Every morning, I'd wake up and be able to see the mist rising off the river, with the mountains in the background. It was such a peaceful, gorgeous view. I felt like I was in a Chinese painting or something.During the days, we did all sorts of fun activities. One day, we went hiking up Moon Hill. It's this crazy cool mountain that has like a huge hole through the middle, so it looks like a half moon. The hike was kind of tough, especially in the crazy summer heat and humidity, but once we got to the top, the view was totally worth it. We could see the whole area for miles and miles.Another day, we went bamboo rafting down the Li River. We got in these tiny little rafts made of bamboo poles lashed together. This year in 8th grade, we are using a new English textbook published by ForeignLanguage Teaching and Research Press. It's a pretty thick book with a lot of content, but I've found it to be really interesting and helpful for improving my English skills.The textbook has 8 total units that we'll cover over the course of the school year. There are also vocabulary exercises to complete where you match the words to their meaning, fill in the blanks, or make your own sentences using the new terminology. Building up my English vocabulary is one of my biggest goals, so I appreciate how much emphasis the textbook puts on learning new words.The grammar instruction is decent as well, although I've found some of the concepts to be quite complex and difficult to fully understand. Each section has a few pages that explain a new grammar topic through examples and rules. For instance, in one recent section the grammar lesson was about using different verb tenses like present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect correctly. This was a whole week of outdoor activities and extremesports like rock climbing, zip-lining, kayaking, and hiking. We even went whitewater rafting down a rapid river! It was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. I conquered so many of my fears and pushed myself to limits I didn't even know I had. The scenery was breathtaking too. We got to see amazing waterfalls, forests, and mountain views. I have a new appreciation for nature now.When I wasn't at camp, I hung out with my friends a lot.
