Everyone is going to drive electrically powered cars. So in a few years people won’t worry about running out of gas. Some of the large automobile companies are really moving ahead with this new technology. F & C Motors, a major auto company, for example, is holding a press conference next week. At the press conference the company will present its new, electronically operated models.Transportation i n the future won’t be limited to the ground. Many people predict that traffic will quickly move to the sky. In the coming years, instead of radio reports about road conditions and highway traffic, news reports will talk about traffic jams in the sky.B ut the sky isn’t the limit. In the future, you’ll probably even be able to take a trip to the moon, Instead of listening to regular airplane announcements, you’ll hear someone say, “The spacecraft to the moon leaves in ten minutes. Please check your equipment. And remember, no more than ten ounces of carry-on baggage are allowed.”11. What will be used to power cars in the next few decades? D12. What will future news reports focus on when talking about transportation? A13. What is the special requirement for passengers traveling to the moon? BQuestions 8 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.8.______{S/3}.[A]He’s got addicted to technology.[B]He is not very good at socializing.[C]He is crazy about text-messaging. [B] It saves both time and money.[C] It is childish and unprofessional. [D]It is cool and convenient.听力原文:M: So, Linzy, do you like to text message on your cell phone?W: Yeah, I text message a lot.M: I don't do it so much. I prefer to make a call if I'm in a hurry.W: Yeah, I go both ways. Sometimes I don’t really want to talk to the person. I just want to ask them onequestion, so it's much easier for me just to text message. If I call them, I'll have to have a long conversation. (Q9)M: Yeah, I can see what you mean. But I get off the phone pretty quickly when I call. I'm not a big talker. (Q8)W: Yeah, that's true. You don't talk a lot.M: So are you fast at writing the messages with your thumb?W: Well, when I first got a cell phone, I was so slow. I thought I would never text message. But then people kept text messaging me, so I felt obliged to learn how to text message. So now I'm pretty fast. What about you?M: Actually I have the opposite problem. When I first got my cell phone, I thought it was so cool (Q10)to text message all my friends who have one, and I was pretty fast with my thumb then. But it seems like now I don't use it so much, I've got slower actually.W: Yeah, I think text messaging actually is what you have to do with your age. For example, people in high school, they text message a lot. But I ask my father if he texted messages, and guess what he said? M: What?W: He said he'd never text message. He thinks it's very childish and unprofessional(Q11) to text message. M: Yeah, I can see what he means. It's considered pretty informal to text message to someone.Q8: What does the man say about himself? DQ9: What does the woman tend to do while she is on the phone? BQ10: Why did the man text message all his friends when he first got his cell phone? AQ11: What does the woman's father think of text messaging? 科技英语阅读答案Unit 2

Appendix I Reference AnswersUnit 2 PhysicsPart I EST ReadingReading 1Section A Pre-reading TaskWarm-up Questions: Work in pairs and discuss the following questions.1.What is quantum physics?Quantum physics is the study of the behavior of matter and energy at the molecular, atomic, nuclear, and even smaller microscopic levels. In the early 20th century, it was discovered that the laws that govern macroscopic objects do not function the same in such small realms.2.Do you know anything about dark matter?Dark matter is a hypothesized form of matter particle that does not reflect or emit electromagnetic radiation. The existence of dark matter is inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter, such as stars and galaxies.A small percentage of the gravitational effects observed are from visible matter (someestimates are as low as 4% of total gravitational effects). The remaining 96% is presumed to result from dark matter or dark energy, though these terms are somewhat indicative of our ignorance of the exact nature of these unknown quantities, as they have never been directly observed. One possible candidate for dark matter are theoretical particles known as weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are being searched for by the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment.3.What is dark energy?Dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy that permeates space and exerts a negative pressure, which would have gravitational effects to account for the differences between the theoretical and observational results of gravitational effects on visible matter. Dark energy is not directly observed, but rather inferred from observations of gravitational interactions between astronomical objects, along with dark matter. The term "dark energy" was coined by the theoretical cosmologist Michael S. Turner.4.Have you ever heard of the big bang theory? Can you give an account of it?The Big Bang is the dominant (and highly supported) theory of the origin of the universe. In essence, this theory states that the universe began from an initial point or singularity which has expanded over billions of years to form the universe as we now know it.In 1927, Roman Catholic priest and physicist Georges Lemaitre independently calculated the Friedman solution and again suggested that the universe must be expanding. This theory was supported by Hubble when, in 1929, he found that there was a correlation between the distance of