThreeIn a recent Sunday school class in a church in the Northeast, a group of eight-to ten-year-olds were in a deep discussion with their two teachers. When asked to choose which of ten stated possibilities they most feared happening their response was unanimous. All the children most dreaded a divorce between their parents.Later, as the teachers, a man and a woman in their late thirties, reflected on the lesson, they both agreed they'd been shocked at the response. When they were the same age as their students, they said, the possibility of their parents' being, divorced never entered their heads. Yet in just one generation, children seemed to feel much less security in their family ties.Nor is the experience of these two Sunday school teachers an isolated one. Psychiatrists revealed in one recent newspaper investigation that the fears of children definitely do change in different periods; and in recent times, divorce has become one of the most frequently mentioned anxieties. In one case, for example, a four-year-old insisted that his father rather than his mother walk him to nursery school each day. The reason? He said many of his friends had “no daddy living at home, and I'm scared that will happen to me.”In line with such reports, our opinion leaders expressed great concern about the present and future status of the American family. In the poll 33 percent of the responses listed decline in family structure, divorce, and other family-oriented concerns, as one of the five major problems facing the nation today. And 26 percent of the responses included such family difficulties as one of the five major problems for the United. States in the next decade. One common concern expressed about the rise in divorces and decline in stability of the family is that the family unit has traditionally been a key factor in transmitting stable cultural and moral values from generation to generation. Various studies have shown that educational and religious institutions often can have only a limited impact on children without strong family support.63. It is mentioned that in a Sunday school class the children _________.A. deeply impressed their teachersB. had an argument with their teachersC. feared answering their teachers' questionD. gave the same response to their teachers' question64. The two teachers in the Sunday school felt _________.A. responsible for tightening school securityB. no fear of the divorce of their students' parentsC. no threat of broken family ties when they were ten-year-oldsD. shocked at the divorce rates of their students' parents65. The author uses a four-year-old as an example to ________.A. show the anxiety of today's childrenB. emphasize the importance of family tiesC. indicate the seriousness of psychological problemsD. reveal the change of children's attitude toward divorce66. It is stated that one third of the American population _________.A. consider family-oriented concerns to be a big problemB. are worried about the future of the United StatesC. believe the social situation is getting worseD. are facing family difficulties67. Family has been regarded as a major carrier of _________.A. religious beliefsB. various customsC. social traditionsD. cultural and moral values68. It is implied in the passage that __________.A. Sunday school teachers are different from public school teachersB. family has stronger impact on children than other social institutionsC. in a decade family-oriented concerns will be the same as they are nowD. parents' divorce has long been children's biggest fearPassage FourMusicians are fascinated with the possibility that music may be found in nature; it makes our own desire for art seem all the more essential. Over the past few years no less a bold musical explorer than Peter Gabriel has been getting involved. At the Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia, he has been making music together with Kanzi, one of the bonobo apes (倭黑猩猩involved in the long-term language acquisition studies of Sue and Duane Savage-Rumbaugh.I have seen the video of Kanzi picking notes out on a piano-like keyboard, with Gabriel and members of his band playing inside the observation booth in the lab. (They did it this way because Kanzi had bitten one of his trainers a few days previously--interspecies communication is not without its dangers.) The scene is beautiful, the ape trying out the new machine and looking thoughtfully pleased with what comes out. He appears to be listening, playing the right notes. It is tentative but moving, the animal groping for something from the human world but remaining isolated from the rest of the band. It is a touching encounter, and a bold move for a musician whose tune Shock the Monkey many years ago openly condemned the horrors of less sensitive animal experiments than this. What is the scientific value of such a jam session? The business of the Research Center is the forging of greater communication between human and animal. Why not try the fertile and mysterious ground of music in addition to the more testable arena of simple language? The advantage of hearing music in nature and trying to reach out to nature through music is that, though we don't fully understand it, we can easily have access to it. We don't need to explain its workings to be touched by it. Two musicians who don't speak the same language can play together, and we can appreciate the music from human cultures far from our own.Music needs no explanation, but it clearly expresses something deep and important, something humans cannot live without. Finding music in the