19年英语一完型2019 English Test Paper 1: Cloze(1) Sleep is important for our physical and mental well-being. It is during sleep that our bodies repair and rejuvenate themselves. Lack of sleep not only makes us feel tired and sluggish, but also has negative impacts on our cognition, mood, and immune system.(2) Studies have shown that adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to function at their best. However, with busy work schedules and various distractions, many people find it difficult to get sufficient sleep. As a result, they may experience difficulty in concentrating, making decisions, and regulating their emotions.(3) Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that affects people of all ages. It is characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. Insomnia can be caused by various factors, including stress, anxiety, medication, or certain medical conditions. If left untreated, chronic insomnia can have serious health consequences.(4) There are several strategies that can help promote better sleep. Firstly, it is important to establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. This helps regulate our internal body clock and improves sleep quality. Secondly, creating a relaxing sleep environment is crucial. This includes keeping the bedroom dark, quiet, and cool, and using comfortable bedding. It is also beneficial to have a pre-sleep routine to signal to our bodies that it is time to relax and prepare for sleep.(5) Additionally, avoiding stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine close to bedtime can help promote better sleep. These substances can interfere with our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Alcohol should also be consumed in moderation, as it may disrupt normal sleep patterns.(6) Lastly, engaging in regular physical activity during the day can contribute to better sleep quality. Exercise promotes the release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters and can aid in relaxation. However, it is important to avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime, as it may increase alertness and make it more difficult to wind down.(7) In conclusion, getting enough sleep is essential for our overall well-being. By implementing healthy sleep habits and making lifestyle changes, we can improve the quality of our sleep and enhance our cognitive function, mood, and immune system.。

In order to turn the small, old school bus into an ice cream truck, the family put in a freezer, fridge and sink.“Getting it together was kind of an experience for all of us,” Rhonda said. “We had to go through the health inspector, we had to get signatures from the police department and the fire department.”“The community needed something to lighten up their day and make their day better,” Cassidy said. “I thought that this would be a good way to help everybody through their day.”She visits local businesses at a set time every Thursday and plans to hit up neighborhoods and parks in the evening, as well as serving ice cream at other summer events.Ice Cream Express serves Schwan’s products. “It’s quite a variety,” Cassidy said. “We have everything from the sundae cones to the sandwiches and Italian ice --- just about anything.”Now that the truck is up and running, Cassidy hopes her younger sisters will take it over when she leaves for college.“We have a daughter that’s going to be 13 here and that would be a perfect time for her to take it over in the next couple of years-if she wants to,” Rhonda said. “If she doesn’t want to, I think I would probably continue it if it’s still a want and a need in Dickinson.”So far, the reception to Ice Cream Express has been amazing, Rhonda said.“We haven’t had an ice cream bus in this town for years,” Rhonda said. “I think it’s gone over way better than we anticipated it to, which is great.”1. Most of the hares they track live less than a year—a hazard(风险) of being what Kumar calls “the cheeseburger of the ecosystem.”But snowshoe hares have a special skill: camouflage. They’re brown during the summer, but turn white for the snowy winter months.“There’re times when you’re tracking them and you know they’re really, really close, and you just can’t find them,” he says.Hares switch color in the spring and fall in response to light, when the days get longer or shorter. But if the snow comes late, you get a white hare on brown ground.“And they really think that they’re camouflaged,”Kumar says. “They act like we can’t see them.”Kumar calls this “mismatching”, and it’s becoming more of a concern with climate change.“If the hares are consistently molting(脱毛)at the same time, year after year, and the snowfall comes later and melts earlier, there’s going to be more and more times when hares are mismatched,” he says.Scott Mills of North Carolina State University leads t he research. He says they’re finding that mismatched hares die at higher rates. That’s a concern for the threatened Canada lynx, which mainly eats these hares.“It’s a very clear connection to a single climate change stressor,” Mills says.Hares might be a ble to adapt over time. Some snowshoe hares in Washington State don’t turn white at all. Mills is trying to figure out whether hares and other wildlife can adapt as fast as the climate is changing.“But how fast is too fast?” he asks.5. Perfect drying weather. Suddenly, I recalled my mother hanging laundry on a clothesline during my childhood. My sister and I had played hide-and-seek among the sweet-smelling sheets waving in the wind.I suddenly had a plan. After the wash cycle, we covered the maples with damp blue jeans, shirts, socks and towels. The only things that didn’t go outside were my underpants. And I persuaded my shameless husband to let his big boxer shorts stay indoors, too. There is a secret pleasure to hanging laundry outdoors. It is the perfect excuse to get up from the computer. While checking on the laundry in the backyard, I could commune(亲近) not only with cotton T-shirts, but also my cats. I could watch cautious deer run through the yard with their young, listen to nervous squirrels in trees and observe a family of wild turkeys by the road. I returned to my desk refreshed. And, except for the sandpaper feel of sun-dried bath towels, the drying method was a complete success. When autumn came, I’d scan the horizon each day to evaluate the chances of sun-drying. One morning I saw rain clouds. I had a load of wet clothes in my arms and no place to put them.I found my husband. Together we hung laundry throughout the house. Then my husband gave me a hug and a smile. “I think it’s time to buy a dryer…” he said,“… like, today.”