阅读理解专练(M7)Unit 1 Living WellAWould you believe that the first outstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman? His name was Laurent Clerc. He became a friend of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and together they founded America's first school for the deaf.Laurent Clerc was born in a small village near Lyons, France, on December 26, 1785. When he was one year old, he fell into a fire, losing both his hearing and his sense of smell. At 12, Laurent entered the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris where he excelled in his studies. After he graduated, the school asked him to stay on as an assistant teacher.Meanwhile, in America, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was studying to be a minister. He was very concerned about the lack of educational opportunities for the deaf. Therefore, in 1815, Gallaudet sailed to London, England to seek ideas on how to teach deaf people. While he was there, he met a French educator of the deaf who invited him to go to Paris to spend three months learning at the Royal Institution for the Deaf, the school where Laurent Clerc was teaching. Gallaudet accepted the offer. The two worked and studied well together. When the time came for Gallaudet to return, he asked Clerc to come with him. Clerc accepted on one condition: that he would stay in America only a short time. The two men set sail on June 18, 1816. The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean took 52 days; however, Clerc and Gallaudet put the time to good use. Clerc studied English, and Gallaudet studied sign language. They discussed the school for the deaf which they planned to open. On the long trip, they had many conversations about education and deafness. The year after they arrived, they founded a school for the deaf in Harford, Connecticut. At the school, Clerc led a busy life. He taught signs to Principal Gallaudet; he taught the pupils; and he taught hearing men who came to the school to study deaf education. In 1819, Clerc married Eliza Crocker Boardman, one of his pupils. They had six children. He retired from teaching in 1858. Although he had intended to return to France, he never did. He died on July 18, 1869 in the United States.1. I was so seriously injured that I was in a coma formore than two months at Prince Georges Hospital.I suffered a lot from the experience of dying eight times during mycoma and I couldn’t op en my mouth to talk or to communicate when Ieventually came around. At that time, it seemed that walking was never goingto happen again due to all the extreme injuries. Just like my body, my dreamswere completely destroyed. But I was not going to let my injuries stop mefrom realizing my dreams. After receiving a total of 15 operations and 36 blood transfusions, I hadto make every great effort to learn to talk, eat, walk, shower, and live on myown again. When I was out of hospital, I still had to go to outpatient therapyin Waldorf, Maryland. After I spent a few months in a wheelchair, I tookbaby steps to walk on my own. It was a miracle that I was able to walk again, but I still wanted to prove that I could not only walk, but also run. When itcame true, I wanted to get back into the pool again. After having a few lungtests, I was able to go in the pool a little bit each week. After a few months ofswim training, I began my freshman year at St. Mary’s College of Marylandand then became a proud member of the swim team.By telling my story, I want to make a positive influence on the world. Iam just trying to live each day to the fullest and inspire other people never togive up their d reams no matter how bad a situation is to them. I rememberwhen I was still in my hospital bed, I would have my mom and dad push meround in my wheelchair to the other rooms to see the other patients and chatwith them and their family members. Bobby, themail carrier, brings mail to a large office building in Washington, D.C. He isone of 250 mail carriers in the United States.Mr. Leachim, who weighs two hundred pounds and is six feet tall, hassome advantages as a teacher. One is that he does not forget details. Heknows each child’s name, the parents’ names and what each child knows andneeds to know. In addition, he knows each child’s pets and hobbies. Mr.Leachim does not make mistakes. Each child goes and tells him his or hername, then dials an identification number. His computer brain puts the child’svoice and number together. He identifies the child with no mistakes. Then hestarts the lesson.Another advantage is that Mr. Leachim is flexible. If the children need more time to do their lessons they can move switches. In this way they can repeat Mr. Leachim’s lesson over and over again. When the children do a good job, he tells them something interesting about their hobbies. At the end of the lesson the children switch Mr. Leachim off.1. The lessons taught by Mr. Leachim are given on a TV set.BSince the dawn of human ingenuity, people have devised ever more cunning tools to cope with work that is dangerous, boring, burdensome, or just plain nasty. That compulsion has resulted in robotics-the science of conferring various human capabilities on machines. And if scientists have yet to create the mechanical version of science fiction, they have begun to come close. As a result, the modern world is increasingly populated by intelligent gizmos whose presence we barely notice but whose universal existence has removed much hum an labor. Our factories hum to the rhythm of robot