sounds of birds, whales and other animals makes the farther frontiers of nature seem that much closer to us.69. The writer seems to suggest that ___________.A. music should replace language as the major arena of animal researchB. animal experiments are more often than not cruel and inhumanC. great progress has been made in the field of interspecies communicationD. the experiment with music may help scientific research on animals74. The best title for the passage is ___________.A. Music - The Essence of NatureB. Music - A Better Way to Enjoy NatureC. Music - A New Frontier for ScientistsD. Music - Beyond National and Cultural BoundaryPassage FiveFaith in medicine runs deep in America. We spend more per person on health care than any other nation. Whether we eat too much or exercise too little, whether we're turning gray or feeling blue, we look to some pill or procedure to make us better. We assume that devoting ever more dollars to medicine will bring us longer, healthier lives. But there is mounting evidence that each new dollar we devote to the current health care system brings small and diminishing returns to public health. Today the United States spends more than $4,500 per person per year on health care. Costa Rica spends less than $300. Yet life expectancy at birth is nearly identical in both countries.Despite the highly publicized "longevity revolution," life expectancy among the elderly in the United States is hardly improving. Yes, we" are an aging society, but primarily because of falling birthrates. Younger Americans, meanwhile, are far more likely to be disabled than they were 20 years ago. Most affected are people in their thirties, whose disability rates increased by nearly 130 percent, due primarily to overweight. Why has our huge investment in health care left us so unhealthy? Partly it is because so many promised "miracle cures," from Interferon to gene therapies, have proven to be ineffective or even dangerous. Partly it's because health care dollars are so concentrated on the terminally ill and the very old that even when medical interventions "work," the gains to average life expectancy are small. And partly it is because of medical errors and adverse reaction to prescription drugs, which cause more deaths than motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer or AIDS. Each year roughly 200,000 seniors suffer fatal or life-threatening "adverse drug events" due to improper drug use or drug interaction. Why don't Americans live any longer than Costa Ricans? Overwhelmingly, it's because of differences in behavior. Americans exercise less, eat more, drive more, smoke more, and lead more socially isolated lives. Even at its best, modem medicine can do little to promote productive aging, because by the time most people come in contact with it their bodies are already compromised by stress, indulgent habits, environmental dangers and injuries.75. Americans in general believe that __________.A. more money spent on health care may not result in better healthB. health problems caused by bad habits can hardly be solved by medicineC. higher birthrate can better solve the problem of aging society than medicineD. medicine may provide an effective cure for various health problems76. Compared with the Americans, Costa Ricans _________.A. have a healthier way of lifeB. enjoy a longer life expectancyC. are more dependent on medicineD. are less concerned about their health77. The biggest problem affecting the health of younger Americans may be summarized as the problem of __________.A. overworkB. lifestyleC. stressD. depression78. Which of the following is NOT a reason why health care investment fails to bring a longer life?A. Imbalanced distribution of health care money.B. Failure of many highly-evaluated medical treatments.C. Soaring prices of both drugs and new therapies.D. Drug reaction due to improper use of drugs.79. It is implied in the last paragraph that _________.A. medicine should be taken timely before it is too lateB. poor health conditions leave little room for medicine to workC. great efforts should be made to develop new types of medicineD. it is reasonable to question the effectiveness of medicine80. The passage is mainly focused on __________.A. the limits of medicineB. the life hazards in the U.S.C. the barriers to a longer lifeD. the problems with health investmentPART V TRANSLATION (30 minutes, 20 points)Section A (15 minutes, 10 points)This book derives from decades of teaching in various schools across the country. It is based on the belief that philosophy is a genuinely exciting subject, accessible not only to specialists and a few gifted undergraduate majors but to everyone. Everyone is a philosopher, whether enrolled in a philosophical course or not. The difference is that someone who has studied philosophy systematically has the advantage of having encountered stronger and more varied arguments than might have been available otherwise. What is special about this book is that it offers introductory students the opportunity of having direct contact with substantial readings from significant books on philosophy, but without the unreasonable demand that they confront these books in full, which are often incomprehensible.Section B (15 minutes, 10 points)人人都有追求幸福的权利,但对幸福的定义却因人而异。

