Lesson One Science and the ScientistPart One1. Science is an effort to discover and increase human understanding of how the physical world works.2. Through controlled methods, scientists use observable physical evidence of natural phenomena to collect data, and analyze this information to explain what and how things work.3. These activities have led to discoveries that have enabled humans to develop technologies we now take for granted, such as the internet, smartphones, and the ability to transplant human organs.4. Science has also enabled us to explore the oceans, outer space, and the microscopic world, and to understand the composition and history of our planet.Part Two1. While scientists do not always come up with correct explanations, nor do they have all the answers to the mysteries of the universe, science is the best tool we have for understanding the physical world.2. It is important to appreciate that science is an ongoing process, constantly refining and redefining what we know about the world around us.3. One of the fundamental principles of scientific inquiry is that the results of an experiment must be repeatable by other researchers.4. Scientists also work collaboratively across borders and disciplines, building knowledge and understanding collectively.Part Three1. To be successful in science, curiosity and creativity are essential qualities, as is an ability to think critically and objectively.2. Scientific discovery often requires persistence and the willingness to learn from failure.3. In addition to these qualities, a scientist should also be open-minded and receptive to new ideas and experiences.4. Furthermore, science is not a solitary pursuit, and the ability to communicate one's findings and collaborate with others is vital. Part Four1. Science has the power to change the world and has helped to solve many of the problems facing humanity today.2. Yet, science can also be misused or misunderstood, and there isa need for society as a whole to understand and support scientific research and development.3. Scientific literacy, or an understanding of the basic principles of science and its methods, is essential for informed decision-making in an increasingly technological world.4. Ultimately, science is a process of discovery and exploration, seeking to understand the world around us and the laws that govern it.

But last weekend another teacher, Jenny, and 1 did visit a village which is the home of one of the boys, Tombe.

It was my first visit to a remote village.

We walked for two and a half hours to get there - first up a mountain to a ridge from where we had fantastic views and then down a steep path to the valley below.

When we arrived at the village, Tombe's mother, Kiak, who had been pulling weeds in her garden, started crying "ieee ieee".

We shook hands with all the villagers.

Everyone seemed to be a relative of Tombe's.

Tombe's father, Mukap, led us to his house, a low bamboo hut with grass sticking out of the roof - this shows it is a man's house.

The huts were round, not rectangular like the school buildings.

There were no windows and the doorway was just big enough to get through.

The hut was dark inside so it took time for our eyes to adjust.

Fresh grass had been laid on the floor and there was a newly made platform for Jenny and me to sleep on.

Usually Kiak would sleep in her own hut, but that night she was going to share the platform with us.

Mukap and Tombe were to sleep on small beds in another part of the hut.

There was a fireplace in the centre of the hut near the doorway.

The only possessions I could see were one broom, a few tin plates and cups and a couple of jars.

Outside Mukap was building a fire.

Once the fire was going, he laid stones on it.

When hot, he placed them in an empty oil drum with kau kau (sweet potato), corn and greens. He then covered the vegetables with banana leaves and left them to steam.

I sniffed the food; it smelled delicious.

We ate inside the hut sitting round the fire.

I loved listening to the family softly talking to each other in their language, even though I could not participate the conversation.
