1. WritingPart I Writing1.Write a composition entitled What do Students Need English For? You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese: 下图是对不同专业学生学习英语的不同目的所做的调查结果,请描述并分析此图。

正确答案:What do Students Need English For? Today, it seems that nearly everyone is studying English, especially students. But what do they study English for? A survey made by a teacher at a university gives us some hints. The results of the survey suggest that students need English for different purposes. Most students learn English because they need to read English textbooks or journals or attend English lectures, while only a few students use it to talk to English-speaking visitors, attend seminars, and write letters, etc. There are also some differences between economics students and engineering students. Compared with engineering students, economics students need to read English business textbooks and write reports in English. Therefore, from the results of the survey, we can see that the purposes students learn English for vary with the academic field students study in. Whatever the purposes are, one thing is certain: Students need English, and English teaching should be strengthened in universities. 2.Write a composition entitled Generation Gap. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese:1.

英语专四2016年真题作文范文## English Answer:In the realm of education, the debate regarding the merits of traditional face-to-face instruction and the burgeoning trend of online learning has sparked a heated discourse. While each approach undoubtedly possesses its unique advantages, the time has come to acknowledge the unparalleled benefits offered by online education, which has emerged as the superior choice for countless students seeking flexibility, affordability, and accessibility.Foremost among the advantages of online learning is its unparalleled flexibility. Unlike traditional classroom settings, which are bound by rigid schedules and fixed locations, online education allows students to tailor their learning experience to suit their individual needs and commitments. With the freedom to access course materials and participate in discussions at their own pace, students can accommodate their studies around their work, family, and other responsibilities, fostering a more harmonious balance between education and personal life.Furthermore, online education offers significant cost savings compared to its traditional counterpart. By eliminating the expenses associated with physicalfacilities, such as classrooms, utilities, and transportation, online programs can pass those savings onto students in the form of lower tuition fees. Additionally, online students can often save money on textbooks and other learning materials, as many courses provide digital content and open educational resources at no additional cost.Accessibility is another key advantage of online education. With the advent of advanced communication technologies, students from diverse backgrounds andlocations can now access top-quality education from anywhere in the world. This is particularly advantageousfor individuals who may have difficulty attendingtraditional face-to-face classes due to geographical constraints, physical disabilities, or other challenges. Online programs provide an inclusive platform wherestudents from remote areas, underserved communities, and marginalized groups can participate fully in the learning process. Moreover, online learning fosters greater student engagement and autonomy. By leveraging interactive technologies and multimedia content, online courses can create a more immersive and engaging learning experience than traditional lectures. Students are encouraged to actively participate in discussions, collaborate with peers, and take ownership of their learning journeys. This increased engagement leads to deeper understanding and higher levels of retention. While online education offers numerous advantages, itis not without its challenges. Some students may miss the face-to-face interactions that are inherent in traditional classrooms. However, many online programs now incorporate synchronous and asynchronous video conferencing tools to facilitate real-time discussions and provide opportunities for students to connect with their instructors and classmates. Additionally, online learners may requirestrong self-discipline and time management skills to succeed in a virtual learning environment. In conclusion, the benefits of online education far outweigh its challenges, making it a superior choice for many students. Its flexibility, affordability, accessibility, and engaging learning experience empower students to achieve their educational goals without sacrificing their personal commitments or financial resources. As the world continues to evolve and technology advances, online education will undoubtedly play an increasingly prominent role in shaping the future of learning.## 中文回答:在教育领域,关于传统面对面教学和新兴的在线学习的优点的争论引发了激烈的讨论。