assembly arms. Our banking is done at automated teller terminals that thank us with mechanical politeness for the transaction. Our subway trains are controlled by tireless robo-drivers. And thanks to the continual miniaturization of electronics and micro-mechanics, there are already robot systems that can perform some kinds of brain and bone surgery with submillimeter accuracy-far greater precision than highly skilled physicians can achieve with their hands alone. But if robots are to reach the next stage of laborsaving utility, they will have to operate with less human supervision and be able to make at least a few decisions for themselves-goals that pose a real challenge. “While we know how to tell a robot to handle a specificerror,” says Dave Lavery, manager of a robotics program at NASA, “we can'tyet give a robot enough ‘commonsense’ t o reliably interact with a dynamicworld.” Indeed the quest for true artificial intelligence has produced verymixed results. Despite a spell of initial optimism in the 1960s and 1970swhen it appeared that transistor circuits and microprocessors might be able tocopy the action of the human brain by the year 2010, researchers lately havebegun to extend that forecast by decades if not centuries. What they found,in attempting to model thought, is that the human brain's roughly one hundredbillion nerve cells are much more talented-and human perception far morecomplicated-than previously imagined. They have built robots that canrecognize the error of a machine panel by a fraction of a millimeter in acontrolled factory environment. But the human mind can glimpse a rapidlychanging scene and immediately disregard the 98 percent that is irrelevant, instantaneously focusing on the monkey at the side of a winding forest roador the single suspicious face in a big crowd. The most advanced computersystems on Earth can't approach that kind of ability, and neuroscientists stilldon't know quite how we do it.1. Human ingenuity was initially demonstrated in _____.A. the use of machines to produce science fictionB. the wide use of machines in manufacturing industryC. the invention of tools for difficult and dangerous workD. the elite's cunning tackling of dangerous and boring work2. According to the text, what is beyond man's ability now is to design a robotthat can _____.A. fulfill delicate tasks like performing brain surgeryB. interact with human beings verballyC. have a little common senseD. respond independently to a changing world4. Besides reducing human labor, robots can also _____.A. make a few decisions for themselvesB. deal with some errors with human interventionC. improve factory environmentsD. cultivate human creativity.5. The author uses the example of a monkey to argue that robots are _____.A. expected to copy human brain in internal structureB. able to perceive abnormalities immediatelyC. far less able than human brain in focusing on relevant informationD. best used in a controlled environmentUnit 3 Under the SeaAAustralia's Great Barrier Reef will lose most of its coral cover by 2050and, at worst, the world's largest coral system could collapse by 2100 becauseof global warming, a study released recently said. The study by Queensland University's Center for Marine Studies, commissioned by the Worldwide Fund for Nature, said that the destruction ofcoral on the Great Barrier Reef was inevitable due to global warming, regardless of what actions were taken now. "Under the worst-case scenario, coral populations will collapse by 2100 and the re-establishment of coralreefs will be highly unlikely over the following 200-500 years," said thereport entitled "Implications of Climate Change for Australia's Great BarrierReef."The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest living reef formationstretching 2,000 km north to south along Australia's northeast coast. "Only ifglobal average temperature change is kept to below two degrees Celsius canthe Reef have any chance of recovering from the predicted damage," thereport said. Coral has a narrow comfort zone and is highly stressed by atemperature rise of less than one degree Celsius. Water temperature rises ofless than one degree coincided with the world's worst recorded coralbleaching episode in 1988. With bleaching, the warmer water forces out thealgae that give coral its color and, if all are lost, the coral dies and the reefwill crumble. In 1988, 16 percent of the world's coral died, with 46 percent ofthe Indian Ocean coral destroyed.Scientists project water temperatures to rise this century by betweentwo and six degrees Celsius. "There is little to no evidence that corals canadapt fast enough to match even the lower projected temperature rise," saidthe report. Over-fishing and pollution from coastal farms were alsocontributing to the destruction of coral on the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef supports huge fishing and tourism industries.Even under favorable conditions tourists would only be able to experiencereal corals in reef "theme parks".1. Which of the following statement is true?A. If we try to take immediate measures, maybe we can rescue Australia’sGreat Barrier Reef.B. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef will lose in less than 100 years because ofglobal warning.C. If global average temperature is kept to below two degrees Celsius canthe Reef have any chance of recovering from the predicted damage.D. If a temperature rises in less than one degree Celsius, coral will not beinfluenced.2. From the passage, we can imply that__________A. you can find corals in many areas of the world seas or oceans.B. corals are trying to agree with the global warming.C. there would be no coral without algae.D. coral is white but when it dies it is red.3. What is the direct cause of co ral’s death according to the passage?A. The sun’s direct shiningB. Human beings’ harmful activitiesC. Algae disappears quickly.D. The rising of the surface of oceans.4. What does the underlined word mean in the second paragraph?A. imagined situation of future eventsB. planned result in the coming days.C. expected result from human beingD. predicted influence on current facts.5. Which of the following is less responsible for the destruction of coral on the Great Barrier Reef?A. fishingB. waste water from coastal farmsC. temperature rise over 2 degreesD. poisonous waste from factoriesBA few years ago, I was on a bicycle trip when I got off my bike for a rest. I sat down on the grass. A few seconds later, I was covered in ants. They were swarming all over me so I got up and brushed them off. It was a strange experience but I soon forgot about it.A couple of years later, I was living in Jordan. I had just moved into a modern flat and was unpacking plates when I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I looked over at the kitchen drawer and there was a cockroach crawling out of it. I screamed. Then I grabbed a can of insecticide and sprayed it on the cockroach. He ran under the nearby bathroom door. It took me three days before I found the courage to open the bathroom door to see if he was still alive. He wasn’t.Why did I react so violently to one lone insect when a closer encounter with hundreds of ants hardly affected me? The answer is easy: because cockroaches ar e creepy crawlies and ants aren’t. Creepy crawlies are those little bugs which provoke feelings such as uneasiness, anxiety or dislike –they make your skin crawl.Did you know that some people feel such a fear of bugs that it becomes a phobia? Psychologists have offered many explanations. Some say we associate them with dirt and disease. Or that these are life forms that are so alien to us, that we find them repulsive(令人厌恶的) for their dissimilarity.Insects, however, don’t follow our rules – they just do what they want and invade our space. Unfortunately, although insects and bugs have been a successful animal species up to now, many of them, like many other species nowadays, are under threat of extinction. Entomologists(昆虫学家) warn that this could upset entire ecosystems and lead to all kinds of disastrous consequences. So my plea to you is: the next time you feel the urge to stamp on, splatter or spray a creepy crawly, give a thought to the planet and stop.1. Why did the author mention the ants in the beginning?A. Because the experience with the ants presents a sharp contrast to that with the cockroach later.B. Because the author wants to show her preference to the ants and her dislike for the cockroach.C. Because both ants and cockroaches are creepy crawlies that the authordislikes.D. Because meeting the ants is an unusual experience that the author canhardly forget.2.What does “insecticide” in the second paragraph probably mean?A. a kind of fruit juiceB. a kitchen knifeC. liquid for killing insectsD. cleanser for the bathroom3. How does the author feel about the bugs like cockroaches?A. The author doesn’t mind the contact with those harmless smallcreatures.B. They make the author feel so awful that they should be killed.C. They invade our space and become a threat to humans.D. They still deserve a place for keeping the balance of the nature.4. Which of the following is NOT the reason why the cockroach makes theauthor’s skin crawl?A. It looks so strange and different that the author c an’t accept itsappearance.B. It can make the author feel sick and cause a strong dislike.C. The author may relate it to something dirty or disease at the sight of it.D. It reminds the author of the experience of meeting hundreds of ants.5. Which of the following statements about bugs is NOT true according to thepassage?A. Some people may be frightened so much by bugs that it leads to apsychological barrier in some degree.B. People can enjoy a cleaner living environment if more bugs likecockroaches are killed.C. Many bugs are in danger of extinction so they should be placed underhuman’s protection.D. Some bugs are extremely unpleasant that people have a strong wish todestroy them.Unit 4 SharingAOnce upon a time, there were two sheep. One was a small sheep, so small. It has a soft voice—baa! C.’s Anacostia River with her elder sister and a friend.Wearing gloves to protect their hands, they filled garbage bags withwvwerything from fishing line and dirty plastic bottles to old gorcery bags. The girls and about 150 others were volunteering in the International CoastalCleanup, an annual event that raises awareness of the importance of keepingthe world’s waterways and oceans clean. The cleanup was sponsored by an organization called the OceanConservancy that works to protect ocean animals and their homes.Unfortunately, a lot of trash never makes it into a trash can. It blows in thewind, and travels down streams and rivers to the sea. Trash isn’t just ugly – itcan be dangerous for creatures that live in the water. Every year, plastic trash like old fishing gear, shopping bags, and food wrappers kills one million sea birds and 100,000 sea mammals and sea turtles. Sometimes these animls get tangled(绞在一起) up in garbage and