“Good idea,” I said, just as the infamous Oregon rain started. Our sun-dried laundry habit was finished for the season.9. Most readers know that his real name was Samuel Longhorne Clemens, but how many know where the pen name “Mark Twain” came from? The answer shows Clemens' colourful early life before he became a writer. “Mark Twain” was the cry shouted on a ship when the ship entered a part of a river that was two fathoms(6 feet)deep. “Twain”is an oldfashioned way of saying “two”. Twain trained as a ship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years, a time that he wrote about in the humorous Life on the Mississippi(1883).The famous river would become an important theme in many of his works—who could forget the journey of Huck and Jim along it in his most famous book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1884)?With little education, he had to teach himself how to write stories. Whenever possible, he would go to public libraries. There he spent much time reading and thinking, which greatly helped him with his writing. On the other hand, his life experiences gave him wonderful material to write about and attract readers. Twain wrote in a style that has been called “local colour” because it shows great knowledge of local people and their customs. This gift is very clear in the two books for which Twain is still celebrated today:The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1876) and its followup The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many people call “The Great American Novel”.The most amazing invention in the book is the voice of Huck himself. Huck did not enjoy schooling. It shows in the way he uses language, in a spoken style. Only a master like Twain could copy the way a young southern boy talked so well.( )1. What does the underlined word “gift” mean in the passage?A. Twain's talent for selfteaching.B. Twain's “local colour” writing style.C. Twain's good sense of humour.D. Twain's experiences as a ship pilot.( )2. According to the passage, what is the best part of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?A. The deep social meaning.B. The exciting life experiences.C. The special way that Huck talks.D. The nice view of the Mississippi.( )3. Which is the most suitable place in the passage for the sentence, “Twain did not come from the writer's background you might expect.”?A. At the beginning of Paragraph 2.B. My English teacher, Marsha Pincus, did all that and more for me when I was growing up in inner-city Philadelphia, one of eight kids raised by a single mother.Mrs. Pincus told me to come by or to call her if I needed to. She cared about me. She gave a skinny kid like me some extra support. I was always something of a smart-mouth when I was young, but Mrs. Pincus helped me channel my enthusiasm (热情)into something positive. When she was out on maternity (怀孕)leave with her first child, a substitute teacher came in for English classes. On the first day, this teacher had trouble controlling the classroom. I watched kids cutting up in front of her and got really mad. This was my favorite class; I loved learning Shakespeare.I knew the substitute would talk to Mrs. Pincus and that she‟d be disappointed. “We need to stop this!” I shouted. Usually I was the one clowning around, but the kids seemed to listen. I ended up standing in front of the room discussing Julius Caesar. Later, the substitute told Mrs. Pincus about the skinny boy who taught the lesson. Mrs. Pincus said she knew right away what had happened. “Without her even naming you, I knew it was you,” she told me. Looking back, I think that was when the teacher in me started to emerge (显现). She and her husband were planning to attend a family party, so she wrote to a hotel and booked a room. She wanted to make sure the hotel was fully equipped, but didn’t know how to ask about the toilet facilities (卫生间设备). She just couldn’t bring herself to write the word “toilet”in her letter. After much thought, she finally came up with the old-fashioned term “bathroom commode”. But when she wrote that down she felt that she was being too forward. That B.C. business really stumped him. After worrying about it for a while, he showed the letter to some waiters, but no one could figure out what she meant either. So the hotel owner, finally coming to the conclusion that the lady was talking about the location of the Baptist Church, sat down and wrote the following reply: “Dear Madam, I regret very much the delay (延期)in answering your letter, but I now take the pleasure of informing you that the B.C. is located nine miles north of the hotel and is capable (有能力的)of seating 250 people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away if you are in the habit of going regularly, but no doubt a great number of people take their lunches and make a day of it. They usually arrive early and stay late. If you don‟t start early you might not make it in time. I would like to say it pains me very much not being able to go more often, but it is surely not because of a lack of desire on my part. If you decide to come to our hotel, perhaps I could go with you the first time you go, sit with you, and introduce you to all the folks.”46. A.that would hurt her sons self-respectB.intelligence doesn't mean everythingC.her son would forget his rankings soonD.her son was not strong enough for the truth()3.We can learn from the story ______.A.rankings can show intelligenceB.parents should encourage childrenC.no work can lead to a change in rankingsD.the experience in childhood is unnecessary()4.The best title for the passage may probably be ______.A.Hard-working BoyB.Mom's AnswerC.Son's RankingD.Little SeabirdsPassage 2I am not interested in making New Year's resolutions.Making promises to myself just because the calendar changed doesn't make any sense to me.But this year, there came a defining(决定性的)moment. It came when my adult children, who'd been home for two weeks, headed back to their homes. There was a sadness I felt as I waved until their cars went out of sight, not knowing when I'd see them again. But there was also a knowing at that moment that something in me needed to change. So I asked myself,“What is truly good in your life?”What is good is my relationships with my children, but not only those relationships. What also keeps my heart beating is creating a home,no matter who is there, and cooking balanced,plant-based meals, even if just for me.I find joy in nature and connecting with close friends and my family.I love doing photography and writing and teaching myself the piano.Whatever was missing from my life,at the end of last year,I knew about the parts that worked. And as winter ended and the last of the visiting children was ready to leave,I looked to the future.I think of my friend,Lisa, who in May lost her husband of 30 years to cancer, and who found herself on New Year's Eve with no one to be with. Her loneliness was profound at that turning-point moment, but her sadness was momentary(短暂的).“I realized I had a choice,” she told me.Instead of giving way to loneliness and despair, she chose to find something productive to do.We humans can become bored with defeat. We know something is just the other side, like a new year.I have two choices.I can brand myself as the long-suffering mother who never figured out how to live on after her children left.Or I can take to the piano in the center of the house each day and practice Ode to Joy(《欢乐颂》)with one hand until such time as I feel ready to play with two.()1.What can we know about the writer from the first four paragraphs?