1. WritingPart I Writing1.For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then express your views on the importance of seizing every opportunity. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Seizing Every Opportunity In the above picture, metaphor is employed to compare opportunity to the sand. The sand is leaking from the hand little by little, which symbolizes that in many cases opportunities are missed by us from time to time. Nowadays, many people strive for success but fail again and again. The reason, in my opinion, doesn’t lie in their capability, but their attitude and action towards opportunity. Everybody is sure to have encountered some precious opportunities throughout the life. However, some people manage to grasp the opportunities and succeed while others pass up the opportunities and achieve nothing. The reasons may be as follows. Firstly, opportunity only favors those who cherish it. Secondly, lessons in history tell us that only those who have captured chances and paid efforts can eventually achieve success. Last but not least, there are so many theories which prove the importance and scarcity of opportunity. We have no reason to underestimate any opportunity. In my view, there is no reason for us to neglect or desert any opportunity. Instead, we need to seize every opportunity. It is certain that if we grasp every opportunity and work for it heart and soul, we can definitely walk to the shore of success.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marksHistorical Debate on Animal ExperimentationAs the experimentation on animals increased, especially the practice of vivisection, so did criticism and controversy. In 1655,the advocate of Galenic physiology Edmund O’Meara said tha t "the miserable torture of vivisection places the body in an unnatural state.”O'Meara and others argued that animal physiology could be affected by pain during vivisection, rendering results unreliable. There were also objections on an ethical basis, contending that the benefit to humans did not justify the harm to animals. Early objections to animal testing also came from another angle--many people believed that animals were inferior to humans and so different that results from animals could not be applied tohumans. On the other side of the debate, those in favor of animal testing held that experiments on animals were necessary to advance medical and biological knowledge. Claude Bernard-----who is sometimes known as the "prince of vivisectors " and the father of physiology, and whose wife, Marie Francoise Martin, founded the first anti-vivisection society in France in 1883 -----famously wrote in 1865 that "the science of life is a superb and dazzlingly lighted hall which may be reached only by passing through a long and ghastly kitchen". Arguing that "experiments on animals…are entirely conclusive for the toxicology and hygiene of man... the effects of these substances are the same on man as on animals, save for differences in degree", Bernard established animal experimentation as part of the standard scientific method.模拟题二Read carefully the following excerpt on first-tier cities livability in China, and then write your response in no less than 200 words, in which you should1.summarize the main message of the excerpt, and thenment on whether young people should choose the first-tier cities as their dwelling placeYou should support yourself with information from the excerpt.Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality. But it dropped to 74th and 119th in habitable and ecological environment, the report saidHuang Hui, a 27-year-old software engineer from Beijing, said he found the report objective". "Beijing has the best medical, academic resources compared with other cities, but it's not necessarily the best choice when it comes to being habitable, "he said.I’m proud of the cultural diversification in the city, but it’s a pity that Beijing sacrifices the most basic essentials, air and water, simply in exchange for all the rapid development.”In the past decade, there have been mounting problems in cities nationwide, including traffic jams, housing tension and food safety issuesHowever, many first-tier cities, despite their outstanding competitiveness, are barely people-oriented and hardly satisfactory in ecological protection, LI said.High housing prices have become the main reason that some cities are increasingly uninhabitable". About 76, 000students signed up to take the exam this year, down 6 percent from a year earlier, marking the lowest ever application level, according to Beijing Education Examination Authority. So, what is behind the lowering age of overseas Chinese students?First, going abroad is an alternative to the national college entrance exam, which has long been described as a stampede of "thousands of soldiers and tens of thousands of horses across a single log bridge”.“The enormous pressure will definitely harm a child’s physical and mental health, and I don’t think it's worthwhile that all the hard work goes into a one-time exam,” he added.Lu Jun, a senior consultant at Chivast Education International Co. which is the first approved intermediary agency by the Ministry of Education, said most Chinese parent firmly believe that the younger their children go abroad, the sooner they get accustomed to the local cultural and social environmentStudying abroad can cultivate young students to be more independent and more adaptable to new environments. A survey conducted by Peking University and Ganji. com, the leader of domestic classified websites, shows that nearly half of young graduates born after 1990 plan to stick to their first jobs for only one year“I see no reason to remain loyal to an employer who doesn’t reciprocate. I want stability, but I'm not willing to waste 5 years of my life working for a company when I have no opportunity of advancement, low pay, a poor environment, and zero benefits. If companies want us to stick around, they have to give us a reason to stay.“Job-hopping is good, maybe for the person since it gives him the chance to enhance his skills in different jobs. It also helps him search for the job he really likes and develops the knowledge of such a job.”I think job-hopping is necessary for people who are ambitious and want to have a bright future. It's especially very popular among young people if they think they cannot get any prospects of opportunity, promotion and fair treatment like salary or Position. Yes, if it is the case, I think it's the time for them to change to another job. As for me, I prefer to quit my Job to find another job, since the salary is not enough even to support my family. And my boss doesn't treat me well so I have no loyalty to this company.” Read carefully the following excerpt on the effects of part-time jobs on students, and then write your response in no less than 200 words, in which you should1.summarize the main message of the excerpt, and thenment on whether college students should have part-time jobs in their college days. You should support yourself with information from the excerpt.Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. The Effects of Part-time Jobs on StudentsWhile academics are the main focus of college students, many will also spend their college years in part-time employment. In the report "Student Employment and Higher Education: Empiricism and Contradiction”, members of the American Educational Research Association reported that more than 50 percent of students attending four-year colleges work part time. The reasons for working may vary ---earning funds for tuition or spending money ----but many benefits exist beyond the paycheck Classroom learning is important, but the culture of workplaces and offices is hard to impart within the classroom. Holding down a regular position outside the classroom will allow students to gain firsthand experience in office culture and politics, which will be helpful upon graduation and their first full-time jobIn today's weak economy, it is even more crucial for students to make as many valuable connections as possible. Working part time for a campus office or off-campus organization will allow students to network outside their social circles, giving them valuable recommendations and contacts for their full-time job search. Many on-campus part-time jobs will give students an opportunity to learn administrative skills, such as phone and email etiquette, office electronics troubleshooting and meeting manners. Gaining such skills while in school will place a student-employee ahead of the curve when they enter the full-time workforce.模拟题六Read carefully the following excerpt on people’s arguments on pros and cons of advertising, and then write your response in no less than 200 words, in which you should1.summarize the main message of the excerpt, and thenment on the debate and give your ideasYou should support yourself with information from the excerpt.Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Fake advertising cheats consumers and, in some serious cases, threaten people s lives.”People are more easily bombarded by various advertisements on the Internet, and they are so inundated with banner ads and spam email that they have begun to ignore internet advertising just as much as ads on traditional media. Sometimes, some virus brought by online ads will not only bring risks to the system of computer, worse still, some unhealthy advertisements would exert negative influences on people psychologicall y.”“One disadvantage of advertising on the Internet is that your marketing materials are automatically available for anyone in the world to copy, regardless of the legal ramifications. They believe it is insane and unreasonable for a person to be excited about a stranger, "she said.“But in fact, celebrity worship is the same as a hobby. Fans can feel happy and empowered from their hobby. Collectors are brain-damaged fans of antiques. For young people, what excites them are usually celebrities.”Miss Wang said most of the die-hard fans of these "little fresh flesh" are students who have a plenty of spare me, and about 99 percent are girls. She expects their celebrity worship will fade as soon as they graduate and go into the working world. Read carefully the following excerpt on safety of genetically modified food, and then write your response in no less than 200 words, in which you should1.summarize the main message of the excerpt, and thenment on whether we should advocate genetically modified food or not..You should support yourself with information from the excerpt.Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.Genetically Modified Food: Are They Safe? Two years ago in Edinburgh, Scotland, eco--vandals stormed a field, crushing canola plants. Last year in Maine, midnight raiders hacked down more than 3,000 experimental popular trees, And in San Diego, protesters smashed sorghum and sprayed paint over greenhouse walls. This far-flung outrage took aim at genetically modified crops. But the protests backfired: all the destroyed plants were conventionally bred. In each case, activists mistook ordinary plants for GM varieties. It's easy to understand why. In a way, GM crops ----now on some 109 million acres of farmland worldwide ----are invisible. You can’t see, taste or touch a gene inserted into a plant or sense its effects on the environment, You can’t tell, just by looking, whether pollen containing a foreign gene can poison butterflies or fertilize plants miles away. That invisibility is precisely what worries people. How, exactly, will GM crops affect the environment----and when will we notice?Advocates of GM, or transgenic, crops say the plants will benefit the environment by requiring fewer toxic pesticides than conventional crops. But critics fear the potential risks and wonder how big the benefits really are. "We have so many questions about these plants, "remarks Guenther Stotzky, a soil microbiologist at New York University. “There’s a lot we don't know and need to find out.”As GM crops multiply in the landscape, unprecedented numbers of researchers have started fanning into the fields to get the missing information. Some of their recent findings are reassuring; others suggest a need for vigilance. For many people the issue of using animals for science is black and white: either pro-animal rights, or very much in favor of using animals since we are the highest level creature. After analyzing the two contrasting viewpoints,we can summarize them as follows. Some people say that using animals in experiment is of great value and can promote the advance of medical science which is significant to the whole society. Others, however, deem that this behavior is not only inhuman but also forbidden by law. In addition, the research finding got by using animals in experimentation may be inappropriate and unreliable. As for me, I think both of them have some points, but we should never go to extremes. On the one hand, some higher-level animals share with us feelings, thoughts and behaviors and so we should look after them and respect them. If we are so unsure about the effects of a drug, then we should do further chemical testing before doing live and cruel animal testing. After all, few people are inherently cruel, and it is much more acceptable to test the drugs on a monkey than on a person. In short, being cruel for the sake of being cruel and with no tangible results to show for it is definitely stepping over a boundary of acceptable behavior, but at other times if the benefits of the research are explicit, tangible and valuable then I feel that the research is justified.