die. Sometimes they eat trash that chokes or poisons them. Sea turtles, for example, mistake plastic bags for the jellyfish they love to eat.At the Anacostia River, Cammy helped the volunteers pick up 2,380 pounds of trash in just a few hours along three miles of shoreline. “When you hear about a coastal cleanup all you think is that you have to pick up trash,” says Cammy, “But then you get there and find out it is actually fun! I like meeting all the other people and helping out the environment.” This one – day event tells us something to keep in mind the other 364 days of the year: that we are all connected to the ocean, and that you can help keep the ocean clean by putting trash in the right place. In the past 21 years, volunteers with the International Coastal Cleanup have cleared millions of pounds of litter from 211,460 miles of coastline worldwide. That distance is the equivalent(等同物) of going around the Earth eight times! In 2006, 358,617 volunteers cleaned 34,560 miles of shoreline, collecting 7 million tons of trash! I was told it would mean a great deal to him,so I agreed.During the nine-mile drive to his home,I found out something aboutMatthew. He had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩症).When he was born, thedoctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were toldhe would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask,“Why me?”He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously,he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we had finished talking,I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said,“You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal,I will show it to you. ”Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. Unit 3Section ⅡⅠ.阅读理解AIt's easy to see how the sawfish got its name. These frightful creatures can grow to be more than 6 metres long.Their bodies are flat and winged, like underwater airplanes. And their noses are shaped like chainsaws(链锯).Sawfish are food hunters of the sea. When a sawfish is hungry, it waves its sharp-toothed big nose through a group of fish. Then,it lifts its nose and uses its mouth to draw the injured victims.Over the past 200 years, however, human actions have seriously endangered sawfish.Threats include fishing nets that trap the huge animals, often by mistake. Some people collect sawfish noses as prizes:One nose recently sold for nearly $ 1,600 online. In some Asian cultures, the toothy noses are used in ceremonies to drive evils (邪恶) and diseases away. And sawfish are also delicious.A growing demand in Asia for the animal's fins(鳍) for a pricey soup has contributed to the fish's pared with other fish, sawfish give birth late in life and at slow rates, which makes it hard for them to recover from overfishing.New efforts now aim to restore sawfish population.Beginning next month, an international agreement will provide protection for all seven of the world's sawfish species.Scientists are hoping that it's not too late to save the sawfish.“Until 1998, this fish had never been formally studied in the US,” says Tonya Wiley of the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL.“We didn't know such basic things as where they live, what habitat they use, how often they breed, how many young they have—even what age sawfish are when they begin breeding.”Through studies, scientists have become aware of how much the fish's numbers have decreased.Today, there may be 90 percent fewer sawfish than there used to be.Wiley estimates that only 3,000 to 6,000 sawfish remain in US waters.1.What's the most special feature of a sawfish?__C__A.It's frightful with a 6-metre-long body.B.Its body is flat and has many wings on it.C.Its teeth root on its nose.D.Its nose grows under its mouth.解析:细节理解题。

2018年英语人教选修7练习:unit 4 section 1 Warming Up Reading—Pre-reading含解析
活页作业(十)Ⅰ. 阅读理解It’s easy to see how to help some people, but what about those whose needs are not so obvious? This story may have happened not long ago-but it was a lesson which has stayed with me and helped me ever since. It was Thanksgiving and I was volunteering with my parents at a shelter for the needy(贫穷的).We stood behind the counter serving hot food to whoever came in. Most of our diners looked like they had been having hard times, their clothes were worn out and dirty. In short, they looked needy! Then,a man came in,who looked anything but needy. He was well dressed,he wore an expensive suit. I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw(下巴)dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food. The closer he came to my service station the more I muttered(嘟囔).What was this man doing?Surely he wasn’t going to take food, which was meant for those who were really in need! Then my mother quietly took me to one side. She said,“You have assumed that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical hunger, inadequate shelter or clothing, etc. And this gentleman doesn’t seem to have any of those problems. But what if his needs are emotional? What if he needs comfort, friends,or just to be amongst other human beings?”Her words hit me like a ton of bricks!I felt like I should apologize to the man-but I didn’t.About a week later the shelter received a large donation from an anonymous source. I can’t help but wonder if it came from that man. Now,whenever I meet someone I remember my mother’s lesson and try to send kindness and blessings their way, regardless of how they look.Needs aren’t always visible. But kindness always makes a difference.语篇解读:本文讲述了在避难所一次志愿者活动中,母亲的一番话让作者明白了一个道理:别以貌取人。

