Link Between Memory and SugarSugar On The BrainIt’s long been understood that there is a connection between memory problems and diabetes, a disorder characterized by excessively high blood sugar. Sugar provides the body with fuel for various processes, including memory processing. In fact, glucose carried in the blood stream supplies the brain with 90 percent of the energy it requires to function properly.In order to fuel those processes glucose has to get from the blood to the tissues, where it can be broken down and put to work. High blood sugar levels, such as in diabetes, are an indicator that a body is experiencing difficulty moving sugar from the blood to the tissues.However, some non-diabetics have a less severe form of high blood sugar, a condition called impaired glucose tolerance. And it is this condition that seems to be the cause of memory problems in a significant number of non-diabetic elderly people who experience memory difficulties.Sweet NothingsSubjects were given glucose intravenously, and then researchers measured how quickly glucose moved from the blood to the tissues. Next the subjects were tested for overall cognitive functioning and the ability to recall short paragraphs. The results? Subjects who scored lowest on memory recall tests also showed impaired glucose tolerance.In addition, brain scans demonstrated that these same subjects each had a significantly smaller hippocampus, a brain area important to learning and memory. The researchers hypothesize that impaired glucose tolerance may over time cause damage and atrophy to the hippocampus.What can a body do to prevent this? Even her name tells you that she likes science: a good scientist should want to find out answers and ask many questions --- in other words they should be curious. This woman was certainly curious. Together with her husband, she tried to learn the secrets of radioactivity. The couple were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903. Eight years later, she received a second Nobel Prize, this time for chemistry.2 It is said that this English gentleman was sitting in his garden one day when suddenly he was hit by a falling apple. The story is probably not true, but this man did mention that he got one of his best-known ideas while watching apples fall from a tree. His name makes you think that he was not too interested in old things. He discovered the force of gravity, and he drew up a system of how objects move. His laws for motion are still used in physics today, at least in schools and universities.3 Food is what sets this great mind on fire. Rice, to be exact. This great mind has spent most of his life looking for ways to help farmers grow more rice so that all of us will have enough food to eat. He is known as the father of modem rice, but because of his long friendship with all the farmers in China, he would rather be known as “the farmer”.Listening Texts to Unit One (Workbook)Part 1Scientists often look at nature in order to find new ideas. In ancient times, Chinese scientists studied how spiders make silk. Modem scientists are interested in the spider, too. A spider can make silk that is much stronger than most man-made materials. A spider‟s silk doesn‟t break easily. Instead of breaking, it gets longer. Best of all, the spider produces the silk without the use of dangerous or poisonous chemicals. If we could learn to use the technique, we might be able to use the strong silk to make things like seat belts and wires that hold up bridges.Part 2There are many other examples of how new technology has been developed by learning from nature. A group of German scientists wanted to find out why leaves and flowers are able to stay so clean. They decided to take a closer look at the white lotus, a flower that is known for its clean leaves. At first, the scientists believed that a very flat leaf would be better at staying clean. However, when they looked closely at the white lotus, the scientists saw that the leaf was in fact covered with tiny hairs and needles. The needles and hairs collect the dust that falls on the leaf so that a raindrop can easily wash it off. The German scientists used this technique to design a new kind of paint. The new paint could keep houses looking clean for years.Scientists also believe that the butterfly could teach us a way to keep our computers cool. A computer must be kept cool to function well. The fans we use today are not always good enough. The butterfly is cold-blooded and must change its body temperature all the time. Scientists have found that there are small parts on its wings that the butterfly uses to change its temperature. If scientists can learn how this is done, it may be possible to use the same method to keep computers from becoming too hot.。

Hi, Samantha, welcome toInterviewer: the show, and welcome to England!Samantha: Thanks!Interviewer: Where are you from?Samantha: I'm from Albany, in New York State.Interviewer: When did you arrive in the UK?Samantha: Two months ago, in September, at the beginning of the school term. Interviewer: How did you get to hear about the exchange?Samantha: I saw an advertisement in my school magazine back in the states. Interviewer: Where are you attending school now?Samantha: In Leeds, in Yorkshire.Interviewer: And how are you getting on?Samantha: I'm getting on just fine, now that I understand the local accent. Interviewer: So, it was difficult at first?Yes, because I didn't get what people were saying for a couple of days.Samantha: I think that was the biggest problem I had when I arrived.Interviewer: But then you got used to it?Yes — and now it seems quite normal. In fact, in some ways the accentSamantha: here, in the north of England, reminds me of American English. Interviewer: How do you mean?Well, like they say bath instead of bath, or Do you want to danceSamantha: instead of dance, like they do in other parts of Britain.Interviewer: What's been the most positive thing about the exchange so far?Definitely the people, especially the other students in my class.Samantha: They're really friendly.Interviewer: Is there anything else you like about living in Britain?Lots of things, like the music scene in Leeds, for instance. I like LeedsSamantha: because there's more going on here than back home in the states. Theschool has a creative music laboratory, which is really interesting.I've got a question to ask you, Samantha, about the future of English.Interviewer: Do you think in the future everyone will speak American English?No, why should they? Since English is spoken all over the world, ISamantha: guess it's only natural that there are lots of varieties.So do you think you'll go home speaking with a north of EnglandInterviewer: accent?Samantha: Oh no, I didn't mean that!Well now I'd like to turn to our other guest, another exchange student, that's eighteen-year-old Callum Nightingale. Callum, you recentlyInterviewer: returned from the US. How long were you there?Callum: Ten months altogether.Interviewer: And where were you?Callum: I was in a fertile agricultural region, in a fairly small town in Mississippi. Interviewer: That's quite a long way south, isn't it?Callum: Yes, it is.Interviewer: What was the most difficult problem you had?Callum: I reckon it was the climate; it was hot and humid for a lot of the time. Interviewer: How did you get on with American English?Well, I didn't really have any problems with the accent. It was easy to Callum: understand, they speak rather slowly. Interviewer: But did they understand you?That's a good point. I think they did. As I was the only British person in the school they made a fuss of me. The girls all said my accent wasCallum: cute.Interviewer: What was the best moment of your stay?Callum: I think it was the prom, that's the school dance at the end of the year.I want to ask you a couple of questions about American English. DidInterviewer: you find that a lot of words are different?Yes, especially at school — they have grades, we have years, then the names of subjects are a bit different, like "civics", which basicallymeans law and government. And some sports are different — football means American football, not soccer — I actually played in the soccer team. Then the American word for maths is math, without the "s" —that seems like a very small detail. But the first time I heard it, itsounded strange ... but you get used to it.