For each multiple choice question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONE(1)When I was twenty-seven years old, I was a mining-broker’s clerk in San Francisco, and an expert in all the details of stock traffic, I was alone in the world, and had nothing to depend upon but my wits and a clean reputation; but these were setting my feet in the road to eventual fortune, and I was content with the prospect. My time was my own after the afternoon board, Saturdays, and I was accustomed to putting it in on a little sail-boat on the bay. One day I ventured too far, and was carried out to sea. Just at nightfall, when hope was about gone, I was picked up by a small ship which was bound for London. It was a long and stormy voyage, and they made me work my passage without pay, as a common sailor. When I stepped ashore in London my clothes were ragged and shabby, and I had only a dollar in my pocket. This money fed and sheltered me twenty-four hours. During the next twenty-four I went without food and shelter.(2)About ten o’clock on the following morning, dirty and hungry, I was dragging myself along Portland Place, when a child that was passing, towed by a nurse-maid, tossed a big pear——minus one bite——into the gutter. I stopped, of course, and fastened my desiring eye on that muddy treasure. My mouth watered for it, my stomach craved it, my whole being begged for it. But every time I made a move to get it some passing eye detected my purpose, and of course I straightened up then, and looked indifferent and pretended that I hadn’t been thinking about the pear at all. This same thing kept happening and happenin g, and I couldn’t get the pear.(3)I was just getting desperate enough to brave all the shame, and to seize it, when a window behind me was raised, and a gentleman spoke out of it, saying:“ Step in here, please.”(4)I was admitted by a man servant, and shown into a sumptuous room where a couple of elderly gentlemen were sitting. They sent away the servant, and made me sit down. They had just finished their breakfast, and the sight of the remains of it almost overpowered me. I could hardly keep my wits together in the presence of that food, but as I was not asked to sample it, I had to bear my trouble as best as I could.(5)Now, something had been happening there a little before, which I did not know anything about until a good many days afterwards, but I will tell you about it now. Those two old brothers had been having a pretty hot argument a couple of days before, and had ended by agreeing to decide it by a bet, which is the English way of settling everything.(6)You will remember that the Bank of England once issued two notes of a million pounds each, to be used for a special purpose connected with some public transaction with a foreign country. For some reason or other only one of these had been used and canceled; the other still lay in the vaults of the Bank. Well, the brothers, chatting along, happened to get to wondering what might be the fate of a perfectly honest and intelligent stranger who should be turned adrift in London without a friend, and with no money but that million-pound bank-note, and no way to account for his being in possession of it. Brother A said he would starve to death; Brother B said he wouldn’t. Brother A said he couldn’t offer it at a bank or anywhere else, because he would be arrested on the spot. So they went on disputing till Brother B said he would bet twenty thousand pounds that the man would live thirty days, anyway, on that million, and keep out of jail, too. Brother A took him up. Brother B went down to the Bank and bought that note. Then he dictated a letter, which one of his clerks wrote out in a beautiful round hand, and then the two brothers sat at the window a whole day watching for the right man to give it to.(7)I finally became the pick of it.41. In Para. 1, the phrase “set my feet” probably means __________.A. put me asideB. start my journeyC. prepare meD. let me walk42. It can be concluded from Para. 2 that __________.A. the man wanted to maintain dignity though starvedB. the man could not get a proper chance to eat the pearC. The man did not really want the pear since it was dirtyD. it was very difficult for the man to get the pear43. Compared with Brother A, Brother B was more __________ towards the effect of theone-million-pound bank-note on a total strange.A. neutralB. negativeC. reservedD. positivePASSAGE TWO(1)The concept of peace is a very important one in cultures all over the world. Think about how we greet people. In some language, the phrases for greetings contain the word for peace. In some cultures we greet people by shaking hands or with another gesture to show that we are not carrying weapons --- that we come in peace. And there are certain symbols which people in very different cultures recognize as representing peace. Let’s look at a few of them. The dove(2)The dove has been a symbol of peace and innocence for thousands of years in many different cultures. In ancient Greek mythology it was a symbol of love and the renewal of life. In ancient Japan a dove carrying a sword symbolized the end of war.(3)There was a tradition in Europe that if dove flew around a house where someone was dying then their soul would be at peace. And there are legends which say that devil can turn himself into any bird except for a dove. In Christian art, the dove was used to symbolized the Holy Ghost and was often pain ted above Christ’s head.(4)But it was Pablo Picasso who made the dove a modern symbol of peace when he used it on a poster for the World Peace Congress in 1949.The rainbow(5)The rainbow is another ancient and universal symbol, often representing the connection between human beings and their gods. In Greek mythology it was associated with Iris, the goddess who brought messages from the gods on Mount Olympus. In Scandinavian mythology the rainbow was a bridge between the gods and the earth. In the Bible a rainbow showed Noah that the Biblical flood was finally over, and that God had forgiven his people. In the Chinese tradition, the rainbow is a common symbol for marriage because the colours represent the union of yin and yang. Nowadays the rainbow is used by many popular movements for peace and the environment, representing the possibility of a better world in the future and promising sunshine after rain.Mistletoe(6)This plant was sacred in many cultures, generally representing peace and love. Most people know of the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe at Christmas time, which probably comes from Scandinavian mythology. The goddess Freya’s son was killed by an arrow made of mistletoe, so, in honour of him, she declared that it would always be a symbol of peace. It was often hung in doorways as a sign of friendship.(7)The ancient Druids believed that hanging mistletoe in your doorway could protect you from evil spirits. Tribes would stop fighting for a period of time if they found a tree with mistletoe. But you will never see mistletoe in a Christian church - it is banned because of its associations with pagan religion andsuperstition. The olive branch(8)The olive tree has always been a valuable source of food and oil. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athena gave the olive tree to the people of Athens, who showed their gratitude by naming the city after her. But no one knows for sure when or why it began to symbolize peace. There is probably a connection with ancient Greece. Wars between states were suspended during the Olympics Games, and the winners were given crowns of olive branches. The symbolism may come from the fact that the olive tree takes a long time to produce fruit, so olives could only be cultivated successfully in long periods of peace. Whatever the history, the olive branch is a part of many modern flags symbolizing peace and unity. One well-known example is the United Nations symbol. The ankh(9)The ankh is an ancient symbol which was adopted by the hippie movement in the 1960s to represent peace and love. It was found in many Asian cultures, but is generally associated with ancient Egypt. It represented life and immortality. Egyptians were buried with an ankh, so that they could continue to live in the “afterworld”. The symbol was also found along the side s of the Nile, which gave life to the people. They believed that the ankh could control the flow of the river and make sure that there was always enough water.44.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Concept of Peace.B. Origin of Peace Symbols.C. Popular Peace Symbols.D. Cultural Difference of Peace.45.The rainbow represents the connection between human beings and their gods inall thefollowing countries EXCEPT __________.A. SwedenB. GreeceC. FinlandD. The second has us looking to the criminal justice system to cure behavior that is as much as anything the result of despair.(3)The welfare example is well known. We don’t want poor people to live in s qualor or their children to be malnourished. But we also don’t want to subsidize the indolence of people who are too lazy to work. The first impulse leads us to provide housing, food stamps, medical care and a cash stipend for families in need. The second gets us to think about “workforce”.(4)We’ve been thinking about it for two reasons: the “nanny” problems of two high-ranking government officials (who hired undocumented foreigners as household helpers, presumably because they couldn’t find Americans to do t he work) and President Clinton’s proposal to put a two-year limit on welfare.(5)Maybe something useful will come of Clinton’s idea, but I’m not all that hopeful. It looks to me like one more example of trying to manipulate people into taking care of themselves.(6)On the criminal justice side, we hope to make punishment tough enough to discourage crime but not so tough as to clog our prisons with relatively minor offenders. Too short a sentence, we fear, will create contempt for the law. Too longa sentence will take up costly space better used for the violent and unremorseful.(7)Not only can we never find the “perfect” punishment, our search for optimum penalties is complicated by our desire for fairness: to let the punishment fit the crime. The problem is that almost any punishment --- even the disgrace of being charged with a crime --- is sufficient to deter the middle class, while for members of the underclass, probation may be translated as “I beat it”.(8)So how can you use the system --- welfare or criminal justice --- to produce the behavior we want? The answer, I suspect is: You can’t.(9)We keep trying to use welfare and prison to change people --- to make them think and behave the way we do --- when the truth is the incentives work only for those who already thi nk the way we do: who view today’s action with an eye on the future.(10)We will take lowly work (if that is all that’s available) because we believe we can make bad jobs work for us. We avoid crime not because we are better people but because we see getting caught as a future-wrecking disaster. We are guided by a belief that good things will happen for us in the future if we take proper care of the present. Even under the worst of circumstances, we believe we are in control of our lives.(11)And we have trouble understanding that not everybody believes as we believe. The welfare rolls, the prison and the mean street of our cities are full of people who have given up on their future. Without hope for the future, hard work at a low-paid job makes no sense. Working hard in school, or pleasing a boss, or avoiding pregnancy makes no sense. The deadly disease is hopelessness. The lawlessness and poverty are only the obvious symptoms.(12)I’m not advocating that we stop looking for incentives to move poor people toward self-sufficiency or that we stop punishing people for criminal behavior. There will always be some people who need help and some who deserve to be in jail.(13)All I’m saying is that the long-term answer both to welfare and the crime that plagues our communities is not to fine tune the welfare and criminal justice systems but to prevent our children from getting the disease of despair.(14)If we encourage our young people to believe in the future, and give them solid evidence for believing, we’ll find both crime and pov erty shrinking to manageable proportions.48. What is the author’s attitude towards Clinton’s proposal to welfare?A. Pessimistic.B. Optimistic.C. Suspicious.D. Sarcastic.49. It can be inferred from Para. 7 that optimum penalties are __________ to the underclass.A. uselessB. hopelessC. frighteningD. humiliating50.

