Mo Yan, a Chinese writer, was born in 1955 and grew up in Gaomi, a small city in Shandong province. His family was so poor that he had to leave school to work at the age of 12. In 1976, he joined the People’s Liberation Army and it was during this time that he began to study literature and writing. His famous novel, Red Sorghum, successfully filmed in 1987, which consists of five stories. Recently, he has been awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for literature and now he is considered as one of the most important contemporary authors in China.
