He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can lea rn to make your life it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (鼓起干劲) andwork better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get with a leisurely yawl and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble some search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. When ever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.76. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably _______.he is a lazy personhe refuses to follow his own energy cyclehe is not sure when his energy is lowhe is at his peak in the afternoon or evening77. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?A. Unawareness of energy cycles.B. Familiar monologues.C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family member.78. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should _____.A. change his energy cycle C. get up earlier than usualB. overcome his laziness D. go to bed earlier79. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ______.help to keep your energy for the day’s workhelp you to control your temper early in the dayenable you to concentrate on your routine workkeep your energy cycle under control all day80. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one’s energy.Dr. Kleitman explains why people reach their peak at different hours of day.Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycle.Children have energy cycles, too.参考答案Ⅰ. WritingFake CommoditiesFake and poor quality commodities are a serious problem. Many things can be faked such as soybean sauce, vinegar, bicycles, and many other things. The interests of consumers are affected, and many enterprises keep losing money because of cheap fake commodities. There are some reasons for such a phenomenon. The major one is the desire of some people to “make easy money”. These people think nothing of the law of the protection of intellectual property rights. To get rid of fake and poor quality commodities, the government should educate people to obey the law of the protection of individual intellectual property rights and not to sell any fake goods. The government should punish severely and close down all the factories producing fake goods。

Write your right letter on the Answer Sheet:(20%)Passage 1Public goods are those commodities whose enjoyment nobody can be effectively excluded. Everybody is free to enjoy the benefits of these commodities and one person’s use does not reduce the possibilities of anybody else’s enjoying the same good.Examples of public goods are not as rare as one might expect. A flood control dam is a public good. Once the dam is built, all persons living in the area will benefit—irrespective of(不考虑)their own contribution to the construction cost of the dam. The same holds true for highway signs or aids navigation(航海).Once a lighthouse is built, no ship of any nationality can be effectively excluded from use of the lighthouse for navigational purposes. National defense is another example. Even a person who voted against military costs or did not pay any taxes will benefit from the protection afforded. It is no easy task to determine the social costs and social benefits associated with a pubilc good. There is no practicable way of charging drivers for looking at highway signs, sailors for watching a lighthouse and citizens for the security provided to them through national defense. Because the market does not provide the necessary signals, economic study is to be replaced by the impersonal judgment of the marketplace.1.What does the passage mainly discuss?A. The advantage of lowering taxes.第 3 页2.Which of the following would NOT be an example of a public good as described in the passage?A.A stoplight.B.A bridge.C.A fire truck.D.A taxicab.3.In Paragraph 2,the word “holds”(Para. 2,Line 3)could best be replaced by which of the following?A. hasB. isC. graspsD. carries4.According to the passage, finding out the social costs of a public good is a _________.A. matter of personal judgmentB. daily administrative dutyC. difficult procedureD. citizen’s responsibility5.Which of the following statements best describes the organization of the first two paragraphs?A. A general concept is defined and then examples are given.B. Several generalizations are presented from which various conclusions are drawn.C. Persuasive language is used to argue against a popular idea.D. Suggestions for the application of an economic concept are offered.Passage 2At the bottom of the world lies a mighty continent still wrapped in the Ice Age and, until recent times, unknown to man. It is a great landmass with mountain ranges whose extent and elevation are still uncertain. Much of the continent is a complete blank on our maps. Man has explored, on foot, less than one percent of its area.Antarctica differs fundamentally from the Arctic regions. The Arcitc is an ocean, covered with drifting packed ice and hemmed in by the landmasses of Europe, Asia, and North America. The Antarctic is a continent almost as large as Europe and Australia combined, centered roughly on the South Pole and surrounded by the most unobstructed water areas of the