1940s.This is the first time that a state has reintroduced an animal like this. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife department will lead the effort to establish a sustainable population of gray wolves in the western part of the state, beginning in or .The Southern Rocky Mountains, where there used to be a lot of them, contain millions of acres of suitable habitat that could support several hundred wolves or more. However, some say it’s unwise to leave the question to voters.“State biologists have previously declined to introduce wolves. There’s a reason why it’s never been done before,” saysShawn Martini, spokesperson for Coloradans for Protecting Wildlife, noting that most supporters are from urban areas and they don’t have to live alongside the animal, unlike people living in the countryside.Farmers and hunters don’t favor theinitiative, either.Farmers worry wolves will kill their cattle while hunters worry they will lose elk (驼鹿) to the predators. On the other hand, according to Jonathan Proctor,a conservationist with the Defenders of Wildlife, reintroducing wolves will restore Colorado’s natural balance. They help thin out sick animals, maintaining healthy populations of deer and elk.The remains of wolf kills also provide food for “eaters of the dead”,including wolverines, eagles, and bears. He also emphasizes the experience of living with wolves in other places, like the Northern Rockies, has shown that wolves are not the threat people sometimes make them out to be.Biologists of the reintroduction program promise to make it a priority to work with people living alongside wolves, providing training and resources to keep thewolves out of the farms in the first place. And a program will be funded to pay farmers for their lost cattle.8.What can we learn about the Southern Rocky Mountains from the text?A.They are heavily populated.B.They were inhabited by wolves.C.They are in the east of Colorado.D.They are home to small animals.9.What’s Shawn Martini’s opinion roots are engineering wonders that contain lessons for modern architects. The town of Cherrapunji in the Khasi Hills is credited with the world record for annual rainfall of over 75 feet! And in this rainy and wet climate, the rubber fig tree grows with abandon. The tree has a secondary root system that grows up above the ground floor and lets the tree easily grow on top of big stones and even out in the middle of streams.Long ago,the Khasis,a tribe in Meghalaya region, realized they could make use of these roots to their own advantage.By controlling and directing the secondary roots, theyhave created strong living bridges with which to cross streams and rivers by themselves. To make a tree grow in a certain direction, the tribe’s people use the trunk of a betel nut tree, whose middle is got rid of,as a guidance system. The thin, tender roots of the rubber tree are placed so they grow in the direction of the tree trunk rather than fanning out.Eventually, the roots reach the other side of the river and grow into the soil. This process can take well over a decade before the bridge is fully functional and then over time the bridge grows and strengthens.Rocks are placed along the bridge’s sides to improve the footpaths. Some of these bridges are over 100 feet long and can even support the weight of fifty or more people at a time. These bridges are used daily by the people of the villages around Cherrapunji and a few are thought to be more than 500 years old. There is even a double-decker bridge, known as the “Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge”,which features two bridges grown right on mother, sister and I were spending the summer with my father,an army officer, who was stationed there. There wasn’t much to do for a young teen in the army cantonment,so I spent most of my days at the library, which housed a various—if modest—collection of books.I casually picked upBond’s DelhiIsNotFar on one such day and was immediately drawn into his gentle,unassuming,non-judgmental world.Since that day,I’ve searc hed for and read quickly with great enthusiasm every one of Ruskin Bond’s works.I think my affinity came from the fact that I identified on some level with him.Like me,he was shy and dreamy and enjoyed the company of the written word above that of people.A particularly painful theme that runs through Ruskin Bond’s work is his relationship with his father. The two were eore so perhaps because they were each other’s sole emotional support system.Bond’s parents divorced when he was little, and so it was just him and his father, and the latter comes across as a sensitive, gentle man who adored his son.Bond’s father died suddenly of malaria at 46,when Bond was just 10—a cruel blow for the young boy. It’s remarkable how Bond writes about his father’s untimely death w ith a quiet dignity:It is deeply touching but never maudlin.Moved as I was by Bond’s memories of his father, little did I know that I would soon be experiencing his pain first-hand.When I was 21,my father too suddenly passed away after a brief illness.Look ing back at the time immediately after my father’s passing, all I remember is a feeling of utter disbelief,of thinking.I sought refuge in my beloved books, and no other author gave me as much assistance and relief as did my beloved Ruskin Bond.4.Why did the author go to the library?A.To read Bond’s novel.B.To review his lessons.C.To broaden his fish (海葵鱼) for eo,Marlin swims over 1,000 miles from