Now, all he has to do is turn on the radio or TV. As a result, singing and music have declined.Italians used to sing all the time. Now, they only do it in Hollywood movies. Indian movies are mostly a series of songs and dances wrapped around silly stories. As a result, they don't do much singing in Indian villages anymore. Indeed, ever since radio first came to life, there has been a terrible decline in amateur singing throughout the world. There are two reasons for this sad decline: One, human beings are astonishingly lazy. Put a lift in a building, and people would rather take it than climb even two flights of steps. Similarly, invent a machine that sings, and people would rather let the machine sing than sing themselves. The other reason is people are easily embarrassed. When there is a famous, talented musician readily available by pushing a button, which amateur violinist or pianist would want to try to entertain family or friends by himself ?These earnest reflections came to me recently when two CDs arrived in the mail: They are historic recordings of famous writers reading their own works. It was thrilling to hear the voices from a long dead past in the late 19th century. But today, reading out loud anything is no longer common. Today, we sing songs to our children until they are about two, we read simple books to them till they are about five, and once they have learnt to read themselves, we become deaf. We're alive only to the sound of the TV and the stereo.I count myself extremely lucky to have been born before TV became so common. 1 was about six before TV appeared. To keep us entertained, my mother had to do a good deal of singing and tell us endless tales. It was the same in many other homes. People spoke a language; they sang it, they recited it; it was something they could feel.Professional actors’performance is extraordinarily revealing. But I still prefer my own reading. Because it's mine. For the same reason, people find karaoke liberating. It is almost the only electronic thing that gives them back their own voice. Even if their voices are hoarse and hopelessly out of tune. At least it is meaningful self-entertainment.51. The main idea of this passage is that ____________.A. TV and radio can amuse us with beautiful songs and musicB. TV and radio have weakened our interest in entertaining ourselvesC. people should not be too lazy or embarrassed to singD. parents should sing songs and read books aloud to their children52. According to the passage, Italians _________.A. only sing songs in HollywoodB. are no longer fond of musicC. only sing and dance in villagesD. don't sing much nowadays53. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a reason for the decline in amateur singing?A. It is easier for people to please themselves with songs through TV.B. People don't want to take the trouble to sing songs themselves.C. Amateurs feel shy if they cannot sing as well as the professionals.D. Famous and talented musicians are always willing to entertain people:54. On hearing the voices of the famous writers of a long time past, the author was _______.A. very excitedB. very frightenedC. very nervousD. very surprised55. By stating “We are alive only to the sound of the TV and the stereo", the author means _______.A. we come back to life at the music provided by the TV and the stereoB. we only perceive the music provided by the TV and the stereoC. we should sing more than listen to the TV and the stereoD. we should listen to more music on the TV and the stereo56. The author's attitude toward karaoke is ________.A. negativeB. positiveC. neutralD. indifferentPassage TwoIf those “mad moments”-- when you can't recall what your friend has told you or where you left your keys--are becoming more frequent, mental exercises and a healthy brain diet may help.Just as bodies require more maintenance with the passing years, so do brains, which scientists now know show signs of aging as early as the 20s and 30s. "'Brain aging starts at a very young age, younger than any of us have imagined and these processes continue gradually over the years," said Dr. Gary Small, the director of the Center on Aging at the University of California, Los Angeles. "I'm convinced that it is never too early to get started on a mental or brain-fitness program," he added. In his book, "The Memory Bible," the 51-year-old neuroscientist lists what he refers to as the 10 commandments for keeping the brain young. They include training memory, building skills, minimizing stress, mental exercises, brain food and a healthy lifestyle. It's a game plan for keeping brain Cells sparking and neural networks in tip-top shape.“Misplacing your keys a couple of times doesn't mean you should start labeling your cabinets. Memory loss is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Our brains can fight back," he said.Small provides the weapons for a full-scale attack. According to him, simple memory tests give an indication of what you are up against and tools such as look, snap and connect are designed to make sure that important things such as names and dates are never forgotten. “So if you want to learn names and faces, for example, you meet Mrs. Beatty and you notice a distinguishing facial feature, maybe a prominent eyebrow,”said Small. “You associate the first thing that comes to mind. I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create a mental snapshot of Warren Beatty kissing her brow.”Small admits it may sound a bit strange but he says it works. “Mental exercises could be anything from doing crossword puzzles and writing with your left hand if you are right handed or learning a language. It could be anything that is fun that people enjoy doing", he added. He also recommends physical exercise, a low-fat diet and eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, walnuts and Brazil nuts, and fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants (抗氧化剂) including blueberries and onions in addition to reducing stress.57. The “mad moments” in the first paragraph refers to when we __________.A. have some mental problemsB. have lost our important thingsC. don't listen to what our friends tell us to doD. fail to remember what should be remembered58. In this passage, the author mainly tells us that __________.A. everyone can be forgetful sometimes regardless of one's ageB. we can prevent our sound mind from aging with certain methodsC. brain aging starts from the time when we are in our 20s and 30sD. memory loss is a sign that shows we are getting old59. According to this passage, ____________.A. the game plan for keeping brain cells sparking doesn't work for everyoneB. Dr. Small's memory tests can show you what to do about brain agingC. Dr. Small's advice can help us fight brain aging effectivelyD. our brains can reconstruct memories themselves60. In the fifth paragraph, the author mainly__________.A. provides us with the weapons for attacking othersB. introduces the tools that help us fight against memory lossC. tells us about the important things we should never forgetD. explains the facial features useful for us to remember people61. By saying “I think of the actor Warren Beatty so I create .. her brow", Dr. Small is trying to explain how to use the memory tool of _________.A. impressing rapidlyB. minimizing stressC. connecting related thingsD. observing carefully62. According to Dr. Small, ____________________.A. left-handers may start brain aging later than right-handers doB. learning a foreign language does not help to keep our brain from getting oldC. doing crossword puzzles is the best way to keep us from memory lossD. mental exercises plus healthy diet alone cannot keep us from brain agingPassage ThreeThrough the years, our view of what leadership is and who can exercise it has changed considerably. Leadership competencies have remained constant, but our understanding of what it is, how it works, and the ways in which people learn to apply it has shifted. We do have the beginnings of a general theory of leadership, from history and social research and above all from the thoughts of reflective practitioners such as Moses, Julius Caesar, and James Madison, and in our own time from such disparate sources of wisdom as Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Mao Tse-tung, and Henry Kissinger, who have very little in common except that they have not only been there but tried with some fairness to speculate on paper about it.But tales and reflective observation are not enough except to convince us that leaders are physically strong and abnormally hard workers. Today we are a little closer to understanding how and who people lead, but it wasn't easy getting there. Decades of academic analysis have given us more than 350 definitions of leadership. Literally thousands of empirical investigations of leaders have been conducted in the last seventy-five years alone, but no clear understanding exists as to what distinguishes leaders from non-leaders, and perhaps more important, what distinguishes effective leaders from ineffective leaders and effective organizations from ineffective organizations.Never have so many labored so long to say so little. Multiple interpretations of leadership exist, each providing a fragment of insight but each remaining an incomplete and wholly inadequate explanation. Most of these definitions don't agree with each other, and many of them would seem quite remote to the leaders whose skills are being examined. Definitions reflect fashions, political tides and academic trends. They don't always reflect reality and sometimes they just represent nonsense. It's as if what Braque once said about art is also true of leadership: “The only thing that matters in art is the part that cannot be explained.”Many theories of leadership have come and gone. Some looked at the leader. Some looked at the situation. None has stood the test of time. With such a track record, it is understandable why leadership research and theory have been so frustrating as to deserve the label “the La Brea Tar Pits” of organizational inquiry. Located in Los Angeles, these asphalt pits house the remains of a long sequenceof prehistoric animals that came to investigate but never left the area.63. In regard of leadership competencies, the author suggests that people have ________.A. believed in their existenceB. learned to apply them extensivelyC. found it very difficult to acquire themD. been unable to realize their importance64. Several big names are mentioned in the first paragraph mainly to show theirA. different styles of leadershipB. effective exercise of leadershipC. contributions to the theory of leadershipD. wisdom in applying the theory of leadership65. According to the author, people's opinions of leadership are on the whole quite_________.A. dividedB. originalC. misleadingD. sophisticated66. The author thinks that ______________.A. many people have labored to be leadersB. leaders are beyond our understandingC. the essence of leadership has not been graspedD. the definitions of leadership should vary67. “The La Brea Tar Pits” probably signifies things that____________.A. can be traced back to the prehistoric ageB. are traps for those who want to inquireC. are located in one place foreverD. don't deserve full investigation68. This passage is mainly concerned with _______________.A. the inconsistent theories of leadershipB. the famous leaders and their theoriesC. the changes in