the galaxies and the amount of redshift in that galaxy's light. The distant galaxies were moving away faster, which was exactly what was predicted by Lemaitre's solutions. In 1931, Lemaitre went further with his predictions, extrapolating backwards in time find that the matter of the universe would reach an infinite density and temperature at a finite time in the past. This means the universe must have begun in an incredibly small, dense point of matter - a "primeval atom."5.How do you understand string theory?String theory is a mathematical theory that tries to explain certain phenomena which is not currently explainable under the standard model of quantum physics.String theory was initially developed in the 1970s in an attempt to explain some inconsistencies with the energy behavior of hadrons and other fundamental particles of physics. As with much of quantum physics, the mathematics that applies to string theory cannot be uniquely solved. Physicists must apply perturbation theory to obtain a series of approximated solutions. Such solutions, of course, include assumptions which may or may not be true. The driving hope behind this work is that it will result in a "theory of everything," including a solution to the problem of quantum gravity, to reconcile quantum physics with general relativity, thus reconciling the fundamental forces of physics.Section C Post-reading TaskReading Comprehension1. Directions: Work on your own and fill in the blanks with the main idea.Part 1 (Paras. 1-3): Brief introduction to dark energyPara. 1: Dark energy is an unexplained force which tugs galaxies away from each other.Para. 2: Dark energy is somewhat like anti-gravity.Para. 3: Dark energy is scientists‟ hypothetic form of energy to explain the universe‟s expansion.Part 2 (Paras. 4-9): The discovery of dark energy: confounding expectationsPara. 4: The discovery of dark energy is a case of science confounding expectations.Para. 5: Experts expected that gravity had slowed down the universe‟s rate of expansion.Para. 6: The universe‟s rate of expansion was speeding up.Para. 7: The result was beyond experts‟ expec tations which caused much nervous laughter.Para. 8: The measurements of supernovae provided the evidence that the universe‟s rate ofballooning was speeding up.Para. 9: The scientists observed many supernovae at different distances to determine how fast they are speeding away from us.Part 3 (Paras. 10-13): The rate of the expansion of the universe: shocking resultsPara. 10: The rate of the universe‟s expansion is accelerating.Para. 11: More researches done by other experts also show the same results.P ara. 12: Einstein‟s cosmological constant has been revived to explain the puzzling findings.Para. 13: The cosmological constant is one of the leading theories to explain the expansion of the universe.Part 4 (Paras. 14-17): The difference between dark energy and dark matterPara. 14: The confusion of dark energy and dark matter.Para. 15: Dark matter is an invisible hypothesized form of matter.Para. 16: Dark matter and dark energy seem to make up most of the mass of the universe.Para. 17: The discovery of dark energy stirred up a lot of other issues, such as making some people believe that there are several universes.2. Directions: Work in pairs and discuss the following questions.1)What’s dark energy before and after you studied the text? Before, I know nothing about dark energy. Now, I know that dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy that permeates space and exerts a negative pressure, which would have gravitational effects to account for the differences between the theoretical and observational results of gravitational effects on visible matter. Dark energy is not directly observed, but rather inferred from observations of gravitational interactions between astronomical objects, along with dark matter./od/classicalmechanics/a/gravity.htm2)In your eyes, what’s gravity an d anti-gravity?Refer to:/niujiashu@126/blog/static/100293042201051095050178//od/glossary/g/specgravity.htm/gravity_explains_gravity.html3)Did gravity slow down the rate of the expansion of the universe? Why or why not?No. Gravity was speeding up the rate of the expansion of the universe. The evidence was based on measurements of supernovae that astronomers were using as lampposts to track distance.4)Can you explain Doppler Effect in detail? The Doppler effect (or Doppler shift), named after Austrian physicist Christian Doppler who proposed it in 1842 in Prague, is the change in frequency of a wave for an observer moving relative to the source of the wave. It is commonly heard when a vehicle sounding a siren or horn approaches, passes, and recedes from an observer. The received frequency is higher (compared to the emitted frequency) during the approach, it is identical at the instant of passing by, and it is lower during the recession./wiki/Doppler_effect5)Do you know any story of Einstein’s cosmological constant? In physical cosmology, the cosmological constant (usually denoted by the Greek capital letter lambda: Λ) was proposed by Albert Einstein as a modification of his original theory of general relativity to achieve a stationary universe. Einstein abandoned the concept after the observation of the Hubble redshift indicated that the universe might not be stationary, as he had based his theory on the idea that the universe is unchanging. However, the discovery of cosmic acceleration in the 1990s has renewed interest in a cosmological constant./wiki/Cosmological_constant6)What is dark matter? What’s the difference between dark energy and dark matter?Dark matter is matter that is undetectable by its emitted radiation, but whose presence can be inferred from gravitational effects. Dark matter is invisible./wiki/Dark_Matter_(disambiguation)7)Is it true or false that the universe is formed mainly of dark energy and dark matter? Can you give some evidence?Yes. It is true. Some studies show that dark energy is thought to account for 74 percent of the universe, while dark matter adds about 22 percent.8)Are you one of the believers in multiple universes? Why?