the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney to rescue his son Nemo, who has been caught by divers. In reality, anemone fish rarely move so far away from their home.Despite their smaller size, the males help the females defend the nest, but only the male anemone fish take care of it.They use their fins as fans to provide a constant flow of oxygen and keep the surroundings clean. They also put a lot of effort in building the nest. The eggs take about five days to hatch.During this important period, dads fan them to provide oove the rubbish. They also pick up the eggs in their mouths and move them around to remove any bacteria. One of the biggest threats comes from female sticklebacks (刺鱼),who form organized groups and attack the nests to eat all the eggs.Males defend the newborn fish and bring back the ones who move too far from the nest.Once the fish grow up,they become a little bit more independent and start to swim away. The dad swims after them, picks them up in his mouth, and spits them back into his nest.Eventually,he gets to the point where he can’t kee p track of them and that’s when they separate.Doting (溺爱的) fathers are not restricted to the world of fish.In some poison frog species, the dads also warn the moms when the young ones are hungry and need to be fed. It’s generally believed that moms are the caregivers. In fish just as much fromstudents as students learn from teachers. Here are a few of the things I have learned in my job.Roger was physically and mentally delayed.About once a month,we would have a dance in our classroom.Roger was awkward and ashamed when it came to asking a girl to dance with him.But once,I noticed that Roger was slow dancing with Leah, one of the most popular girls in the class. He had the biggest smile on his face. The ney classroom to work with his support teacher,I praised Leah for inviting Roger to dance. That simple act of including him in a slow dance was such a great move.At our next dance,Roger asked Leah and every other girl in the class to dance. No one turned him down.Leah taught me the kindness of a simple act and its great effect. It was Serena who showed us what bravery was about.Serena was our play’s narrator(旁白员).She was scared she would forget her lines.“If you do,” I advised,“pause, stare at the audience and take time to remember. The audience will think it’s part of the play.” Halfway through the opening night,Ser ena forgot her lines. She stared at the 300 people gathered in the gym. After whatseemed like forever,Serena remembered. After the performance, she burst into tears backstage, thinking she had let everybody down. When our principal came to congratulate our cast, she turned to Serena and said her pause worked so well.Little did she more energy than walking down a sidewalk—because the weight of your body pushes into the sand.It turns out that the same thing is true for vehicles driving on roads.“The weight o f the vehicles creates a very shallow indentation(凹痕) in the pavement—like it’s continuously driving up a very shallow hill,” said Jeremy Gregory,a scientist at MIT.He modeled with his teammates how much energy could be saved and how much greenhouse gases could be avoided by simply hardening the nation’s roads and highways. And they found that hardening 10 percent of the nation’s roads every year could prevent the emission(排放) equal to 440 megatons of carbon dioxide over the neount is equal to how much CO2you’d spare the planet by keeping a billion barrels of oil in the ground or by growing 7 billion trees for a decade. It reduces 0.5% of projected transportation emissions over that time period. As for how to harden roads,Gregory says you could combine small amounts of certain fibre with high technology into paving materials.Or you could pave the roads with specially-made concrete, which is harder than ordinary construction materials. This system could also be a way to shave carbon emissions without some of th e usual barriers.“Usually, when it comes toreducing emissions in the transportation sector, you’re talking about changing policies related to vehicles and also driver behavior, which involves(牵涉) millions and millions of people—as opposed to changing the way we design and preserve our pavements. That’s just on the order of thousands of people who are working in transportation agencies.” And when it comes to improving our streets and highways, those agencies are where you might say the rubber meets the road.8.How does the author develop paragraph 3?A.By giving food goes right into the garbage can.Eight to ten percent of global greenhouse gas emissions(排放物) are related to food waste, according to a report by t he UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.“When you throw away anegg or a sandwich,” says Yvette Cabrera, food waste director at the Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC),“you’re also throwing away all the resources that went into producing those things.”They include not only all the water, land, and fertilizer(肥料) that went into producing that food, but also the massive amounts of fossil fuels used to power the farms, transport the food, and create the packaging. Then there’s the issue of what happens to food after it’s thrown out.More food ends up in ndfills than any other type of trash.Food rotting in landfills produces methane(甲烷),a greenhouse gas that’s roughly 25 times more powerful at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, which is produced by burning fossil fuels.Food waste is a difficult problem to solve, though,in part because it happens for different reasons depending on the country. In developing nations,40 percent of food is lost before it ever reaches people’s homes, because many of those countries lack the technology and tools to preserve food. It’s another story in wealthier countries, where most of the food is wasted in people’s kitchens.Americans, for example, throw out a quarter of their groceries each year,on average, according to the NRDC.That’s like going to the grocery store, leaving with four bags of groceries, and then throwing one of them into the garbage before you get home.12.