In the realm of academic discourse, the age-old question of whether independent thinking prevails over conformity remains a subject of perpetual fascination. While both perspectives possess their merits, the pursuit of independent thinking holds a paramount position in the evolution of knowledge and the advancement of society.Independent thinking fosters the exploration of novel ideas and perspectives beyond the confines of established norms. It encourages individuals to question conventional wisdom, challenge assumptions, and seek evidence-based understanding. By breaking free from the shackles of conformity, independent thinkers contribute to the tapestry of human knowledge and drive progress forward.Contrarily, conformity, while providing a sense of belonging and reducing cognitive dissonance, stiflescreativity and innovation. When individuals prioritize adherence to societal expectations over critical thinking, the collective mind becomes stagnant and resistant to change. Conformity can lead to a culture of groupthink, where individuals suppress their independent thoughts and opinions in favor of maintaining harmony. Moreover, independent thinking cultivates critical thinking skills, analytical reasoning, and the ability to make informed decisions. It empowers individuals with the autonomy to navigate the complexities of the world, synthesize information, and form their own conclusions. By fostering a spirit of inquiry and intellectual curiosity, independent thinking lays the foundation for a vibrant and dynamic society. As educators and members of society, we have a responsibility to encourage and nurture independent thinking. It is through the cultivation of critical minds that we can foster a generation of individuals who are equipped to tackle global challenges, embrace diversity, and shape a better future.