(Open)3. Directions: Read the following passage carefully and fill in the blanks with the wordsyou’ve learned in the text.Dark energy — the mysterious stuff that is stretching space and speeding the expansion of the universe —is said to have been around at least 9 billion years. It is a hypothetical form of energy, which is somewhat like anti-gravity that draws galaxies away from each other. In the mid-1990s, when astronomers went about measuring the rate of the expansion of the universe, they surprisingly found that the universe‟s ballooning was speeding up, which was beyond many astrophysicists‟ expectations. Some other researchers also found that the universe is blowing up faster today than at any time in the past. All these puzzles open up an opportunity for some scientists to revive Einstein‟s discarded idea — cosmological constant. Though dark energy and dark matter (invisible) are separate entities, people are always confused about them.It seems that dark energy accounts for 74 percent of the universe, while dark matter adds about 22 percent. The discovery of dark energy is bizarre and adds fuel to the fire of believers in multiple universes.Vocabulary and Structure1. Directions: Give the correct form of the word according to the indication in the brackets. Then complete the sentences using the right form for each word. Use each word once.1)When triggered by an input pulse, a monostable multivibrator will switch to its unstableposition for a period of time, and then return to its stable state.2)Christian revival is a term that generally refers to a specific period of increased spiritualinterest or renewal in the life of a church congregation or many churches, either regionally or globally.3)Superclusters are large groups of smaller galaxy groups and clusters and are among thelargest structures of the cosmos.4)During his career, he created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, aswell as countless sketches and charcoal drawings.5)In computing and communications, data processing combined with telecommunications, e.g., the use of a telephone network to connect a remote terminal to a computer or to twointerconnect computers.6)Astrophysics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of the universe, including the physical properties of celestial objects such as galaxies, stars, planets, exoplanets, and the interstellar medium, as well as their interactions.7)An earthquake's hypocenter is the position where the strain energy stored in the rock is firstreleased, and is the point where the fault begins to rupture. This occurs at the focal depth below the epicentre.8)Anti-consumerism refers to the socio-political movement against consumerism, theequating of personal happiness with consumption and the purchase of material possessions.9)By inducing compression, mechanical properties such as compressive strength or modulusof elasticity, can be measured. Scientists may utilize press machines to induce it.10)Two-dimensional collisions, both elastic and inelastic, may be demonstrated on this table.2. Directions: Complete the sentences with the words given in the brackets. Change the formif necessary.1)Skin injury, infection, stress, and certain drugs may trigger psoriasis. Reading Comprehension Passage 1Pigeons have been used as messengers for 500 years, because of their special ability to find home. The mystery of the homing pigeon is on how it navigates and how it finds home. We now know that there are two ways that pigeons tell directions. First, they use the sun. Just getting rough directions from the sun is easy. However, getting accurate directions from the sun takes more care. To tell direction accurately from the sun, one needs to know the exact time. All plants and animals seem to have built-in clocks. Usually these biological clocks are not quite exact in measuring time. However, they work pretty well, because they are “ reset ” every day, maybe when the sun gets up.Do pigeons use their biological clocks to help them find direction from the sun We can experiment to find out. Heads nodded in agreement when he said, "High school English teachers are not doing their jobs." He described the inadequacies of his students, all high school graduates who can use language only at a grade 9 level. I was unable to determine from his answers to my questions how this grade 9 level had been established. My topic is not standards nor its decline (降低). What the speaker was really saying is that he is no longer young; he has been teaching for sixteen years, and is able to think and speak like a mature adult. My point is that the frequent complaint of one generation about the one immediately following it is inevitable. It is also human nature to look for the reasons for our dissatisfaction. Before English became a school subject in the late nineteenth century, it was difficult to find the target of the blame for language deficiencies (缺陷). But since then, English teachers have been under constant attack. The complainers think they have hit upon an original idea. As their own command of the language improves, they notice that young people do not have this same ability. Unaware that their own ability has developed through the years, they assume the new generation of young people must be hopeless in this respect. To the eyes