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.The problem of food waste.B.The awareness of food saving.C.The necessity of food diversity.D.The ways of food preservation.13.What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.The leftovers in the fridge.B.The packaging materials of products.C.The thrown eggs or sandwiches.D.The resources to produce food.14.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4?A.Provide a persuasive eore background information.C.Discuss a more serious consequence.D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.15.In what stage does food waste mainly happen in developed countries?A.Storage.B.Transportation.C.Processing.D.Consumption.Ⅱ.七选五(浙江金丽衢十二校第一次联考)We may befriend more people on social media, but we have fewer real friends—the kind who would help us out as your realfriends, your go-to people if you need something,” Brashears said.Brashears asked people online from a database calledTime-sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences to list the names of people with whom they had discussed “important matters” over the previous six months.48 percent of participants listed one close friend when asked,28 percent listed two and 19 percent listed more.3 He reported the results in the journal SocialNetworks.4 Brashears said his survey can’t tell us conclusively(确定地),but his guess is that while we meet just as many people as we used to,we sort them from the University of Pennsylvania wrote a report.Hampton wrote in his blog post,“Internet,or social media users h ave more close relationships than other people. They get more overall social support species.Human impacts—specifically fishing nets and ship strikes—remain the biggest threats to the survival of this species in eastern Canada and the United States.North Atlantic right whales have been in decline since when the species was at an estimated 481 whales. In the past decade, the species has decreased by 30%.Recent research shows these threats are affecting their overall health with less energy to devote to growth and reproduction(繁殖) and body lengths reducing over the past four decades.Researchers estimate there are fewer than 100 breeding(繁育的) females alive and more than 86% of identified whales had been entangled(被网困住) at least once in their lifetime. There is still hope:in ,scientists tracked 18 mother-kid pairs,a number that is cause for optimism—though still well below the annual average of 23 pairs from the previous decade.Industry representatives, government agencies, and organizations, including WWF,gathered in October at the annual North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium meeting to discuss and arrange right whale conservation efforts in the US and Canada.“It’s going to be challenging, but everyone involved in right whale conservation believes we can create an environment where right whales can bounce back,” said Chris Johnson, the global leader of WWF’s Protecting Whales and Dolphinsinitiative.“However,it’s going to take significant investment and the greatest urgency and commitment to create conditions where we prevent entanglements and collisions with ships in the whales’ critical habitats.”8.Which of the following best describes the right whale population?A.Well conserved.B.Slowly decreasing.C.Rapidly growing.D.Critically endangered.9.What does Chris Johnson say about the right whale conservation?A.It needs the government to ban fishing in certain areas.B.It will not work without funds from the government.C.It can help increase the number of right whales.D.It is not practical and will fail eventually.10.What can we learn about female right whales?A.Most of them have never been entangled.B.Mother right whales may have slightly decreased.C.There are more female right whales than male right whales.D.Their population has decreased by 30% in the past decade.11.What can be inferred about the right whale species?A.Their size has been decreasing due to climate change.B.They may have found a home in other parts of the ocean.C.They were hunted by people for their meat in the past.D.They are well on the way to dying out if not well protected.D(江苏苏锡常镇四市教学情况调研一)StarWars fans would be familiar with the good relationship between humans and androids(人形机器人) in the movies. In the movie Solo:AStarWarsStory,Lando Calrissian risked his life to rescue his co-pilot,a female droid L3-37.In real life,a humanoidrobot,Sophia, has recently been granted(准予) citizenship in Saudi Arabia.Increasingly, people are ready to see robots as resembling humans.Given this phenomenon,I believe it is necessary to consider giving robots certain rights humans enjoy.Experts have argued that since robots have now acquired human-like qualities,it is appropriate to consider if they should have rights just as humans.Sophia has a humanlike face and utilizes artificial intelligence to respond to speech and eotions. For