the trend of leadershipD. the inaccurate definitions of leadershipPassage FourWhen you leave a job with a traditional pension, don't assume you've lost the chance to collect it. You're entitled to whatever benefit you've earned – and you might even be entitled to take it now. "A lot of people forget they have it, or they think that by waiting until they're 65, they'll have a bigger benefit," says Wayne Bogosian, president of the PFE Group, which provides corporate pre-retirement education.Your former employers should send you a certificate that says how much your pension is worth. If it's less than $5,000, or if the company offers a lump-sum payout, it will generally close your account and cash you out. It may not seem like much, but $5,000 invested over 20 years at eight percent interest is $23,000. If your pension is worth more than $5,000, or your company doesn't offer the lump-sum option, find out how much money you're eligible for at the plan's normal retirement age, the earlier age at which you can collect the pension, the more severe penalty for collecting it early. You'll probably still come out ahead by taking the money now and investing it.What if you left a job years ago, and you're realizing you may have unwittingly left behind a pension? Get help from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. It has an online search tool that has helped locate $47 million in lost benefits for more than 12,000 workers. If you have a traditional pension, retiring early costs more than you might expect. Most people assume you take a proportional cut for leaving before your plan's normal retirement age. For example, you might think that if you need to accrue 30 years of service and you leave three years early, you'd get a pension 90 percent of the full amount. But that's not how it works. Instead, you take an actuarial reduction, determined by the employer but often around five percent a year, for each year you leave early. So retiring three years early could leave you with only 85 percent of the total amount. When you retire early with a defined-contribution plan, the problem is you start spending investments on which you could be earning interest. If you retire when you're 55, for example, and start using the traditional pension then, by age 65 you'll have only about half of what you would've had if you'd kept working until 65.69. When one leaves a job with a traditional pension, __________.A. he tends to forget that he has the pensionB. he has no right to ask for the pensionC. he'll have a bigger benefit than if he waits until the age of 65D. he has a specified worth of pension70. If the retiree's pension is less than $5,000, it is wise of him to________.A. ask the company for a lump-sum payoutB. require his former boss to figure out the value of his pensionC. take the pension with him and make a profit out of itD. collect the pension at his retirement plan's normal retirement age71. If one leaves early before his plan's normal retirement age, __________.A. he'll take 90 percent of the total amount of his pensionB. he'll have half of his pension paymentsC. he'll have his pension payment reduced by 5% a yearD. he'll have only 85 percent of his full pension72. If one retires early with a defined-contribution plan, he is expected to_________.A. earn less interestB. be better off than with a traditional pensionC. start investment immediatelyD. get less Social Security benefits73. Which of the following can be used as the subtitle for the last three paragraphs?A. Your Payout Is Not GuaranteedB. The Retirement DilemmaC. Leave Early, Lose BigD. Take the Pension with You74. Which of the following is NOT true?A. If one leaves 3 years early on a 30-year-service basis, he won't get a pension worth 27/30ths.B. It pays to get an early retirement if one understands how retirement pension plan works.C. The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation helps the retiree to recover lost benefits.D. If one keeps his expenses within his retirement framework, he won't be severely affected.Passage FiveIn a landmark decision, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled November 23, 1998, in Mainstream Loudown v. Board of Trustees of the Loudown County Library that the use of blocking software to restrict internet access in public libraries is unconstitutional. Despite the library's claims that its actions were justified in the name of “protecting minors from harmful content,” Judge Brinkema ruled that the library could not reduce adult access to standards established for children.“The use of blocking software in libraries offends the guarantee of free speech," she ruled, and “constitutes a prior restraint”on all speech. The Loudown County X-Stop software blocked access to a wide range of websites, including those of Quakers, the conservative Heritage Foundation, and AIDS education groups, as well as information about banned books and safe sex.Relying on Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union, Brinkema rejected arguments that the installation of such filtering devices constitutes "a library acquisition decision, to which the First Amendment does not apply." She pointed out that, since the library had originally provided uncensored Internet access and had then taken specific actions to limit it, the situation was analogous to the removal of library materials. The result, she said, was similar to "a collection of encyclopedias from which defendants have laboriously revised portions deemed unfit for library patrons."Although Brinkema's decision will have a major impact