and ears of sensitive adults the language of the young always seems inadequate.Since this concern about the decline and fall of the English language is not perceived as a generational phenomenon but rather as something new and peculiar to today's young people, it naturally follows that today's English teachers cannot be doing their jobs. Otherwise, young people would not commit offenses against the language.6. The speaker the author mentioned in the passage believed that __D___.A. the language of the younger generation is usually inferior to that of the older generationB. the students had a poor command of English because they didn't work hard enoughC. he was an excellent language teacher because he had been teaching English for sixteen yearsD. In the author's opinion, the speaker ___B___.A. gave a correct judgment of the English level of the studentsB. had exaggerated the language problems of the studentsC. was right in saying that English teachers were not doing their jobsD. could think and speak intelligently8. The author's attitude towards the speaker's remarks is ___ C _ .A. neutralB. positiveC. criticalD. compromising9. It can be concluded from the passage that _ D ___ .A. it is justifiable to include English as a school subjectB. the author disagrees with the speaker over the stadard of English at Grade 9 levelC. English language teaching is by no means an easy jobD. Language improvement needs time and effort10. In the passage the author argues that _ A __ .A. it is unfair to blame the English teachers for the language deficiencies of the studentsB. young people would not commit offences against the language if the teachers did their jobs properlyC. to eliminate language deficiencies one must have sensitive eyes and earsD. to improve the standard of English requires the effort of several generationsPassage 3Is there a “ success personalitytome ” i—ning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably to achievement If so, exactly what is that secret success formula, and can anyone cultivate itAt the Gallup Organization we recently focused in depth on success, probing the attitudes and qualities of 1 500 prominent people selected at random from Who ' s Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. H ere is one of the most important, that is, common sense.Common sense is the most prevailing quality possessed by our respondents(回答者).Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this category. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success. To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extraneous ideas and get right to the core of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: “Th^ey ability for success is simplifying. In conducting meetings and dealing with industry, reducing a complex problem to the simplest terms is highly imp ortant. ”Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do som ething to increase it The oil man ' s answer is that common sense ca definitely be developed. He attributes his to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their —and your own —mistakes.Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you cultivate these qualities, you' ll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed inWhd s Whosomeday.11. But at about age 15 or so, the men voluntarily began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work, and other activities. These men tended to view their nightly periods of unconsciousness as bothersome interruptions in their daily routines. In general, these short sleeps ” appeared ambitious, active, energetic, cheerful, conformist(不动摇)in their opinions, and very sure about their career choices. They often held several jobs at once, or workers full-or part-time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear “normal ” or “acceptable ” to their friends and associates. When asked to recall their dreams, the short sleepers” did poorly. More than this, they seemed to prefer not remembering. In similar fashion, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was to deny that the problem existed, and then to keep busy in the hope that the trouble would go away. The sleep patterns of the short sleepers" were similar to, but less extreme than, sleep patterns shown by many mental patients categorized as manic(疯人).The long sleepers” were quite different indeed. Baekeland and Hartmann report that these young men had been lengthy sleeps since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quite concerned when they were occasionally deprived of their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to recal l their dreams much better than did the “ short sleepers. ”Many of the long sleepers” were shy, anxious, introverted (内向),inhibited (压抑),passive, mildly depressed, and unsure of themselves (particularly in social situations). Several openly states that sleep was an escape from their daily problems.16. Short sleepers would be better off with more restPassage 5Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completes a university degree or diploma course could find a good career quite easily. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.Job seekers first have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers.Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors. When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job to be one of them.21. Others say that the opposite is true: those international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests. One country received its second-place medals with visible indignation after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents ' victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said, “This wasn 'tthheoIcnkt e ryn.aHti o cnkael yHaoncdkey Federationare finished. ” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team fotr laeast two years. The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted for not to receive the silver medals.Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national team, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism.26. According to the author, recent Olympic Games have ___ C_____ .A. created good will between the nationsB. bred only false national prideC. barely showed any international friendshipD. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred27. What did the manager mean by saying “… Hockey and the International Hockey Federation areBinished.A. His team would no longer take part in the international games.B. 高中英语阅读理解科技类二