such a lifelike being that is potentially capable of eotions, does it not deserve the right to be loved and respected?Robots should also be given legal and moral protection as harming a robot may be similar to harming humans.Since people tend to form attachments to social robots,it becomes possible for companies to control the hardware and software to eotionalattachment. There is a danger that data that is stored in the robot could be uploaded to the cloud. There would then possibly be situations in which the government or the private sector retrieves(检索数据) the information stored in a robotic toy or social robot. With these uncertainties,it is clear why robots should be protected, just as humans. An even more irresistible reason to grant human rights to the robots is the protection of societal values. We should stop a young child from kicking or tearing a toy robot apart because it resembles a real life.Giving robots certain rights will ensure that societal standards are set.Still, many have roundly argued that no matter how sophisticated(老练的) they may be,robots are still machines. It is therefore quite ridiculous to treat them as living beings and grant them rights. However, with the advancement in technology,it is a matter of time before robots are fully anthropomorphized(给……赋予人性),and we would have to consider granting them rights. In conclusion, deciding whether robots deserve human rights is by no means an easy task, but now is the time to start the conversation on this and seriously consider the possibility. 12.Why does the author mention the two examples in the first paragraph?A.To remind readers of the importance of robots.B.To discuss the necessity of rescuing robots.C.To set readers thinking about an issue about robots.D.To describe the relationship between humans and robots.13.What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?A.Robots should be legally and morally protected.B.There is possible information risk.C.Humans are doing harm to robots.D.Robots should be given more emotional attachment.14.What’s the author’s attitude towards granting robots human rights?A.Doubtful.B.Favorable.C.Negative.D.Uncaring.15.What’s the structure of the passage?(①=Para.1 ②=Para.2 ③=Para.3 ④=Para.4 ⑤=Para.5 Are you used to putting yourself down? If so, you' re not alone. As a teen, you're going through many changes in your body. And as your body changes, so does your image of yourself.Lots of people have trouble adjusting, and this can affect their self-esteem (自尊).If you have a positive body image, you probably like and accept yourself the way you are. This healthy attitude allows you to explore other aspects of growing up, such as developing good friendships, growing more independent from your parents, and challenging yourself physically and mentally.Developing these parts of yourself can help boost (提升)yourself-esteem.A positive attitude and a healthy lifestyle (such as exercising and eating right)are a great combination for building good self-esteem.Some people think they need to change how they look or act to feel good about themselves. But actually all you need to do is change the way you see your body and how you think about yourself. The first thing to do is recognize that your body is your own, no matter what shape, size or color it comes in.If you are very worried about your weight or size, check with your doctor to verify (核实)that things are OK.But it is no one's business but your own what your body is like—ultimately, you have to be happy with yourself.Next, identify which aspects of your appearance you can realistically change and which you can't.Everyone has things about themselves that they can't change and need to accept—like their height, for example, or their shoe size. When you hear negative comments coming from within yourself, tell yourself to stop.Try building your self-esteem by giving yourself three good things every day.By focusing on the good things you do and the positive aspects of your life, you can change how you feel about yourself. The most important thing is to get help if you feel like your body image and self-esteem are affecting your life.1.If we have a positive body image, we will_____.A.concentrate on our body image onlyB.not develop strong self-esteemC.like and accept ourselves as we areD.be less independent of our parents2.______ can NOT help to boost your self-esteem.A.Growing independent from your parentsB.Accepting your own body as it actually isC.Having a positive attitude and a healthy lifestyleD.Improving your body image as much as you can3.To improve our body image, we have to _____.A.think about ourselvesB.be happy with ourselvesC.change the shape, size or color of one's bodyD.check with our doctor to verify that our body is OK4.Which is probably the best title of the passage?A.Importance of Body ImageB.Effects on a Person's Self-esteemC.Tips for Improving Body ImageD.Self-esteem and Body Image2.完型填空(30分)One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her fatheron what he had always been famous for。
Larry first began diving when he was his daughter’s age。
Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions.Since then, he had never looked back。
Larry started out by rentingdiving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore。
He had hated them. They were either too big or too small。
Then, there was the instructor. Hegave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father。
He had made an exception。
Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide。