on the development of library policies nationwide, there is a crucial underlying problem that cannot be resolved through the legal process. Filtering software is created and produced by private companies that are quite eager and happy to make, all the decisions for us. And by purchasing and installing their products, we are agreeing to let them do just that. It is to these private companies we are surrendering selection and access to the Internet's hugedatabase of electronic information. This means that even the staffs at public libraries have no role in the selection process. The Washington Coalition Against Censorship's new original T-shirt design advocates the only solution we can trust to preserve our First Amendment liberties: “Use your brain: the filter you were born with.”75. The passage is mainly concerned with __________.A. whether it is legal to install computer software in public librariesB. whether libraries have to remove materials they consider harmfulC. what reading materials public libraries should provide to their patronsD. what kind of online services public libraries should offer their readers76. One of the defendant's arguments is that __________.A. the First Amendment does not apply to library purchasing decisionsB. certain materials have to be filtered to protect the ethnic minoritiesC. adults are guaranteed greater freedom to information than childrenD. the library intends to give their readers only healthy information77. Which of the following statements is NOT true of X-Stop software?A. It was purchased from a private commercial company.B. It denied both children and adults access to certain websites.C. It revised a certain portion of the encyclopedias in the library.D. Its installation in a county library was declared illegal by the court.78. Even after the 1998 court decision, the public still have to lace the fundamental problem of _____.A. giving up their freedom of speech on the internetB. having more restricted access to electronic informationC. not allowing the librarians to select reading materials for themD. letting the commercial companies decide what they would read79. The word "'uncensored" in the third paragraph probably means __________.A. freeB. timelyC. beneficialD. restricted80. According to the author, the decision about what is the best to read lies with__________.A. the librariansB. the individual citizensC. the governmentD. the legal courtsPART V TRANSLATION (30 minutes, 20 points)Section A (15 minutes, 10 points)Although the Bush administration has pledged its commitment to have Iraqis run their government on their own, peace and order will be long in coming. On one hand, Saddam remains unaccounted for. On the other hand, surging violence, cases of bloodshed, suicide bombings and people's taking to streets to protest have pledged the U.S. in an embarrassing situation. Recently, President Bush has made some remarks that appear intended to address criticism from the Democratic presidential candidates that top decision-makers failed to anticipate the mounting difficulties lying ahead. It's hoped that the UN can get actively involved in the reconstruction of this war-tom country and play a more positive role in finding a peaceful solution to problems confronting Iraqis.Section B考研的人在英语上花的时间远远多于其他学科,希望英语分数越高越好。

大学英语(A)模拟试卷及答案2011Test06
全国高校网络教育公共基础课统一考试大学英语(A)模拟试卷(2010年修订版)Test 6(根据全国高校网络教育考试委员会2011年1月新颁考试大纲和题型进行了相应调整)Information for the Examinees:This examination consists of FOUR parts. They are:Part Ⅰ: Reading Comprehension (30 points, 25 minutes)Part Ⅱ: Vocabulary and Grammar (30 points, 25 minutes)Part Ⅲ: Translation (20 points, 10 minutes)Part IV: Writing (20 points, 30 minutes)The total marks for this examination is 100 points. An optimistic teacher helps build confidence in the students.Section II: Vocabulary and Grammar [30 points]Part 1: Questions 11- 20 are based on this section. It is kilometers long and kilometers wide at its widest point. It contains New York’s tallest buildings as well as some of the largest schools and colleges, and the most famous financial and theater districts in the United States. It has skyscrapers and Central Park, the old and the new, the best and the worst. It is like no other big city. It is unique. To understand Manhattan, we must know something of its early history: its early days of Dutch colonists and English settlers; the waves of the nineteenth-century European immigrants who arrived at its shores; the African-Americans who moved north after the Civil War; recent immigrants from China and other parts of Asia; and young people who go to New York from all over America. It is a mix of ethnic groups and cultures, successes and failures, hopes and fears. The United States is a nation of immigrants and no other city displays this fact as well as New York City. From Chinatown and Little Italy to Harlem, New York is a place where communities take pride in retaining their ethnicity. Most immigrants went to America with very little money. America gave them hope and a new beginning. Millions of immigrants have prospered in America. On July 4, 1884, the people of France gave to the United States as a symbol of friendship, a statue sculptured by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. This statue was placed on an island in New York Harbor. It is 46 meters high and was the first sight immigrants saw as they came into New York City by ship. It is known as the Statue of Liberty. On the statue is a poem written by Emma Lazarus. This poem sums up the American tradition of accepting people from other countries.