高中英语阅读理解科技类二

高中英语阅读理解科技类二Medical drugs sometimes cause more damage than they cure. One solution to this problem is to put the drugs inside a capsule, protecting them from the body—and the body from them—until they can be released at just the right spot. There are lots of ways to trigger(引发) this release, including changing temperature, acidity, and so on. But triggers can come with their own risks--- burns, for example. Now, researchers in California have designed what could be a harmless trigger to date: shining near-infrared light (NIR,近红外钱) on the drug in the capsule. The idea of suing light to liberate the drug in the capsule isn’t new. Researchers around the globe have developed polymers(聚合物) and other materials that begin to break down when they absorb either ultraviolet(UV,紫外线) or visible light. But tissues also readily absorb UV and visible light, which means the drug release can be triggered only near the skin, where the light can reach the capsule. NIR light largely passesthrough tissues, so researchers have tried to use it as a trigger. But few compounds(化合物) absorb NIR well and go through chemical changes. That changed last year when Adah Almutairi, a chemist at the University of California, San Diego, reported that she and her colleagues had designed a polymer that breaks down when it absorbs NIR light. Their polymer used a commercially available NIR-absorbing group called o-nitroberizyl(ONB). When they catch the light, ONB groups fall off the polymer, leading to its breakdown. But ONB is only a so-so NIR absorber, and it could be poisonous to cells when it separates from the polymer. So Almutairi and her colleagues reported creating a new material for capsules that’s even better. This one consists of a long chain of compounds called cresol groups linked in a polymer. Cresol contains reactive(易反应的) components that make it highly unstable in its polymeric form, a feature Almutairi and her colleagues use to their advantage. Afterpolymerizing the cresols, they cap each reactive component with a light-absorbing compound called Bhc. When the Bhcs absorb NIR light, the reactive component with a light-absorbing compound called Bhc. When the Bhcs absorb NIR light, the reactive groups are exposed and break the long polymer into two short chains. Shining additional light continues this breakdown, potentially releasing any drugs in the capsule. What’s more, Almutairi says, Bhc is 10 times better at absorbing NIR than is ONB and is not poisonous to cells.1. According to the passage, which of the following could be the best trigger?A. Temperature changeB. NIR light.C. Acidity change.D. UV light.2. Why is ONB unsatisfactory?A. It breaks down when it absorbs NIR light.B. It falls off the polymer and triggers drug release.C. It has not come onto the market up till now.D. It is not effective enough and could be poisonous.3. Which word can be used to compete the following process of changes?D. combinedIf a diver surfaces too quickly, he may suffer the bends. Nitrogen (氮) dissolved (溶解) in his blood is suddenly liberated by the reduction of pressure. The consequence, if the bubbles (气泡) accumulate in a joint, is sharp pain and a bent body—thus the name. If the bubbles form in his lungs or his brain, the consequence can be death.Other air-breathing animals also suffer this decompression (减压) sickness if they surface too fast: whales, for example. And so, long ago, did ichthyosaurs. That these ancient sea animals got the bends can be seen from their bones. If bubbles of nitrogen form inside the bone they can cut off its blood supply. This kills the cells in the bone, and consequently weakens it, sometimes to the point of collapse. Fossil (化石) bones that havecaved in on themselves are thus a sign that the animal once had the bends.Bruce Rothschild of the University of Kansas knew all this when he began a study of ichthyosaur bones to find out how widespread the problem was in the past. What he particularly wanted to investigate was how ichthyosaurs adapted to the problem of decompression over the 150 million years. To this end, he and his colleagues traveled the world’s natural-history museums, looking at hundreds of ichthyosaurs from the Triassic period and from the later Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. When he started, he assumed that signs of the bends would be rarer in younger fossils, reflecting their gradual evolution of measures to deal with decompression. Instead, he was astonished to discover the opposite. More than 15% of Jurassic and Cretaceous ichthyosaurs had suffered the bends before they died, but not a single Triassic specimen (标本) showed evidence of that sort of injury. If ichthyosaurs did evolve an anti-decompression means, they clearly did so quickly—and, most strangely, they lost it afterwards. But that is not what Dr Rothschild thinks happened. He suspects it was evolution in other animals that caused the change.Whales that suffer the bends often do so because they have surfaced to escape apredator (捕食动物) such as a large shark. One of the features of Jurassic oceans was an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles, both of which were fond of ichthyosaur lunches. Triassic oceans, by contrast, were mercifully shark- and crocodile-free. In the Triassic, then, ichthyosaurs were top of the food chain. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, they were prey (猎物) as well as predator—and often had to make a speedy exit as a result.1. Which of the following is a typical symptom of the bends?A. A twisted body.B. A gradual decrease in blood supply.C. A sudden release of nitrogen in blood.D.A drop in blood pressure.2. The purpose of Rothschild’s study is to see _____.A. how often ichthyosaurs caught the bendsB. how ichthyosaurs adapted to decompressionC. why ichthyosaurs bent their bodiesD. when ichthyosaurs broke their bones3. Rothschild’s finding stated in Paragraph 4 _____.A. confirmed his assumptionB. speeded up his research processC. disagreed with his assumptionD. changed his research objectives4. Rothschild might have concluded that ichthyosaurs ______.A. failed to evolve an anti-decompression meansB. gradually developed measures against the bendsC. died out because of large sharks and crocodilesD. evolved an anti-decompression means but soon lost itBDC A BC A。

However, they work pretty well, because they are “reset” every day, maybe when the sun gets up.Do pigeons use their biological clocks to help them find direction from the sun? We can experiment to find out. We can keep pigeons in a room lighted only by lamps. And we can time the lighting to make their artificial “days” start at some different time from the real outside day. After a while we have shifted their clocks. Now we take them far away from home and let them go on a sunny day. Most of them start out as if they know just which way to go, but choose a wrong direction. They have picked a direction that would be correct for the position of the sun and the time of day according to their shifted clocks. The above experiment shows that homing pigeons can tell directions by the sun. What happens when the sky is darkly overcast by clouds and no one can see where the sun is? The pigeons still find their way home. So it seems that pigeons also have some extra sense of direction from the earth’s magnetic field when they cannot see the sun.1. Pigeons have been used as messengers, for they have special ability ______B_______.A. to send lettersB. to find homeC. to carry food for menD. to lead the way for people2. The secret of the homing pigeons is ________B_____.A. how they find foodB. how they find homeC. how they take a letterD. how they take care of children3. Pigeons have ___C___ to tell the direction when it is cloudy by using the earth’s magnetic field.A. sharp eyesB. sensitive hearingC. sense of directionD. brain wavesPassage 2 The speaker, a teacher from a community college, addressed a sympathetic audience. To the eyes and ears of sensitive adults the language of the young always seems inadequate. Since this concern about the decline and fall of the English language is not perceived as a generational phenomenon but rather as something new and peculiar to today's young people, it naturally follows that today's English teachers cannot be doing their jobs. English teachers should be held responsible for the students' poor command of English7. In the author's opinion, the speaker ___B___.A. gave a correct judgment of the English level of the studentsB. had exaggerated the language problems of the studentsC. was right in saying that English teachers were not doing their jobsD. could think and speak intelligently8. The author's attitude towards the speaker's remarks is ___C___.A. neutralB. positiveC. criticalD. compromising9. It can be concluded from the passage that ___D___.A. it is justifiable to include English as a school subjectB. the author disagrees with the speaker over the stadard of English at Grade 9 levelC. English language teaching is by no means an easy jobD. Language improvement needs time and effort10. In the passage the author argues that ___A___.A. it is unfair to blame the English teachers for the language deficiencies of the studentsB. young people would not commit offences against the language if the teachers did their jobs properlyC. to eliminate language deficiencies one must have sensitive eyes and earsD. to improve the standard of English requires the effort of several generationsPassage 3Is there a “success personality”— some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula, and can anyone cultivate it?At the Gallup Organization we recently focused in depth on success, probing the attitudes and qualities of 1 500 prominent people selected at random from Who’s Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is, common sense.Common sense is the most prevailing quality possessed by our respondents(回答者). Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this category. And 61 percent say that common sense was very important in contributing to their success. To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to sweep aside extraneous ideas and get right to the core of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: “The key ability for success is simplifying. In conducting meetings and dealing with industry, reducing a complex problem to the simplest terms is highly important.”Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it? The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He attributes his to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their — and your own — mistakes.Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you cultivate these qualities, you’ll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in Who’s Who someday.11. However, they work pretty well, because they are “reset” every day, maybe when the sun gets up.Do pigeons use their biological clocks to help them find direction from the sun We can experiment to find out. We can keep pigeons in a room lighted only by lamps. And we can time the lighting to make their artificial “days” start at some different time fr om the real outside day. After a while we have shifted their clocks. Now we take them far away from home and let them go on a sunny day. Most of them start out asif they know just which way to go, but choose a wrong direction. They have picked a direction that would be correct for the position of the sun and the time of day according to their shifted clocks. The above experiment shows that homing pigeons can tell directions by the sun. What happens when the sky is darkly overcast by clouds and no one can see where the sun is The pigeons still find their way home. Soit seems that pigeons also have some extra sense of direction from the earth’s magnetic field when they cannot see the sun.1. All plants and animals reset their biological clocks when________A______.A. the sun risesB. the sun setsC. the moon risesD. the moon sets4. The experiment tells us that the pigeons fly ____C__ because of the shifted biological clocks.A. in a wrong directionB. in a correct directionC. in all directionsD. in a circle5. Pigeons have ___C___ to tell the direction when it is cloudy by using the earth’s magnetic field.A. sharp eyesB. sensitive hearingC. sense of directionD. brain wavesPassage 2The speaker, a teacher from a community college, addressed a sympathetic audience. What the speaker was really saying is that he is no longer young; he has been teachingfor sixteen years, and is able to think and speak like a mature adult. As their own command of the language improves, they notice that young people donot have this same ability. Unaware that their own ability has developed through the years, they assume the new generation of young people mustbe hopeless in this respect. To the eyes and ears of sensitive adultsthe language of the young always seems inadequate.Since this concern about the decline and fall of the Englishlanguage is not perceived as a generational phenomenon but rather as something new and peculiar to today's young people, it naturally follows that today's English teachers cannot be doing their jobs. In the passage the author argues that ___A___.A. it is unfair to blame the English teachers for the language deficiencies of the studentsB. young people would not commit offences against the language if the teachers did their jobs properlyC. to eliminate language deficiencies one must have sensitive eyes and earsD. to improve the standard of English requires the effort of several generationsPassage 3Is there a “success personality”— some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably to achievement If so, exactly what is that secret success formula, and can anyone cultivate itAt the Gallup Organization we recently focused in depth on success, probing the attitudes and qualities of 1 500 prominent people selected at random from Who’s Who in America. Our res earch finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is, common sense.Common sense is the most prevailing quality possessed by our respondents(回答者). Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top scorein this category. In conducting meetings and dealing with industry, reducing a complex problem to the simplest terms is hi ghly important.”Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. It can be known from the passage that Who’s Who___C___.A. is a very useful book telling us how to succeedB. is a book providing us with the information about the family life of some famous peopleC. is a book providing us with the names and brief biographies of the top successful peopleD. is a book from which we can find out the names of different peoples in the world12. According to the author, common sense____B__.A. is something that common people like bestB. is something that enables one to form correct opinionsC. is a popular quality a person is born withD. is a quality that is possessed by common people13. The word“extraneous” in Paragraph 4 most probably means__D____.A. rightB. extraordinaryC. clearD. not related14. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor for success? BA. Intelligence.B. Modesty.C. Creativity.D. Good luck.15. The passage is mainly concerned with___D___.A. organizational ability and good work habitsB. the way to obtain big profits and achieve fame and successC. knowledge and interest which are primary to successD. what successful people have in commonPassage 4Baekeland and Hartmann report that the “short sleepers” had been more or less average in their sleep needs until the men were in their teens. But at about age 15 or so, the men voluntarily began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work, and other activities. These men tended to view their nightly periods of unconsciousness as bothersome interruptions in their daily routines. In general, these “short sleeps” appeared ambitious, active, energetic, cheerful, conformist(不动摇) in their opinions, and very sure about their career choices. They often held several jobs at once, or workers full-or part-time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear “normal” or “acceptable” to their friends and associates. When asked to recall their dreams, the “short sleepers” did poorly. More than this, they seemed to prefer not remembering. In similar fashion, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was