The greatest change occurs in grain consumption, which has dropped 4% from 49% in 1986 to 45% in 1990 in total food consumption. The second greatest change is in milk consumption, which increased from 10% in 1986 to 13% in 1990. But on the other hand, two trends can be observed in the consumption of meat and fruit and vegetables. From 1986 to 1989, meat consumption increased from 17% to 23% while that of fruit and vegetables dropped from 24% to 20%. From 1989 to 1990, meat consumption dropped a little to 21%, while that of fruit and vegetables increased a little to 21%.What has caused the great changes in people's diet? The main reason, I think, lies in the improvement in people's income level. With the development of our society, peopleare becoming richer and richer, which enables them to purchase more nutritious food such as meat and milk. In the meantime, grain consumption in people's diet consequently dropped. So from the analysis, we can draw a conclusion that our society is progressing and people are living a better life than ever before. We are now able to purchase more delicious and nutritious food, resulting in an improvement in our health. Directions: for this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition based on the graph below.Outline:1.Rise and fall of the rate of car accident as indicated by the graph;2.Possible reason (s) for the decline of car accidents in the city;3.Your predictions of what will happen this year.Food Year 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990Grain 49% 47% 46.5% 45% 45%Milk 10% 11% 11% 12% 13%Meet 17% 20% 22.5% 23% 21%Fruit and vegetables 24% 22% 20% 20% 21%T otal 100% 100% 100% 100% 100%Your composition should be no less than 120 words and you should quote as few figures as possible.范文:The graph shows the changing rate of car accidents in Walton city in 1990. The first two months of 1990 showed an increasing trend. The rate rose to 32 in March but fell to 26 in June. From June on the rate was rising again and reached the peak point 39 in August. After August the rate began to decline, and eventually dropped to the lowest point 16 at the end of the year. The highest rate in August was due to unfavorable weather conditions. Humidity and high temperature make drivers impatient, which easily leads to car accidents. The high rate in the first half of 1990 was also caused by the bad weather condition. In Walton Citythe excessive rain comes at early spring. The rain made road slippery, which often resulted in car accidents. This year the pattern is expected to change. The city government has raised fund to improve the road condition. Two new roads will be finised at the beginning of this year and are expected to open to traffic soon. Furthermore, the new road regulation provides that in summer every car must be air-conditioned. So I, like many other English learners, have met with difficulties in learning English during the past seven years. But I managed to overcome them and made much progress. The spelling and meaning of words can be said to be the first difficulty I met as a beginner. But I found our my own way to deal with them. As to spelling, I never copied a new work again and again to remember it, but tried to find its relevance to the sound. In fact, as long as I can read the word out, I can write it out. As to the meaning, I rarely recite its Chinese translation but often put the word into the sentence to learn its meaning. Moreover, if you use a word quite often, its spelling and meaning will be no problem. After all, we are learning English in order to use it.Grammar and idioms may be another difficulty. But I have also got over it. I have not read lots of grammar books. But I spent much time reading the articles written by native speakers or specialists in English. By doing so, I came to gain “a sense of En glish language”. I began to gain a feel for which sentences are “good English” and which are not. Finally, I want to say that overcoming all these difficulties requires perseverance. In the past seven years I spent at least an hour on English each day. I believe this is an important reason why I am able to make progress in learning English. Looking Forward to the Twenty-first Century范文:The new century is approaching. PART VI WRITING[45 MIN]Should we review traditional Chinese characters or continue using simplified characters? This has been an intensely discussed question for years. The following are the supporters' and opponents' opinions. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue.Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.Yes NoTraditional characters, which date back to more than 2000 years ago, have a more beautiful appearance and a more reasonable structure. As indicated by the 親and 愛examples, traditional characters make more sense, convey traditional values and can therefore represent traditional culture. For two millennia, Chinese historical records and classic works were written in traditional characters. To be able to read them and inherit traditional cultures, we need to bring traditional characters back. Politically, it is also necessary to restore traditional Chinese characters. Currently, traditional characters are still in use in Hong Kong, Taiwan and many Chinese communities around the world. Restoring them can contribute to cross-Strait exchanges and national reunifications and unite Chinese people around the world. In today’s world, efficiency matters most. Traditional characters, which usually have more strokes than simplified ones, are more difficult to learn. By contrast, simplified characters are much easier to learn and use. Over the past 50 years, lots of classic texts have been turned into simplified-character versions, which means simplified characters can also promote and preserve traditional culture. Constant simplification has been a trend in the evolution of Chinese characters. From the oracle bones script of 3000 years ago to traditional characters, the Chinese writing system has always been slimming down for better communication.

