I've heard great things about their food.John: Yes, me too. I've heard that their chef is quite famous in the culinary world. Let's make sure we follow proper table manners.Amy: Absolutely, John. It's important to show respect and professionalism when dining out. I remember there are some rules we should follow.John: Yes, there are a few key things to keep in mind. Firstly, we should always wait until everyone is served before starting to eat.Amy: That's a good point, John. It shows consideration for others and allows us to enjoy the meal together. Also, we should remember to chew with our mouths closed and avoid speaking with food in our mouths.John: Right, Amy. It's important to maintain good hygiene and avoid any unpleasantries. And speaking of talking, we should keep our voices at a moderate level, so as not to disturb other diners.Amy: Absolutely, John. We want to create a pleasant environment for everyone. Another important aspect of table manners is to use the correct utensils. We should start from the outside and work our way in with each course.John: Yes, Amy. That's a good reminder. It's best to observe others around us if we're unsure about which utensil to use. And we should also remember not to reach across the table for food. Instead, we should ask the person nearest to the dish to pass it to us.Amy: Great point, John. It's important to avoid any unnecessary reaching or interrupting other people's conversations. Oh, and I almost forgot, we should always place our napkins on our laps once seated.John: That's right, Amy.

A: A Westerner said to his Chinese friend. “Chinese people slurp when drinking soup. It’s disgusting.” The Chinese friend replied, “Westerners make a lot of noise licking their fingers when eating. It’s even worse.”B: Everyone has his own habits, but these habits are not very good. The noise often spoils other people’s appetite.A: I attended a course on table manners while I was in the United States. Some of the things we learnt included how to place the napkin and utensils and how to pass the bread. Before each course, the teacher would ask if we wanted to learn the Continental European way or the American way. We always said “American way.” It’s amazing that everyone is so used to their own table manners. What is the Chinese way?B: The westerners use knives and forks to eat so it is complicated. The Chinese use a pair of chopsticks and eat out of the same plate. I assume it is less complicated, right?A: Not really. I did some research about Chinese table manners. The important rule is to remain silent while eating. Of course, this refers to family meals only. Not talking over meals is supposed to be good for the health. It is impolite if people do not talk to each other during a social party. The table arrangements and serving order for a social party are equally complicated. Each dish should be placed in the correct position. When fish is served, the tail should be pointing at the guestbecause tail meat is supposed to be tasty. If it is in winter, the stomach should face the right-hand side of the guest because that portion of the fish is very rich in winter. Each dish should be commenced by the eldest person who is seated at the head of the table. The diners should sit close to the table so food won’t drop on their cloths. Not noise should be made when chewing. No one should move food back to the communal plate even if he doesn’t like it. On e should drink soup slowly and is not supposed to make a lot of noise. All these table manners are very similar to Western habits.B: It seems that people share the same basic sense of etiquette regardless of their background. Apart from the different tools used for eating we seem to follow the same principles. We do not let inappropriate manners spoil other people’s appetite.Westerners like to say, “bon appetite” before meals which is one way to suggest “mind your table manners.” Is there such an expression in Chinese?A:Yes. We say “eat well and drink well.” A:Hello,B!I read an article about western table manners.I found that there are many similarities and differences betwee western table manners and chinese table manners.B:Yes.For example:When you are bidden to the feast, you are more interested in talking with people around you than having any dish.So when you have your meals, you should try your best to make less sound and action.A:Yes.But in western countries before hostess pick up her spoon or fork, gests mustn't taste any dish. The hostess won't start her meal until all the guests get their dishes. She won't do it like chinese, want you have first. It means that everyone can have theirown meals when the hostess pick up her spoon or fork.B:And in China, people wear casual clothes when they have meals in the restaurant, even the T-shirt and jeans are available.Only in important banquet do they wear grandly. But it requires people wear formal dress.A:And the people seat of traditional chinese food is not that exquisite like in western countries. Most of them are seated according to their own willings and without napkin.B:However,it's very exquisite in western countries.A:Yes,we have a lot to learn.B:Of course英语餐桌礼仪话题对话阅读篇三AWe are going out for dinner tonight.

Oh, Mark, what is this small dish next to my plate?Mark: That's a bread and butter plate, Anna. It's used for holding a small piece of bread or butter during the meal.Anna: I see. Thank you for explaining that. By the way, where should I place my napkin?Mark: Your napkin should be placed on your lap, Anna, as soon as you sit down. It is considered good manners to unfold it quietly and place it on your lap.Anna: Okay, got it. And what about the utensils? Which one should I use first?Mark: Usually, you should start with the utensils on the outside and work your way in as the meal progresses. The ones closest to the plate are for the main course.Anna: Ah, I see. So, I'll start with the fork on the far left and the knife on the far right. Is that correct?Mark: Exactly, Anna. It's also polite to place your napkin on your chair to indicate that you will return.Anna: Understood. And what should I do when I finish eating? That's a helpful tip. Thank you for sharing it, Mark.By the way, what if I accidentally drop my utensil on the floor? Mark: If you drop a utensil, it's best to ask the server for a replacement. They will be happy to provide you with a clean one. Anna: I'll keep that in mind. Thank you, Mark. I really appreciate your guidance on proper table manners.Mark: You're welcome, Anna.

B(1): Honey, which hand should I use to hold the fork?
C(1): Left for the fork and right for the knife. Just remember that the stronger one is for knife.
B(1): Got it. It's so troublesome to have western food. I've been learning the table manners for hours but still can't master it.
C(1): Sure. Rather than eating, having western food is more about western culture.
B(1): Yeah. Which restaurant are we going to tonight?
C(1): Cindy has reserved a table for us at a newly opened western restaurant downtown. She said the environment there was really pleasant. B(1): Fine. I believe in Cindy's taste. Oh, what should I wear?
C(1): You should put on the black suit I bought for you last week. But I'm afraid it may be a bit crumpled. You'd better iron it now.
B(1): I don't want to mess it up. Please do it for me. I'm going to the bank to cash some money. How much do we need?
C(1): There is no need to do that. I think the restaurant accepts credit cards. But it's necessary to make a budget.
B(1): Honey, you are a good accountant. So I'd better leave that to you, too.
C(1): It seems that it's all about me. Then what do you do?
B(1): I'll take care of the order.
C(1): OK then. Well, 50 Yuan for appetizer, 200 Yuan for dinner and 200 Yuan for wine. Anything else?
B(1): Don't forget about the dessert.
C(1): OK, then 50 Yuan for dessert. 500 Yuan all together.
Having A Dinner in A Restaurant
A: Good evening. Do you have a reservation?
B: No, we don''t.
A: How many people are you together?
B: Just two persons.
A: This is menu. Are you ready to order now?
B: Sorry, we haven''t decided yet. Could you please give us a little longer?
A: No problem.
B: Well, I think I would like to have a shrimp cocktail and the Bato sausage soup first. How about you, C.
C: The same for me, please.
A: Yes, sir.
C: What main dish would you like, B?
B: Well, I''d like the sole, please.
C: I''ll have the sirloin steak.
A: Yes. What would you like to drink?
C: Red wine for me. And you, B?
B: I think I''ll have beer.
C: One goblet of red wine and one bottle of beer, please.
A: Would you like a dessert?
C: What special kind of desserts do you have?
A: Lemon pie, hot cake in syrup, chocolate sundae and custard pudding. B: Well, I think we''ll order after we finish the main course.
A: All right, I''ll bring the soup right away.