world—the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The continental ice sheet is more than two miles high in its center; thus, the air over the Antarctic is far more iced than it is over the Arctic regions. This cold air current from the land is so forceful that it makes the nearby seas the stormiest in the world and makes unlivable those regions whose counterparts(配对物) at the opposite end of the globe are livable. Thus, more than million persons live within 2,000 miles of the North Pole in an area that includes most of Alaska, Siberia, and Scandinavia—a region rich in forest and mining industries. Apart from a handful of weather stations, within the same distance of the South Pole there is not a single tree, industry or settlement.6.The best title for this selection would be ______.A. IcelandB. Land of OpportunityC. Utopia at LastD. The Unknown Continent7.At the time this article was written, our knowledge of Antarctica was ______.A. very limitedB. vastC. fairly richD. nonexistent8.Antarctica is bordered by the ______.A. Pacific OceanB. Indian OceanC. Atlantic OceanD. All three9.The Antarctic is made uninhabitable primarily by ______.A. iceB. calm seasC. cold airD. lack of knowledge about the continent10.According to this article ______.A. 2,000 people live on the Antarctic Continent第 4 页B. a million people live within 2,000 miles of the South PoleC. weather conditions within a 2,000 miles radius of the South Pole make settlements impracticalD. only a handful of natives inhabit AntarcticaPassage 3If there is any single element that makes for success in living, it is the ability to profit by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to study defeat and actually profit by it in his next task. Confuse defeat with failure, and you are sure indeed to fail. For it isn’t defeat that makes you fail; it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of. They are daily incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it without humiliation, study it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to heal its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can arouse(唤起) within use such a compelling desire to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull it away, he will cling more and more tightly until his whole weight is suspended(悬挂).It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you use the power which defeat gives, you can accomplish with it far more than you are capable of.11.What does the author know?A. It’s not mentioned in the passage.B .He knows every success in life.C. He knows at least several cases of success.D. He knows every success that has been achieved by man.12.The person who was able to analyze defeat is likely ______.A. to achieve successB. to be a successorC. to be ashamed of his defeatD. to let a baby grasp a rod13.The author ______.A. advises you to confuse defeat with failureB. wants you to mistake defeat for failureC. orders you to confuse defeat with failureD. warns you not to confuse defeat with failure14.Defeat is valuable ______.A. in that it provides the guide and encouragement to successB. because it forces you to face it without humiliationC. because it makes you failD. because of your own refusal to see in it the guide and encouragement to success15.What does the author advice one to do with the power which defeat gives? One should ______.A. make unfair use of itB. turn it to practical accountC. explore itD. explain itPassage 4Dorothea Dix left home at an early age of her own free will to live with her grandmother. At fourteen, Dorothea was teaching school at Worcester, Massachusetts. A short time after she had begun teaching, she established a school for young girls in her grandparents’ home. Stress was placed on moral character at Dorothea’s school, which she conducted until she was thirty-three.第 5 页She was forced to give up teaching at her grandparents’ home, however, when she became ill. A few year of inactivity followed. In 1841 Dorothea began to teach again, accepting a Sunday school class in the East Cambridge, Massachusetts’ jail. Here, she first came upon insane people locked up together with criminals. In those days insane people were treated even worse than criminals. There were only a few asylums(疯人院) in the entire country. Therefore jails, poor houses, and houses of correction were used to confine the insane.Dorothea Dix made a careful investigation of the inhuman treatment of the insane. It was considered unfit for a woman to devote herself to such work at this time. But this did not stop Dorothea Dix in her efforts to provide proper medical care for the insane.Gradually, because of her investigations, conditions were improved. More than thirty mental institutions were founded or reestablished in the United States because of her efforts. Dorothea also extended her investigations to England and to other parts of Europe.During the Civil War, Dorothea served as superintendent(主管) of women hospital nurses in the Union army. When the war was over, she returned to her work of improving conditions for insane people.16.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. The Treatment of Mental Illness.B.

Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied. But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes the worker’s life more enjoyable, it does not actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, variety is not an important factor. Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important and there is no doubt that this is true. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated machines which must be used in a fixed way. Thus while freedom of choice may be important, there is usually very little that can be done to create it. Another important consideration is how much each worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines rather than one large one, so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem that not only is the degree of workers’ contribution an important factor, therefore, but it is also one we can do something about. To what extent does more money lead to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter wirking hours be so important to them.21. The passage is mainly about how to ____.A. promote workers’ competitionB. meet worker’s need for varietyC. ensure workers’ right of choiceD. improve workers’ performance22. According to the writer, variety enables a worker to _____.A. derive more enjoyment from lifeB. work in his own way more freelyC. fulfill his job requirements betterD. undertake greater responsibilities23. We learn from the passage that freedom of choice _____.A. can hardly function in a flexible manner第 4 页B. can hardly lead to increased productivityC. is hardly seen as effective by companiesD. is hardly available in the modern factory24. It can be inferred from the passage that, compared with large production lines, smaller ones give workers ____.A. a greater variety of interesting tasksB. a stronger sense of accomplishmentC. a better idea of the modern industryD. a clearer picture of essential factors25. According to the writer, higher pay can _____.A. make tiring work more interestingB. make up for longer working hoursC. help workers to live more happilyD. help to create greater procuctivityPassage T woWe live in a technological society. Almost every aspect of life in the modern world is influenced (for better or worse) by technology . Communications, transportation, manufacturing, mining and exploration, the service industries, medicine, agriculture all are dominated by methods and apparatus which are the results of technological advances. The basis of technology is science. without the fundamental discoveries and understanding provided by science, technology would be hit-or-miss(随意的) affair, lacking direction and making little progress. One can argue that our society is beginning to suffer from too much technology, but we will never return to the primitive life of our ancestors – technology is with us and it will remain with us.Just as it is important to study history so that we can appreciate how the world came to its present state, it is important to learn some of the basic concepts of science so that we can appreciate the role that technology plays in modern society. For without some knowledge of the scientific principles by which technology operates, one can neighter cope with technology nor assist in directing it into the proper channels. In recent times, we have had the general attitude that whatever is technologically possible should be done. It is now becoming increasingly apparent that our scientific and technological progress has outstripped (超越) our capacity to第 5 页perform or absorb everything that is possible. More and more, we weill have decisions to make: in what direc tions should the thrust of our new discoveries be made? The situation requires that we make intelligent decisions –decisions based in a knowledge and an understanding of what can be done, what will be the benefits, and what weill be the comsequences. One strength of the human condition is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to cope with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, reveal that the presence of social support helps people fight off illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives, and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulit es. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support –financial aid, material resources, and needed services – that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems.31. We learn from the passage that interpersonal relationships are important because _____.A. they are essential to people’s social well-being.B. they arouse people's desire for communicationC. they deal with problems in the informatoin eraD. they are effective in curing a range of diseases32. The biggest single need in computer technology is not for increase speed, or enlarged capacity, or prolonged memory, or reduced size, but for better questions and better use of the answers. Without taking anything away from the technicians, we think it might be fruitful to effect some sort of junction between the computer technologist and the poet. A genuine purpose may be served by tuning loose the wonders of the creative imagination on the kinds of problems being put to electronic technology. The company of poets may enable the men who tend the machines to see a wider range of possibilities than technology alone may inspire.A poet, said Aristotle, has the advantage of expressing the universal; the specialist expresses only the particular. The poet, moreover, can remind us that man's greatest energy comes not from his dynamos but from his dreams. But the quality of a man's dreams can only be a reflection of his subconscious. What he puts into his subconscious, therefore, is quite literally the most important nourishment in the world.第 10 页。

One in nine five-to-nine-year olds has a mobile. This will rise to one in five in a year or two, making this the fastest growing group of mobile users.A report on mobile safety says that while it is not sure whether they hurt users, children should not be allowed to use mobiles as much as grown-ups. This is because their brains are still developing and their bones are thinner, making it easier for mobile phone radio waves to pass through them. Mobile phone companies say they do not aim at under-16s, although some of their mobiles are designed to interest younger children. Many of the mobiles are paid for as a safety measure so that the child can always call a parent when necessary. However, when children see that their friends have a mobile, it can become popular among them.Professor Colin at Oxford University, who studies mobile phone radio waves, told BBC News ―It‘s new technology(技术) and the science is still developing. We have to be very careful about children—if there are any effects they would hurt young children more than grown-ups.‖ He suggested that children should be encouraged to use text messages rather than spoken conversations, this would reduce the amount of radio waves greatly.43.
