Impact Modification
• Objectives To reduce brittle behaviour of engineering polymers such as Polyesters, PA. PET and PBT have good mechanical and thermal properties (flexural modulus etc.) but their main defects are the poor impact resistance at low temperatures (30°C, -40°C) and sensitivity to notch • Solution To disperse homogeneously in small particles an elastomeric polymer (low Tg) in the semi-cristalline Polyester matrix in order to reduce the brittle behavior by a mechanism which absorbs energy and avoids crack propagation
COMPOUNDING CONDITIONS (for PBT)
PBT (as received) Lotryl and/or Lotader Glass Fibers by side Feeder Vacuum
W&P ZSK 40 (L/D=40) Melt temperature : 250-265°C Throughput : 40-80 kg/hr Screw speed : 150-300 rpm Dried before injection : (80°C over night / vaccum)

The elastomeric polymer is not always miscible and generally not compatible with the polyester matrix. It is necessary to compatibilize using an amphiphilic polymer that acts like a soap for an oil/water mixture