to deny that the problem existed, and then to keep busy in the hope that the trouble would go away. The sleep patterns of the “short sleepers” were similar to, but less extreme than, sleep patterns shown by many mental patients categorized as manic(疯人).The “long sleepers” were quite different indeed. Baekeland and Hartmann report that these young men had been lengthy sleeps since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quite concerned when they were occasionally deprived of their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to recall their dreams much better than did the “short sleepers.”Many of the “long sleepers” were shy, anxious, introverted (内向), inhibited (压抑), passive, mildly depressed, and unsure of themselves (particularly in social situations). Several openly states that sleep was an escape from their daily problems.16. According to the report,___D___.A. many short sleepers need less sleep by natureB. many short sleepers are obliged to reduce their nightly sleep time because they are busy with their workC. long sleepers sleep a longer period of time during the dayD. many long sleepers preserve their sleeping habit formed during their childhood17. Many “short sleepers” are likely to hold the view that __C___.A. sleep is a withdrawal from the realityB. sleep interferes with their sound judgementC. sleep is the least expensive item on their routine programD. sleep is the best way to deal with psychological troubles18. It is stated in the third paragraph that short sleepers __B___.A. are ideally vigorous even under the pressures of lifeB. often neglect the consequences of inadequate sleepC. do not know how to relax properlyD. are more unlikely to run into mental problems19. When sometimes they cannot enjoy adequate sleep, the long sleepers might __A__.A. appear disturbedB. become energeticC. feel dissatisfiedD. be extremely depressed20. Which of the following is Not included in the passage? BA. If one sleeps inadequately, his performance suffers and his memory is weakenedB. The sleep patterns of short sleepers are exactly the sane as those shown by many mental patientsC. Long and short sleepers differ in their attitudes towards sleepD. Interviewees should try to give positive andhelpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job to be one of them.21. In Paragraph 1, the sentence “… those days are gone, even in Hong Kong…” suggest that ___D___.A. Hong Kong is no longer the good place for finding jobsB. nowadays, everyone in Hong Kong has an equal chance of finding a good careerC. it used to be harder to find a good job in Hong Kong than in other countries.D. in the past, finding a good career was easier in Hong Kong than elsewhere22. The word “relative” in Paragraph 2 could best be replaced by“______B____”.A. familyB. comparativeC. considerateD. slight23. The advice given in the first sentence of Paragraph 3 is to______B_____.A. find out what jobs are available and the opportunities for future promotionB. examine the careers available and how these will be affected in the futureC. look at the information on and probable future location of various careersD. study the opportunities and the kinds of training that will be available24. The word “prospective” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “___C____”.A. generousB. reasonableC. futureD. ambitious25. In paragraph 5, the writer seems to suggest that _____C___.A. interviewees should ask a question if they can’t think of an answerB. pretending to understand a question is better than giving an unsuitable answerC. it is better for interviewees to be honest than to pretend to understandD. it is not a good idea for interviewees to be completely honest in their answersPassage 6Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in a ragew hen he said, “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team for at least two years. The American basketball team announced that they would not yieldfirst place to Russia, after a disputable end to their contest. The suggestion thatathletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national team, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism.26. According to the author, recent Olympic Games have _____C_____.A. created good will between the nationsB. bred only false national prideC. barely showed any international friendshipD. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred27. What did the manager mean by saying “… Hockey and theInternational Hockey Federation are finished.”BA. His team would no longer take part in the international games.B. Hockey and the Federation are both ruined by the unfair decisions.C. There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.D. The Federation should be dissolved.28. The basketball example implied that ______A_____.A. too much patriotism was displayed in the incident.B. the announcement to prolong the match was wrongC. The appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decisionD. the American team was right in rejecting the silver medals29. The author gives the two examples in Paragraph 2 and 3 to show____C____.A. how false national pride led to undesirable incidents in international gamesB. that sportsmen have been more obedient than they used to beC. that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendshipD. that unfair decisions are common in Olympic Games30. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?DA. International contests are liable for misunderstanding between nations.B. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.C. Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.D. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.III. Vocabulary and Structure1.