I. English Response:In the 2016 CET-4 writing section, the topic was about the importance of developing a habit of reading in children. This topic is quite interesting and relevant to our daily life. As a parent, I believe that cultivating a readinghabit in children is crucial for their overall development.First and foremost, reading helps children to expand their knowledge and vocabulary. When children read books, they are exposed to new words and ideas that they may not encounter in their daily lives. This can help them improve their language skills and become better communicators. For example, when my son started reading regularly, I noticed a significant improvement in his vocabulary and writingskills.Furthermore, reading can stimulate children's imagination and creativity. By delving into differentworlds and scenarios through books, children can develop their creativity and critical thinking skills. For instance, my daughter loves reading fantasy novels, and I have seen how it has sparked her imagination and inspired her towrite her own stories.Additionally, reading can foster a love for learning in children. When children develop a habit of reading, theyare more likely to seek out knowledge and information on their own. This can lead to a lifelong love for learningand a desire to explore new subjects. I have seen this firsthand with my niece, who used to dislike studying but now enjoys reading non-fiction books on various topics. In conclusion, developing a habit of reading inchildren is not only beneficial for their academic success but also for their personal growth and development. There are various factors contributing to stress, and it's crucial to identify these causes in order to effectively alleviate stress and lead a healthier life.First and foremost, one of the major causes of stressis the pressure from work or study. With the increasing competition in the job market and the demanding academic requirements, individuals often find themselves overwhelmed by the workload and expectations, leading to high levels ofstress. Moreover, the fear of failure and the constant need to meet deadlines only exacerbate the situation, leaving individuals feeling anxious and stressed.Another significant factor that contributes to stressis the imbalance between work and personal life. In today's society, there is a pervasive culture of achievement and perfectionism, where individuals are constantly striving for success and recognition. This relentless pursuit of perfection can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, ultimately contributing to stress and anxiety.Fortunately, there are various strategies and solutions that can help alleviate stress and promote mental well-being. Firstly, it's essential to prioritize self-care and make time for relaxation and leisure activities. Engagingin hobbies, exercise, or mindfulness practices can help reduce stress levels and promote a sense of calm and balance. Moreover, learning to set realistic goals and expectations is crucial in managing stress effectively. Instead of striving for perfection, it's important to focus on progress and celebrate small achievements along the way.

Honesty means speaking the truth and being fair and upright in act。

He who lies and cheats is dishonest; those who gain fortunes not by hard labour but by other means is dishonest。

Honesty is a good virtue。

If you are honest all the time, you'll be trusted and respected by others。

A liar is always looked down upon and regarded as a black sheep by the people around。

Once you lie, people will never believe you even if you speak the truth。

However, in the tide of commodity economy today, it seems that more and more people believe in money at the sacrifice of honesty。

To them, among such things as health, beauty, money, intelligence, honesty, reputation and talent, honesty is the only thing that can be erased away。

They don't understand or pretend not to understand that honesty is the biggest fortune human beings own, and that it is the prerequisite for doing everything well。

例如: should private car owners be taxed for pollution? ......truly, the private cars have causedmany problems. according to a recent research, many emissions among all the greenhouse gases are from theprivate cars. the painful experiences in the past have taught us to live in harmony with nature and manage to avoid anyincidents that may have an adverse effect on the environment. besides, the contaminants sent by the cars are very harmful to our health. the pollutants will have a persistent impact on human body and are likely to cause a number of diseases. above all, in recent years the number of private cars is growing at an unprecedented rate....... 修正后: ......to start with, the emission from cars contributes to the environment pollution. according to the study, the total gas emission of the private cars amounts to 30~60% among all the greenhouse gases, which leads to the deterioration of the whole ecosystem, such as climate change, acid rain and greenhouse effect. so it is these private car owners who should pay for the pollution, and it’ll be fair to use the tax revenue levied on their cars to treat air pollution. in addition, tax for pollution will be a good way to solve traffic jams which are becoming more and more severe due to the soaring number of private cars. with oil price becoming higher and higher, additional tax for pollution is surely a burden. then those who want to buy cars will consider more when deciding to buy a private car. consequently, the increasing rate of the number of the private cars and then the traffic jam can be controlled.......
